[Q] Water -> Dried -> Stuck on downloading - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know I'm at the bottom of the hole. Here is what happened. I had just washed my room last night and there was a little water on my floor. In the night, my phone dropped from my bed and was lying in the little water left behind for say an hour or two.
It was off and there was nothing I could do to switch it on. I let it dry for seven hours.
When I put in the battery, it goes to "Downloading...Do not turn off Target!!!!"
I have been trying to get out of this by pressing the down volume + power + home button. No luck there.
Now I've read that one should put it in a bag of rice if the phone falls in water. Do I have to still do that?

7 hours is not enough. Leave it off for at least few days (better if a week). It takes a very long time since components inside a phone like galaxy S are all crammed together with very little air flow. You can dry it quickly if you take it apart. If not, leave it inside a moisture absorbent ( i.e Silica gel, rice can be used too ) Take out the battery and stop trying to turn it on , you are only running the risk of damaging it further.

Ok. I've stopped watching the download mode screen. I'm going to put it in rice now. My question being if the download screen is coming - how messed up can my phone be? What are the chances of recovery?

Take a look at this link:
http://www.wikihow.com/Save-a-Wet-Cell-Phone

OP wrote in his first post that nothing he did could turn the phone on, implying that he tried to turn his phone on, which in turn implies that he most likely fired his phone.
Best of luck OP. But it's probably too late already. Hate to be the bearer of bad news. You shouldn't have attempted to turn it on.

Thanks But isnt the download screen a good sign in anyway?

Thanks everyone. I've been to get it back (Almost)

I fixed it. The only problems now are:
1) The volume up button is not working
2) If the phone is switched off and then on, it goes to download mode. I have to connect it to the computer to start it properly.
3) The volume bar comes every 5 minutes.
4) The SD card is not detected.

As someone said on a post above you sdhould have given more time to it.The more you turn it on at the moment the more chances are than something is not going to work later.I suggest you should not put the battery into the phone as there might be water between 2 different voltage circuits and one maybe burned. That will waste you phone for ever. You should just put it in a bug of rice and forget about it for 2-3 days.If the phone is working almost now, then there is a lot of chances it will work fully if its totally dry.

[Q] OTA Bricked my Phone - Help!!!!

I forgot that my phone was plugged into my PC with the sd card mounted. I checked for update and it found one and started the download. The download just sat there at 0%. I realized my usb was connected and unmounted it (thinking that the update somehow was waiting for the SD card). No change, so I clicked Cancel on the upload screen. I then tried Check for Update and again and it said "no firmware". I rebooted and tried again. Still same message. I then tried "Resume update" instead of "Check for update". It said it found an update and would reboot the phone in 5 seconds. The phone then rebooted and it started to apply the update. This seemed very wrong to me because the updated certainly didn't have time to download. The update failed and it said it was rebooting my phone. The phone went off and now I can't get it to start back up. I press the power and get nothing. I pulled the battery and sim card. Still nothing. Any ideas?
Yikes, that's a sticky situation you've got yourself into. From reading around the forums it seems that the update was bricking phones anyway; however, from what you described it seems like that isn't your case. If you can't power on your phone, then there isn't a way to head back to stock or fix the update, that I know about. You might think about calling Samsung or AT&T and saying you tried applying the update, but now your phone won't power on.

try holding both volume keys and power button until you see something then release power.
If you bought your phone from an AT&T store and you have one close to you, I would take it in and show it to them. They replaced mine on the spot, took me less than 5 minutes.

I already tried that. I held them for 1 min. It just doesnt turn on. The battery was about 75%, so I know it's not dead.

Check and see if there's a warranty center in your area. AT&T has one on the south side of Baltimore. You walk in, they test it real quick and if they can't fix it, they give you a new phone. Much quicker than exchanging it by mail if there's one close to you.

