GPS Question for ROM Devs - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please don't hate me for starting another GPS thread, but I'm dying to understand something. Every GPS problem thread has someone speak up and report that the GPS problems are fixed in most of the xda ROMs. So my questions to the ROM developers are...
At a high level, what did you do to solve the GPS issues? Did you rewrite or replace a buggy driver? Did you add code to make the driver smarter in dealing with flawed hardware? Do you feel the hardware is at fault? Did you just tweak some internal settings? Is it just because Froyo fixes it? Is it because fixing the lag solved the GPS issues?
Some people still insist that it's a hardware issue and no ROMs really fix the GPS. Some ROMs just make it tolerable. Do you agree with them? I don't think Samsung will ever admit it's a hardware problem because it would result in a multi dollar recall.
Thanks in advance.

There's a few software fixes that make it tolerable, but its not gonna as perfect as some other android phones or other phones in general. Its flat out a hardware problem. If it was software it would have been fixed by now
All of the fixes more or less use similiar methods to try and make it better, and sometimes it will probably seem almost perfect, sometimes it will flat out suck

good question.still wondering coz im still using the stock rom for 4months, >.<

[Q] Can the GPS issue be fixed in Firmware?

Hi,
the title actually says it all...
I'm planning on buying an Android phone in the next couple of weeks and the Galaxy S is my prime suspect. However, I don't want a GPS cripple since I plan on using the GPS a lot. The lagfix seems to be coming along nicely with lots of different implementations and Sammy also has plans to fix it, so I'm not worried about that, the GPS trouble on the other hand seems to be very hard to catch and might be hardware related. Has anyone found the cause for the strange behaviour yet? Are there hardware differences between the Galaxy S and the Epic 4G GPS (which apparently won't make it over the pond to Germany). And last and least, is there any real alternative to the Galaxy S coming out in the forseeable future? I'd go for the HTC Desire, but it's SOC just can't keep up with the Hummingbird performance, so it's not really an option...the Droid X is too well locked, so XDA Developers won't be able to provide such a wide vaiety of mods and updates (and that is the most important thing to me since all manufacturers seem to drop support for their "old" devices after about 6 months...)
Any information and advice is appreciated!
Thanks
GPS Problems are software related mate.
There is a "fix" under test, that uses Epic 4G files. Works quite nice, i got a lock at home, with 10meters.
Some people claim that the new OFFICIAL Sammy software JM1, improved the GPS as well, people started getting a Lock at home with 10-30meters.
So yeah.. it is Software related, nothing to worry about.
Thanks!
All the fixes I had read about so far were just augmenting the GPS with Wifi and 3G data to smooth things out and did not really fix the problem. I read about the Epic 4G firmware thingy but can't fin the thread anymore, I'll have to dig a bit deeper and see how things are going there. Let's hope it really is only software and not some defective chip or component interference...
Well.. Currently, actually, there is no proof either way. By the end of September, it is likely that if problems still remain, they are hardware flaws.
I personally believe the main problems are software.
I'm on JM5 with Epic4G "fix". Not much improvement I'm afraid. I get stationary locks, but none while moving. Also, while stationary I seem to "jump" around. Not very optimistic about the whole thing. But let's wait for that september fix and see then what is going on.

And the strange thing is, the problem is not permament.
I get almost always a lock in 20 sec with 5m accuracy.
But if you primarely want a gps device with an android "add on", why not look at the garmin gps android phones?
Well, I'm not looking for GPS with a phone, I'm looking for the best Android Phone with good GPS...
Only samsung knows the answer. But since there seems to be such a range in severity and after all this time samsung has still not provided a real fix it could very well be that its hardware related. Well find out in september.

The saddest thing is that Samsung still has not really commented on this. They claim that there is no GPS problem on the Epic 4G which should mean that they know about the issue, but they never said a word about the cause or possible solution or whether all they can do is augment the GPS to make it seem more accurate and smooth.
Maybe some GPS chips were faulty/dodgy and that is why not everybody has these problems...if Samsung would fess up and admit where the problem is we could all rest in peace instead of all in pieces...

