I didnt know where to search for this answer. I had a nexus one and sold it and i wanted another so i just bought one on ebay. What are other advantages to rooting if i have no interest in custom ROMs. i searched and found bits and pieces of an answer to my question but what i am looking for is a consolidated concise answer from you knowledgeable forum members.
Thanks
P.S. if this question has already been answered, please direct me that way

I would consider pointless and a waste of the warranty. There aren't a lot of mods in the dev section that will work on a stock (non-custom rom), so you wouldn't really be gaining anything there.

Sorry man, just saw that I said would work, what I meant was wouldn't work. A lot of the mods are built from source code that isn't compatible with stock ROMs.
Themes, Trackball Notification colors, Trackball Wake, Updated Launcher... Those are a few I can think of, off the top of my head.
Oh oh, you can install "WaveSecure" as a System application. Thus making it more difficult to remove from the phone. (Can't just go visit the market to remove )
Edit:
Screenshots via ShootMe, N1 Torch (Hey... I did have to use this when my workplace hallways were lacking power... Otherwise I'd consider it a novelty)
Why do you not want a custom ROM? if you are worried about the UI, cyanogen mod is identical to the stock UI (minus a few colour changes), but adds a whole lot more functionality and memory. The only advantage i can see having a rooted phone with stock over cyanogen is that you will still recieve OTA updates.

... of which are usually leaked well beforehand and integrated into a ROM, before the official OTA goes out.
Personally, it was the CyanogenROM that made the risk of rooting worth it. There's plenty of great apps and utils out there that require root, but none (even cumulatively) worth risking $530 to get.
If you're not interested in the ROMs, then take the blue pill.
being able to push the track ball to turn the phone on was plenty reason for me ;o
The decision to root was a hard one for me also, but let me go down the reasons why I loved that I did it.
1) Auto-Rotating launcher. Landscape view is pretty friggin sweet. Plus all my iphone friends get so jelous when I want to show them something so i just flip my phone and my screen rotates 180 degrees. Coolest thing ever...
2) Colored trackball notifications. I don't know about you, but i like that i know what a notification is before i ever take the time to turn the screen on.
3) SetCPU. I made a profile so that when my screen is off, my processor runs slower, thus giving me more battery life.
4) N1 Torch. Turns the N1 into a great flash light.
5) Launcher with shortcuts. I didn't really have a problem with the dots, but having 4 shortcuts to apps there so that they are on every homescreen is very nice.
6) I now have a black notification bar at the top rather than a grey one. This makes the phone alot sexier...
7) Modifcations to HTC_IME. I love the transparent background. This only words if clicker.apk and htc_ime.apk are in the system/app/ folder which you can only modifiy with root access.
8) nandroid backup. very nice.
9) Wake screen on trackball push. Good little shortcut which makes things a little easier.
10) *most important reason* The overall speed of my phone is so much faster... On the stock rom is was plenty fast and i had no complaints, but now it is even more so. The bakedgoods rom is like putting a supercharger in your phone.
The decision to root was a hard one for me, but looking back, I have only 1 regret. Not doing it sooner

only reason 10 requires a custom rom.
WiFi TETHERING!!!!!!!
apps on the sd. I still ran out if memory installing the apps I use regularly. That is the main reason for me. Enabling all the phones memory was a big reason too. Plus who needs a warranty with insurance?
if you have no interest in custom ROMS, i think it would be a waste of warranty... unless you want to install any apps which require root access (like N1 Torch)... or the several modded/developed system apps that require rw access to the system partition which you can only get using insecure boot... so make ur choice... the N1 stock is great... the N1 cooked... wayyy better than the best!!!
Its in my sig now
I think its funny how people complained that the MT3g, cliq...yadda yadda didnt have enough speed..SO they put in a snapdragon...and people are still not happy. Voiding your warranty is certainly good enough to keep me from rooting my phone for a flashlight, or a trackball color change...Whoop dee doo. When we rooted the mytouch...etc, they had legit reasons. Mutli touch, speed, space saver, cool themes, and tether. They only thing that the nexus doesnt have now is tether. So In due time I will def go back to the rooting field, but not at the cost of voiding my warranty.
But then again the HTC warranty is a joke. I am not sending you my phone and waiting for you to fix a problem that shouldn't have been there in the first place, then wait for you to send it back. Screw that, I would rather pay my deductible and get a refurb.
Contradicting..
But everyone has their own opionon. Oh and just an FYI, from experience HTC can tell if its been rooted

