I have been trying to flash the new v5 of voodoo but have been getting stuck at the samsung logo like a lot of people.. so i read pretty much the entire thread and saw people were having success using the new v3 good.zimage and then flashing v4 so i flashed it w/ success. After i flashed v3 my pc will no longer pick up the tablet ... i have no idea what to do because now i cant even revert to stock.. i really wanted to get the 1.4 kernal working, not to say v3 of voodoo isnt good, i just wanted to OC it.. ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated. 2nd question.. on the voodoo forum there is a link to ECO2 ext4 files.. What are those/what do they do/ and how do i apply them? assuming i can get my pc to recognize my tablet.
Note: i am not an advanced user and only have experience with heimdall and rsdlite.

Hi guys,
Im thinking of flasing a custom rom using odin.
Im running stock froyo 2.2.
PDA: I9000XWJPA
PHONE: I9000XXJPP
CSC: I9000XEEJP4
My phone is rooted and lag fixed. I understand that i need to remove the lag fix before and flash.
I updated to this using the registry hack. My questions are as follows...
1) Can i flash a custom rom from stock 2.2 or do i need to firstly flash a kernal with recovery 2e and then flash a custom rom?
2) Am i right in thinking that the PDA is the right bit to be looking at i.e when people say this rom is usable with JPA / JPO etc. The phone and CSC are not important when flashing a custom rom ( but still needed obviously )
3) If by some miracle of god we ever do get 2.3 and i flash back to stock Froyo via odin using a rom from samfirmware.com, will kies recognise my phone? Or will i forever be destined to flash "unofficially" through odin.
4) Looking at the PDA etc given above can anybody recommend a good rom to flash with gingerbread theme and apps. ( i keep seeing Darky's rom popping up in conversations ) and also have a link to it if you would be so kind. Im not lazy but theres so many roms all over i want to make sure i get the right one.
5) Once i have recovery 2e can i flash future roms over the top using rom mananger by clockworkmods and not have to go through odin? Or how does that work?
If i could get some clear answers to the above that would be great.
Yes i am a newbie at this but i am confident that i understand the basics, its just a couple of things above that i want clearing up before i proceed.
I know how to use odin correctly. ( close kies first / make sure odin opened before plugging in phone etc. )
P.S Yes i have 3 button recovery and download mode.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and a big thank you to any body that takes the time to respond with help.
Any body that can help?
dude i feel your pain. i've rooted and installed custom roms on two other phones, most recent the HTC Desire Z. and it was quite a nightmare to just start off to know what the first step is, there are soo many different guides its hard to know which is what and what has now been superceeded by something else!
now i'm trying to get a custom rom on my galaxy S too, but really having a hard time understanding everything becuase guides and stuff are so different for different roms, gets confusing and dont know which one is for me!
my phone is already rooted, i have firmware 2.1-update1, i know i have voodoo lagfix somewhere installed. but my base band version is I9000XXJM4, which i hav'nt seen in any guide! where did you get your seperate PDA, PHONE, CSC info from?
sorry i could'nt help you and i justed added a bunch more questions to mix
also how did you manage to get Clockwork Recovery on your phone? i have recovery 2e atm. i downloaded Rom manager from the market and tried installing Clockwork rewcovery, but first it would not even download. then i tried next day and it downloaded it through rom manager. but i dont think it installed it. i went into recovery mode and then it tried to auto-install clockwork recovery in recovery mode! but it just hanged at zero status bar for like 20 mins. i turned the phone off and on, went back into recovery mode and it was still recovery 2e, how do i get clockwork recovery to flash as the recovery mode?
Type *#1234#into your dial pad and it will come up. If I'm right I believe that 2.1 is more simple to flash over than 2.2 which is the bit that's confusing me.
I believe that you would need to flash a new kernel with recovery 2e and then flash a new Rom over the top.
I'm a but confused though as to weather or not I would need to flash back to 2.1 and then do a couple more flashes to get the job done.
Can some one please clear this up.

1. You don't need to have 2.1 rom to flash, since you'll be able to do all the flashing using Odin and download mode. Just flash a kernel, using odin, that has clockworkmod integrated, and you'll be able to flash most roms and kernels with the clockworkmod.
Speemod kernel is a great kernel, and has clockworkmod included.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
2. PDA is the rom part. CSC is important when using stock roms. I think that custom roms have CSC included in them.
3. You'll always be able to flash with Kies by using the Kies Registry Hack or by flashing a stock rom through odin. Kies will recognise your phone even if you are on a custom rom, but I'm not sure if it'll flash your phone.
4. I prefer Docs Ultra Slim roms because it's light, and you can customize them however you want. Darky's rom is a good option if you want all the features of a stock rom, and more. I use a Gingerbread theme with Doc's rom.
Links,
Darky's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Doc's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Both can be installed through ClockWorkMod
5. I think I answered this already.
Thank you for clearing that up. Very helpful but unfortunately you now raised another question haha.
You said that I would always be able to flash through kies using the registry hack... but wasn't that disabled so the registry hack wouldn't work any more a couple of versions back on. 803 or whatever it is?
And you also said that kies would recognise my phone but might not flash it which if I'm reading it right.contradicts.what you said about always been able to flash through kies.
Thank you so much for previous post it was very helpful.
Sorry if I sound stupid for.asking so many questions but I want to make sure I have covered all the angles before I proceed.
Again thanks for taking the time to help.

