Hope you have 2e bootloader and not 3e. Other wise flashing any of the optimized kernels will work as they have cwm in em (If you are using froyo that is)

Yeah I am on 2E thank you

Are you running 3e recovery? If so you need 2e or cwm

how can i do that
I have the same issue. What's the 3e or 2e recovery?
you need to flash a cwm update.zip file which then installs older 2e bootloader which allows unsigned zips. You can find the link to a cwm update.zip from darky's legendary steel rom. Just follow the instructions but don't bother installing the rom (I recommend you do as its quite good)
The solution that I found was installing CWM v3.0.0.0 by flashboot (CMD Windows) because my nexus s was getting a freeze on Google screen (after RECOVERY) during the process of rooting.

[Q] Can I use 3e Recovery Method to flash custom ROMS?

Hi guys,
I have a non-rooted Galaxy S running Froyo 2.2, Baseband version is I9000BOJP3, Build No is FROYO.BOJPB (note this is the official Froyo T-Mobile ROM)
I am able to use the '3 button recovery mode' however it is the 3e recovery mode rather better 2e version.
Can I still use the 3e recovery mode to flash a custom rom onto this phone, would I be able to go back & recover my phone in the event of something going wrong?
Thanks in advance
You need 2e to install unsigned zip files.

Well no idea about your ROM. So its on you . WARNING if something goes wrong I take no responsibility. READ IF ITS FOR YOU BEFORE YOU FLASH SOMETHING But you can flash a custom kernel.
I used Speedmod Kernel READ THE WARNINGS IN THE THREAD. To go back I backed up mine. If its only kernel you change should be easy to go back. But whole rom after you flash something custom not sure . Anyway this is how I did it.
1. Root is a must
2. Download SGS kernel flasher from Neldar
3. Backup your current kernel with the SGS kernel flasher (upload to email)
4. Optional Just in case backup your efs folder (SGS toolbox is nice for that) upload the back to your email
5. Flash the CWM version (with the SGS kernel flasher) you get on speedmod kernels thread.
6. Optional, now you can boot to the 2e recovery (Again SGS toolbox comes in handy with a shortcut and apply the goodies from speedmod or backup everything or flash what you wanted
the "upload to email" I added cuz there can always, even without this flashing go something wrong with your SD (internal or external) and is always good to have a backup. you can change email to PC etc
I completely agree with Pagot's instructions. SGS Kernel Flasher and SGS Toolbox give you all you need to swap kernels with confidence, then add CWM for Mods and you are now good to go.
I would suggest that if you don;t with to email the efs folder to yourself, upload it to Dropbox. I keep all vital backups for all of my devices there, so I can get to them at anytime, from any device.

[Q] 3e Recovery

I'm using 'Overcome' ROM and I restock it to Samsung Firmware 2.2
Before I moved to 'Overcome' I did a Full Backup with 'ROM Manager'
Now I want to restore it but I keep getting the Samsung 3e Recovery instead CWM
I installed 'Rom Manager' and tried to install the Recovery from there
but when I reboot it still shows the 3e Recovery...
Does anyone know how to switch that 3e Recovery?
Thank you and sorry for my bad English.
Flash the chainfire kernel. Be sure to flash the kernel for froyo roms, not gingerbread roms.
But I think you should follow their guide, and upgrade your tab to overcome, rather than restore.

[Q] How to download clockworkmod and install while offline?

Hello.
ROM manager is unable to download clokworkmod recovery. Maybe because I'm in a "sanctioned country" CUBA and I have a lot of internet restrictions from both Google and my ISP.
My question is: Can I manually download clokworkmod recovery and copy it on the SD card and have ROM manager install it?
If the answer is yes: How? and where do I find Clockworkmod for the captivate?
i897 stock 2.1.1 rooted and unlocked.
Thanks.

all rom manager does is put this zip file on your sdcard. its not needed.
just drop this on the root of your sdcard, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice. CWM will come up then

the one caveat to this ... make sure you have the 2e boot loader when you boot into recovery. The 2e bootloader is the stock bootloader that comes with froyo. 3e will require you to have the update packages signed, and therefore will need to downgrade to 2e before you can switch to CWM.