Yes, HTC is smart and like any other company, would like to avoid warranty claims. So I believe they do check every phone to make sure it's not rooted.
I see you point, but I just don't quite agreed with it... but hey, that's my opinion vs. yours and no one's gonna win this battle ;-p).0 But quite frankly, I don't think I'd enjoy my N1 half as much if it was not rooted... I like the stuff Cyanogen ,Enomther, Paul & the other amazing devs have done... I like to fiddle around with the phone... try out new stuff... experiment... the same thing I would do with any linux box... even did it on the Motorola Linux phone I previously had...
So it all boils down to opinion... if you like to fiddle around, root it... if you like the mods, root it... else stick with stock...

I love to expiriment and root just not this early.
just purchased a sprint htc hero im wondering what are the advantages or disadvantages on changing the roms and can someone help me in chosing and installing a new rom
Themes. Tethering. Improve battery life and signal. Improve overall speed. New 2.1 features. And VARIETY! Just to name a few...
The advantages are many...it's fun to see what other people come up with, exciting to find new features, cool to check out many different awesome themes....
Disavantages....on occasion you have to wipe going from one rom to the next (but that can be fun too)
.....what ROM to choose, that is going to be up to you and what you like in a ROM....from all the ones you test out on your HERO!!!!
Do some reading and ROM searches my friend, you'll be surprised at all the good stuff you find
And all the info you'll need is at the top of the forum.
Here -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618874
And here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618867
No one can help you chose a rom, it's a personal choice and frankly there are so many to chose from you'll get at least 5 different answers from 10 people.
The advantages are you will get much better performance out of your device and unlock potential that the average person would never know exists. Sprint bogs the thing down with so much crap you would be AMAZED at how much better it will operate when it's all cleaned up Also you can do things like wifi tether (true) and enable the built in light saber (false)
The disadvantage is learning about this stuff and doing it for yourself is so fascinating and fun if you're not careful it will quickly take over every aspect of your life (true)
There are plenty of guides from getting started for total noobs to things like compiling kernel from source code. Check out the guides wiki at the top of the forum, it' one of the stickies. First thing you will do is "root" and backup your phone, then you're pretty much good to do whatever you want and as long as you don't flash a GSM rom on your CDMA hero anything you do after you make a nandroid backup is reversible.
Welcome to xda, have fun!
*edit- LOL, there's a few of us up late tonight I see!
I finally decided to use custom ROM because I got sick of waiting for Sprint to release 2.1 update. There is all sorts of software out now that just runs on 2.1, Google Navigate was the big one for me.
Since I upgraded, there has been other things, speed, the ability to install a virtually unlimited set of apps, live wallpapers, swype keyboard, these are the big things i Like. Edit: Oh and wifi tethering is huge!!
There are some problems right now, you cant have everything at once. and it will take some time playing around to get what works best for you.
One other thing to consider is that when Sprint rolls out the 2.1 update over the air, you may lose the ability to root your phone. You can root now, and when the update comes out, someone here will make a rom from it and that way you will guarantee the ability to have root and still have latest stock sprint/htc software.

Agreed, there are several methods to rooting but you cant go wrong doing it the old fashioned way. You get some great exposure to the inside of your phone and TTG wrote a very good guide. Just follow the steps.
Also in that guide he has a link to the 1.5.2 recovery image, thats a little outdated, you want RA's 1.6.2 found HERE, scroll about 2/3 down the page and choose one of the 4, doesn't matter which, the only difference in them is cosmetic.

I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?
Thanks..

