So as the title says i am stuck in recovery mode, Heres the story.
Got a new Samsing Galaxy S Rooted it installed lagfix all went with out a hitch. Started to install patch to allow me to connect to adhoc networks before hand I backed up my system folder using adb pull. I copied the files for the crack to get adhoc working. My wireless on my phone stops working, I restore the back up I made using adb push and restarted the phone now it boots into recovery mode everytime.
The PC still connects to my phone and I can still use adb. Now how can I undo my stupidity or atleast fix my phone?
Cheers guys

that's a good sign at least
see if you can get into the Download Mode with the 3 button
then Flash it with Odin back to a stock ROM
Ok i am not sure what you are refering to by download mode what 3 button combo do i use to get into it? I was just looking at the Odin software and it sounds like it might do the job but where can could i get a stock ROM? My phone is running Android 2.1 would it hurt to try installing the leaked copy of 2.2 using Odin?

I have the Rogers Captivate - SGH-i896. I was following a tutorial on enabling tethering on my phone (on maggadget) but something went really wrong. I got Odin3 working, but when my captivate restarted, it got the a screen with "AT&T World Phone" and froze. I unplugged my phone and restarted it, but everytime I restart my phone, it shows the "I896 Samsung" screen then stays on the "AT&T World Phone" screen and doesn't do anything else.
I can still restart to go into download mode.
Have I just killed my phone? Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can get my phone back up?
flash another rom with Odin
would you point me to a good tutorial for that? thanks a bunch
Since you have download mode you are ok. You can get it back going using odin, but I am not aware of a Rogers-specific Odin flashable ROM.
I don't know what the 3-button combo situation is with the Rogers Captivate, but many AT&T Captivates lose it when flashed to stock, so I would not use the Odin one-click flasher on that phone, because if it disables download mode and doesn't work you'll be screwed. People are running the Cognition ROM on Rogers phones so you might try that. Beta 9.1.3 has an Odin flashable version. There is also an Odin version of the stock AT&T ROM with 3-button fix, which may work for you, at least temporarily.
If you get it to a point where you can install clockwork recovery on the phone, someone posted a nandroid backup of his Rogers phone here. (If you can get into recovery mode then you may be able to push a clockwork recovery to the phone via adb, e.g. "adb push update.zip /sdcard".) That backup hung my phone after the AT&T logo, but mine is an AT&T version and I ran the restore from a froyo build and I really don't know if one or both of those facts had anything to do with the failure.
What is "clockwork recovery"?
I will install the Cognition, thanks!

Sounds like a good plan. Clockwork recovery is an enhanced recovery mode that has added functions.
I tried installing Cognition, but Odin3 won't detect my phone, now. Any suggestions?

Odin must be running before the phone is plugged in. Disconnect the phone from the computer. Start Odin (for some people right-clicking and running it as administrator is necessary to get it to work). Now put you phone in download mode by holding vol up+down and pluggin in the USB cable. It should detect in Odin.
f*ck yeah! cognition looks so good.
I read elsewhere that your browser sometimes interferes with Odin's detection of your phone. That was my case, thanks for your help <3
you can fix with odin but im not sure what you will need to do about unlocking, i read somewhere that people were haveing trouble with losing the unlock code after the froyo upgrade. it's not official so you may have trouble getting support from rogers or att. ive never unlocked a phone so i dont know what the details of doing so will be but i understand it is more common up in canada because of roaming charges.
there is are a few odin flashable att roms that can be rooted, clockwork mod recovery installed and a cognition eclair version can be used. id do a search of unlock threads on the forum first and see what people have to say about froyo if unlocking is something you are interested in.
I had the same thing. I disconnected the cable, held the power, v+ and V- buttons, the screen went blank and then released the volume buttons. Its all good now!
Now my phone is not detecting the 3g network. I think it has something to do with using at & t rom while on a rogers net work.any ideas?

