Hello ^^.
Well, my Atrix arrived yesterday and I noticed the GPS took too long to get a lock.
Also I tested it outside and couldn't get a lock with NDrive and with Google Maps it gave me a 900 meters accuracy.
So I remembered the gps.conf file under system/etc
Here's a copy paste of the original one:
Code:
SUPL_HOST=h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gppnetwork.org
SUPL_PORT=7275
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
"h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gppnetwork.org" is the AT&T A-GPS server. It only works with AT&T. I remember this from my Captivate days, hacking jupiter.xml.
So I changed it to:
Code:
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
Then we have the ntp server. File is configured to North America, wich doesn't apply to me because I'm in Argentina. I changed mine to South America as follows:
Code:
NTP_SERVER=south-america.pool.ntp.org
So here's the final result:
Code:
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
NTP_SERVER=south-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
If you're not in South America, you can search for your respective ntp server HERE.
Now my gps is working perfectly.
gracias che, i will test this (Venezuela) and see how it goes
Thanks man! did not even know that was the problem... will see if it works better now.
Though I have to say, editing with vi on the phone is a bit of a ***** Need to remount the /system partition to edit this file, btw.

I used Root Explorer to edit the file. Worked like a charm.
Anyone try using the random server that ntp.org offers? As someone who travels frequently I don't want to have to change this every time.
there is an app named FasterFix on market i used before and works pretty nice
Edit:
off topic but just to not open a brand new thread, im wondering if the atrix come with any sdcard what capacity and class? thanks

My Atrix came w/o an SD card. Bought a class 4 16GB one. That gives me a total of 28GB for media (the remainder is for apps and system, fixed). I find 16GB has the better price point, 32GB is more than twice as expensive.
Note: there is a directory /mnt/sdcard/ that refers to the internal storage. If you pop in an actual miniSD card, it is mounted under /mnt/sdcard-ext/
Hey, i tried this, after it was kinda slow to find gps outdoors. I still dont get any real gps lock indoors, which is rather disappointing since my almsot 3 years old nokia 6220 classic, found them immediately being in the same spot =/

Hehe welcome fellow Atrix owner in Singapore... thought I was the only one
anyways using ntp.org's asia server, works for me.
I'm recieving the Atrix here in Argentina next week as well. How did u unlock it? With cellunlock.net? Didn't you have any WiFi problems?
BTW thanks for the GPS hack. I'll do it as soon as i get mine (after rooting it).

I bought mine unlocked.
I heard lots of people unlocked theirs with cellunlock.
I don't have any bugs, besides the multitouch one.
I've got mine last week.
Unlocked with cellunlock with no problem. The only weird stuff is that they sent me a set of 3 numbers. I've unlocked the phone with the first number, no idea what's the other 2 numbers for.
I've got no problem with the GPS it locks pretty fast in outdoors.
But I have the annoying notification bug, the whole motoblur mail client works pretty bad, at least with exchange.
I'm not sure if the WiFi bug is happening to me, but I don't know how to test for it either.
Another thing I've noticed is that I have very low signal in HSDPA and it swtichs to EDGE a lot... dunno if it is a configuration issue or a carrier problem.

Hi there, I just got a brazilian SGS the I9000B (the one with the tv receptor), and was wondering if anyone was able to root this thing.
Mine is the : GT-I9000B model, firmware version 2.1-update1, base band version I9000BVJJG7, kkernel version 2.6.29 latin.umtssamsung #2, and compilation number ECLAIR.VJJG9.
Since i live in Brazil i cant seem to get acces to paid apps in the market or to google navigation out of the box, it seems i would have to root, or get super user privileges, to do those things (sorry, i'm a complete newb at this stuff)
If anyone could help me, i would relly appreciate it,
sorry for the bad english
Could you check the phone model number in the settings -> about phone -> Model number!
I will update my update.zip to work with your phone!
Can you dump your firmware? I really want the pt-br Swype.
Use my tutorial!
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
And use the update.zip in this post! please let me know if it works!
BackfireNL - i tried your method, it didnt work, it gave me the E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 7)
My model is the GT-I9000B
Thanks for the help
laggedHero - how do i dump my firmware?
Well seems it's root protected!
That's a pitty... is there anything I can do in order to root unprotect my phone?
Is there any way of me accessing the market for paid apps/google navigation?
Thanks for the help!