The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

totally ignore the last part. Samsung is terrible also am I crazy or doesn't need to be in a different section?
I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

both of these statements are completely true.
the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...
I just ordered my Samsung Captivate and now I am just waiting...
Maybe I could pass the time learning about Android!?
Having only had a little expierience with my Friend's MotoBackflip running Doughnut and my current phone being Winmo 6.5, I wanted to know the best way to learn about Android before I recieve my phone.
What would be the best learning resource?
I have a feeling I am going to want to Root the phone which I don't completely know what that means but if it gets rid of the the Bloatware then I am just fine with it.
HTC has spoiled me so I have a feeling I am going to want to get rid of TouchWiz too but we'll see.
I have like a thousand questions but I am a pretty capable person so just point me in the right direction if you can!
as far as rooting i think you could take a look at the android dev forum , theres some info there about rooting and different roms available I believe

Hmm, I'm in a bit of a similar situation (though I've owned an iPhone in-between owning WinMo and then Android).
First off, the best way to learn is to see whether devs had ported Android to your WinMo phone or not. If they did, use that to learn. If not, try reading an Android guidebook (e.g. T-Mobile G1 for Dummies) or simply using an available Android emulator. There's one at: http://tmobile.modeaondemand.com/htc/g1/
Lastly, there's a bit of a difference between Android's root and WinMo's HardSPL. The only purpose of HardSPL is basically to change ROMs...because WinMo pretty much allows you to do anything else you want. Android's rooting, on the other hand, doesn't just allow you to install ROMs, but it allows you to use a variety of programs which requires your phone to be rooted (e.g. ROM Manager), install certain tweaks, and so on.
As an analogy, Android's root is probably closer to iOS' jailbreaking than it is to WinMo's HardSPL. As with the iPhone's jailbreaking, rooting allows you access to a larger variety of apps, tweaks to change how your phone performs, and so on.
If you have any other questions, then basically the right direction to point you in is the Android phone forums around here. Read the questions others asked, see the answers, and learn. That's how I did it.

Android is built on Linux. Linux does not handle resources the way Windows does. Basically, it closes programs when it is done on its own.

Your def in the right place. This is my first android phone and from what I understand the captivate is one of thee r easier phones to do anything with. I've flashed this thing a bunch of times already and there hasn't ben any custom roms released for it yet. Check out the stickies in the dev forum. Everything is there. And there s no way to get rid of touch whiz yet. Launcher pro is pretty awesome though. Its free on the market
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Is LauncherPro basically another UI?
When I goto root my device, which or what is going to be the best way?
Should I do the Onclick root program thing? or is there an even better way?
This is sounding like it is going to be just as much fun as the first time I Flashed my HD =]
[Edit]
I just noticed the Re-done Captivate guide so that looks like its gonna solve a bunch of my questions! Sorry that I didn't notice it before I posted.
Thank-you everyone that posted!
-Further Questions
Am I going to want to root the phone as soon as I get it?
Would it be best to use the phone with my Ubuntu partition?
I have a feeling I am going to want launcherpro, should I cash out and get LauncherPro Plus?
Heyo N1 community!
So, after much deliberation, I dropped some cash on newegg for the first nexus experience...I also just needed a good backup phone.
That said, I'm probably going to be spending a lot more time here than in the Atrix forums as I'm REALLY liking the N1...and MIUI (...I'm kind of in love).
All this said, I had a couple questions about things I should be wary of...and just am not familiar with.
1. Blackrose
-From what I understand, due to the small ROM capacity, this is used to repartition the N1 to accommodate larger ROMs. I also see something about a custom HBOOT being involved. I don't really know what that is, though. Do most ROMs need this now? I was lucky enough to flash MIUI which apparently doesn't require blackrose. Granted, I don't know any of the implications of Blackrose. Is it reversible? Does it limit you in any way if you're on it?
2. Kernels
-Back on the Captivate, I feel like it was the roaring '50s with kernels. You could flash whichever kernel you wanted on whatever ROM you wanted...it was all about preference. With the Atrix, it's the opposite...doesn't help that there's basically only 1 stable kernel either. That said, I flashed the latest (non-ICS) MIUI and it looks like it comes with a slightly dated CM7 kernel- is this a big deal? Should I look to update it to something more recent/stable/etc? Or are kernels pretty specific as to ROM compatibility?
3. Radios
-Pretty much same situation with the kernels. I want to be careful because I know the N1 shipped for a couple different carriers, T-Mo and AT&T at the forefront. Now, I'm on AT&T, but the box my N1 came in is marked for Vodafone UK. As I understand it, Vodafone's freq's are the same as T-Mo's, right? Is there any difference between my "vodafone" N1 and one designed to work with T-Mo, AT&T, or any others?
4. Hardware issues/life expectancy/replacement options
-First and foremost, I'm still confused as to whether Nexus 1's are even still being manufactured. I heard somewhere that some UK carriers still sell them (obviously Google stopped doing it direct awhile ago). To me, it's the kinda thing where, in all honesty, I'd love to use the N1 as my EDC forever- the screen size is perfect for me, the Dev community is MASSIVE and very experienced, and the phone is simply iconic. That said, though, I'm wondering how long it'll be until things start to bite it and I have to look for a replacement...and if I'll even be able to find one. Alternatively, I've seen a lot of people say that HTC has been pretty forgiving about replacing busted power buttons and the like. Besides the power button, though, is there anything else I should be keeping an eye on?
Lastly, I want to thank all the Devs who've contributed. Poking around through the dev section gave me an overwhelming sense sense of options, and the conversation here seems a bit more mature than over in the Atrix forums ("WHEN WILL WE HAVE CM7/CM9?!" was almost every other thread...and the poor devs got TORN UP trying to contribute what they could).
Sorry if I blinded anybody with all the writing, but I appreciate any advice or input you can give me.
1. You don't need Blackrose for MIUI. Use A2SD and partition your SD card. How? Search. Help - Wiki link is in my signature.
2. You don't need to switch from default MIUI kernel, unless you want to overclock.
3. Doesn't matter, as long as you're on one of the Gingerbread radios. Any of the latest will be good enough. No difference in baseband builds between different N1 models.
4. You're going to eat a lot of pain with screen touch craziness, which is the most painful part of this phone. The second most painful part is sub-par GPU, but unless you game a lot, you won't notice it - MIUI is smooth. So I'm really in doubt you'll want to keep this phone for a long time. In any case, press the power button gently and closer to the inside of the phone, and avoid pressing it as much as you can (use ROMs with trackball wake and screen lock widget).