You have to manually enter your Rogers APN from settings -> wireless networks -> mobile networks -> access point names. Search up "Rogers APN android" and I think it's the first one that pops up.
Yes, got it working. No need for my apartment internet connection now that I can use Mobile AP and USB Tethering!
Download mode not working...
I have the Rogers Captivate I896 and I'm still stuck on the situation where download mode does not work. This happened after I tried flashing one of the froyo firmwares for the I897 version of the phone.
Whenever I press the volume up and down buttons together and plug in the usb cable, only the battery icon shows greyed out with the loading circle. I've tried going into recovery mode pressing both buttons and the power button, the only thing that happens is the at&t welcome screen shows but keeps looping.
Is it possible that I bricked my phone? If so, would I be able to bring it back to Rogers even though it shows the at&t boot screen? I have bought the phone two weeks ago, so I'm still under the one moth warranty.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hey, thanks for the link. I've read the instructions and it seems that the phone would still need to be able to get to the "PC ! Phone" logo. And I am not able to get to that on my phone.
I'll still try it, however, I don't have a spare micro usb with me at the moment. Does anyone have any alternative methods before I go through this?

Based on my observation reading through that thread, as long as your phone powers up, there's a very good chance you can get it into download mode using the jig. The only time the jig doesn't work is when your phone's screen is completely blank no matter which which button you press.
If you have the phone connected to a usb cable and its rebooting wait till you hear the usb connected sound on your pc after the att logo screen, then send a "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot download" command and it will reboot and go into recovery or download mode. Usb debugging has to be enabled though.
Hello,
I verified that I am able to enter download mode by plugging in the USB cable while pressing both volume buttons with the device turned off. I also verified that I can enter recovery mode by pressing both volume buttons and the power button. So I am pretty sure that I know how to enter the modes.
I then ran the Odin version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 (by mistake, I didn't know it differed from the one in http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html). I assume that simply overrode everything with the stock ROM instead because I did not get the chance to select the SpeedMod kernel.
However, after that the hotkey method was no longer working. I was only able to enter download and recovery mode using adb. I used this to flash SpeedMod using the correct Odin version from the SpeedMod page.
Then I proceeded by going into recovery mode and extracting captivate-efsbackup.zip. I went into download mode (again with adb, keys still didn't work) and flashed cm7-captivate-initial-kernel.tar.
Now, however, I'm in real trouble. I can enter neither recovery nor download mode. No matter if I use hotkeys or adb, the system reboots, but then just shows the "Galaxy S\n cyanogen^(mod)" image.
Anyone able to help? Why aren't the hotkeys working anymore after running Odin?
I have no explanationas to why buy do have a suggestion. Try the AIO tool box. If the phone boots, just enable usb debugging and follow instructions. You should probably use the 3 button fix option.
I recently had done a clean up of my cappy because after tons of flashes it had become a mess. After flashing back to stock I lost dl mode and recovery. Whipped out the AIO...ver.2.5 , booted phone, put in debug.. Reformated with 3 button and boom!, back in business. Be sure your net framework is current 4 version, install the C++ lib as siggested.
Took a likely pain in the ass and turned it into an inconvenience. Just follow the instructions...

First of all, what model of Captivate do you have (the model number is underneath your battery, on the phone itself. It will be a number between 1006-1014).
And I hope you do realise that CM7 is a particularly difficult (than standard) ROM to flash, and if you don't know what you're doing (or miss a step), you can perma-brick your phone easily.
If you can't get into Download Mode by any means, then the only last suggestion I can give you is to try a USB Jig (search around in the Captivate Forum here, you'll see what I mean).
Thanks for the suggestions. Here is how I recovered:
Download SpeedMod Kernel
Create a nandroid backup on a working phone, copy that over to the broken one
Copy zImage from SpeedMod kernel to SD on broken phone with adb
Enter shell mode on phone
Look into misc/recovery.fstab to figure out the name of the sdcard block device
Mount sdcard with `mount [blockdev] /sdcard`
Flash zImage with `flash_image boot /sdcard/zImage`
Flash nandroid backups with `flash_image {system, cache, datadata} /sdcard/{system,cache,datadata}.img` (but not data)
Leave the phone without battery for at least 1 and at most 6 hours (my phone appeared completely dead after this operation, not even adb shell access, so I went to bed frustrated)
Now you can boot into download mode again using "adb reboot download" (which didn't work when running the CM7 kernel)
Use One Click Odin to revert to stock firmware
Install 3ButtonFix to get combos working again
Note that the original problem that caused all the trouble was that flashing the stock ROM with Odin One-Click disables the 3 Button combos. You have to use the 3ButtonFix to get it working again.