They've said they are optimising the GPS though.. The reason why developers generally don't explain patches in detail, is because there is no easy way to explain it. If they said "the GPS chip required GPS packets to be processed more consistantly, and change blah blah blah in GPS stack", only techies would understand whats going on.
Easiest way to understand, will be to diff the SGS source code when new code is released...
Well, I'm not waiting for technical mumbo-jumbo from them, but I'd like to know whether there is a fix (e.g. new GPS driver or something) or whether we'll have to send in our devices for new hardware.
The "optimizing" is what worries me really, because to my ears that sounds like improving, not fixing. Improvements have been suggested on these forums already, most augment the GPS signal with Wifi or cell data which is fine but does not solve the problem at all. If Samsung is planning to "optimize" by activating skyhook or something then the device will remain a no-go for me, if they mean "fix" by optimizing and will put int he correct parameters or drivers or whatever to make GPS work then I'll be happy. The word optimizing is just extremely dodgy and does not sound promising at all...
UPDATE:
I just found this in a swiss forum...:
If you hold the SGS in your hand or have it in your pocket the GPS reception is really bad. If you hold it with your fingers without covering the back with your hand or put it in a pouch on the outside of your backpack it wors flawlessly. Apparently covering the GPS antenna in any way badly affects the GPS signal.
I have no idea whether this is reproducibly, but if any SGS owner here wants to give it a try please let me know whether you can support these findings.
I honestly never had(serious) issues with the GPS. I'm using JM5 With Ndrive 10, locks in 30 seconds it's a little inaccurate by a 20 or 15 meters, and very rarely loose fix.
but i think it is for covering the antenna.
I still take my N96 to my work only because it has Garmin.

[Q] Is there a fix for wi-fi dropout at -88dBM?

Hi All,
I'm wanting to know if there is a fix for the wi-fi dropping perfectly useable signals at -88dBM since HTC's Gingerbread update?
I am now S-OFF and rooted, and have recently installed Android Revolution HD as my ROM, as this promised 'improved wi-fi drivers', but this sadly hasn't included a fix for this issue.
I would've thought this would be top of the list for developers as there have been many complaints by users since 'upgrading' from Froyo.
Any advice would be appreciated...
Many thanks.
Anyone? This is a major issue for me.
i think its an issue with all gingerbread roms, maybe you could try turning "best wifi performance" on.
i thought maybe it was working for me as i think it dropped less, it does use considerably more battery though.

That's the main reason I have S-OFFed my phone, and since then I have tried a lot of updates ( Roms, Kernels, Radios...), without any luck so far.
Returning to Froyo may be our best bet but I do not know if it is feasible yet.
Yes, I thought this would've been a quick fix for the developers.
If I can downgrade to Froyo, I will do so in an instant!
Did anyone find a workaround for the wifi issue ? I am quite surprised that there aren't more people complaining about it...
+1
And when ever anyone asks about it, there is deadly silence. I would have thought that some of the excelent devs on here would at least have some opinions to share on possible ways forward or not ?

[Q] question about rooting my nexus one

OK.guys I have a stock n1 running 2.3.6 but I am tired of the wifi issue my question is if I root does this fix the issue and also what are the benefits of rooting and which is the best method and rom
Thanks in advance
Can't answer for certainty because we don't know if your problem is software or hardware related.

my wifi keep on droping off when i google it i see its a problem with the n1
hope this helps
I haven't run stock since Froyo came out, but I haven't had any issues with my wifi, so if it is an issue with software, it doesn't seem like it exists in CyanogenMod. But as baseballfanz mentioned, it is too difficult to determine whether your issue is hardware or software. If it is software, it should be fixed. The two most popular custom ROMs are CyanogenMod and MIUI. I know CyanogenMod covers a lot of the additional features on their website, I am not sure about MIUI, but both probably include better perfomance and battery life, along with a ton of extra features.
Never had any WiFi issues myself or heard of anyone else having any with the N1. I suppose you could TRY another rom but I'm not sure if that would work. If you do I would recommend a cyanogenmod simply because theres so many people using that if anyone else has had this issue its probably been reported and solved if it was a software problem. Always worth a hot and if nothing else theres more to do with a rooted phone anyway.
Good luck, hope you'll let us know how you get on.

[Q] Might CyanogenMod damage the Wi-Fi Module?