I'm afraid all that requires root. Could you possibly find a brazilian forum with more info on the specific model?
There do not seem to be many people with that model here.
@straus91 can you go to the dial pad screen and type
*#*#1234#*#*
then let us know the result
also if possible take a picture behind the phone without the battery to see what is the actual version code I9000B or GT-I9000B or whatever it might be

Olá amigo!
I live in Brazil also, but I have the I9000 Euro model.
Your phone seems kinda different!
It says it was produced here in Brazil.
And a 1000mA battery? Shouldn't it be 1500mA?
And we don't have many info on those phones in national forums... The model is too new, not many people have it.
Another info for you: I have already rooted my phone, but Google Navigation wont work for us... I guess the problem is on the maps themselves... Google Maps has to know where you are in order to give you navigation, you can't fool this by rooting your phone like we do for the market apps.
Keep more data coming!
I'm also interested to know more about the I9000B.
A propósito, onde vc comprou? Qual operadora?

Prezados,
It was a good idea to put that tv. But the one-seg resolution would make me fell kinda bad. And not to say that brazilian tv sucks. I think that's what they call 'envy'.
I'll be following this thead closely, and I hope to help. Good luck on the rooting.

Stock Google Navigation won't work in Brazil, you have to use the brut modified version of Google Navigation (you can find the brut maps here in xda)... with the brut mod you can use navigation in any place that has google maps coverage, that is, virtually anywhere in the world...
I used google navigation just some hours ago to find an address in a neighbor city, worked great... of course, we all know that the GPS in the SGS isn't all that great, but if you're patient with the GPS lags and are willing to make some wrong turns you'll eventually end up reaching your destination
My SGS is the international one, I bought in Mercado Livre for half the price of a iPhone 4 (wich always leaves me happy to remind of), I'm running on JPC (Froyo) with Doc's RomMod v2 and LagFix, this is definitely the best device you can have

Hello.
I have a 1006 Captivate, and can't make the gps to work anymore.
I remember I had usable GPS with Axura and JI6, but now I can't get a lock anymore, not even with JI6 (tested it with espyel's rom and Geomod).
So I want to know if anyone with a 1006 Captivate managed to make his gps work fine. I'd like to know the rom and the configuration used.
Thanks in advance.

I'm using latest Super Nova. I can't get good GPS with any rom.
EDIT: Just got a lock in my house. 15/10 meter accuracy.
I'll have to test it tomorrow while driving.
EDIT 2: It took 2 minutes to get a lock with Ndrive. And it lost the lock in a few seconds.
My next phone will not be a Samsung.

As far as what works best, the 2.2.1 roms provide the best results. I would play the refurb game if I were you until you get one you can live with.

it is kind of funny, you have post 160+ and do not know build number.
I'm seeing tons of GB GPS fixes for the vibrant even though most will not work.
I saw GPS files for the bell and virgin vibrant posted here and files for the
telus Fascinate 3G+. These files will not work because the vibrant carries a different hardware radio.
The T-mobile US Vibrant is a special variant as our phone is the only galaxy s device (other than the SGS4G) that has the 850,1700,1900,2100 bands, all other galaxy s variants have 850,900,1900,2100mhz bands. Our vibrant requires 1700 3g because thats what tmobile US uses for 3G, because of this difference we need a different hardware radio, That's also why we cannot use i9000 modems on the vibrant for tmobile US The bell and vibrant are just rebranded GT-i9000's and the Telus Fascinate 3G+ looks like a vibrant but may even be more similar to a captivate because of the hardware radio. Even though they may have the same styling or name it does not work because of the hardware radio.
The Captivate has a near identical (FM Radio is not present) hardware radio that allows it to use i9000 Modems and GPS files, same with the telus fascinate.
The vibrant and the SGS4G have different hardware radios to support 21mb/s HSPA+. These two hardware radios are similar enough to allow GPS to work but remain modems non-functioning. Romans GPS fix worked but had long lock times and poorly working compass.
Heathens Gingerbread gps fixed worked on the vibrant on 2.2 very well but fails on 2.3. What I think is the vibrant may have hardware similar enough to allow some files to work on one version of android but maybe completely useless on another version of android.
Just so you guys know,
Bell and virgins vibrants ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
Telus fascinates LOOK LIKE but ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
International galaxy s vibrants ARE Bell and Virgin Vibrants
Rodgers captivates ARE IDENTICAL to at&t captivates
The i9000 galaxy s and the bell and virgin vibrants HAVE NEAR IDENTICAL RADIOS to the rodgers and at&t captivates
Tmobile US SGS4G's are SIMILAR to the Tmobile US Vibrant
Subway IS NOT Quizno's
McDonald's IS NOT Burger king
Got it? okay good.

I can could not see any fix is really working.

You're going to have to explain why the cell radio affects the GPS. There's a different antenna and GPS is not controlled by the radio firmware.

What I believe is that GPS hardware is some way tied to the cell radio. Like maybe the i9000 GPS is not compatible with the vibrants cell hardware.

