[Q] Force Close on Startup. Flashing doesn't Help - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I had a gingerbread version on my sgs. I flashed with a speedmod version which is intended for 2.2.1
That was obviously stupid. After I did that i tried to activate the lagfix and played around in the "Recovery mode menu". I don't know exactly what I did there.
My device did't boot anymore so I flashed it several times including repartitioning. After flashing i could boot android but the startup manager and loads of other applications keep force closing. I don't know how to stop them do that. Flashing many different versions (jpu, etc.) didn't help.
What coul'd I have destroyed that is not recovered by flashing with repartition?
Im pretty desperate...

after flashing jpu try to flash speedmod kernel then get into recovery mode and activate lagfix again.
tell me it works or not, thanks.

The flash of the speedmode seemed to went fine. Afterwards I still get force closes on startup. So I went to:
Recover mode -> advanced features -> lagfix options -> Convert Data to Ext
After reboot it says: "New filesystem config detected. Convert? I choose yes. Then it converts some stuff and reboots. Then he it says the exact same thing: "New filesystem config detected. Convert? I choose yes again. It converts some stuff and reboots....Exact same thing....
I choose "No enter recovery mode". There I choose disable lagfix. After reboot it says "New filesystem config detected. Convert?" I choose yes. It converts some stuff. After reboot it doesn't ask again. Still get force closes.
In the system my browser works. Pressing home button produces force closes. Trying to sync my google account and many other things force close, too.

Next I try:
Recovery -> lagfix options -> convert system -> reboot
"System conversion requested Convert?"
I choose convert to ext4.
It says done but doesn't boot beyond the first Galaxy S Screen.

Had simmilar problem, at the end I had to flash a 2.1 version with pit-filen from samfirmwar.com. Past that I could upgrade again to 2.3

Tried a 2.1 version. Didn't work either.

Did you use Pit both times?
I did and flashed Gingerbread after Eclair. No effect. Isn't there something else I can do besides flashing tons of firmwares?

any 2.1 rom (eclair) maybe try something like JM1 or JM8 it think thats 2.1

I allready had tried JM1. After booting it I still got force close messages.

Since I tried allmost all firmwares from samfirmware.com and still got force closes for many programms including the setup assistant, is there anything I could try besides flashing tons of firmwares?

[Q] Would having Voodo lag fix installed be a problem in updating to Froyo?

Some say, just disable Voodo and you'll be fine. But how to disable? Isn't it possible to uninstall it completely?
Some say, just boot into recovery and do a cache wipe and factory reset. This sound easy enough, but would this work?
I have international version GT i9000, stock ROM, only modification is root, and voodo color correction + lag fix pack.

And i Quote directly from the Site for All the lazy people out there.....
" Create a file or folder named “disable lagfix” in a a directory named “Voodoo” in your internal SD card.
Reboot
Done !
If you really want to uninstall it, you’ll need to flash another kernel like the original coming with your Firmware, or flash at least the “PDA” version of a Firmware.
Kies don’t see the phone when you’re in Ext4 mode. You’ll need to “disable lagfix” before Kies see it. "
about the cache wipe / factory reset , im wondering myself but being a kernel im 99.99% sure it wont be touched but just in case anything does go crazy id like to keep this part open for either someone more informed than i am or Curio himself to answer
and let me add a small Q here regarding the quoted part " Kies don’t see the phone when you’re in Ext4 mode. You’ll need to “disable lagfix” before Kies see it. "
how come everytime i hook up kies mtp starts on the phone but kies doesn't recognize it yet after a driver recovery it does ? is this like a temp fix ?
Say I do the disable voodo lag fix thing, by creating the file on my internal SD card, and then do the factory reset\cache wipe. And then install Froyo via kies, would the voodo lag fix be gone now? Or would it be still around with Froyo?

not the expert here but from what i understand , the voodoo lag fix is a kernal and ud need a FW update to mess around with that.
so from what i see factory reset/ cache wipe wont but installing Froyo will
Here are the steps:
1. Disable Voodoo lag fix.
2. Boot into recovery and do factory wipe/reset
3. Load original or newer firmware 2.1 or 2.2 using Odin and check off repartition!
4. Do factory wipe/reset again.
5. Restore all apps and settings
6. Done...enjoy fresh phone.