Hello everybody,
I'm not sure if this is the right section which i'm posting in, but as i couldn't find a more suitable place I'll ask my question here.
2 Weeks ago i acquired a Samsung GT-I9301I Phone, i'm completely new to Android as my Company phone is a BlackBerry. The Phone itself seems really good but the whole Software Bundle (Bloat-Ware) that come with Samsung Devices were pretty annoying. So i started some research on the Internet concerning Custom ROM's and found a Thread here with CyanogenMod 11 suitable for my Device. So i flashed it onto my Phone, and i'm quite impressed of the work @Rox has done.
Yesterday i had a conversation with a Friend of mine in Germany who works for Samsung Mobile, especially the Cellphone Repair Section. I told him what I've done. And he told me that sooner or later my Wi-Fi Module will stop working because the CyanogenMod will Damage/Destroy it. He told me that they receive lots of Devices with this problem and that it is definitely a problem caused by that Mod.
ACTUAL QUESTION:
Has anyone encountered such problems or heard of it before? Would be nice to collect information on this, if it's really caused by the CyanogenMod. And if, then maybe we together can relay the information we gather to the CyanogenMod Team for further discussion and problem solving...
Thx ahead, Steve
Whelp, I've used CM on my old HTC Sensation for years, never encountered any problem with the modules for sure :/
Is your buddy really serious? Because I haven't heard about a device damaged by that
Hi,
indeed he's serious he won't make jokes on that.
Before me posting here and opening this thread I've also done intensive search on the internet, but i couldn't find anything concerning the mentioned problem.
So the question now is: WTH did screwed those devices he's talking about. And if you're saying that you also never heard of something like that and you're using CM yourself for several years, then it brings me to only one answer.
Rookies with no experience are flashing their devices and that maybe because of missing knowledge/understanding something gone wrong during their attempt's to flash the Custom ROM's...?!?
Sent from my GT-I9301I using XDA Free mobile app
WiFi Modules need to be compiled with kernel.
If those aren't flashed after flashing a mod or custom kernel, WiFi won't work.
If a rookie won't flash kernel modules then it's his mistake.
Hi..
That's maybe really the reason. I'm using CM since 3 day's now and haven't encountered any Wi-Fi problems except a maybe weaker signal strength.
OK 3 day's isn't that long so I'll keep my eyes and ears open, and will follow this "Rumor". As anything happens I'll report it here.
Everyone a Merry Xmas!

I don't believe you'll encounter any problems, it's just important to flash the right files, is all
And no, signal is not weaker, AOSP has different parameters for measuring signal strength, and I believe it's more accurate than manufacturers ROMs (saw this info somewhere on the forum, don't remember where)
And merry Christmas you good XDA user
How can software physically damage hardware? The only way I can think of actually damaging the wifi module is if the phone is dropped, gotten wet, or run so much that heat fries.
I'm thinking the same concerning the Overstress / Overheating otherwise no idea. Working in IT business myself and that's the only reasonable explanation for Hardware damage.
The other question is if it's software related than it's only possible as mentioned before, that the module driver isn't correctly compiled / implemented into the kernel. And therefore the module just isn't working instead of destroyed.
As those devices aren't being repaired by my friend cause of void warranty, it's still an open question if the modules Hardware damaged or just aren't working...
Sent from my GT-I9301I using XDA Free mobile app
Well, unless your friend is completely a idiot (no offense...) software can't do harm to hardware...Overheating may cause real issue but in reality I have owned dozen of devices from old HD2 to new Z3, all run custom ROM but never encounter single hardware error, only some minor button damage....

[Q] Help finding a suitable rom?

I know I may be breaking a rule here and if so feel free to slap my hand, but I've been through the forum and have not been able to find the answer to my questions. I'm currently using NoSense Beta 1.04 with pattyboi's 3.4.43 kernel, and I've never been able to get the Playstore to stay operational ( if I need to use it I have to clear cache) and just recently, after really needing it for a class assignment, I found that my front facing camera locks up my camera completely. Looking for something lite, don't really care for Sense yet it is cool, and something that fixes the Playstore and front facing camera. Oh, and video playback must work too. Haven't had any problems there but have with previous phones. Again, sorry for breaking any rules and asking dumb questions, just needing to get this flashed to a stable rom that addresses these issues; if one exist. Thanks.

I think you should check out all the ROMs and kernels available and see what you like best.