Wrong.
2e RECOVERY comes from firmware 2.1, which the OP stated he was on. Froyo comes with 3e recovery. Has nothing to do with bootloader, because the bootloaders are the same between eclair and Froyo.

GREAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Working, one more question. I noticed three things:
1 - If I reboot to recovery again it goes into stock recovery (2e). Then I hit reinstall packages only once and ClockWorkMod comes up.
2 - If I delete the update.zip from the sd card CWM will not work.
3 - ROM Manager still says that CWM is not installed therefore is not working OK.
Is all this ok? Should I select: "Install sdcard:update.zip" while in CWM? Should I do something else?

That sounds pretty normal to me. If you are getting into CWM then thats all that really matters. The deal with ROM manager is that it doesnt work very well with our phones. But if you are trying to flash a custom ROM you can still do it without ROM Manager. However, you need to read up about the rom you want to flash because it is a slightly risky process. Its as risky as using ROM Manager and almost Russian roulette if you dont read.
But do not delete the update.zip after you install it. I dont know if it messes with the boot process of recovery mod but I do know its better to have that backup file on your SD card already if you run into a problem later on.
Don't bother with ROM manager. Its close to useless with SGS phones. Make sure your 3 botton combo works and you should be golden. Also making a jig isn't a bad idea also, just incase you do screw up and you get in a softbrick where your keycombos decide to not work.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery Mode HELP!

Can anyone help link me or teach me how to set up my phone to get into Clockwork Mod Recovery mode? whenever i try to reboot into Clockwork, it just boots into 3e recovery. I have an AT&T Samsung Captivate with stock 2.3.5 Gingerbread rooted and i have already flashed the latest version of ClockworkMod Recovery (2.5.1.2)
I want to overclock my captivate but i cant unless i can get ClockworkMod Recovery to work
Try flashing a rom with CWM already baked into it.
And PLEASE DO NOT use ROM Manager. It doesn't work on the Captivate.

FFS... you are using rom manager.. it hasnt supported captivate since 2.1 eclair.
2.5 clockwork is nowhere near the latest. at version 5 now.
and when rom manager used to work, you boot into 3e recovery then select install update.zip TWICE. (every time)
THEN you will boot into CWM.
**but you arent on android 2.1 so it will error out. then you are going to create another thread for a question that has been answered a million times already.
why do you need clockwork to overclock your phone??? (you dont)
might want to learn what stickies are and go read them for a few days before you F%%% up your phone predominantly. read the new user guide while you are at it.

this is what i am trying to do. I just got into ClockworkMod Recovery somehow but now i cant get out. It keeps looping between the at&t screen and CWM
Any suggestions? or should i reflash the stock rom for 2.3
august 2010... do you think that works on gingerbread when it was released before froyo was released??
i told you to read before you **** up your phone. are we going to listen now?

flash this kernel .tar with odin
or in CWM (now) go to Mounts and Storage > Mount USB > (plug phone into PC)
copy over the .zip kernel from the thread, then unmount > back > flash zip from sdcard > choose corn kernel.zip
In odin, do i flash as PDA, Bootloader, etc?
im a bit new to this, so i dont no all these fancy pancy stuff

if you are flashing a kernel then it will go in PDA section but if you are flashing stock 2.3 fw then all the files will go to their respective places
Should I use this link for Captivate with 2.3.4?
Hi,
You told a guy who was trying to get clockwordmod recovery on his captivate, to use this:
[KERNEL][KK4][1/28/11] Corn Kernel v7.06 from Source (OC, BLN, Voodoo Sound, etc.)
Should I also take that advice? I want to put AOKP on the phone, but I have to get clockwork on there first and the normal way doesn't work because of the 3e recovery unsigned business. Thank you much for your expertise and for being a great help to everybody.