So? technically updating via Kies and Odin should give the same result or what?

settings / internet will not open after root and new ROM

I rooted and loaded 2 roms on the phone. First rom, everything was fine. The second rom, nothing works. I can not mount the phone, open settings, no contacts load, no internet and the three finger salute doesn't work. the secrete codes to get it back to factory ROM fails giving me an error about USSD codes. Any suggestions?
What roms did you flash. Were there lagfixes. Have you tried to flash stock with doin?
Captivate
Cog 2.2
First rom Cognition - that worked fine
Second Rom hybrid- after reboot, nothing 'Samsung' was working
I can't get the phone to mount in Windows OR Linux to load the stock rom
Which cognition? You may of had a lagfix installed that needed to be disabled prior to flashing something else. Do you have a pc or. A MAC. If pc search for odin. This will get you back to stock.

[Q] Stuck in Boot-Loop (Gingerbread,Juwe'sROM 4.0, CR-Root3.1, ext4)

Hi all,
I upgraded to Gingerbread and Juwe's ROM last night and all went well. That is until today when I ran the script to convert the filesystem to ext4. It rebooted into CWM and all seemed to go well except my phone is now stuck in a boot-loop. It gets as far as the initial "Galaxy S GT-I9000 Samsung" screen and then restarts to it every few seconds.
Background:
I followed the instructions as given in Juwes thread. Initially flashed XWJVB XEE firmware with bootloaders from this thread (this exact firmware I think) with re-partition,etc checked. After that I flashed CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS (no-repartition) and flashed ROM. ROM was working perfectly till I ran ext4.
Does anyone know of any way to fix this problem? I can boot into Download mode and CWM Recovery v3.0.0.5. I'm trying to avoid reflashing the ROM but if I can't get a solution soon I guess I'll just have to do that
Hmmm,
Are you able to get into recovery or download mode?
Edit: Just noticed you can.
Another question,
What did you use to convert to ext4?
Did you install Chainfire's ext4 addon?

Ya it's Chainfire's ext4 addon I used. Although it's just occurred to me that I think I used the one packaged with the ROM instead of the newest one from Chainfire's thread. Could it be an older version?
Yeah I really don't know about that. When we get the phone sorted, I would install his most recent addon to see if that's the issue.
As far as I know, you may only have 2 options.
First, you can try to do a factory reset in CWM.
If that fails, I'd start from the beginning, flashing with a 512 pit and re-partion.

Just tried the factory reset in CWM and no joy. Guess I'll re-partition when I get home. Should probably be doing some work at the moment anyway
Sorry man,
Next time, set everything up after you convert it to ext4. Might save you another headache.
Also, make sure you have some free space on your internal sd card. I try to leave 1.5gb free for file system conversions.
Oh and,
get some work done already
Before you go and flash everything again.
Try flashing Chainfire's 3.1 kernal again. It might pull it out of the boot loop. Worth a shot though before starting all over.
Hopefully it works out for you without starting all over.
I tried reflashing the kernel but no joy. Just went with the complete reflash in the end. Was painless enough because I had everything set up to go from the night before
Thanks for all the help electrotune! Appreciate it

[Q] Flash with Repartition doesn't remove Force Close

Hi,
I installed the speedmode and tried to use the lagfix and root on gingerbread. It obviously didn't work. After that I couldn't boot. After flashing different Android versions (2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1, 2.3) using repartition and three files I still get Force Closes after booting (for examplfe immediatly after booting by the Setup Assistant).
Browser Works. I can phone people. Gmail and Google Maps Force Close. Adding a Google Account leads to force close.
What could I have damaged that can not be undone by flashing with repartition and three files?

I made a Soft- and Hardreset several times. When I click on settings -> sd -> Format there doesn't seem to happen much. Takes a few seconds. Even most Data on my SD remains.

