Hey guys,
I would like to make your situation easier, so you don't have to read like 1000s of forum threads to get information I'm giving you here. These are the issues I faced with my incredible s, and the so called solutions.
The device:
Stock EU htc incredible s/ htc droid incredible 2 on Gingerbread. NO software mods at all.
According to my knowledge the same applies to the htc desire s and the htc desire hd as well. Most of these problems come forward after updating to gingerbread. If you are still on froyo, I wouldn' recommend updating.
1st issue. High standby drain.
According to Currentwidget and battery monitor my incredible s doesn't have lower battery consumption in standby than 38Mah.
Solution:
Drain readings are corrupted, there is a bug involved.
In reality You only have around 5-6Mah drain in standby.
Proof.
Left phone in standby for 2 days without messing with it, ended up with 40% left.
So if you have a minimum of 40Mah drain for two days. (48hours x40Ma=1920Ma) The battery's capacity is no more than 1500Ma, so it's obvious that standby drain readings are corrupted.
IGNORE drain readings!
2nd issue: You take it off the charger and it's 95%
Some say that phone charges till 100% than shuts charging down till battery reaches 90%, than charging starts again.
Some say our Lithium battery cannot get charged till 100% which is normal. This is the reason our device doesn't show % in notification area.
Solution: Ignore battery monitor, use inbuilt battery charge indicator, and be happy.
If you want to test battery life, start test at 90% and your test won't be corrupted.
3rd issue: Dialer using too much battery.
This might to be a bug as well. Still to be confirmed. The dialer doesn't use that much of power it only gets stuck in built in battery use indicator giving false drain data.
Some say it doesn't stop using proximity sensor after being in a call, hence the big drain. Incredible s's proximity sensor is visible during call, check it in the dark, it blinks. After call it stays inactive. So the dialer using it 24/7 seems to be a false statement.
4th issue: Declining calls in pocket.
When taking or declining a call, you swipe vertically on the screen. If you have your phone in your pocket with the screen facing your body, you can easily take or decline some calls when pulling out. This is more likely if you have a pocket made of thin material.
Solution: Put your phone in your pocket with the battery cover facing your leg. Don't worry about bumping into like a table corner and smashing your screen. Our gorilla glass is almost indestructible. Using a pouch or cover does the trick as well.
Not sure why htc is so obsessed with the vertical answer procedure. With horizontal swipe we wouldn't have this problem and users have been complaining about this since the desire came out.
5th Issue: Wifi disconnects when signal low, but still would be fine under froyo.
Connection gets disconnected when signal is 86db or lower.
This is a gingerbread related problem, htc cannot do anything about it.
No solution just yet.
For those who complain about battery life, I am on gingerbread with loads of apps installed and with very heavy use 3hours of display, wifi, skype, internet browsing I can use the phone for 12 hours. With moderate use min 2 days.
Battery saving tipps:
-Don't let google and htc sync. It uses lot of data and battery resources.(I don't like my sensitive data to be copied on their servers anyway.) Sync with your pc regularly.
- If u use data for e-mail and weather sync, use Gsm only mode, you don't need that much of speed for those, turn WCDMA on if u need it for skype, etc. Hspda and 3g are big battery killers.
-Everything on manual sync. There is a sync all widget in sense to use. U can hit it anytime you want to.
-No live wallpaper
-Hotspot uses excessive amount of battery. Use it on charger only.
-Screen light to be turned down. Use Screen filter app nighttime.
-Turn wifi and mobile data off when not in use, so phone can sleep properly. (wifi timeout app)
-Turn off wireless network positioning.
-Keep bluetooth off when not in use.
-Select short screen timeout like 15s.
-Screen on time is the main culprit in appalling battery life. Use your watch to check time rather than turning the screen on.
-If u struggle to find 3g or Hspda for data or network itself, change provider, because no matter what phone u have, u will have this problem. Try to find spots in your flat with better signal for data. Searching for network uses a lot of battery.
-Try to charge your phone from 0% overnight with the phone off for a couple of times (8-12hrs)
-When gps is on it doesn't mean that it uses battery. If you see the sattelite icon blinking or just on, that's when it uses battery, a significant amount of battery.
-Consider buying the official extended battery available in US (droid incredible 2 2100Mah), coming to EU soon. I wouldn't recommend buying the unofficial ones just now.
Obviously if you apply some of these battery life will be better. If you apply all of them, battery life will be exceptional.
Hope I helped.
Have fun guys!
Hi!
Thanks you for this! I buy my incredible s a couple of days ago, upgraded instantley. I met most of these problems and now I am happyer with my phone knowing these.
Could you give link to the battery you wrote about???
i appreciate what you're trying to do - but if you are going to follow all those steps you might as well have bought a nokia 3210
"Use your watch to check time rather than turning the screen on"
i mean.... really??
As I said, you don't have to follow all the steps.
You might face conditions when you need every drop of your juice, so it's good to know how to get the most out of your battery, isn't it?