Yup. Nothing. Screen stays black. No sign of life.
Damn I was really close to messing mine up too then from the sound of it. I noticed my phone downloading some kind of update today too, well I immediately hit cancel, not knowing what it would do and wanting to come do some research here before accepting it. When I went back, I also hit Resume Update and it gave me the same "no firmware" error, then I hit check for update and it gave me an error message that said "You have not waited 24 hours since the last time you checked for an update, please wait 23...."
Guess I wont be trying to update tomorrow afterall
I had the same problem, but my phone completely downloaded the update. Couldn't power it on at all even if I pushed the + - volume button with power button. Took it to ATT and told them that it happened when I applied the update, and since I was over my 30 day update, they called some ATT replacement hotline and they are sending me one today.
ditto on a dead phone because of OTA my wifes not mine(glad it was hers)
stock captivate update stopped at 87% then went black, no power at all, not even the volume +- way
called att 2 day air on a replacement of course its a refurb but better than no phone at all....
oven
Well i am going to sound like nutcase but have you tried putting into the oven? I am being 100% serious. Look over in the i9000 forums and i think there were some people that were bricked beyond recognition and they did some crazyness such as putting it in the oven at 350 untill it was hot to the touch but not melting and it got their phones into download......just a thought and no i am not lying it worked for them!!!!
Best of luck guys
Remove the battery and put it again, without turning the phone on, press volume up + volume down, and then plug it to the USB connected to your computer.

That didn't work either. I will receive a replacement phone tomorrow. I hate getting a refurb. My phone is in perfect condition. I hope the replacement one is too.
Here's something that I did discover. I don't think the phone is actually dead. I think it's stuck in some kind of loop, making it completely unresponsive. I had it sitting in my dest drawer today for several hours. When I took it out it was pretty warm - as if was clocking some pretty serious cpu or network traffic. Either way, it's a brick, but I think it a living brick, not a dead brick. In case you're wondering, my office was like a refridgerator today, so it wasn't from the warm room.

I have received several refurbs over the years and all the phone appear to be brand new. I already exchanged my Captivate one. Not a scratch on them. Even though they say they are refurbs the device appears to be new product. You will not have a problem.
i got mine bricked too, it was perfectly fine before the update... it stopped at 50% and then it said update failed, phone rebooted, and then it never open its eyes again, its DEAD... omg, good job att! morons giving us wrong software...

I've had the same issue but I was able to fix it. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact steps, you will have to try for a few times until you make it work.
When your phone is "dead":
1. Take out SIM+SD cards (keep your battery in)
2. USB connect to your PC
3. Start Odin3
4. VolUp+Power and wait until a few red colored lines will show up (if not then try for a few times until they show up), you should see something like this:
RST_STAT =0x1
PMIC_IRQ =0x3c
..... and so on.
5. When you see the red lines press VolUp+VolDown+Power
6. The red lines will go off/on in a few seconds but you keep holding VolUp+VolDown+Power
7. When red lines will go off for a second time just release Power, you should get back to download mode
8. Use Odin3 to re-flash
Good luck!

[Q] Any way to dump my ROM without switching on phone?

Hi,
My Nexus one died yesterday and will not switch on (the power button is broken (due to pressing it too hard))
The only thing is that it was rooted, and I had flashed fotakill ages ago so it didn't upgrade to Gingerbread.
My network provider is going to do a swap/exchange, tomorrow, and I really want the new phone exactly as this phone was (with fotakill and a few other custom apks)
Now bearing in mind that the power button is kaputz, is there any way I can make abackup/copy/dump of my current ROM ie. by connecting it to the PC, or will I just have to start from scratch?
The trick to turn a N1 on without the power button is to connect it to your charger and insert and remove the battery (whilst plugged in) a couple of times. Eventually it'll get confused and turn on! Best of luck.
You are a god!!!!
Thank you!!!!!
although it only worked once.

Best using a USB cable for this trick as it works everytime!
Plug in usb cable (obviously connected to computer) and when the orange light comes on take out battery and as soon as the light goes out put the battery in quickly and it turns on. I've been doing this for several months now and along with two apps 'Lock screen' and 'Quickboot' I haven't looked back or even missed the power button.
I can also get you booted to recovery using this method and fastboot if you need it.

