So, I tried to put another kernel on my AT&T Captivate i9000 and it just bricked my phone. I read around for a while before I did it and thought I had the correct kernel for my captivate. For a minute I could get to the ClockworkMod Recovery menu by holding down the volume buttons and then going to download mode which is my ultimate goal.
I downloaded kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5 which is the original kernel and I thought my Captivate would work, and boy was I wrong. I'm stuck on the Android system recovery <2e> screen with options reboot system now TRIED IT, reinstall packages TRIED IT, delete user data and delete cache data.
I have adb installed and I know how to use it but it's not recognizing my device when I'm in the correct folder and I have ALL the newest drivers. I thought it would be easier to do adb recovery download because at first it did recognize my device and now it won't, so I can't go the adb method. I turned off the device, took the battery out, the sim out and held down the volume keys plugged in the usb and I'm back to square one.
I also have Odin3 and also Odin One-Click Downloader downloaded. As for Odin3, I have the .pit file, the file for the PDA section, the PHONE, and the CSC section. I've looked at every single thing on the Internet today and I can't get my phone back into the download mode so I can flash it, it's stuck.
When I click reinstall packages I get the following error
"E: Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
E: Can't mount /dev/block/st111
(Invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /dev/block/st111

I'm stuck on that screen and no matter how many times I hold down the vol. keys or do any combination, I'm still stuck there when the phones starts back up. Sorry for the long story but please help. I trust this community. help !!

Have you tried:
Pull USB cable.
Open JF6 ODEN install I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0
Pull Battery
Put usb in
While holding both volume up/down insert battery
It should go into download.
Start Oden and the after reboot
Pull usb
select USB development
Reconnect usb
Master clear.
-- It has worked for me.
Hold Volume Down, Home, and Power on. Turn on odin(or heimdall), plug usb in phone, and then in computer. Correct order or you get spanked.
Also, if you download DG's stock odin package it only works once for me, after that i have to re-download it.
FTR: use Neldar's kernel flashing app, it works wonders.
Also, if you use odin and it fails you have to close odin, then re-open it. Same for Download mode, you can't flash 2 packages. Just use DG's One-Click, you have corrupted /data or /dbdata, whichever contains block st111.

If taking the battery out and then plugging in the USB cable and holding both volume buttons while inserting the battery doesn't work then you may need a jig. And in the future use the proper stock firmware so as not to disable your button combos (and use it sparingly, since flashing to stock is almost never necessary).

Sorry, I don't quite understand. Are you saying that once you're on the screen, you can scroll through the options but can't select anything with the power button? Or that selecting something just reboots your phone back into the recovery menu?

Are you sure power is working? I can't tell what you are saying, but it sounds like either the phone is freezing after you select something or the power button isn't working, preventing you from doing anything with the menu. The latter is a known issue with some kernels.
Hi,
I guess I did something a bit stupid, went into recovery and formated /system, /cache, /data, did factory reset and then rebooted my phone.
I get the boot screen with the samsung logo, then the cm7 logo and then something to do with the recovery appears really fast:
Code:
-- Installing
Finding update package...
E:unkown volume for path []
E:can't mount
Installation aborted
And then back to samsung logo, etc.
The 3-button access to download or recovery mode doesn't work. If I plug the USB cable, Windows does that "device connected" sound and then disconnects again each time it loops, but ADB can never find it.
So I guess my question is, is there anything else I can try before buying the usb dongle?
Have you tried pulling out the batt and trying for download mode?
If you mean taking out the battery and reinserting it, yes, I've tried it. Taking out the battery is the only way to stop the loop lol
If you meant actually going into download mode without the battery, I just tried plugging the USB cable and hitting the 3 buttons for a while and nothing happened. Unless it is some different key combination when the battery is out.