It's for the droid incredible 2, but thats equivalent to Incredible s.
Sorry if this seems sarcastic, but if you're gonna buy a smartphone and turn everything that makes it a smartphone off, then save yourself a few hundred quid and buy a Nokia 1100
I use mine to sync everything and anything I want, and don't worry about it, as long as it lasts the day, which it does, I'm happy.

you misinterpreted what the op said. He is just stating what you could do if you found yourself in a situation where you had to maximize battery usage. Obviously most of us are around an outlet or usb plug most of the day so that we can charge the phone often.
Thanks for the info OP. I just wish that current widget would show us the right info. Or some other app :/
Thanks for the info OP. My buddy has had endless problems with his Incredible. I'll Chrome to Phone this thread and send it to him!

Its not the apps fault, the phone just reports wrong. So any other app should also fail.
@superman, perhaps a faulty app is causing the problems
Wifi issue should be resolved with the ota update.
However there is a network at my workplace which I couldn't connect to. I guess it is some kind of wifi repeater, it doesn't look like an actual wifi router. There is no cable connecting to it. Apparently I can connect but I get 0 signal next to it. Others can connect with full signal. Any idea?

the glass on my phone broke on the third day falling face down from a a height of about 1 feet. so is it a gorilla glass or normal?
Not trying to be rude or anything but thought some other members would find what I have to say useful (I hope!)
Not everything you say is true.

It is FAR from "almost" indestructible. Some people also say it's impossible to scratch it, yet mines been scratched (this AND nexus one) It's nice glass but indestructible? I think not, not even "almost"

Live wall papers do eat your battery, but it's almost close to nothing. I've read that whatever uses more than 2% of your battery will be displayed in the "battery usage" I've used live wallpapers and it's never even shown that. (I think it also depends on what kind of wallpapers you use though.. let's say you had one that interacted with you) perhaps that might drain more battery.. but who turns on their phone to play with their wallpaper lmao
I've tested and disabling google sync barely makes a diff. I also don't think it uses a lot of data. I don't completely disagree with you though, manual sync is probably a better idea. On the other hand, I don't really think Hspda/3g are big battery killers, I notice that if you use the browser, the battery drops quick. Let's say you used "gsm" / "2G" and the webpage takes longer to load whereas 3G would have it loaded within seconds.. Which would waste more battery? I'm not 100% sure but I'd say just keep 3G and turn on 2G if you're not doing anything else with your phone. To my surprise, 2G is horribly slow.

Completely false. This is only a cover on top of your screen. It doesn't change the power being outputted to the screen. If you look at what RogerProdacter is making, you'll see that he's trying to modify the phones brightness output.

Disagree again. It's really up to user though, that's insane. I'd be pissed if my phone kept shutting off in 15s! What you can actually do is turn off the phone yourself or get something like Lock screen widget which instantly turns off your screen. Two reasons it's better - You don't have to worry about the timeout - you shut it off sooner than 15s.

that's crazy.. You're saying that for us to check battery life/uptime we should use our watches? That's insane! That's a lot of effort to keep track JUST for your battery. Is it worth it? (I wouldn't think so.. but it's up to whoever uses it lol..)