Copy Ra's recovery to your sdk/tools folder and open a command prompt and boot phone to bootloader (do this by using the trick above to switch phone on whilst holding the trackball down and you will be in bootloader mode) plug in usb if not already attached and it will say in red highlight 'Fastboot usb' and in the command prompt type -
fastboot boot c:\sdk\tools\recovery221.img (rename as appropriate)
This will use the recovery on your computer to boot your phone and allow you to do whatever you please, for your case that would be backing up your rom and transfering to the computer for safe keeping. Any problems catch me in the irc help channel in my sig and I'll sign in now for you just in case.
This is really starting to p me off.
It worked and turned on the second time I tried it but then I remembered I didn't have the the SD card in the phone toperform a rom backup.
Been trying to get it back on for the last hour non stop, my fingers are giving up.

Just chill its easy.
Take a deep breath and just follow my instructions.
Plug phone into pc and the charging light comes on after a few seconds.
Pull out battery slightly so its just off the pins and wait for the charging light to go out.
QUICKLY slot the battery back into place (if the lights start flashing when battery is out then its to late and start again)
Phone should boot without a problem. Its all about timing and if you take it easy and get yourself set before doing it trust me it becomes that easy you don't even have to be looking at the lights
I promise you I'm following your exact instructions and nothing happens, the orange light just turns back on. Seriously gonna throw this phone out the window in a minute.

Mines never 'confused' it just switches on. I only have to do it once, never repeatedly. Try take a five minute break, have a cuppa and come back when less frustrated.
Dunno what's wrong, just doesn't want to play, so strange that it worked once though earlier on.
As i said its all about timing fella, I have just got used to it now so its simple for me but understand your frustration. Only thing I can say is when that light goes out as you release the battery slightly (if you set the battery so its out already and being held in place with your thumb to keep the connection it makes it easier) and the millisecond that light goes out the battery get pushed back in to make the connection and hey presto it should work as I'm doing it myself as I type.
Definitely doesn't want to turn on anymore, I'm doing it exactly as you described above with no luck.
Maybe..... does anyone know if ADB can power on a device, I know it can reboot

It can't as it needs the phone on to run the commands. This is your only option. Just wondering your battery is charged?
yes, lol, it's now fully charged as the orange light is now green.
This is what I'm doing:
Back cover removed
Battery slightly raised (for ease) but held in place by thumb
Insert usb (connected to computer) into phone
Light turns orange (now green because fully charged)
Remove battery
Light stays on for about one second
Light goes off
Battery is then re-inserted as soon as that happens
Light then turns back to green
Bums
Start again

Nexus 4 Screen Wouldn't Turn On

Left my phone plugged in over night like a I always do. Woke up today and tried to turn the screen on but there was nothing. It wouldn't come on. Pressed the power button over and over but nothing. Tried a three finger reboot. Felt it vibrate signalling it rebooted. Still no screen.
Removed my bumper case to make sure I was pressing the button all the way down. Was able to get the little vibrate signal that the power menu prompt popped up but still no screen. Held the power button for 30 seconds. Still nothing.
Finally held down power button + volume up and the device rebooted and the boot animation came up. Screen works fine again.
So I guess the point of this post is to let people know my sets in case the encounter this problem. Hopefully it works for you as well and you don't have to send your device back.

I had a similar situation where I was toggling my nexus 4s brightness settings and when you have it at the darkest setting it is pitch black. Like there's no light on at all. I just had to hit the spot that I did before and bring the light settings back up. So maybe you can boot it up unlock it on the blank screen and two finger pull down and try pressing the light toggle?

exactly the same here. felt like i had dropped a baby on it's head haha. i wish i knew a way to figure out what caused it.
My wife and I have been having the same issue, and I'm surprised that there's not more reports of this behavior The worst part is that I use my phone as an alarm, and the alarm won't go off if this happens in the night.
It has happened to me 3 times now, and 2 times in one day for my wife. Holding down the power button for ~20 seconds will cause the reboot, which is the good news. This morning after holding down the power button I noticed the notification light flashing red.
The phone appears to be still on, because if it happens overnight I will still see the white notification light flashing even though the screen won't turn on.
I had this problem on faux123 kernel on the second day after I got my Nexus 4.
Doesn't encounter it on franco.Kernel...
Sleep of death brozillas! Happens to all android phones. Happened to all my phones listed in my signature. You can reboot the device and you should be good. For the dude that's missing his alarm you should do a factory reset if you are stock or if you have root do not set your min cpu values to less than 3xx MHz.