Hi all,
i've bricked my ACE by flashing it to CM not by Odin but by pressing <Install from ZIP> in the recovery mode ...
After it i think the filesystem was destroyed (got errors like "E:failed to mount /system (Invalid argument)").
I would flash it again but this time by Odin, and first of all flash CWM... but the issue is my ACE is not recognized
by Windows when connected to USB. I have tried reinstalling Kies, Samsung drivers without Kies, different USB ports and also
different PCs -> no result :crying:
Is there a way to recover the filesystem without using USB? Or how can i connect that damn thing to USB with properly recognize?
I have tried to give ACE to Samsung service, but all that they wrote was: "... irreparable damage due to damp ..." WTF?!?!
Please someone try to help me.
Thanks a lot.
You can't do anything if even Samsung gave up on it (they can revive almost all of there phones) .
However you could post this info so someone else does not make the same mistake.
1. Full phone model info
2. ROM you were originally on
3. Which recovery you used
4. Odin version
5. Which CM you flashed
6. What carrier(operator) are you on (the phone might had been locked)
I have managed to check if the phone is actually working or not even in the particular case you mention where it does not seem to turn on at all.
1)Kill KiesTrayAgent.
2)Remove the battery and usb cable.
3)Plug usb cable (also to the computer).
4)Keep pressed all buttons; Vol Up, Vol Down, Home and Power.
5)Replace the battery.
6)Let go of the buttons.
7)Odin recognizes the phone but will not connect to it.
If it does not work (the key combination might be wrong), try again with Up, Home and Power or Down, Home and Power.
One of those 3 combinations worked for me and realized that the phone was hard bricked.
Eventually I managed to revive it (although not myself)
The only thing that you may do is press VolDown + menu + powerbutton with odin . It will open the download mode. If it not work, your motherboard is burned!
Sorry for my bad english.
I think you used stock recovery. U need custom extended recoveries like CWM 5 to flash roms.

Title says it all. But for those that want to know a bit more in detail about what's going on, I tried to install this custom ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-oneui-2-5-twrp-ncx-2-5-for-a71-sm-a715f.4174135/ Clearly I did something wrong (a bit more clarification in that guide would help people not used to rooting an Android device getting through that process easier), so now I want to go to square 1 by installing the stock ROM again. But the thing is, after installing multidisabler through TWRP, the phone is not permanently stuck into a bootloop and now I can't even go into safemode, nor download mode, and I can't enter the recovery mode, the only thing my phone is capable of doing is to restart by itself by holding the volume down and the power buttons at the same time, and now ADB nor Fastboot can't detect my device (the PC does a Samsung device being connected though, so it's not a hardbrick, I guess).
Samsung devices do not use Fastboot. You should restore through Odin instead.
Try the following:
1. Download Odin on your computer, you can get it from here. Extract it into a folder.
2. Download the firmware for your device. Find out your device model first and then look on http://samfw.com, I've downloaded from there a lot in the past, it works great.
3. Extract the firmware, you should get five files: AP, BL, CP, CSC, and HOME_CSC.
4. Make sure your device is powered off, and press power + volume down + bixby. You should be asked to confirm you want to enter download mode, press the volume up button.
5. Plug your device into the computer, then select the files for all the slots. Use CSC, not HOME_CSC for CSC (CSC is for fresh restore, HOME_CSC is for software update).
6. A device should show in the top bar, something like [COM:6]. This means your device is connected. If it isn't there, make sure your device is plugged in and in Download Mode.
7. Click flash. The firmware should start to flash and there should be a progress bar in Download Mode. Once it's finished your device should reboot into the system.

Well, trying to reflash everything through Odin has been a thing I tried to do, but how am I supposed to shutdown a phone that is stuck at the Samsung logo (is there any combination to shutdown a Samsung during the boot process?)? And even after that, how am I supposed to press "power + volume down + bixby" if both the power and bixby buttons are the same buttons?

I tried entering Download Mode hours ago, but to no avail. Even before flashing mutidisabler through TWRP (and thus, the phone was working), I had to use ADB in order to make my phone be able to enter Recovery Mode, since the combo for recovery and download mode just made my phone make a loud noise and restart my phone onto safe mode.
Ok, here's an update, apparently pressing those buttons, makes the screen have the same, but at least Odin recognizes the drive, but now I'm stuck at this error: "Complete(Write) operation failed."
Something's weird here, I'm 99.9% sure I did activate USB debugging for this phone, although that was just before wiping the entire drive before the phone got stuck in this loop.
Fixed. Many thanks to @hainguyenthao for helping me out ^^

I'm sorry to hear that you had trouble installing the ROM and I'm glad you were able to fix it.
I unfortunately can't see a way that I could make the tutorial on how to install the ROM any easier. I'm almost certain I covered all my bases going over the perquisites and how to install the ROM. I also have a Telegram group in that thread so that users can join if they are ever stuck in any of the steps so that either me or other users that have successfully installed the ROM can help people in doubt since I'm not available 100% of the time. If you ever decide to give it a try again, don't be shy, you can always join the group and request for help.
