SGS Doesn't Boot Up - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I got my SGS a couple of weeks now and I rooted it and put Dl mode, recovery mode and Darky's ROM v9.2 on it.
Now, a couple of weeks later i try to unlock my phone but the touchscreen doesn't respond. Powering off didn't work either so i pulled the battery and tried to boot up again but it doesn't go further then the Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen.
I can't get into recovery mode but I can still get into download mode...
I tried to repair trough odin but I'm not even so sure I'm doing that right (kinda an android noob still). (I used I9000XXJPO.rar and s1_odin_20100803.pit)
Anyone know how to get me out of this situation ?
Any help is wildly apreciated,
thanx

Join the club, I've done everything these pages have said to do re: rooting and installing new ROMs, put Darky's 9.2 on with the latest SpeedMod, all running well except for mobile internet (not wi-fi) being very slow. I found an app on Market for keeping an eye on battery stats, installed it, and within the space of four hours I went from 100% battery to dead, the device got extremely hot, and now it won't start in any way shape or form. Just put a brand new battery in it, tried to go again, but it charged for about 20 mins and got very hot while charging. Now I'm back to square one, no way of turning the device on at all, and going out of my mind cos I can't find the original Virgin Mobile Australia ROM and the stock kernel so I can unroot it for warranty.
Going nuts here.....

I seem to be able to install to the phone in download mode just fine so I'm not completely giving up...
Just hope someone will know how to solve it rather then sending it to Samsung for repair.

Same thing happened to me.
My phone is froyo.ugjl2 (bell phone)
I was following the video for Darky's 9.2
I tried using with and without s1_odin_20100512.pit
used CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.tar
I tried others but I always get the same result. Odin says it passed, it shuts down and doesn't reboot. I can get back to download but no further.
HHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957868

Doesn't work. I only get the download screen, not the recovery.
I tried the other PIT files.
I tried with the repartition as well. Took longer but still didn't reboot.

That's the screen you need. DOWNLOAD enables you to flash new firmware or kernels.

ok... this is what I am doing, tell me if I'm doing anything wrong or am missing any steps:
I put the phone in download mode
I open ODIN and choose a PIT file and PDA
I check repartition
I plug the phone in and start it.
It goes through and passes. turns off the device and then nothing.
in order to get it back to the download, I need to unplug the USB. I can do nothing else with it except go to the download screen.

Thats right, but does odin regonise ur phone? When you put it in download does a yellow com:id pop up in odin. If not then you need the galaxy s drivers

it does recognize it before it goes through the process.
here's a paste of the log:

then the phone turns off, ODIN shows a pass and the ID COM is no longer yellow.

No kies running in the background? Hmmmm. And phone doesnt start up after that either. Well the other solution is jm8 firmware instead of.jpu.

I get the same thing done as cereberus99 but my phone does reboot, then hangs again at the same samsung screen.
I will try to flash other firmwares to it and hope its gonna be successfull, I'll let u know if I get it done

sigh...
OK!
So I got a little further...
I used 512 PIT and Aries_P-SBL.tar.md5 with partition and I got to clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.0 speedmod ULFK
being that it's 5am here, Im exhausted...
what should be my next step?

Well getting into recovery is good i guess...
Im downloading the same file as u did, will try it at home.
I will also download jpu and jm8 like icejagans said.
Im currently at work so can't try stuff out cuz i left my SGS at home...
Tonight i will be trying to bring my SGS to life again, I will let know if I get something done.
Shouldnt U try to install a ROM at this point ?
Damn a workday is long without ur Android to play with ...

Do you have usb de-bugging mode on!!

I can't get into Recovery, Download or anything, the battery is flat as a tack, and by the blazes of hell isn't the chassis hot! I'm gonna grab yet another brand new battery tomorrow, hopefully it gets the device running for long enough for me to flash a new kernel and ROM into it. All user data is backed up, so I have every intention of wiping it clean on reinvoke...

