[Q] Installing a theme - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey. I have my SGS I9000 for some days now, and I wanna put a theme in it, so it looks nice. I've downloaded a theme, and I have no idea what to do right now. I searched for like 300 hours, but there are a thousands of tutorials and I don't know which one I should use. Can someone help me or give me a guide which shows how I can install a theme? I have SGS I9000, build 2.2
I am sure a lot of people asked this, but I just can't find the right guide.
Thanks.

First you need to root your fone then download clockwork recoverymod from the market then flash a custom rom then apply your theme or you could just root it, install clockwork then visit the rom kitchen and build your own rom and also pick your own theme. Make sure that your 3 button recovery works first!

How can i root my phone?

Read the stickies. Take an hour out of your life to read instead of posting questions that are solved by a quick search. Invest a little bit of yourself. 300 hours? More like 300 seconds
Sent from the future, a long, long time ago.

But i don't know which one i should use.

Read the stickies understand what you are doing first read the themes in themes section .
Or just be another numbty rushing to brick their phone .
jje

You need to install a custom rom before you can install a theme. Once you get the custom rom, usually each theme has instructions on how to install. Most of them just involve using ClockworkMod which may or may not be included in the custom rom. Once you ge CWM you just have to follow the instructions made by poster.
Also make sure that you can get it in to download mode or otherwise you'll have to go through extra trouble or you may have a brick. Darkyy's rom is an amazing rom so i would suggest going to get his rom first. Follow his guides and once your done that you can get whatever theme you want after that.
Good luck

Kk, ill try. Thanks

Flashing SuperBad?

Right now I'm running Cyanogen's 5.0.8 ROM. When flashing to SuperBad CM5 V.1.7 (which is based on CM 5.0.8) do I still need to wipe? If so do I wipe data/factory settings, battery stats, delvik, ext.? I have a theme called Slide Blue (which is made for 5.0.8), will that work as well or is there even a need for it? And finally when I go to Android Spin to look at this ROM to download, it only gives me one link to download, so does that ROM also contain Google Apps? I have only flashed one ROM and Im still a noob in the learning process.

best road to take - do a nandroid backup and then try it without a wipe
sometimes trial and error is the best way to find these things out
and next time, please post questions in the questions and answers section
Thanks for replying. I did a nandroid backup and wiped. Flashed SuperBad and all is well! I'm finding out that the best way to learn is to try. Also I did post this same question in Q&A and I recieved little to none feedback. That's why I tried it here to. All in all, thanks to you and everyone else that is willing to help us noobs out. We all started from scratch at some point.

GB Bootloaders

are the bootloaders the same for captivate and for i9000?
or are there any mods done on the i9000 bootloaders so they would match a captivate device?
I believe so. I have a captivate but I am running continuum 5.5 which is a i9000 ROM. Everything is working great for me so far. If you are asking cause you want to flash a ROM....just follow whichever ROM you choose directions very carefully and to the T. Otherwise you could wind up with some serious problems.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
i want to use those BL on a rom im working on i just want to make sure they both work on captivate and on i9000 without the need of any changes and if changes are needed then where.
That unfortunately I don't know. I'm a Lurker more then a Dev. Just trying to learn as I go. U might wanna drop in to one of the ROM threads and pm the Dev of that ROM to ask them. I'm sure they'd be willing to help or at least point u in the right direction. Try the Continuum 5.5 thread. Cezar is awesome with his work.

there is no reason to include bootloaders in a rom ... that could lead to many bricks due to bad cwm flashes especially if both are in there, if it is a gingerbread rom have people flash the bootloaders and kernel in odin and then flash the rom.
There aren't any changes done to them though ... They are the exact same as the I9000. The only thing that gets tweaked from device to device is the kernel.
thanks for the answer,i asked coz i like to make a tar file thats flashes the.bl with the rom to save people time.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well then, if it's in a .tar that changes my first paragraph, that should be fine, the betas for continuum 5 were just one .tar with everything, bootloaders included, that's actually how I first made the leap.
Just it sounds like a bad idea to me to put them in cwm zips.
In the first place, it is not a good idea at all to incorporate bootloaders in a rom zip to flash... It would just lead to many more bricks and many unhappy people . Besides, flashing the bootloaders through odin is super simple and much more reliable

Did you not see any of the posts in the thread? I said the exact same thing you just did
And he isn't making a cwm zip he's making an odin flashable .tar with everything included.