My wife's captivate is build 1009. I can't seem to find any info on it. It was on stock froyo but rooted with non-market apps enabled. I odin back to eclair and was trying to install CWM. I put the update.zip on the SD but when I try to boot into recovery (Volume up + Down and pwr) it just boots up normal. I had to use a jig to get it into download mode originally.
Any Ideas?

Did you release power button when at&t screen comes up?
SIGNATURE : Life is like a box of captivates, you never know if your gps will work
Hi,
My phone is 1007 and had the same problem.
Solution:
- You need to have the 3buttonfix.zip and the cwm update.zip on your SD.
- adb reboot recovery (from windows command line with enabled usb debugging on the phone)
- update to cwm then flash 3buttonfix
Warning: 3buttonfix only contains the Secondary Boot Loader so use it only if you have the stock bootloaders or your phone will get a hard brick
I recently got a 1009 build and have had zero problems. When I got it, the first thing I did was root it and fox the whole 3e recovery thing (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213), then it was good to go.
I have found that this phone I got is the best one I have had, period.
I first had a 1007 - crappy gps but never had any loss of button combos or anything. It always was easy to flash anything.
Then I had a 1008 - awesome gps, but had problems with losing button combos when flashing different things.
Now on 1009 - best of both. awesome gps, all button combos work flawlessly.
on my 1008 I did notice that sometimes I could get to recovery holding all three buttons longer than usual - until the att screen flashed a couple of times. Maybe this would work on your 1009.
Also on the 1008 I would flash back to stock with ODIN 1 click, then I could reflash the stock 3 button fix to get them back.
When the update.zip is in SD, and then on stock recovery you have to press re-install packages twice before cwm will kick in.

Thanks for all the help. It is appreciated. I tried every button combo and short and long presses and nothing works. I was able to use a jig to get into download and get back to stock 2.1 I tried to just use kies to update to the stock 2.2 but I keep getting "unregistered device" message and won't "light up" the update button.
I may try going to AT&T and seeing if they will let me exchange it or calling Samsung and seeing what they will do.
If all else fails I may try the abd thing. Once I figure that out
Thanks again for the suggestions.
I've got Serendipity 7 on my phone and loving it! Never imagined I'd have so much trouble with this one. It was only rooted.
Did you try the 3E recovery fix yet? I just got a replacement phone today and it is a 1009 build. The 3 button combo is working on my end. Sorry you are having issues.

It is supposed to. I think I misspoke thought, it should be the 3 button combo fix. Not the 3e recovery.

The key combo to get into recovery for the Cappy is NOT Vol up + Vol down + Power
The key combo to get into recovery for the Cappy IS Vol up + Power until the screen comes on, then release.
Well I had to go to ATT to pick up a micro cell. They gave me a $200 credit on my bill! There is almost no reception at my house.
While I was there I talked to them about my wife's phone. We have the AT&T warranty. He gave me a number for the warranty department.
They were able to tell that the phone had been rooted. This is after odin back to 2.1. They did offer to allow me exchange it for the deductible of $125. No Thanks!
The phone still works fine. I just need to learn a little more to get it updated. The suggestions here should work.
I'm sorry but i think you all are crazy.
The 3e recovery fix will not help you get to recovery. It unlocks the 3e recovery so you can flash unsigned zips like on 2e.
The key combo for captivates in indeed Vol up + Vol down + Power (not on ginger leak), i use it 5 times a day. Hold down all three untill you see the atnt screen, keep holding and you should see it go black and come back again, then release power.
And if you odin one click back to stock and master clear atnt can NOT tell that you were ever rooted. There will be no trace of ever doing anything, just as fresh as it was out of the box. Many people have got replacements by doing this.
But if the recovery combo doesnt work then the 3 button fix and adb are your options
When I try to upgrade with kies it says unregistered device. An earlier post mentioned a fix for this but I'm not sure if I'm up to it yet.