By registry hack, I really meant the Kies Registry Patcher app found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628
Works on all Kies versions at least for now.
Like the original registry hack, this using this app makes Kies think that you have a stock rom and as long as Kies thinks that you have a stock rom, it will flash your phone.
In the sentence where I said that Kies will recognise your phone but won't flash, I mean't that it wouldn't flash without the Registry Patcher.
Thank you sooooooo much for your help dude.

all of my specs if needed

I am a little unsure exactly what you are asking but....you can flash different kernals to different roms using recovery. Put the kernal on your sd card. In recovery pick install zip from sd, choose zip, click on kendal you want installed, then click yes.
You can also download SGS kernal falsher which you use to select the kernal on your sd card and it will install it for you and the reboot your phone automatically.
Thx

What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?
First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

Should be fine with it, can you direct me to the Odin rom in question please? I take it that its pre-rooted with clockwork recovery?
You could post the steps as it's for a friend and I can direct your post to him.
Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help
Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?
Hello All,
This is my first post! But I have been visitor of this forum for some time now. Its been a great learning experience! OK ...let me come straight to the point..
Important Phone Specs:
-Samsung Captivate with stock ATT froyo (UCKB1)
-rooted, installed one-click lag fix (other minor things, like removed all bloatware, overclocked etc.)
I am planning on changing the icons in the notification bar (for example battery icon mod) using UOT (ultimate online theme kitchen) and I have the UOT zip file ready.
Q1. It is not clear if this zip file can be flashed from the stock recovery mode.
Per my understanding, these are unsigned files and hence might not work with stock recovery mode. Can some one please confirm?
Q2. If stock recovery mode does not work, then I plan to install clockwork mod recovery from the ROM Manager apk available on the market.
a) Since I will be using a custom recovery image, I assume I will no longer be able to use KIES to perform any stock updates if and when they become available. Is that correct?
b) How easy is it to revert back to stock recovery? Can you please let me know the procedure (or) point me to a link with this information?
The reason I ask is because I would like to stay stock as much as I can for the moment.
Thanks all for your help.
Regards.
I have used the UOT kitchen zips on stock KB1 but not with the stock recovery. I think you have to use CWM recovery. There's really no reason to go back to stock recovery. If you ever want to use Kies in the future to get updates (assuming ATT ever releases GB through Kies), you would have to flash back to stock anyway for Kies to recognize the phone.
Jackman,
Thanks for the response. I agree with you. I am not hopeful that ATT would release GB any time soon for captivate...so yeah I makes sense to go ahead with the CWM recovery.
I just wanted to know the pros and cons before I get started with the process.
read the how to flash custom roms link in my sig. new user guide too, find the part about stickies.
#1 correct.
#2 rom manager is only good for froyo roms on captivate... there are froyo kernels with CWM built in and tweaked that run fine on stock roms, but you must Odin flash the kernel.... which leads to...
#3 keis is garbage we use odin, the official samsung flasher utility. and we flash the same .tar files keis uses.
#4 easy to get back to stock. odin-one-click stock flashes are ONE CLICK. Sticky in Captivate Dev section. (use new user guide to find.)
Kies is trash. Even if you go back o stock, you probably need to modify code to make sure your phone's ID is still the correct one. It really isn't worth it considering Kies is just ODIN with a different UI and a craptistic amount of "checks" wich makes it fail 90% of the time.
I hardly ever have problems with odin. odin 1.3 sucked 1.5and newer work great. the homemade one clicks can be buggy. md5 check wont let you edit file names of tars. other than that i DONT have problems. its all i use. dont like heimdall and having to change my drivers for it.
Hey Guys! Im going to explain how i got my self in this situation
I got my new Note 2 days ago and decided to root it at first. (KK4)
Which i did but not with CWM Manager so i used the InitialCFRootFlasher to get CWM Manager working.
Then i used Odin to flash the XLA4 on my device so i could get the RocketRom after that. But now when i want to go inte CWM Recovery mode to do a Nandorid backup i just get to the original recovery mode. And when i open CWM manager it says that i need a CF-Root V5.0 or newer.
What should i do? Really didnt know how to search for this so sorry if there already is a thread about this.
Please help me out guys
Dont wanna ruin my phone because i didnt know better
Thanks in advance!
Keep calm mate, don't worry.
I just wonder if your phone is properly rooted or not. If it is ok, you can download and flash CF-Root for LA4-v5.0 here http://download.chainfire.eu/140/CF-Root/SGN/CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LA4-v5.0-CWM5.zip
If not, you can read clearly this topic, thanks to CF to solve your problem:

If you have use PC odin to get LA4(and seems you did it), then simply, you have lost Root + CWM.
N LA4 is not necessary b4 Rocket ROM.
If above is true, you have just option to downgrade n Re root + CWM
Oh, didnt see the replies before i edited it, i solved the problem just like u described in ur post taycuong76
didnt scroll down enough to see that there was a CF-root for the LA4
thx anyway love to see the great support and that everybody wants to help even if there already is a thread about this. Just makes me more satisfied with switching from the toy iphone 4 to a real phone
Got rocketrom on my phone now, just amazing that there are so many custom ROMs to choose from
Thanks again guys
EDIT: "unEdited" my thread for anybody that find themselves in this sitauation
Just dont panic like i did