Same thing happened to me on my N4. Did a hard reboot and it came back on. Has happened at least twice since then, usually after being plugged in.

I observed the same issue (going to standby, then cannot switch on within an hour) with my [just bought] Nexus 4 (latest 4.2.2 firmware OTA updated, nothing special in setup, second day of use).
Certainly must be difficult to say if it's hardware of software (that is, JB/drivers, since I cannot see how such issue can be caused by any virtual machine application) and when/if the latter will be fixed. I have another such great device already -- ASUS TF700 transformer, with similar "everything works, just reboots occasionally", which I think is enough for me
As with the ASUS Transformer case, I have trouble understanding: if it's the issue with all devices/firmware, although not too frequent -- then why everybody does not complain/return the units massively: the phone is pretty unusable if it cannot be relied upon. If it's just some isolated cases with particular units -- then what happened to QA/testing at LG...
So I guess I am going to return it while I can.
Too bad, good model otherwise, will have to see other phones or wait/observe.
My point is, I understand: fairly new device, can have quite a few faults to be fixed later -- now everybody seem to work that way, for better or worse.
It can have more or less beautiful (or ugly) designs, more or less features, larger or smaller batteries/working time; it can have problems with data connectivity, it can have better or worse browser (or the lack thereof completely). I'm fine with the lack of text reflow in Chrome although that was surprising.
One thing a phone/communicator/PDA absolutely cannot do, provided its battery is not empty, is going into "sleep of death"-like states -- it just cannot serve its purpose then, I cannot see how people sell it at all...
I have had a similar issue before, but i have experienced it when my phone has been through one of 2 sets of scenarios.
1 - It gets really warm and the screen becomes unresponsive, dead if you will. The hard reboot fixes this.
2 - When the signal to my phone is sporadic. An example of this would be my recent trip to London. I was on the underground quite a lot, and I'd lose signal quite often whilst travelling. On a couple of occasions i had to reboot my phone the hard way to get it going again.
Hope this helps?
In my case the device was lying near me on the sofa, the time between its going to standby and my attempt to switch it on was something within 1 hour. Nothing especially intensive had been done before.
BTW, while the phone was in that state, trying to call it resulted in long tones, i.e., apparently the radio/cell was online.
Hope this will help somebody, I returned mine.
Good evening. First post but long time lurker. My N4 is unrooted and on 4.2.2. I'm troubled with this as well especially so when the alarm doesn't ring in the morning after it's crashed overnight and I'm late for work!
Not sure if this is relevant though. I don't listen to music frequently on my N4 but the 3 times it had crashed overnight I had been listening to music before going to bed. Twice using Google music being streamed via my home wifi and once using poweramp with music on internal memory. I remember on 2 occasions the phone feeling rather hot as I was plugging the charger in as I was about to turn in.
I suspect there's a process that's causing the the phone to overload/ overheat and then switch off as a result. Because it's plugged in, it'll just continue to charge overnight and present you with a 100% battery in the morning once you've got it to reset again.
I have also found that doing a soft reset before going to bed prevents this from happening.
Just my observations.
Hi all, I got my Nexus 4 a week ago to replace a broken HTC One X (The cost of repairs was almost equal to the cost of a new Nexus 4). Since I got it, SoD happened twice, both times when I left it to charge overnight. The weird thing is that I have this LED application that blinks the notification light when charging with screen off. When I unplugged the phone, the LED was still blinking as if charging, so the phone is definitely not dead. I will try to set it to day-dream while charging and see if it helps. If it does, it might be considered a way of Google encouraging developers (like myself) to create more daydream apps .
Good morning from beyond the pond,
had the same thing happening as described in the first post solution (pressing POWER+VOL UP) helped to reboot my device.
Only thing that was showing was the led, flashing a blueish white light.
Now runs again on rasbeanjelly. Thanks to OP.
EDIT: since this happened the first time, I thought about what I had altered in my setup.
Only thing that was new was "Greenify". Maybe it sent the APEX launcher into standby?!
Having same problem on my 1 week older n4, my friend having the same problem . only thing in commune we have is the WHATSAPP app that once the phone restart it give a notification that the phone date is wrong, once I look at the date settings yes it is wrong, it says 1970 ,so I have to reset it. It does it every time the problem happens ,can this be a clue???