Anyone who wants flash anything on an android device should install adb on their computer.
How long have you been trying to get this to work? Adb takes like 5 minutes to install (if that) and once it's there it's just 3 words to get into recovery, Seriously it's "adb reboot recovery" and bam.
What did you install? What I read has me installing many programs and plugins on the computer. Do I need all of that or is there a simpler package? What needs to be on the phone.

Hello fellow captivate users, I need some help here!
I've just brought a 'bricked' at&t captivate off of trademe here in NZ (it's like ebay) and I'm having a little trouble recovering it.
With the help of a homemade JIG I was able to force DOWNLOAD mode, and have tried using ODIN to flash various all-in-one firmwares. However, it seems no matter which I use the phone always ends up in some sort of bootloop, either with just the at&t logo looping, the at&t plus either a samsung s i897 or i9000 screen looping or just the samsung screen looping (depending on one-click used).
So far I've tried these oneclicks-
I897UCJF6 with bootloaders
I897UCKK4 with bootloaders
Plus various other packages that use odin to flash the different parts of the filesystem etc...
I've also used different ports and cables on the computer (although download mode and connection to pc do not SEEM to be a problem)
I'm sure I'm missing something here, but I'm also sure I'm following each firmwares instructions to the 'T'!
I've flashed other android devices in the past with no issues, is there something the samsung requires that I'm missing or messing up? (It's probably the latter )
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers XDA Gurus
I have had success using Heimdall when stuck in a boot loop before. It will change the drivers on your computer so you will have to deal with that (Odin won't recognize them) but this can be dealt with. Apex even has a Heimdall package that will put cwm on your computer.
ok well you HAVE gingerbread bootloaders... STOP FLASHING BOOTLOADERS. gingerbread bootloaders are good with any captivate rom. no need to flash again.
odin likes to lock up. if odin locks up durring bootloaders... well its the only REAL way to permanently brick a cappy... until you unbrick it..
do you need the jig? is the button combo not working? both volume + plug in usb to PC
if odin is seeing the phone (turning yellow) and "PASS" ing the flash(turning green) then you dont have usb port or cable problems.
but try this KK4 gingerbread heimdall package, with re-partitioning.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386924
heimdall is like odin but open source (more features and more stable), but it uses different drivers that it will install itself, but that usb port will be your heimdall port, all others will work with odin, unless you install the heimdall drivers on other ports too.
or...
try flashing a custom rom using the guide in my sig. it will quickly give you a custom kernel with cwm recovery, you can mount usb to pc from recovery menu, then transfer a rom to flash.
give that a shot...

Thanks, I'll give this a shot first. If no go I'll try using the cwm method from your sig. How does the sd need to be formated/partitioned for captivate - guess I'll just use a single fat32 parition to start.
To sum up, now that I've got stock GB bootloaders, I'll quit using oneclicks with bl's included. USB cables and ports are fine. I'll try the KK4 heimdall package that was linked, if still no go I'll flash a custom rom and use clockwork to install changes from then on.
Thanks again
I must be messing up - having trouble getting into recovery.
Here's what I did;
The links here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386924 are dead, so I went straight to method 2.
Downloaded speedmod kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=566807&d=1302623831
Used odin to flash (kernel selected under pda), this seems to have worked as I now have the samsung i897 screen show up after the at&t. BUT when I try to enter recovery via three button method I get nothing.
How long should I hold the 3 buttons down for? (How many bootloops?)
Should I let go of them at th at&t splash, the samsung s i897 splash or at the blank screen?
All of this was done after my last odin oneclick attempt (which was a KK4, re-part, bootloaders included flash from here on xda)
**edit
I've also tried using the heimdall package (i897-Speedmod-K13E-GBbootloaders-One-Click.jar) to install the kernel with no luck getting into recovery.

