I have been searching all afternoon, here is my problem. I had issues with some radio and SPL files last night (won't verify), and someone pointed me to a newer version but they are *.img files...I've never loaded anything but the recovery partition as an image file.
I looked this up and it says it needs "fastboot"
90% of the searches tell you how to install the SDK (even though fastboot is in the title, it's never mentioned in the body of the post), thanks, I have the SDK since I got my phone, but I don't have or see fastboot anywhere in it.
So my newbie question is how do I fastboot the *.img files onto my G1, since I don't see fastboot on SDK or on my phone?
Second newbie question, when I see the directions for installing they list the fastboot commands serially...so do I have to reboot after each img load or can I just load one then the next without rebooting/power cycle?
Thanks.

1.turn off the phone . open fastboot on the phone by holding back and power.
2.open up command prompt with admin priveliges. use the command "cd" for main android sdk directory, wherever you have it.
3. once found the directory, for me its X:/AndroidSDK/ , refer to the tools by adding the /tools like so: X:/AndroidSDK/tools
.
4. enable fastboot devices by typing the command fastboot devices
5. use the command fastboot flash *****.img.
if you are flahing new radio and hboot's. PLEASE flash the radio first!!!! and with the second question, you can flash the next img right after, just make sure you do the correct ones first.
I'm still missing something here
Back+power = rainbow screen, now I'm stuck because my ADB command fails here, no device detected (it works on normal power up, or even in recovery mode).
So my issue is with item #2, how can I "open up a command prompt" from the rainbow screen? gonna search on that though.
Is this a hack that I missed?
I DO see fastboot in my tools directory.
ooops androids on skateboards are gone
Think I found it....
"...you need to replace your bootloader with an unlocked G1 bootloader that has fastboot enabled..."
So my old build had it, and my new one (1.6 rooted) does not....so need a known good ROM with fastboot enabled.
haha, that only took me all day.
Help please, need a ROM that supports Fastboot
Yes, I'm an idiot...while there is tons of information here, even tutorials and walkthroughs, the amount of time I had to spend searching and reading to find what I wanted is phenomenal. I have been out of it for a while, and it's gotten much worse in many ways and better in some ways too.
What I don't understand is why so many ROM's fail to load still. The tools and processes are much better understood now but many ROM's fail at loading, at least that I tried.
There are also tons of dead links to ROM's, frustrating for someone not familiar with the site.
I want a simple fast ROM, FAST = 3.0 MFLOPS+ on LINPACK, that is reasonably stable...not having much luck so far.
THANKS! for all the help.

Tried to install Cyanogen 6.1... It failed.
From there the device booted up normally on a fresh start, but I tried to recover my backup and that is where everything got all messed up.
Im stuck on the G1 screen.
Ive gotten it to the fastboot mode and Im downloading what I think I need to get my phone working again. Ive downloaded the Andriod 1.6 image from the HTC website. Do I need the recovery? I just want 1.6 until I have time to try and get Cyanogen installed.
Im currently installing JDK for the Andriod SDK.
Am I headed in the right direction?
I was using ROM Manager with Clockwork Mod. My old ROM was Super E... Not sure what version, but it was Andriod 2.1