I've fixed my phone as far as i know .
I flashed it in Odin using I9000XXJPU (from samfirmware.com) without a pid file (like it said on the site).
After that the phone rebooted and it hang on the first samsung screen (like it did before).
I waited a period of time and then held power + vol up + menu to get to recovery and it did. Recovery said something about updating and then screen went black and the phone rebooted again, this time into android .
I lost all my data and stuff but my phone is working again and I'm happy .
Edit: Phone seemed to boot up properly but after a while stopped responding again.
Touch screen didnt respond and after a reboot the phone is in same state again.
WTF...
Hope yall can put this to good use.

Ok, got a little bit further but now encountering another issue:
I tried the following from electroz's post from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946523&highlight=UGJL2+UGJH2&page=2
download UGJH2 and flash it without "phone bootloader update", without pit and no partition.
then flash UGJL2 with "phone bootloader update", without pit, and no partition.
it did go into the android system recovery 3e

seems like if i could just push a new update.zip file on the device, I'd be good to go. problem is, my computer does not see the device as a mass storage device.
I will try installing Kies (I thought it was on my computer)
or see if i can do it with ADB (once I learn all the intricacies)
any suggestions?

I believe your phone has officially been bricked.
I am sorry to be the one to break the bad news to you. My first Galaxy S died of this disease; I tried very hard to revive it whilst it was in coma, however I did not prevail.

Odin flash not proceeding, Android not booting

Well, I guess I messed my SGS up.
A short overview of what happened:
I tried to replace framework-res.apk on the official Froyo (rooted using OneClickRoot method) with one I modified. After deleting the original file I was unable to move the new one into its place as, despite me deleting a few ringtones, it kept stating that not enough space was available. So I decided to go into recovery mode, hoping I'd be able to fix this (I had a backup of the file on /sdcard/) I wanted via adb's shell from there. Well, su doesn't work in recovery mode ("Permission denied") and neither does adb remount ("remount failed: No such file or directory").
This is where the real trouble starts:
When I launch Odin3 (1.30), the phone seems to be recognised - if a yellow field with a COM port listed and "<ID:0/009> Added!!" in the message area is any indication. After selecting my PIT and PDA file and clicking Start, this is what Odin tells me:
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> SetupConnection..
Aaaand that's it. I have tried both with the 512 and 803 PIT and even tried flashing JPK onto it to no avail, it just stays stuck at SetupConnection.
I also wiped everything on the phone as well just to make sure nothing is interfering. Thanks to me messing with the framework-res.apk, adb can't be used while the phone is "running" Android (with a black screen and I suppose constant FC everywhere because of the vibrations).
I'm pretty much out of ideas right now after having tried for hours to revive my baby, but maybe one of you magicians out there can help me find something I haven't thought of yet?
Remove the battery and put i back.
Go to download mode.
Try again.
Sometimes you need to reinstall the drivers.
If you have more usb stuff locked up. Remove them. Odin is a little baby

Welcome back in our family.
I bought a New Samsung Galaxy TAB, just two days back, from Amazon.com and was shipped to Washington DC. It's an unlocked version that has no Operator logos on it. It was indeed an awesome thing until I used my magic hands on it only 15 hours after I received.
I had a problem with Arabic Characters; they were disconnected and sometimes reversed. So, I searched over the net for one day and chose to install a ROM from Samfirmware.com. I chose the latest firmware from the table of arabic firmwares. It's P1000JPJM5. (P1000JPJM5 ## P1.PIT Version 2.2 2011 January), so here are the steps that I've gone through:
1. Download the firmware.
2. I use the Odin 1.7 and applied the PIT file first. It finished successfully in 11 seconds.
3. I put the Galaxy tab in the Download mode (decrease volume + Power).
4. I applied the PDA using the Odin 1.7, I chose the TAR file that came with the P1000JPJM5 downloaded file.
5. A light blue indicator started just below the Download logo, the indicator progressed cheerfully, but suddenly stopped. I checked the Odin, and found a "FAILED!" sign. I searched the log, and found the following error:
<ID:0/045> cashe.rfs
<ID:0/045> Modem.bin
<ID:0/045> Complete(Write) Operation failed
<ID:0/045> All threads completed. (Succeed 0/ Failed 1)
attached is a jpg file having the error exactly.
6. Regardless of the warning saying "Don't unplug the target" or whatever it said by that time, and since the application of the firmware stopped, I unplugged the USB cable. I did that after waiting for 20 minutes whereas the Galaxy Tab didn't show any response but that download logo and the non-moving indicator.
7. After I did that, the Galaxy Tab became dead. Whenever I attach it to the computer, it displays a 3 icons screen; a computer, a phone, and a warning triangle with an exclamation mark. I assume that this means that there is an error in the connection between the Tab and the computer.
8. No matter how many times I tried the Download, recovery or any other thing, the phone would only display one of two things, the 3 icons screen that I listed in the previous step, or the Battery screen showing a grey battery.
HELLLLLP!!!!