Yep, no adb on bootloop. Still no joy getting into recovery - it's a stubborn wee device! Gona try some different kernels today.

Its pretty handy, you can push a framework-res you are messing with without having to make a zip, and if you broke it and it loops, you can push the original back, reboot and you're back in business

How exactly? adb doesn't see the captivate because it's only connected for a second before it reboots, adb just tells me device not found or something to that affect.
You have to hit enter at the Right moment, it takes practice
Lol, lucky I've got plenty of patience then!
Strangely if I 1-click back to stock eclair (maybe froyo not in front of PC at mo, and I know I shouldn't be messing with bootloaders but ehhh) I am able to get into what I assume is samsungs recovery mode, but I have to hold button combo for maybe 3 or 4 bootloops. Sticky button(s) maybe?
Am I able to use adb from there to get an update.zip to internal sdcard?
How come if the Odin oneclick seems to work I still end up in bootloops? Something not doing its job right? Partitions not working or kernel or system or bootloaders? Looking through adb shell the system looks intact-but still looping away!
Also am I right in assuming that because it gets to download mode it is eventually fixable?
Sent from my FUSIONideos using XDA
Just an update - from the stock eclair recovery I'm unable to push to the internal SD, get a permission error. Unable to remount that either, comes back with a fairly generic remount not allowed error.
Looking through the forums most people seem to have trouble getting into download mode rather than recovery - doesn't seem any cwm kernel will let me into recovery. Phone is model 1007 if that helps.
Is it possible the internal SD is stuffed? Can't see why all oneclicks end in loop - shouldn't they be overwriting the entire internals?
Gona format a microSD from my tablet and see if that will help, should I leave it fat or use Ubuntu to ext4 it for stock Samsung?
Sent from my FUSIONideos using XDA
If a Internal or External SD card is fried, then no amount of formatting and flashing will help it.
Is there any way to tell if the internal is cooked though? Odin and heimdall both seem happy to flash to the phone, but I've yet to find a package that doesn't end with a bootloop.
There must be some hardware issue though, seems unusual that aside from stock eclair I'm unable to enter recovery. According to the guy I got it from, it simply died while he attempted to update firmware, but the fact that I'm able to flash from download mode would suggest that's not the issue.
I guess there's no way to tell if hardware is cooked other than to send to samsung, is it common for people to get stuck with bootloops from stock flashes? Should I give up and see what samsung would charge to fix (if they will/can) or keep attempting different oneclicks (without bootloaders of course )
How about a non one click?
I've heard some peoples phones bootloop with one clicks, but work fine with .tar packages and the full Odin flashing utility.
Worth a shot. Got to wait a few days for my net to reset though, hit my limit for the month and it's painfully slooow - damn NZ's overpriced adsl!
Sent from my FUSIONideos using XDA
Still not working unfortunately. Using packages with odin3 gets me the same results, bootloops and no access to recovery. I also downloaded the aio captivate package and used the heimdall that came with that to flash stock eclair, which ended with a kernel panic screen - though am able to access recovery. Recovery doesn't see my fat32 microsd though so unable to flash from there.
I don't know my adb shell commands well enough to try and mount or format internal sd and I get permission denied when trying to push update.zip to internal sd via adb.
Unless anyone has any other ideas I'm stumped for now.
When my internal sd got messed up from cognadaian bacon (ooooold dg ROM) i reformated it with my computer and it then let me Load another rom on it... don't remeber if fat 32 or not ....mabey someone else might know
Edit: mabey designgears remembers what fix it when cognadian bacon porked it