My guess is because we using different radio we cannot just port a working GPS modem from other carrier to our vibrant.

Just one tip philliple...when trying to sound like you know something never use the term "what I believe is". Don't get me wrong I am guilty of it also. Instead you might say "correct me if I'm wrong but..." Gives your statement an air of confidence and knowledge yet gives you an out if in fact what you said is incorrect. And I do know how old you are, we all do so respect there.
That said you are correct the GPS does require data in our case cellular data. While we can use the gps without cell data, on a wifi connection for instance, because the GPS is on a phone the code for the drivers would be written to connect to cell service. Therefore GPS files, such as drivers (some files that don't require code to the network will work, such as GPS conf.), can not just be pulled from any phone. This is why the files pulled from the Vibrant 4G work and the ones from Captivate do not.
Here is a link to a little light reading for anyone that wants to learn more about the GPS on their phone...http://stackoverflow.com/questions/33637/how-does-gps-in-a-mobile-phone-work-exactly Pay close attention to the AGPS section. This is what our phone uses. Never-mind the fact that whats written in the link was posted a couple of years ago because it is still the same priciples.

Not being rude but all you did is give a long winded "our phone is unique" statement, something that anyone who has looked at this forum since getting a vibrant would realize...
Not really sticky material. Nice info though. Maybe talk the the author if the vibrant bible and you can get a link in his thread for info.... Still doubtful.
Btw, the current v1.5 gps fix from strictlyrude for the cm7 variants seems to work great for me outdoors.

I don't believe this is correct. Our phones have GPS hardware are capable of independent GPS, that is GPS without data assistance for a lock. It takes quite a bit longer without AGPS, but it is entirely possible. Try changing your GPS to standalone mode, disabling all other location services (via WiFi and via cell tower) and putting it into Airplane Mode, then launch Google Maps. You can obtain a lock.
I have 100Mbps internet, and a Cisco EA4500 router
Galaxy Nexus gets around 30Mbps over WiFi.
Nexus 4 only gets 1.03Mbps down over WiFi
anyone else getting really atrocious speeds over WiFi?

Speedtest
Also, when trying to download apps from Play Store, small apps are taking forever to download.
So it's not just some incompatibility with Speedtest
I really wanna keep myself off of XDA, the more and more I read the more and more I wish I kept my SGS2 ):
Good thing I have 7 days to refund

I have no idea what you mean by "WiFi Canal"
but if you're talking about changing my WiFi channel, there is no need - every wireless device in my house gets great speeds:
Galaxy Nexus (x2, 2 family members have them)
Nexus 7
Asus EeePC 1000HE
MediaCentre PC
so it's nothing to do with my router, or my WiFi configuration. It's the phone.

Hope your problem will be solved dude
(Try McDonalds wifi too ?)
I have a feeling it's your router and/or firewall settings.
For example, on my friends connection It'll take me 5mintues to DL a 3mb app from the playstore, but the speedtest is just fine. At home, it'll download in a second or two.
While the phone is the only thing experiencing the issue, your router is the only thing that could be causing it. Have you tried anyone elses wifi?

I checked and Gomdolight is for Korean version (f340 I think), are you sure you can?
(in the thread of Gomdolight, 1 guy was successfully installed, but he said nothing different, hhope he did not mean about wifi)
Could you report your try here?
Thanks in advance
Yes, I did as well and came to the same conclusion as the Dev did regarding the post stating no real changes noticeable. I plan to pm that member later on to see if he has any more feedback/advice before I commit. From what I gather the more modded features involve Korean based apps and such so for a D950 user not to notice is not surprise. I should know more tomorrow evening weather or not it is effective or not. Would do it sooner but I need to stay connected today so..... I'll keep you posted.
For me, the wifi strength is important. The rom itself does not matter.
Anyway, waiting for your post
==== edit =====
I had some time to check Gomdolight. Actually it is not a ROM, but a Modifier (remove system apps)
I don't think they change something for wifi-driver, which I believe is the problem for the weak wifi.
but just let me know how it is improved with your Gflex
thanks

Hey,my apologies to all who were waiting on the results of my attempted flash of the Gomdolite firmware mod. I'm sorry to report that although it installed successfully( albiet in a limited capacity due to variant and build discrepancies), it did not resolve my wifi woes.I will continue running Gomdolite despite that fact. Off topic and my apologies in advance, but it has improved my devices overall speed and fluidity. Hope someone has a solution soon...Btw, since my D950 doesn't have to function as my primary phone as of yesterday, (returned to Samsung, Note4) I am willing to Guinea pig for the common good of finding a resolution to our issues.Let me know if you got anything to test.