I'm having similar problems.
The first time I believe it was just an issue of slight overheating. I turned off the screen but left Google Maps running & put it in my bag. It didn't actually turn off, but the screen didn't want to come on when I took it out later. I did notice it was hot, and after it cooled for a couple mins, it worked fine again. I haven't done this again, and so far, so good.
However, now, on occasion the phone won't respond to the power button. I've never had to actually do a reset - it will eventually decide to work after a couple of presses.. but when it does, it will be slow to come on. The screen will be backlit (but black) for a few seconds, then it will load and respond as normal.
Since the light comes on prior to the screen, it seems like a software rather than hardware issue to me. If the screen was damaged, I don't think it would act that way. I don't know phones, but that's my intuition. I'm going to try and remember to turn it off on occasion and see if that helps. I don't think it's been reset since the last push update.
(I'm rooted, but stock)

Galaxy note wont turn ON.

Hi, I am using a galaxy Note in India and it is about 14 months old. I was working on internet and it freezes in between, so this time it wont even turn off or give any option when I pressed power button so I took the battery off after about waiting for 10 min. Then I turned it back ON It gave me error Encryption Failed Reset your phone.
I again tried to restart the phone, Still the same error. I again tried to restart and this time it wont even start Nothing happen just a dead screen.
1. Battery charge is full
2. it wont turn on and when pressing vdown + middle button + power button nothing happens just black screen always.
3. Taken the battery off number of times and then also tried, No Luck.
4 Even the computer wont even recognize it.

How are you sure that the battery is good and charged. Normally after one year if the usage is heavy, the chances of battery down happens. So make sure battery is good. Secondly you mentioned volume down button, how about vol up button ie recovery mode?

This happened to me as well last week. Tried everything but failed.
I did below steps and my phone is up & working
1) Remove the battery and keep it in a dry place for 4-6 hours (Very important step to make this work)
2) Place the battery back into computer and do not turn ON the phone
3) Plug the phone to wall charger and charge the phone for at least an Hour (I kept for 2 Hrs)
4) Remove the charger and gently press the power button for 15 secs
5) This should turn the phone back ON
Above steps helped for me. Let me know if this worked for you also

Ankush,
In your case I can think of only 2 things
1) If you have CWM installed then
press and hold "Volume UP Key + Power Key + Home Key" all together for 30 secs (may be a min) and see if you get recovery screen
If yes then all is ok & you just need to flash a new ROM
2) If you do not have CWM then
press and hold "Volume Down Key + Power Key + Home Key" all together for 30 secs (may be a min) and see if you get a custom screen
If yes then you can install custom ROM (or original ROM) using ODIN.
Let me know if anything helps you here

This step kinda weird.. Since I my note never get wet. I hope it will work.. I tried it later.. I dont have much budget to upgadet to Note 3 now. :crying:
Same kind of error
Over the night my phone closed. When I try to open it, on the screen apeared "Insert PIN to decrypt your ~something~ ". I never encrypted my phone so I tried to restart. I got stuck on the samsung logo. Then I removed the battery and put it back in and my device never started again. I have 2 batteries and none of them worked. I can charge the batteries independently and this is not the issue.

Have the same problem right now.. did you find a solution eventually?
Same happened to my device today. Had trouble with some apps before. Wanted to play back a two days old backup. But my phone never woke up again. Shut down forever. Never got to recovery. Had the latest cm11 nightly. Now its dead! RIP. My dear friend. We've gone a long way together. Never intended to replace you anytime soon. But I can't be without a Phone. Moving on to Galaxy S5 now. Hope it can fill the gapp.
Same here, completely dead after a reboot. I took it apart but I see no damage or signs of burn damage anywhere on the motherboard or other components. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot and find out specifically what happened?
i am not sure, mayb the phone is design to last for only certain years, new apps launch make the phone in applicable for be running with latest apps and everything. Or mayb the phone is design with a timer to self destroy its chip or component after specific numbers of days being used??