And spl? Do u have and eng spl? (S-off). If so u could fastboot erase your system and try to flash the rom through recovery. And fastboot flash a recovery of your choice first. Have u tried going on ezterry's thread with the new radio/spl and going that route?
Not sure what the version of the SPL is, but I know it is off. I'll check his thread out and give it a try. I might end up finding someone who actually knows what they are doing, or buying the Nexus S.
Ok. If u follow his thread exactly and fastboot flash the radio/recovery/spl u should end up with everything as described in the thread and be able to move on with cm6 with appropriate kernel. Alternatively u could boot into fastboot and open up your terminal on your computer and type in code to fastboot recovery of your choice (after it's download and put in sdk/tools folder on your PC) he has amonra link in his thread for download . Then type fastboot erase system -w (hit enter). When it's done type fastboot erase boot (hit enter). Then power down. Power back into recovery with the rom on your sdcard and flash away.
That is actually what I'm trying to do. Its just about my only option at this point.
Im having problems getting everything set up correctly though.
What are u having problems setting up?
I installed Andriod SDK, seems to be working.
Downloaded the drivers, which seems to have stopped my computer from seeing the phone.
I downloaded the Fastboot.exe, tried to run it but it cannot find ADB.dll ( Pretty sure thats what it was.)
I was basically following the steps on the cyanogen wiki.
When I have some time, I will try the Fastboot for noobs guide.
I think I followed a guide in androiddevelopers.com or something like that. If I find it again ill post a link. I don't think I ran a fastboot exe file though. Just have it in my androidsdk/tools folder. Added the variable to my paths and was good to go. Not at my PC currently though.
Edit: developer.android.com/sdk/
I believe is what I followed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
Following this for fastboot.
I cannot update anything. Home + power doesnt do anything.
Only thing I can access is fastboot mode.
Fortunately my radio is up to date, so I assume my SPL is as well.
Going to attempt to try the fastboot step, once I can get the SDK working correctly
edit: I knew if I spent enough time working at it that I'd get it working.
Only problem now is getting my device to be listed.
Edit2: at first when I entered fastboot mode, I would get the "Add new hardware" for the device "Andriod 1.0"
It now says "andriod bootloader interface"
I feel like I'm so close. I'm going to keep playing with it, but what can I do to get my device listed when I type the command "Fastboot devices"?
Edit 3: Awesome. I got fastboot to work and my phone is recognized. Only problem now is getting my SD card reader to work so I can put the proper files on
Final edit: MY phone is killing SD cards for some reason. Don't know what to do
Got the SD cards to work, for some reason though, some of the commands are not working. When I type fastboot shell, I just get the usage doc.
When I do fastboot update, I get the following: error: failed to load 'update.zip'
What are u trying to do in fastboot?

Well, I fixed my phone. Back to its original state.
I guess my only question at this point my only question is if I switch to Cyanogen 6.1, will it be less buggy than my Super E ROM?
For anyone wondering, Holding home + end for about 25 seconds is what I did. From there I just went to nandriod and tried to recover the same backup that gave me the problem.
I would say no. It will not be less buggy. U can always flash and try different roms though for experiment sake. Glad u got it back up

Hello today I attempted something that I thought was going to be a quick video tutorial fix. I tried Rooting my HTC one. I followed several guides and read many posts I easily managed to unlock my phone. The problem started when trying to flash the recovery onto my phone, first I tried through commands: fastboot flash recovery and I received the error (FAILED data transfer failure unknown error) I've searched for 7 hours looking for a fix. Since I cant root reverting back to a fresh install is impossible, I cant find a RUU for telus, (I live in canada). I just don't know what to do, when I try to flash anything my bootloader freeze, drivers are up to date, tried restarting computer. Used One_M7_All-In-One_Kit_v1.0 doesn't work. This is a nightmare come save me before I jump off a cliff.
EDIT: What I did from beginning was followed this video "How to Root the HTC One-FlamingArio"to the point where you try and flash the recovery fastboot. That didnt work so after trying to fix that I tried How To Root HTC One & Unlock Bootloader - Easiest & User Friendly- The smoking Android ( super boot a 1 click install) that made my bootloader screen turn to tampered. after that I tried One_M7_All-In-One_Kit_v1.
Note in all in one kit I did erase cache and standard recovery works fine, I've re-installed it may times.
Cant post links yet but I gave video names.
EDIT: when I do the cmd fastboot devices my device shows up when I do adb devices nothing shows up could this be part of the problem?
Thank you all for your help, I re-installed all the programs on my laptop and redid all the steps and it worked. Bye!
Try this in ABD fastboot erase cache then flash the recovery again i hope this helps:fingers-crossed:

Many people are looking for the Telus RUU.
Can you still access standard recovery? If so try reverting to factory settings (all data will be lost) and try to boot.
If you can get it to boot you should have more luck in trying to root your device.
I know that I had some issue's trying to get root on my device. But once I got S-off with revone, I was able to install root no problem.