Need help with SGS Looping Issues

Essentially I am at a lost of what to do.
I have tried everything to no prevail which leads to me to my defeat post here for a cry for help.
I DO NOT believe I have bricked it yet because I can still get into download mode and CVM but it doesn't look like this image: http://blog.laptopmag.com/wpress/wp.../Clockwork-Mod-Boot-Screen-e1279545586372.jpg
which is what I wanted. My original plan was to install a new ROM however, I do not have that option "install zip from sdcard". Therefore I had to install the Speedmod Kernel which is why
ANYWAYS moving on, I have tried Heimdall and Odin. I have been able to bootup the phone. HOWEVER it doesn't load a ROM because the Samsung Galaxy GT i9000 logo just keeps looping. Like I said, I am able to get into Download mode and CVM with the new menu. However, when I click anything the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I have tried everything and I'm looking to advice.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
If I remember correctly the Speedmod Kernel uses the power button to select options and if you click the home button the screen will go black.
If this is not the issue then reverting to a stock Rom is probably your best option.
Find a stock Rom at: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa (this link is for international version) just select your country. from the links just above Firmwares for GT-I9000 .
From here you want to get a pit 512 & make sure you have a firmware with 3 files (PDA, Phone, CSC) . From here there are plenty tutorials on how to install a stock ROM.
If your issue is not pressing the wrong button in speedmod let me know and I'll be happy to provide a basic list of what to do... or provide a link.
Thanks for the quick reply, I have done that. I have installed the best one I could find: I9000XXJVQ
I put the following 4 files in Odin:
s1_odin_20100512 (PIT)
CODE (PDA)
CSC (CSC)
MODEM (PHONE)
It brings me to Android system recover <3e>. From there I'm at a lost at what to do. I see when it says
Code:
Copying media file
E:failed to mount. /sdcard (File exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard you storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Media files copy failed.

From there I do not know what to do. When I click reboot system now; nothing occurs, the SGS image at the beginning still continues to loop. I'm looking at how to install the CVM so I can install my custom ROM.
I believe in the past I managed to do it (I installed the Dark Knight mod; but when it booted it said Encryption Unsuccessful and it only happened once. Was never able to get past that screen).
Anyways, that's the instruction from what I did above. What next (It's still looping at the SGS text at the startup).
EDIT:
From this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9336821&postcount=2
I then followed the install instructions for Root XXJVQ
The thing installed, it still has the issues. Opens the SGS start screen and doesn't go anywhere.
Further EDIT:
I then restarted the phone with following combination. (Power + Vol Up + Home). It then launched in CVM. I cleared partition and cache. I then installed the .zip ROM file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510940&highlight=cyanogen) from SD card. Rebooted system. It launches. Says "Encryption Unsuccessful" Please restart phone. I click the restart phone button. It restarts, I then get the android looking icon dead on the ground with it's chest open with a "Red triangle !" above it. Stuck from here.
Wish I could help further. In my experience I had to flash stock twice. Once with with pit file and repartition selected. Once without pit file and repartition unchecked.
From there to flash a custom ROM you need to get rid of 3e recovery by flashing something like CF-roof. Then once you have cf-root you can instal custom ROM.
Here is link for cf-root

HOw long did it take for the ROM to install?
Have you tried removing the battery, battery back in recovery and reflash the ROM.
ICSSGS 4.2 has a requirement to be flashed twice. (different rom but may be similar issue)
Once to update the bootloader which will result in a boot loop when coming from a Gingerbread ROM and again to fully install the rom
Lastly download the ROM again checking the MD5 checksum before flashing
I trust that this will assist
Does it matter if it is installed from the External SD or Internal SD because when I try to install from the internal SD it says "Can't mount /emmc/" so I'm only able to install from the external SD.
I tried installing it twice. I still get the encryption unsuccessful screen. I also re-downloaded the ROM.
OK ii think what you need to do now is try to get the phone to boot successfully into a stock rom for your region.
You mentioned in the first 2 or 3 posts that you did download from SamFirmware a stock rom.
It is probably a Odin flashable ROM
Is it a 3 file or 1 file?
Flash and then boot up the phone to be able to use it.
If successfull move on to the next step.
If you have been able to do this before i would suggest to try a different ROM.
I can personally recomend the ICSSGS 4.2 ROM following the instructions on the opening post for that ROM
If this works then try Dark Knight or other ROM
If this post has helped please use the Thanks Button