I don't know what kind of world you live in, sounds way too good to be true. Just instantly change providers eh? Where I live.. that's not really easy to do. I'm sure most people getting cell phones would have enough common sense to pick something that works in their area anyway.
Hi,
I've tried to search for a solution but haven't find any. You know there is a message when battery temperature gets too high then charging stops. The popup message is very very annoying: I use navigation and blackbox while driving. And when this message comes I have to press OK, and 5 secs after it appears again... very very annoying.
I agree with not to overheat the battery but why not just stop charging without this message? Is there any trick to eliminate this? In summer time and sunny days this msg comes very often. I have to place a piece of plastic to car's ventillation hole to minimizing the chance of this msg.
I don't care if it's charging or not, I just don't want to see this msg.
Please help if you have any idea!
I'm on stock JVR now, rooted, underclocked @ 800MHz. Other ROMs (CM7, MIUI) just stops carging without any message.
Had the same problem awhile back, reflash jvr, and dont use undervolting/overclocking programs/kernels.

+1 Dont OC/uV too much.
My apologies guys, but please read: I don't use OC/UV, I use stock and underclock.
With normal use and simple charging everything goes well but under heavy use I get this message while charging. Under heavy use I mean navigation, blackbox, and of course phone is at the windscreen while heated by the sun. The phone's glass is hot. It's normal of course because I use CPU intensive apps.
I repeat: I don't care about charging or not, just want this message to be disappeared.
I just unplug mine from the charger when this pops up. It happens with me in exactly the same circumstances. GPS navigation, dashboard of the car, and bright sunny days, it's not an overclock issue, just high ambient heat source, high cpu usage plus charging.
I also find it's aggravated by the silicon skin case I use.

Yes I'm doing the same as workaround. But other ROMs just stop charging and continue when phone cooled down without any message. It would be very nice to just remove this message by a script or editing a script or something else (I'm not a dev just an "I-like-to-hack" power user).
DO your devices get extremely hot at all? Mine did ,to the point that it was to too hot to handle, im surprised the dam thing did not exploded.
As for removing the message i have not a clue how too, i do know however that is is triggered by the thermal sensors.
I can also recall this happening with my windows mobile devices a few times, this happened when the gps services were stuck working in the background.
In all occasions the only fix a found was to re flash the rom.

No, it's not too hot, it's just warm enough. I don't say it's abnormal because in direct sunlight while charging and using cpu intensive apps it's normal. Just try to figure out is there any chance to do this all without this message...
Ok, I'll wait for someone who knows something or know someone who has seen someone who know something...
Referring to other threads I'm not the only one with this problem and not SGS is the only one with this problem.
While this message is not needed and has no function it has to be eliminated some way because tapping OK is very disturbing while driving/navigating/etc...
Script? Kernel patch/hack? Something? If some ROMs can do it (like MIUI) there must be a way to have it disappeared...
I had the same problem with a Galaxy S II today. First, it began to warn me that was starting charging. And 1 second later it warn the Power Saving was activated and the charger was turned off.
Later, it said 'Charging pause. Voltage too high'. When I've tried to power off the phone, it was powering on by itself.
During the morning, I've used the phone to consume battery. At the afternoon, I put it via USB cable and it seems the problem is solved, for now.
I'm using the ICS ROM beta, by Samsung, have some days.
I dunno whether it is a battery problem or what but I got a brand new battery
coz the last battery was too bad but the new battery also sucks.
I was wondering if it was cause of the ROM and kernel so
I switched to stock rom for trial purpose and still I got juz like barely 7 hours of juice....
with juz some files thru bluetooth and half an hour or so of texting....
so what could be causing the problem?
Here's the battery stats...