Need ROM recommendation

Hi all. I'm a long time WM user, but a complete Android noob. My gf just got a Vibrant, and I was able to root and unlock it. I deleted some of the bloat that came along with it.
I'm going to get a Captivate very soon (it's stock ATT). I know the phones are almost identical, but I would like to get a stripped rom. Think Da_G's Fuze and Jacko's Rhodium.
What would be a good rom for me to start with? With WM, you would just flash a rom and be done, but with Android, I notice there are both roms and kernels. Which would I need? And what order do I flash them in?
Thanks in advance for any help and info.
a. this is the dev section, meant for posting roms/kernels and not for asking simple questions
b. a rom always comes with a custom kernel
c. since there's dozens of roms you're going to have to look at its features/themes and decide which one suits you best.
Need to learn where to post properly.
Sorry - can a mod please move this to the general section. But thanks for the info regarding roms/kernels.
Start with Cyanogen first.

dont post here blah blah...
read the rules first blah blah...
Id go with a Froyo ROM first, i went with Mikeymike's Serendipity 6.4 for me first, super easy to do it and much less can go wrong. never soft bricked my phone on a froyo ROM.
then when i went to gingerbread i went with Mikymike's Serendipity VII, soft bricked it 3 or 4 times. i recommend getting a JIG or making ur own JIG before doing a gingerbread ROM.
First rom, avoid gb roms. Do not mess with boot loaders until you understand your phone. Froyo roms, cm7, miui

+1 best advice of them all , personally im biased .. (read my sig )
although I disagree , cm7 and miui is not somethign for starters .. read the Cyanogen OP it clearly states its not a rom to start with ..
for the rest .. best advice is to try them all and se what works best for YOU.
You are correct about cm7 and miui, and you make great roms
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Although CM7 and MIUI are great Roms.. Go with Serendipity. Start with Froyo then go to the Gingerbread version.
Personally, it's the most stable and has never done me wrong.. But then again it's all up to the user.

[Q]Dualboot Android

I love so much AOSP Roms for our Galaxy S I9000..I have done a nandroid back-up of Galnet MIUI v4 and Cyanogenmod 7..so if i want one of two roms i have to format system/data/cache/datadata from recovery and then restore the back-up..
My question is if is there a way to manage to do a dualboot between this two (or others) Roms..??
I think if it is possible it will be a great develoment for our Galaxy S..
Maybe i'm sayng a stupid thing but i want to read your opinions about this..
Cheers
i dont think its stupid at all, this would be a great feature! I have seen this in other android devices!
I've always wondered this too.
This was done on my previous device (HTC Hero) but it was a bit of a pain. The second Rom was installed on SDcard which was slow, and was FCing constantly, etc.
Whoever's interested can have a look at the HTC Hero forum section. It was ported by Kendon (he was part of VillainROM back then, don't know now).
Hope some developpers can do this ..
If it was possible on Htc Hero with less memory and less power it could be done also on Galaxy S I9000..
But Htc Hero is Htc and Galaxy S is Samsung so..i don't know..
I'm sure this week in dev I saw a trial program to do just this, running up to 4 roms! Will hunt down link if I can! Brb

Hi there,
Dual booting is kinda possible.
First one is to have very slims roms so you can install both on the nand and select one using a modded recovery.
Second one is to use redbend_ua script that will backup the current running rom, and then install another one and run it. The operation takes between 5 to 10 min depending on the rom and thats the only possibility to switch from 2.2.1 to 2.3 and vice-verca without having to flash bootloaders as redbend can flash bootloaders.
Also using redbend can be tricky as it can dump and write on partition but if it fail at flashing bootloaders you will be bricked.
Bricked phones can still be recovered using j-tag or 301k resitor.
Here is an attempt by z4ziggy:
http://z4ziggy.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/rom-flashing-using-redbend_ua/
The script in this page does not work but it can be improved.
You should check with him and some good dev like supercurio or codeworkx.
Also before applying any scripts, post it here and ask other people to see if it seems correct.
Happy flashing.
quick edit:
Be sure to dump the whole rom and restore the whole image even empty bml as it may have an importance.
We have to ask to developpers..
Not really, try to make a script that dump some bml, then try to restore them is it works then your good to go further.
Finally when you have a working script use tegrak kernel sources to include a "boot selection" as he did.
(on tegrak at phone boot you can enter recovery using the "home" button, change that to run the script so if you wait it boots normally, if you push "home" it dump the current rom and restore another one to boot on it)
Editing again:
If you use 2.2.1 bootloaders only, you can symlink an rom.img at boot and boot on it, it is easier but it is also pretty slow. (see nexus S rom port by supercurio)

It's been SEVEN (7) MONTHS. I'm a noob. Help!

Guys, I am really now bored with my LG Optimus Black. It's now been SEVEN (7) MONTHS since I stayed on Stock Rom. I never tried and was afraid of trying to flash or change Roms. The only thing I did was to change launchers.
Now I'm really bored and I have now the courage to do this stuff but unfortunately, I'm a noob. I HOPE someone here could direct me or give me a step by step process on how to change make my OB look like a WP7 phone or an official ICS phone? Please? I like the interface of the WP7 in sms and it's font. But the launcher itself is really a battery eater.