Go to samfirmware.com download the files for your device.
Select pit file then check repartition - flash
Select pda csc modem, uncheck repartition - flash.

Thanks Lucian, This is exactly what I did in the first place. Used Odin 1.7 and applied the PIT file coming with it, then applied the P1000JPJM5 PDA and CSC modem file.
Unless the P1000JPJM5 is not for my device?? How to know?
Lucian, any clue?
My tab is dead after I tried to install an arabic firmware from samfirware.com. I bought my tab originally from the US. Now, I'll download the "suitable" firmware from samfirmware.com as you advised, but How would I ever know the suitable firmware given that my device is exactly this one (that's where I bought)(my devise is dead now and can only display the download mode):

I have been searching around forums looking for advice and have been unable to locate a solution so here seems as good a place as any to ask for help. I have an unlocked gtp-1000 that has been running overcome 1.4.5 for last month very nicely until tonight when I thought it would be a good idea to get some gingerbread goodness like I have been using on my nexus one. was going to flash Overcome ROM v2.0.0 BETA 2 and was following guide but only got halfway through flashing stock gingerbread with odin when laptop unexpectedly did a restart for an unknown reason while I was away getting a snack. was unsure whether flashing process had been completed so opened odin again and tried reflashing. couldnt get past
setup connection...
so tried to reboot into download mode and then powered down. now tab is dead. battery was at 80% when it died
before I take back to samsung tomorrow any ideas?
I have plugged into wall charger= nothing
plugged into laptop=nothing and not detected
held power and volume up=nothing
held power and volume down=nothing
held power and volume up & home=nothing
no sounds or anything at all on screen
truly bricked?
Updates:
Hi Guys,
I applied the p1000nubjm2 firmware. I downloaded it from samfirmware. It's the latest P1000L firmware for America/Australia. It failed in the PDA file: P1000NUBJM2_P1000NUBJM2_P1000NUUBJM2_HOME.TAR . I was planning to apply the gingerbread update after that.
Now to the results, As you know, before, I was able to reach the download mode, the startup Galaxy Tab/Samsung screen, and the battery displays when connecting the cable. Now, after application of this lovely firmware and failure, nothing (literally "Nothing") takes place. The device became more dead than it was before . It doesn't display anything and it doesn't respond to power or displays the battery. It became a black $500 cost brick No matter how much time I keep it charging (or what "should be" charging), it would never startup again (sigh!) The ODIN and samsung kies no more recognize the device when connected to the computer.
Any additional clues before I decide to convert it to a teacup base?
Regards,
ARK

[Q] Can't boot into OS not matter how many times I flash it with Odin...