I'm not really an expert on this... but I'll try!
First, data - depending on how often your apps that use data refresh, it may be killing your battery because they are always updating in the background
Next, apps - depending on how many are open, and trying to retrieve info or a responce, this may be killing your battery life
Another, backlight brightness - I would say half brightness looks almost the same as full brightness, so turn that down too. Another thing you can do is make sure that your phone times out so the screen is always on and sucking the life out of your battery
Plus, bluetooth and wifi - turn those off when you aren't using them! They turn on in a couple of seconds so there is no use in just leaving them on and draining your battery.
Lastly, I dunno what "kik" is (the app running in the corner of the status bar) but it may be using battery too (probably not because it isn't in the list of the battery use so I don't think that's it.
Anyways, in short, possibly shut off the data if you don't always use it (you don't have to tho ), go into the settings of apps, and get the refresh rate at a longer period of time (so they aren't always using data), kill any open apps if you can with an app manager, turn down the brightness of backlight, change the time it takes to shut off the backlight, and shut off the bluetooth and wifi when you aren't using it.
Unfortunatley the battery life on the Ace is far from the best, if anything it's terrible, but other than that I have very few issues with the phone.
Well... That's my two cents. Hopefully it helps, but if not, search around on the forums and see if you can find any other solutions. :fingers-crossed: I'm not the expert, but I'm trying to throw ideas out there. Good luck
Running background processes is a major battery kill. I used to get 12h+ on 3G with Stocklite V6. Never used heavy apps though. Just Textplus, Opera Mini to check fb sometimes and WhatsApp whenever someone talked to me. Light usage.
How much the battery lasts depends on the user completely.

First of all thnx for taking this much time out....
It's rlly helpful...
but
1. My data usage is barely 10 mb per day....
and no wifi and mearge usage of bluetooth....
2. Background apps;
only adw and one or two others...
and Kik is juz like whatsapp, a messaging app....
and it's quite lightweight, been using it since uite some time...
3. Backlight is at an always 25% and screen timeout 30 secs....
so juz wanna know if there's a possibility of some hardware fault......
coz I've tried most things possible to take out the software fault if any....

Wait, i just forgot!...
I get this too sometimes, but what might help is if you reset your battery stats! I have to do this too because I found that after a half an hour after unplugging my phone with no use I lost 10% battery life, for no apparant reason. Search in the Play Store "BatteryCalibration". All you have to do is charge your phone to 100%, and tap the button . You usually have to do this after flashing a new ROM, because you might not flash it at 100% battery life and the stats go from there. So I would say, try it and see what happens.
Now... If not... The only other suggestion I have is if you find a battery booster app such as "Juice Defender" from the Play Store. I tried using it, but didn't see a huge difference (I don't have data, so I just keep it off), probably because I barely use my phone. I've also heard some thing about a script called "v6 Super Charger" (I've only heard of it, please search it if you want to know more because I sure don't ). Aparantly it boosts battery as well, but no promises haha.
If you are really desperate for better battery life, I would say switch to 2g service in the settings. Other than that.... I'm out for now
Hopefully this might help you out as well, but other than that the Ace is not well known for a good battery. But that's a mid range phone for you (but the Ace ain't no slouch either)
Anyway, goodluck!
-edit----------
Ok, so after looking around a little, I found a very interesting thread about Lithium-Ion batteries! Really cool and really worth the read! I learned quite a bit. Hopefully this answers any additional questions that I wasn't able to answer!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=669497
Try also eliminating any widgets or live wallpapers that you may have running. These might keep the processor running at a higher speed then neccessary, but no promises.... Plus I already mentioned closing apps you don't need (so this is pretty much the same woops) and you might have done it already.
The biggest thing to remeber is that you have to sacrifice performance for the best battery life. This may go as far as underclocking your maximum CPU speed, but this might cause some lagging especially at the startup. I think that this should be a last resort to be honest, because you still want to use a phone, and not a laggy device that you are trying to conserve as much battery as possible.
I also heard something about the motherboard possibly having a hardware fault in it causing excess discharge... But... I will need to do a little more searching to see if I can figure this out for you!
The other possiblity is that you get a power bank... But that just adds to what you have to pack around, so this is probably another last resort, but it's all up to you.