Nice to see you sorted it
Assuming you have actually flashed a recovery image to your device, you will then need to push a ROM to your sd card so that you can flash it in recovery.
Just do the following:
1. I am guessing you have the HTC drivers installed on your PC.
2. Download the attached adb.zip and unzip it to a folder on your C drive and call the folder whatever you like.
3. Boot your device into recovery and plug it in to a powered USB port on your PC.
4. Navigate to the folder that you just created on your PC and copy your ROM zip into it. rename the ROM zip to 'rom.zip' to make life easy.
5. Inside the folder, press and hold the shift key and right click in a blank part of the window and select 'Open command window here' (screenshot attached).
6. Type 'adb push rom.zip /sdcard' (don't use the quote marks)
7. Press 'enter'
8. Once the zip has finished being pushed to your sdcard, you can reboot into recovery and then flash it as normal.
EDIT: That will teach me not to read to the very end of a post. I'll leave this here for someone else.
doesn't matter how I try to boot I go straight to:
[420] Fastboot mode started
which is promising but I can't seem to dig up what exactly to do next. I've found some references but they have all been in very broken English and thus are somewhat difficult for me to understand. considering my current situation I don't want to make anything worse because I didn't understand what someone was trying to say in their second language. this is in no way meant as a slam on them or their instructions, the only second language I sort of understand is ebonics so anyone who can communicate in another real language at any skill level is far beyond me in that area.
that's the bad news (for me anyway)
the good news is that I've got the USB drivers, ADB drivers, and fastboot installed on my desktop and if I plug in a usb to my phone it adds the following to the screen:
[520] --reset --
[530] --portchange --
[610] fastboot: processing commands
also, if I enter:
"fastboot reboot" from a command window on my desktop, it reboots the phone so I know I have some ability to interface with the device. I have a feeling that the problem is a corrupted recovery and from what I've read I believe I need to flash back to the stock recovery but the only instructions I've seen are too hard to read with confidence. i'm hoping someone can direct me to the appropriate file(s) and hopefully provide clear instructions for flashing that recovery using fastboot.
I would very much appreciate any help that is forthcoming.

Common fastboot commands here - http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Doc:_fastboot_intro
In your case you want - fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Replace recovery.img with the name of your image file, download TWRP from the link below, open the zip, extract the image file and use the command above to flash it. You should be able to get into recovery using the power on/volume down key sequence then.

you cant use the flash-all, you need to flash each part separately. ynzip the file, then flash each .img file sepately. btw, ive deleted the whole os before. if you already have twrp installed, it wouls be a much easier fix using twrp instead.

i dont remember the program i used on my laptop, maybe 7zip.
The file downloaded from Google has a second zip inside. Unzip twice with 7 zip. The system image is inside the embedded zip file.
I assume you have the SDK from Google... Place all image files in the platform tools folder. I rename the images boot, radio, system, etc. to simplify typing the commands when actually flashing the images. DO NOT add the, " .IMG" when renaming.
Then:
Fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.IMG
Fastboot reboot-boitloader
Then same for system, radio, data and cache with out the reboot line.
When all files are flashed then fastboot reboot and enjoy
My brains are exploding rn, idk what or how to do anything, maybe u will think I'm dumb but I don't know what u guys are saying, could anyone post full instructions on how I would do it
The ONLY thing that you need to revive your device is alive bootloader. Every OS has its bootloader, and it determines what to load before system loaded.
I guess you did that foolish things on recovery. Then it won't kill itself of bootloader for sure.
Then there's always a chance. Try to boot into bootloader and switch it to fastboot mode.
Just flash stock rom image provided by google as described above.
You need to do some googling about fastboot and/or look for the beginners guide posted in the forums. You could use wugsfresh toolkit as well. I'm not being a douche not linking them,I'm to stoned
Google anything you don't understand