Thanks for the tip. It occurs to me that I jumped the gun and flashed a ROM before I should have- not that anything bad has happened. Just thinking I'll probably go round two here shortly once I learn all the ins and outs (like Apps2SD...and popping in an SD that bigger than the included 4GB one to make it worthwhile). Thanks for the tips bro.

Not worried about OCing. UVing might be nice...but I'm thinking unnecessary for battery life- First discharge gave me 1 day 12 hours after WHALE-HEAVY use...and even then I still had 20% left.
This is something I'm actually in awe regarding.

Awesome. Now, real quick- did MIUI include a GB radio upon flashing it? I haven't flashed one specifically yet...should I head over to the Kernel/Radio thread and pick one out? Also, just to clarify/double-check, you're saying that a T-Mo N1 = Vodafone UK N1 etc etc? Same hardware and everything? (Obviously excluding N1's designed for AT&T's freq's?)

Ha! Yep, I've definitely gotten some odd touches from the screen even after my little time with it. I've found I am ALWAYS hitting the home button...or the area that REGISTERS as the home button...whenever I go to press the space bar when typing. Quite possible it's due to having only used Android phones w/ larger, 4" screens...so I'm used to "reaching down farther" for the space bar, so to speak. And about trackball/volume wake & screenlock widget- already on it, ha! Not only is it a lot more convenient, but I figured it's something I should get used to in light of the power button's frailty.
It occurs to me- how wiggly is the trackball supposed to be? When I got my phone and started playing with it, I noticed a slight amount of give before it'd click (to select). Is this normal? While it always returns to it's normal amount of...portruding (sp?)/portrusion, should there be NO give before it clicks? Thanks for the input.
Also...about the screen...are there any mods/hacks to make it more accurate/less glitchy? Fix multitouch snapping? Etc?
Lastly, I'd always rock the V6 supercharger script on my Atrix. Now that I'm on MIUI, do they have it baked in? If not, is it compatible? Does it make a difference?
Thanks for the info/input so far bro I really appreciate it.

No rom should include a radio, and as a general rule you should always flash radios from fastboot to avoid any problems.

