[Q] Simpler and easier way. - GT540 Optimus Android Development

Hello, i'm sorry for being a newbie. I just wanted to get some simpler and easier way to get my GT540 in a Cooked Rom and Modified Kernal. Is there any simpler way to get me to it? Cuz i'm currently coming here from GT-I9000 Android Development since my phone is Galaxy S, and i'm coming all the way from there to here for my girlfriend's phone Please, anyone lead me the way?

Sorry, but there's no real "easy way" to get to where you want to be. You need to upgrade the phone from 1.6 to a 2.1 rom with fastboot (search through the forums for which rom and tutorials).
Then install recovery on the device (again, the forums), from here its usually only a matter of downloading an image file of the few roms available for gt540 and installing it from recovery. Spend a bit of time reading before you start tinkering with it and it'll pay off. I currently have the updated cyanogenmod (beta) installed and its AWESOME, still a bit buggy but pretty cool.
P.S.
Download the android SDK because its pretty much essential to working with the phone from your pc.
Hope this helps.

Rooting and installing new rom. Non-noob inside.

Okay, I've done my fair share of searching numerous forums. So, please don't flame for some noobish questions.
I owned a G1 before and had no problem re-flashing a new rom image every other day. Maybe it's the price tag on my N1 that has had me hesitating with rooting it.
Ok, here is my 'problem' I just got the new OTA update FRG83. I would like to know exactly how I would go about rooting and installing a new ROM on my N1.
Also, what ROM is the best out there for the N1, I used cyanogen on my G1 forever so I really trust his ROMS.
Basically I'm just really afraid of messing my phone up, although I'm sure it's just as easy as it was on my G1.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Right... I've read that.
Just making sure I'm following the correct steps.
First: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792016
Second: Does bootloader have to be unlocked?
Third: Recovery Image
Fourth: Wipe/flash new rom
Anything I'm missing?
No need to unlock - the whole point is rooting w/o unlocking.
Flash the recovery using flash_image method.
Nothing else missing.
okay...
F:\ADB>adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage
I get an error

Anyone? I would realllllly like to root my device?
This thread seems to help with the rooting process. I am already rooted, so I cannot test it.

As for a ROM to use, I use Enomther's official Nexus. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614427 I have tried several different ROM's and this one is hands down the best. I have not used CM6 since RC1, so I cannot speak for how that is now. But Enomther's was way better than CM6 RC1 IMO.
I'm with stickerbob with being rooted and loved enomther's. Now I've moved to MIUI, and I don't believe I'll be looking back anytime soon. Love MIUI, once I flashed the English translation pack 3 that is =D it rocks IMO. If you wanna look into it after root...

[Q] Complete Newbie ICS Help! :)

Hi guys,
Basically I would like to install the ICS rom on my Galaxy S i9000 but have absolutely no knowledge of how to do so having never installed a custom rom before. Looking at the 'tutorial' for installing ICS leaves me just as clueless as it seems the individual steps require a decent knowledge of knowing what you are doing!
Also, I have discovered from attempts in the past that my Galaxy is one of those that is unable to go into download mode so that is another thing that I need help with (the link to the thread for the solution to this problem in the Galaxy FAQ is dead).
So yeah, any help much appreciated or even a point in the direction of the most thorough guide there is.
Cheeers.
Well, before you do anything you need to enable download mode. Think it's a case of enabling USB debugging and then adb, although I never had to do it.
Secondly you should probably stick a stock gingerbread rom on with odin.
Flash a kernel with odin.
Flash ICS
Flash ICS again.
Going straight to ICS with very little experience of custom ROMs may be a bit difficult especially given it's alpha status.
my phone also had the lock on the Download mode, seem like some service provides disable the feature to "try and prevent" people to flash custom roms as this voids warranty in South Africa. I found a fix on Google but cant remember where.. so if you dont get it right... some guys made a homemade jig here is a link on how to make it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
and when flashing a custom rom its best to follow the roms tutorial and usually there are post regard similar issues that could be encounter in the process. so the search function ends up helping alot instead of having to read thru 100 pages lol
its all new to us in the beginning then it just becomes second nature lol
i recon this is a nice tutorial to use
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-update-for-galaxy-s-i9000-custom-rom/
even has a method to return to stock

Josh. This is NOT a rom which you should pop your cherry on. It is buggy, not very fast and you need a good working knowledge of how to recover a soft bricked phone. If you cannot get into download mode, you would be foolish to flash ANY rom. There is a fix, search xda.
I admire the size of your swingers, but would recommend you gain a little more flashing experience.
However, good luck if you do decide to flash - there's plenty of help here if all goes wrong.
i "popped my custom rom cherry" on ICS build 12 i screwed it up when trying to go for build 13 but i found this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14273101&postcount=1
i installed the latest gingerbread kernel then the rom files and it was fine ater that and im just about to put build 14 on now so dont worry to much about it. Ive never got my phone to a state where i cant fix it, so if me a supernoob can recover a brick just about anyone could

Advanced ROM for SCH-i800 - Recommendations?