Do you know if your bootloader is unlocked?
You say you're an Apple guy - are you using a Mac? If you have access to a Windows machine I suggest you install Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit and use the "Install & test drivers" button to set up the required drivers to connect your Nexus 6 to the computer. The walkthrough is comprehensive and extraordinarily simple - brilliant piece of programming. There is no Mac version.
Download the factory image (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en#shamu image MMB29K).
Find the Fastboot/ADB programs on the web (I may have used the Minimal ADB & Fastboot tool, I can't remember exactly) and create a directory containing both programs plus their associated bits and pieces. I recommend making the path as simple as possible - e.g. C:\ADB for ease of navigation ( see below).
(While reading up on this, I came across this, which you may find useful - http://www.android.gs/install-set-up-adb-mac-os-x-linux/).
Unzip everything in the factory image, including the zip inside the zip as Larzzzz82 said, then copy the unzipped *.img files into the ADB Fastboot directory.
Boot your N6 into bootloader.
Open a CMD window and navigate to the ADB directory.
To check that you're connected, type (you don't need caps, this is just to make it clearer) FASTBOOT DEVICES. You should see something like "djdgkdjhgkdfj device" in response; if it's blank you're not connected - go through the driver setup again to see what you've missed.
Once you're successfully connected, you can install your new image following the instructions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/stuck-launching-flashstock-bat-t3244470
I did ask for an expert to run a more experienced eye over them to correct any errors or to remove any pointless reboot commands, but nobody did either, so I guess they're ok. It's what I did and it worked for me. I've just noticed that it includes a line "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" which you can ignore for the moment - though you may want to do this later when you have a working device.
Come back if you want any clarifications.
Happy new year (and, I hope, device...)

Use Wugfresh's Nexus root and toolkit to restore it. Pretty easy.
@wolfen69 - duck and take cover...
I was going to suggest exactly that, since I'm a big fan of Wugfresh's NRT, but recommending it doesn't half bring down the flak... that's why I recommended using it initially at least to get the PC set up properly to connect and then get on with learning how to do it manually.
Personally in this situation using the NRT is exactly what I'd do myself. But now I'm retiring to my bunker for a while.

That's OK if people disagree with my recommendation. People are entitled to their opinions.
I tried for hours to do it the manual way and could never get it to work. And I'm a person who is VERY tech savvy. I had a computer repair business and have written advanced linux tutorials. I gave up and started using wugfresh. Has worked great for me. Others are free to do what works for them.
If you dont flash the images through the recovery mode then how do you flash it? I cant flash through command because the phone dosent have usb debugging enabled and its not in developer mode. I tried the nexus root toolkit as well and that didnt work either. Plz i need help!
So how much of my instruction did you follow? What exactly have you tried? Step by step. If you're vague then we can't help you. Error messages?
How did you delete the OS if your phone isn't unlocked?
Sent from my DROID Turbo 2
So i put it in recovery mode and when i tried resetting to factory i accidentally clicked advanced wipe and deleted everything so now its stuck in the boot loop. What i have tried was i downloaded the img file 6.0 shamu from googles site and drag and dropped on internal memory with my pc. Then in recovery mode i went mount and selected the img and it said error.
I bought a Nexus6 about a month ago. I wasn't planning on rooting it, but I have rooted a number of devices in the past so am reasonably comfortable doing that. I bought the phone from Amazon but I am on T-mobile's network.
After I fired up the phone and used it for a while, I got a message asking me to update to software version 5.1. When I go to the about on my phone, it says it has 5.1.1 but it says the build number is LRX22C which when I looked that up indicates that it is actually running 5.0. I told the phone to update, but it fails every time (android guy with the red exclamation mark over his belly). I did a factory reset and repartition and still the same thing. At this point, I figured I would just root and and force it to 6.0.
After installing drivers, ADB-tools, etc. my computer recognizes the phone. When I connect by a USB cable and the phone is on, it shows under devices. However, when I boot into fastboot mode, my laptop no longer recognizes the Nexus. The fastboot screen shows that the phone is unlocked, and it recognizes that it is getting power from the laptop. However, it says to connect via usb. Running the command prompt and using SDK-Windows, when I type fastboot devices it shows nothing.
Interestingly, I see that Superuser is on the phone and working. I don't think I rooted my phone at any point in the process of trying a lot of different things, although anything is possible. I have been thrashing around a bit trying to get this to get the phone on 6.0 so might have rooted accidentally although I doubt it. My suspicion is that I was given a previously used phone that someone rooted and returned.
Any suggestions/help out there?