Hi all I own an international i9000 (Hong Kong version),
My little woe started like this, I was uninstalling RyanZA's OCLF, when I encountered an error where I couldnt uninstall the ext2 tools. I read somewhere on a fix for it, where I downloaded a app called Mount /system (rw / ro) in which i set the system to RW, and then I was able to uninstall ext2 tools.
Afterwards I tried to install the Voodoo lagfix via odin.
After that, it refused to boot to the load screen (Galaxy S logo) and stayed in the i9000 screen saying restore operation then the device reboots itself.
Out of desperation I reflash my phone with my phone's 2.2 firmware "I9000ZSJPE" but that didn't work either, the first time it boots when I flash the firmware, I get taken to recovery mode, and I get this message:
update media please wait
E:Can’t mount /dev/block/stl10
(invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:can’t mount DBDATA:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed
No matter how many times I flash the firmware, I keep getting this message...
Is there any way to get my phone up and running again?
Thanks!
Hey, dont panic, its no biggie... this happened to me last week, you need to find a firmware that contains 'dbdata' im unsure which ones do contain it... i know darkys 9.2 Odin version definately has it... thats the rom i used to fix my phone last week.
EDIT: found this.... this should work :
This one is easy to fix so don't panic.
Download this ROM and extract (Odin 1.7 and 512.pit are included), then do as follows:
-Start Odin and load 512.pit, don't connect the phone yet.
-Make sure "Re-Partition" is checked, don't change anything else.
-Load PDA.tar.md5 as PDA, MODEM.tar.md5 as PHONE and CSC.tar.md5 as CSC.
-Put your Phone on download mode and connect it, start flashing.
When flashing is done, the phone will enter recovery mode, if it get stuck at the same error, simply do a wipe/factory reset and reboot the phone, the phone shall boot normally then.

damn, this is why we NEED XDA forums and other members! I would have hyperventilated if this happened to me! good thing there is a solution posted here
It seems my earlier reply did not send through, but I'll say it again,
Thanks a lot!!! my SGS i9000 is up and running again!!!"
Hey no probs !!! glad to hear you got it fixed nothing worse than the feeling of your beloved precious phone dying infront of your eyes, and the sweat dripping down your forehead when you try mouth to jack input resuscitation.................. or is that just me ??
haha anyways hitting the thanks button would suffice

[Q] keep rebooting and no recovery mode

Purchased two Bell Canada Samsung Galaxy S as-is from local kijiji.
They all performing the same thing, rebooting at Galaxy S logo, GT-I9000M page, it won't go any further. and there is no recovery mode at start-up.
Here are the steps which I have played with for past two days.
1. Trying to get to recovery mode
- tried ADB, but it doesn't work, since "USB debug" is not on, and it won't accept as a device, and I am not able to turn that on, since I can't even get on the main screen.
- tried three key combo, vol up + home + power on, at least a hundred times for past two days, it doesn't work. fortunately download mode is working (at least I have more option to try). and I know how to get to recovery mode, I played with my friend's before.
2. Trying to use ODIN to flash the firmware
- unchecked "re-partition", unchecked "bootloader", pick 512 as PIT and then choose following as PDA
JH2, JK3, JK4, JL2
always successful on refresh, but phone still does the same, stuck at LOGO page
- also tried, checked "re-partition", and checked "bootloader", pick 512 as PIT and repacking following into PDA, Phone/Modem, CSC, still won't work...
JP series, JH, JK series, JL
At the beginning I though it was problem on CSC, I didn't use correct one to match my phone model #, but what's mine??? I can't go into my phone to check. I checked my friend's I9000, he used I9000BMCJK4, and I assume all JK series should work with me, since our IMEI are similar. And I tried many times on different cache.rft as CSC.tar, still no luck for me
I go crazy now, $400 USD gone. Seriously needing help. Any help is highly appreciated.
try the one jl2 download file and samsungfirmwares.com it flashes a special bootloader that may fix things.. it should be a single file you put in as pda nothing else..
if not they may have permantely trashed internal memory and you are sol.