Just got this tab, and want to upgrade it from the crappy Verizon firmware. Would like the advanced features and root, but it must be stable for work and it must do 3G and/or 4G.
Apparently I have to install a ROM that is specifically for the SCH-i800 and not for the P1000? So how do I identify which ROMs are suitable?
I used to use CM7 on my Nexus One and now use MIUI which I think is great. Experiences on either, or some other flavor?
I am aware that ICS is available, but have the impression that it is not complete or stable. So I'd just as soon stay with Honeycomb or maybe lower as long as it can be relied on.
OK message received, there is none.
This matches my research. CM9 is shot through with bugs, and MIUI development is dead. No other contenders.
So I guess I stay with the factory firmware, root it, remove the crapware and set up security.

UGH, thank you JT. I am having a helluva time with this thing.
Trying SuperOneClick, but it does not recognize the device. No one says, but I suspect it depends on ADB. ADB apparently does not have the drivers for the SCH-i800, and I've no idea where to get them.
The Samsung sync software would not install in my XP running in VirtualBox -- drivers failed to install. So I plan on just putting files on the SD in another machine since I run Debian exclusively.
And there doesn't seem to be an alternative recovery like Clockwork or Amon Ra, but maybe I'm wrong.
Pretty much given up on flashing any better ROM, although I know you've done some good work, maybe for CDMA.
I'll check out that more applicable forum.
I also have the SCH-I800 from Verizon and the only ROM that I found that works with barely any issues is the GB 2.3.5 Galaxy Cube 3. You can find it here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...galaxy-cubed-3-full-rebuild-11-21-11-a-2.html
If you have any questions or if you find any new working ROMS please let me know. Good luck.

[Q] How to pull kernal and rom from stock phone

My wife just received the text from ATT that Gingerbread was ready to download to her Captivate. We are planning on doing that since she is still on Froyo.
My question is this, is there a way to pull the kernal and rom from her phone after she updates and put it on a different Captivate. I would like to learn a little bit about the procedure if there is a way and give it a try. Would Rom Manager do the trick? I have an extra Captivate that was given to me by a friend who upgraded to a different phone so I have a Captivate to "play with". I am trying to learn a little about how all this works so any steps, links, advice, etc would be grealy appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If you are looking for a stock rom I would recommend checking out the stickie in the development thread. It has a variety of one click packages. It would also recommend doing a lot of research before hand. There is a ton of information on these forums. The more you read, the less likely you are to have problems in the process. Good luck!
Sent from my ICS powered SGH-I897.
Here is a method of backing up the whole rom or parts of it. How to make a tar ball, etc. Easier on a Linux system or Mac OS. Cygwin is anoying at time, but will make it work on Windows.
Thanks. I appreciate the info.
You will need root to do that (see the su command?). Search official kk4.

[Q] So confused. Is there a way or not?

Hi there folks!
Im getting mighty confused about this flashing thing.
Im looking to change my ROM to something else then the ICS from Samsung.
Here is the deal.
I read the warning posts and it say (what i think it means) that my build "XLP9" ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung is not safe to do anything on.
I look around on the net to see if there is a way (despite what i read here).
It looks promising.
But all the things i find is ether a lower version of Android (like 2.3.x) or someone is telling me about tons of stuff to download and do before.
So this is were i ask you all.
Do (been searching for 2 days, perhaps my search terms are bad) anyone know if there is a working way to for me to change my version to AOKP for e.g without destroying my phone?
Like i said before, my Build is: XLP9, android version 4.0.3 (from Samsungs update service).
Phone is rooted using CWM.
Its a Note version for the .EU market bought like a few weeks ago (came with 2.3.x i believe).
If you know a thread that contains step by step instructions that will allow me to change the rom, please post it to me here.
Or if I´m screwed for updating to ICS just tell me so to
Cheers

Now that you have upgraded to ICS. Those are the factory settings.
Easiest way to downgrade to GB Is by flashing a stock GB rom via pc Odin.
Most of the new ICS custom ROMs now just require you to install AbyssKernel 4.2, then select advanced options and select reboot recovery. Then you wipe your device (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). From this moment you're free to flash. It all takes less then a minute if you hurry (joking, don't rush when flashing your phone), and it's not very complicated. Do it once and you'll know it's simple.
You need to have a root access first. Plenty of guides how to do it out there.