If you want it to look like WinMo, simply go to Market and choose one of the lots of different Windows Mobile-like Launchers.

im guessing you dont want to just theme your phone any longer.... i was the same with you up till abt a month ago and was also pretty confused but figured it out with help from the good good people in here =)
im just gonna put it in step by step
any detailed explanation and links to stuff can be found in Nooby's How To Thread so get your tools there
1) root your phone, most common ways are super one click or blackjack (blackjack only for froyo phones)
2) if not installed ald (with the root) install CWM and superuser
3) once rooted (and have CWM & Su), download rom of choice and place rom's zip file in sd card root and install rom of choice through CWM (check if the rom youre installing requires you to wipe all cache ie davik etc or factory reset, and follow accordingly)
4) once you do that done go through the OB Themes & Apps Forum and look for a compatible theme to the rom youve earlier installed
5) dl the theme of choice, place it in your sdcard root and flash via CWM
6) once flashed make another backup (what i do is take out the first backup file and store it on my computer *do not rename it, take the whole 'TitaniumBackup' folder* although not neccesary i do it anyway cos it makes it easier for me to identify which file i wanna restore from)
7) enjoy your phone
hope this helps.........

Thanks for the guide ! i was reading the "Nooby's How To Thread" but still had some doubts.
I want to install "Zeus v4.02b".
So, if i understood well:
1) root my phone depending on the version i have, since i have stock rom, Blackjack should work.
2)install CWM (as said in the "Nooby's How To Thread"), and just follow the guide to flash a new rom.
3)Do another backup
4) DONE !
misc:
Zeus rom already have a custom kernel included right ? so i don't need to worry about that?

Yup as stated in the Zeus thread, only install the alternative kernel if you have problems with the in built one, and one last minor thing, I don't think there are themes for the v4 variant yet, and have you read up on the Zeus thread? Best to see what are the minor bugs of v4 and how to troubleshoot them first....

i didn't knew that about themes.. but that's not a problem for me.
The only bug that i saw that will bother me is the LG notifications...
Do you recommend other rom ? I was going for nova, but it seems old and outdated (2.2). So i read this, and opted for zeus.
I won't recommend one over the other man, each rom has its own pros and cons, and I don't think its nice to do that
Just try flashing one first, then when you get the actual feel of doing it, you'll be more confident about trying different roms and figuring out which suits you best
To a point its kinda addictive to me now lol... cos with every successful flash, feels like I'm getting a new phone....
Oh and the notification bug is not all bad, I still get my notifications good enough

Well said dude! I really appreciate what you did and for the help. I'll do that as soon as I am not busy. It's hard to do these stuff if it conflicts with your work. Anyway, thanks again for a much shorter and briefer way of the steps.
Off topic:
I've been asking help previously from some people here but unfortunately, I did not got any replies. Hope some of you here could help.
I was requesting to mod the Go Sms Pro application to look like our stock messaging. I tried to do it, but failed. I only wanted to change the Go Sms Pro icon same with our stock icon and change the name of it as Messaging.
I love the interface and the ability to customize with the Go Sms Pro but I dislike the icon. Can anyone here do it? Please.

K the way I do it is this, install a home launcher that supports icon changes and change the icon through there, I'm using go sms also and my icon is a bird I made myself hee try to look for my screenshots in the screenshots thread hee
I didn't do much actually man, just parroting what the ppl here have taught me, just don't forget to do the same for newer noobs that turn up over time hee...
One thing I appreciate after reading other forums on XDA boards is the lack of flamers in our OB forums
I'm using adw you can change it without using 3rd party launchers but I believe it includes modifying framework stuff and that is something which is way above my head..... for now.....

I alreaduly tried that. But I wanted to keep the stock launcher. The only thing I hated is that the messaging threads are white. It's somewhat not pleasant in the eye. Unlike Samsung's default messaging, the background is black.

There are different "wipes" it means formatting a partition, to be short.
You need to make a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, go to advanced, do a dalvik wipe, and a battery stats is always good, if you install a new ROM. You can read all this in my NOOB guide, if you want to

BTW, if you're going for the Zeus ROM, flash v3.1/2n. It's much more stable than v4. (Unless you REALLY need the GPS fix). Huexxx is working on the issues so just wait
Also, Marvel 2.1 is another good ROM. I say flash all try all
Imho v3n is perfect for me.... gps lock within 20sec max, battery averaging 20 hours moderate use with 3g always on and overall smoothness and dependibility and yeah Gabwerks theme hee now it feels like I cannot look at my phone w/o his ics port and I cannot live w/o Huexx v3 hee

3N should be the best choice for you, since it is the european version. There isnt really a big difference, between v20n or v20b. The main difference is the language support and 3N surely also supports Porugues, but idk about 3b, but it think it also does. You can also try both versions here and stick with the best one for you. As long as Huexxx didnt fix the SoDs, I wouldnt flash a higher version, unless you really know, what you are doing and what you can/should do in case something doesnt work/crashes/gets stuck, and so on... But I guess it wont take too long, till he has figured out, what is going wrong/where the bug is. And meanwhile, you can try all the different ROMs we already have And maybe when you tested all of them for a couple of days, we might already have LEZO/MIUI/a new Zeus/new Marvel/new Noa/maybe an ICS port/stable CM/... so as you can see, you will have/be able to test a lot