I have tried one of JL2 file from somewhere (don't remember where), but I will get one JL2 file from samsungfirmwares.com again, see if that works.
Do you mean, only choose the file for PDA, left PIT empty, and get everything uncheck?
permantely trashed internal memory? are these the common problem with this model? I got two of these, and both of them have the same issue, I think, there should be a way to slove it, right? Should I give up these thoughts???
anyways, thanks anyways, I will report back after I flesh JL2 from samsungfirmwares.com
Ok, you need to flash jl2 with pda, repartition, pit file and the secondary boot loader... The SBL(secondary boot loader) is what will actually fix your phone
Hopefully it will work.

is "<ID:0/005> Sbl.bin" secondary boot loader???
I got the file for PDA, I9000UGJL2, is this the one? if not, where should I get it? how do I update it?
I did it again, with "re-partition" checked, PIT choosed as s1_odin_20100512.pit, I9000UGJL2_homebinary_add_param.tar (which I just downloaded from samfirmware.com), it still doesn't work.
anything else I can try? maybe something simple I didn't do???
I too am a bell user I had the same problem a few weeks back. This is going to sound messed up, but i'm going to do my best to explain how I solved the problem.
DO NOT MULTI-TASK ON THE COMPUTER WHILE DOING THIS. CLOSE ALL OTHER APPLICATIONS.
-remove external sd and sim card
-go into download mode (hold vol down+power+home).
-turn on ODIN
-plug in usb (both computer and phone)
-check re-partition
-ONLY use the 512 pit file. DO NOT use a rom.
-start ODIN and it should only take a minute. this will wipe your device completely but still allow you to access download mode.
- remove usb close ODIN
- start up ODIN again and connect usb
- use 512 pit and JP1 or JP2 rom.
- After flashing, this SHOULD give you an error and send you straight into recovery mode. you're looking for a specific error code. you need the error to have "sl01" or "sl10" (whichever, i forgot which it was) at the end of the path. if the end of the path has "m(something)" then use a different rom till you get the "sl10".
these errors are internal sd errors which your phone is experiencing right now, but the phone is fixable from the "sl10" error.
continuing...
- once you get the "sl10" error, close ODIN, unplug USB, turn off phone.
- go back into download mode.
- boot up ODIN with 512 pit and ULG2 rom.
- plug in phone
- start flashing.
this can give you two outcomes:
1) fixed galaxy S
2) error code with "m(something)" at the end of the error path.
if it's #2 do this all over again until it works.
This took me 3 days to figure out these steps, 10 hours each day. although it doesnt seem to make sense, my phone is working right now and it is where I am writing all this from. My only explanation is that Bell gets ****ty product from samsung. it's almost impossible to flash custom roms on a bell galaxy i9000 because the internal SD seems to have trouble being mounted.
i hope this helps and i hope it doesnt take long for you to fix this problem.
btw, if it does get fixed data connection wont be available. to enable it go to your apn settings. create new named "Bell" with apn as "pda.bell.ca" and leave all other options blank. data should be restored after that.

great!!! Another option I can try. Thank you.
I will try it out right after my work. so the idea behind this, is bricking it into recovery mode and S10 error code. and then fresh right back with correct ULG2 (is this correct? frist time heard about this rom)
anyways, I will post back with result.
Where can i find this ULG2 rom?
did it work?

yes, lucky I got one of my Bell Samsung phone work. Since I done a million times of refreshing and rebooting and etc... I am not sure what I did, now I still trying to remember last 10 steps I did to make this work.
But definitely, I could not have done this repair without jt_kyle. Thank you so much, jt_kyle.
jt_kyle, Thank you!!!
but none of JP1 or JP2 is givining me the error "tl10", I tried
I9000DXJP1
I9000TGYZSJP2
I9000XXJP1
I9000XXJP2
it come out error started with "m..."
I just keep refreshing each on PDA 3 to 4 times, and choose with re-partition or without. At the end I try a few another ROMs as well, I still get no "tl10", but somehow, just that magicical moment, the screen come out a set of commands that look like format sd card, so I got excited, fresh it with JL2. It is back to work.
still no clue the steps of fixing the problem.
one done, the another one to go.
any more ideas please, and I think I am really close to solve this one now.
Thank you All