Hmm...gotcha. Just wondering (as I didn't mess w/ fastboot until the Atrix- all Captivate radios were just flashed in recovery), what problems could arise from non-fastboot flashes? And how likely is this? Thanks for the info btw.
Update:
Well so I quickly checked the Radio thread, specifically the newest one (from a Korean update?).
Read and read and read and read before doing anything...then went and checked my phone only to find out the baseband version in my setting>about phone matches that of the newest one: 5.12.00.08. Don't know what difference it makes, but I have a "U" halfway through instead of an "H." So, two possibilities: Either my phone shipped with it (Odd as it's a Korea update?), or it was included in the ROM. Either way, I haven't noticed any issues, and I figure I'll leave it be.
Thanks again for the info though fellas.
I know your questions probably have been answered but I'll give it a shot:
1 - Blackrose will repartition the N1's partitions regarding cache, data, and such. If you want MIUI or pretty much any Gingerbread ROM you most likely 99.9% don't need Blackrose or a custom partition layout. Only certain ICS ROMs require Blackrose. The custom HBOOT you are referring to is Blackrose and the custom partition sizes. There are no limits if you are on Blackrose, and you can always get rid of it just as easy as installing it. Getting rid of Blackrose HBOOT will also refer you back to the stock partition layouts, if you made any changes while on Blackrose.
2 - There are a rather great deal of kernels for the N1 out there. I can think of at least 5 main ones, such as Wilmonds, IR's, and many more. Most will work with any ROM, such as CM or MIUI. But as always, backup before you flash. As for need, you don't really need to flash a custom kernel yet it can help. Some kernels boast improving animations and performance while others try to boast battery saving. Just check out the comments of each kernel's thread for a true evaluation.
3 - As for radios, flashing is not really that important. Most N1's are on 5.08 version which is the latest release for the US; all be it that is is a year or so old. There is a newer 5.12 radio released in Korea but there is no need to flash/install it. Some say connection is better but there is no difference if you are in the US. No ROM requires a certain radio.
4 - I had my N1 for almost 2 years with absolutely no issue with any buttons. I do hear that some have issues with the power button however. I guess it depends how well you take care of your device. I have dropped my phone very rarely and I take pretty good care of it. No complaints here.
Hope this helped you. And welcome to the N1 community! Any other questions feel free to ask!

Awesome info bro! Your explanation of Blackrose was especially concise, simple, and informative. Thanks for the kernel advice too! I appreciate it man!
Hey fellas, I hate to double post in the interest of bumping, but there are still a couple questions I'm still wondering about, and I'd rather bumprez than make another/2/3 different threads about each question.
The info you've given me so far has been AWESOME, and I'd appreciate any more input you might have.
Thanks in advance fellas.
What are the remaining questions?
Can't go wrong with Nexus One. Any weakness in memory can be dealt with through blackrose and a2sd. Hardware issues are minimal and even potential power switch problem is easily repaired.

So sorry- let me lay them out:
(And my bad for getting back to this so late- been really quite swamped with life!)

Also, I'm wondering about the AMOLED vs SLCD differences- something I don't think I've asked about yet.
Basically, regarding any and all facets of a screen- what are the differences between the AMOLED and the SLCD hardware?
And to reiterate- I'm talking about any kind of difference regarding anything, whether it's vibrancy, clarity, powerdraw, touch-sensitivity/accuracy...anything at all.
Lastly, regarding Blackrose:
So, Androidity3000 gave me a great cliff's notes on Blackrose, but I want to make sure- If I flash Blackrose (which is a custom HBOOT that reconfigures the partition sizes so as to avoid space-constraint issues?) can I just keep that all the time? Can certain ROMs NOT be flashed if I'm running Blackrose? Also, does Blackrose automatically decide the sizes of the new partitions, or do I have to configure the sizes myself? If so, are different configurations better, and why?
Thanks for all the good info and patience so far, breauxs. I appreciate it.
Trackball has some free movement, what you describe seems normal.
I've expressed my opinion on all kinds of "magical" scripts at some other point in time. Look at the free memory you have (which is probably >100MB at any given point in time), and think - do you need anything?
SLCD and AMOLED look a bit different. If you search the forum and Google, I bet you find enough examples and explanations. The question seems way too lazy.
Read the Blackrose thread to understand more, what it is and what it does. Also too lazy of a question.
I just picked up a N1 off ebay. It is in almost new condition got it for $155.00. I moving over from a mytouch 3g fender so the n1 is much better, i love it. This post helped me out alot. I've always wanted the n1 I've had my mytouch since it came out

Glad to hear it bro! I like thinking that there have gotta be others with the same questions/concerns as me, and I'm glad this thread was of some use!
...AND that, as it hopefully filled you in sufficiently, you didn't feel the need to make another thread!
Enjoy the phone man!