Unfortunately, it does not boot into stock ROM. It just loops.
I tried to do it over again. I used a different firmware: I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA
So let's begin by retracing everything I did.
1) I essentially did this: http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/learn-how-to-install-xxjvu-firmware-on-galaxy-s-i9000/ (so it had the 4 files: pit, PDA, Code & CSC)
2) After I did that, I went into Odin and Put this as PDA "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS" and clicked start
3) It then loaded but it keep looping. I had a feeling it didn't have a ROM installed. I erased data, cache and etc. Then I installed the Dark Knight 3 ROM. Install by external SD because I couldn't get the internal SD to work "Can't mount /emmc/" error.
4) I then reboot. I get the ROM loading screen. Then boom, stuck on Encryption Unsuccessful.
5) I put it back in recovery mode and repeat step 3 again.
6) I get the encryption error again.
Pretty much stuck at there.
so what you are saying is that no matter what firmware you flash it will boot loop?
I personally would not be trying a ICS ROM until you can boot a gingerbread rom successfully.
I have personally softbricked my phone once where i then was able to get into 3BR but was unable to boot due to a bad flash reflashing a gingerbread rom a couple of times with odin worked for me.
Try reflashing your JVU rom 2 times in a row.
I assume that you are able to get into 3BR if so what happens if you try to mount /system is there a error message?
When the phone is boot looping what is displayed on the screen?

from what you are doing it seems like you aren't doing what we say. Sorry if this is not the case.
1. Follow steps from your link above.
2. Attempt to reboot. Most likely you will be stuck in boot.
3. Flash again steps as link above. This time do not use pit and make sure repartition is unchecked.
4. Now boot. This time you should boot into stock.
5. Once in stock set USB debugging on and connect phone to PC and copy ROM you want to flash to internal sd card .
6. Flash CF-root with Odin.
8. Restart phone in to recovery and flash ROM on sd card.
Sorry to repeat this but none of what you say mentions flashing stock twice once with and once without repartition checked. You need to do this right after each other.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
So your suggestion is to keep doing JVU flashing until I can get it to work? Do I just follow that instruction and do the flash once with the PIT file (and repartition) and do it again without the PIT file? If it still doesn't boot, what then?
The phone boot looping. RIGHT when you turn on the phone. It has that Samsung Galaxy I9000 screen. It just has that, goes black for like 2-3 seconds then resets itself over and over again.
There is no issue with mount /system. I believe when I try to mount /emmc, there is an error. This is important because this is what lets me access the internal SD.

If you are flashing through Odin twice all three files 1st time with pit and repartition checked, second time without pit and repartition unchecked and still have issues then I would say problem may be with phone but I am new to this myself. Only commenting and given suggestions as I had similar issues which I resolved with steps I mentioned.
Options would be to download another stock ROM and do a checksum to ensure it is fine, download a different version of Odin (i use odin 1.85) and a new 512 pit file, reinstall the drivers for the phone, try it all on a different PC. Also make sure kies is not running when you do this (kill any background services.for kies) and try disable your antivirus on your PC. Also remove external as card and Sim.
If these suggestions don't help try search google for those errors you are getting. That's what I have done and managed to sort every issue so far.

Ok lots of reading in past posts here's what I would do and it works everytime. Google links to xxjvu firmware and and use those three files plus pit 512 repartition checkedand flash. Then to root your phone simply go to darky website. But before you do any of that tell me what rom you were on before you flashed new kernel and what exactly were you trying to accomplish out of your phone. ie.end result and who your service provider is. If you pm me I can walk you through it no problem.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
It was 2.3.3 I believe before I did it.
My goal is to put a nice custom ROM (looking towards Dark Knight 3).
I have no idea what the specific darky rom I need.
Service provider was Virgin Canada.
Been thinking. Have you tried using heimdal. Try search for a tutorial that flashes a stock ROM with heimdal.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
What did you have before the problems? Was it a lagfixed rom with ext4 partitions?
I've had strange problems when I tried to flash stuff with a lagfix, try to flash your stock base, and then flash a kernel that supports ext4. See if it boots up. If it does, disable lagfix and then change to whatever you want