It shows Other Devices > Fastboot Shamu S with the yellow triangle and exclamation point. I have motorolla device manager installed and I thought that had my drivers covered but perhaps not?
These devices do have driver issues. Try downloading the correct drivers and it should fix it, a lot of people have had similar issues.
@LSquared
Download Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit. It has a long button on the top right "Install and test drivers" - a really helpful guide in clearing out any old drivers and installing and testing the new ones.
It can also perform many other functions, but after a lot of persuasion(!) in these forums I decided that learning to do everything manually is not only simple but safer, because you know at exactly which point an error occurs. The driver setup part of NRT is a brilliant help in setting your PC up once to get you started.
If you don't have anything valuable on your device yet, install the MMB29S factory image, then TWRP, and from there install SuperSU v2.66, and you're as up to date as you can possibly be.
Spend a few hours doing research and you will be fine. Just stay away from root kits. They only make things worse and lessen the experience of owning a nexus. As well as stops any help you may get in the forums as no one will help those that use the root kits.
Thanks for all the help/suggestions. After a lot of poking around, I realized that I had the right driver hiding in a folder (inside SDK I think) and had to just manually point to them and that got rid of the connection issue. Now I seem to be stuck on flashing the latest stock OS. I have been trying to flash via Minimal ADB and Fastboot but it isn't pushing the image there correctly. I don't want a custom rom, just stock 6.0.

I just downloaded Android SDK so it has the latest files (I believe). Android SDK doesn't connect to the phone, it just keeps an updated set of firmwear, right? If I am not using minimal ADB and fastboot to push files from my computer to the phone, what program should I be using? It seemed a lot easier on my older phones that had a micro SD card because I could just drop the new Rom on there and install that from the bootloader.

That guide is great and helped me get the bootloader unlocked and the phone rooted. I downloaded the image file just fine, but when I go to run root-windows.bat I get the message "fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command." I am guessing I don't have some file in the right location?

The flash_all scripts don't work. Flash each img file individually, after you've extracted them all from the ,zip.
Yup, flash the .img files individually, the batch command doesn't work.
Here's the guide I always use: How to manually flash img files to your Nexus device
Basically, with phone connected to computer and booted to the bootloader, open Command Prompt window, change directories to where your sdk/platform-tools directory is with your Shamu files, then:
Code:
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
Code:
fastboot flash bootloader "name of bootloader"
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Code:
fastboot flash radio "name of radio"
fastboot reboot-bootloader
NOTE: You'll have to extract the files from the image-shamu-mmb29s.zip file in this case to flash MMB29S.
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
Code:
fastboot reboot
I'm aware, it may be overkill, but I've never had any issues performing all of these steps to get back to 100% stock so if it "isn't broken, don't fix it". Also this will wipe your internal SD area, so any files you want to save you should save them prior to starting this.
Good summary!

To avoid wiping your internal user storage, just skip the step that flashes userdata img (and the step at the beginning that erases usedata)