[Q] Z1 wont boot, 3 short vibrations

I have Z1 with latest stock firmware.
Yesterday My phone suddenly went off (could be went to empty battery) and won't start.
If I plug it to changer - screen lights up, shows SONY logo, then charging indicator and screen goes black after like 15s.
Clicking Power button forces phone to vibrate 3 times briefly, with led off. After a few seconds - led goes red, sony logo shows up, charging indicator.
I cant do anything else, without changer I cant even get these 3 vibrates.
----
In the past a few times I was unable to start the phone with some chargers, if batter have been emptied, looked like they were too week to provide required current (on of them was 0.7A), but changing chargers usually helped to boot the phone. This time - it doesn't :/
Any ideas?

Can you get into flash mode?
Sent from my Xperia Z1 using Tapatalk
Seems like semi brick
Read the gides they are tons of them
Leave it on a mains charger for 24 hours then try again. If that doesn't boot it, then flash a stock FTF or force a software repair on PCComapnion
I'll try to do software repair on PCComapnion. Looks like a good tutorialtalk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Ion/Detailed-Software-Repair-Instructions-using-Pc-Companion-Windows/td-p/249946?
Does this 3 short vibrates has some special meaning?
----
I just noticed some fog under camera lenses, I have no idea how it got here :/
I've read that back cover is glued to the phone. Is it possible that this glue layer got faulty and let water in because phone was overheating? E.g. playing some games was cousing it to get really hot.

No.
But I don't know if my phone is off, or just screen is blank. But after pushing off button (the red one next to SIM), holding volume down and plugging to PC - nothing happens.
Sometimes windows tells me that malfunctioned USB device was connected :/
Download flashtool by Androxyde. Search an good ftf and download it into the firmware folder from flashtool. Your phone must be powered off now. Open flashtool and click the lightning icon. Select flashmode and load the firmware. Wait till a new window appears and then press volume down. Hold it and plug in the micro usb cable from your pc to your phone. Flashtool now flashes the firmware and your phone is probably working fine again! Did you have any backups? I often backup my phone to prevent data loss in this kind of situations! Hope this works for you!

Yes, it shutting Down. To be sure just keep pushing Volume UP + Power Button and when you will feel 3 vibration then you can be sure the phone is completely off. Hold Volume down and plug into PC, you phone should be recognize in Flashmode.
I took it to warranty service, apparently they had to replace main board :|
As far as they told me, they tried to reinstall software, but it failed.
Now I have Andorid 4.4 (was this already officially released for Z1 wordwide?)
My z1 totalled itself overnight... left on charge overnight and took it off charge and... nothing.. totally dead.. tried everything. . All of the button combinations even the red reset button but nothing. . No lights showing no vibration. . Have had to take it in to Vodafone for a repair.. I really am disappointed with this fone... I wont get it back until at least 6th May!.... wish I had waited for the m8 instead of getting this pile of junk...
Z1 vibrates three times and turns off! TRY THIS!
My friend, it happened with me and in my case I am sure it was caused by water even with the covers closed properly the water goes where it shoud not go. After my phone died I put It to charge and the sony logo appeared and started to charge normaly but when i tried to turn it on the phone would vibrate 3 times and start all over again on the charging screen.
The only solution was to use a hair dryer, First step: take your sim card and memory card out of the device sou the air can circulate better. Now use the hair dryer in the hot mode, becareful not to damage getting it too close to the phone but know that it should get hot enough to vaporize the water inside so it has to get a high temperature.
Move the hair dryer heating all sides of the phone and inside where you opened the covers. I had to do it for a long time to make it work again. the phone is working fine now, just as it was before.
Dont believe sony about been waterproof, it can become an expensive nightmare, only use in water if you really need, many people are having problem even with covers well closed and if you still do it, make sure you don´t press the power or volume buttons under water.
I hope it works for you!!

Yes! Exactly, at least about the not-really-water-proof part... Happened to my gf's Z1. We left the phone in rice for a whole 24 hours and that did it for us... A little less agressive than the dryer, but same cause/result.
EDIT: grammar