if you have a way for me to give you this file i do have it just not sure how to do so because its 286MB
Could it be dead?
Since you have one of the infamous i9000m's it might also just be a dead SD card? You might try calling samsung and trying to get it repaired under warrenty as they are all under a year old (try and flash jl2 first even it will not boot up). It sounds like no receipt may not be an issue.
Lots of info from allgamer's list of i9000m issues in the general section.
At least you have one in the meantime!
same problem
Hey ive got pretty much the same problem that you had. Only differences are that I'm from Australia and am on Virgin network.
My phone became semi bricked one day when it restarted and since the 3 button combinations did not work i ordered in a USB jig which i received today. I used odin 1.8 to try and flash to I9000BVJJPD which i got from samfirmware.com but it ended up stuck on the logo screen vibrating once in a while. I decided to repeat it with no avail and began to use other roms and use .PIT.
This is where my phone became even worse and is now in it's current position; rebooting at the GT-I9000 page. I tried the method that jt_kyle suggested, substituting australian roms instead but it is still in the same position.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or should i just try getting a warranty?
Look for the ugjl2 complette and repeat what I said

I think I have this I9000M_JL2_JL2_JL2_JL2_UG_BMC file, is the same file that you are talking about? JL2 Complete?
I tried this file many times, it won't work neither.
for past one hour I played around this phone, trying to repeat the steps I did for the first phone. Unfortunately, nothing is working for me AGAIN!
but I got these error page all the time, like following...
update media, please wait
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(I/O error)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:
I think that's bigest problem in my case, and for a lot of people in this forum. Do any people has a good solution for this???

I then decided to flash it using Odin but it got stuck almost at the end of the proccess. Now my battery is almost dead and the only thing on the screen is a flashing message. Firmware upgrade encounter an issue.

Which rom you were on before trying to flash? And what did you try to install?

I was on Android 4.0.3 the German realesed.
N7000XXLPY---------4.0.3---------2012 May
I downloaded it from the forum and it was working nicely. I just wanted to try a different rom. But I didn't get to do nothing just to clear the data which never ended and crash my phone..
Stuck after wiping user data, Odin hanging at the end..where exactly did it stop working?
I'd say that it's definitely superbricked.
you can do that:
- go on recovery (Try vol up + home + power)
- mount usb storage and put abyss kernel in a directory
- flash abysskernell4.00
- reboot recovery
- wipe data cache and dalvik
- power off
- power on
if it's stay on boot logo :
- power off
- vol down + home + power (download mode)
- flash your note with odin pc with this method
- dl mobil odin and flash ics open germany with this method
Noizy.
I will try that, but now i have to charged my battery to be able to do it.
When trying to flash the green bar on Odin gets almost to the end ot the proccess but then it just sits there and doesn't do anything...

This is what I have on Odin. It almost get to the end of the green bar.

Is your LPY Rom rooted? If yes, then how?
Did you flash CF-Root LPY kernel, or did you root it using Dr.Ketan's method?
This is a screen shot of the screen.
Yes it's rooted and I used Dr.Ketan's method..
I'm afraid you have a brick on your hands, mate. Take your Note to the
nearest service centre for MoBo replacement.
That I can't do. I bought from a third person... So I don't have any warranty... Let me ask you a question. The fact that I can get into recovery mode doesn't make a difference?

Not working... Don't know what to do
It's superbricked, for sure. All you can do is send it for repairs - motherboard replacement.

Hey dude, I had a similar case when I was upgrading my S2 officially because my USB was loose, I got the update 60% and came to a halt, my phone wasn't even rooted by then.
Here's what I did and here's what you can try:
1. root my phone (for your case, re-root your phone or even unroot then re-root it again, there may be some files damaged when your phone lost power).
2. install original kernel and Stock ROM (there might be original files which are needed from the original to make things work when you switch ROMs)
3. reboot and see if things are fine.
If you get back to running normal, then you can install whatever Custom ROMs you like.
Hope this help! Get back to me with the latest situation.