Hello Everyone! My phone has been wonky and I gotta know why
SO my N6 likes to shut off in the middle of doing something, most notably using google maps and the camera, I did some searching and someone suggested its related to the phone using apps that require location (Google Maps GPS / Google Camera Save Location Option), but there wasn't much input on that thread. Have any of you encountered anything like this yourselves? My phone would whir after opening Maps or after taking a picture from Camera (the whir sounds like its coming from near the top part of the phone btw) and then it would shut off, anyone have any clues as to what's the problem?
Yup same here for a long time. It's not related to location.
It's definitely something with voltage and battery.
I'm compiling my kernel and I've tried many things.
1/ Bcl needs to be on.
2/It's happening only on high cpu load. And so with camera and gps active.
Because those will use more voltage from our poor Motorola battery.
Using os monitor I've see my battery go to 3800mv from 3500 without big problem but clearly below 3600 there's a chance for the phone to shut down as you describe the thing.
Bcl start limiting and hotpluging core when battery reach 3800mv.
The default value is 1.9 ghz
But on stock kernel the phone is limited at 1.7. I think it's mpdecision and/or thermal that doing this. But I'm not sure.
Anyway nexus 6 is not made to handle 4 cores at the same time on low battery. + camera gps Bluetooth etc...
So voltage can drop to 3800mv to 3600 and then go back to 3800 because there's voltage work on kernel and rom side to prevent those things.
For exemple I've see my phone after unlocking it. Coming back to home. Have 3500mv and then after one minute. Come back to 3700.
So maybe WiFi and cpu was using the maximum voltage they could to sync then when job was over. Go back to a normal voltage use.
Not every phone are affected.
Cpu binning level is important i think.
Mine is 7.
0 use the maximum voltage and 15 the minimum.
I've use a pvs 5 phone and problem was the same with my kernel. So I've changed some stuff and it worked.
So for me my battery is bugged. I mean on low mv battery send bad info and doesn't have enough juice.
I've try rma my phone but Google send me a refurbish phone (the pvs5 one) which have screen burning on it. Yes they send me phone with a navbar stuck....
So I've send them back and I'm planning to change the battery myself
In the hope it solve the problem.
Also my turbo charger make a weird noise when phone battery is full. So maybe my charger have always be bugged and broke the battery in some way.
I'm still trying to understand this. But it's what I've test and understand from this. More or less because I've probably forgot something in there

You can try https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwCC2VJYgCavbHEwMk9CSFR4Snc
this is the version of my kernel i use (it says beta because it's not yet release, don't worry it will not break anything)
Make a backup of /system /data /cache /boot through twrp and flash the zip file
default settings will normaly make your phone not shut off. i've just go into 29% without problem
i can ear a noise from top speaker sometimes but i just stop touching the phone and it go back to normal.
Like i said above i still think a need a new battery
also i've see some users report a same problem on 6p after nougat update maybe we're on something
General tips I can think of are:
Use black theme on display settings,
greenify doze setting using adb.
Any suggestions just post below.

I take it you mean non-root?
- Brightness!!!!
- Apps running in the background and preventing phone from sleeping permission; Downlaod Shizuku Manager and App Ops from the Play Store, run the script via adb and limit the apps you don't want to have those permissions. Instant messaging: Don't limit run in background
- Did I mention brightness!?!?
- I don't do this one, but don't charge your phone past 80%. This is more of a long term battery saver, as it will cause less damage to the battery. Also don't keep your phone plugged in overnight. (I don't leave mine in)
- Disable radios while not in use. I never use NFC or nearby device scanning, I turn those off. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are never on while not in use. You'll get in the habit of turning them off it you start.

Leaving the phone plugged in all night wont do any damage to the battery. Once charged the current to the battery is cut off except for when it needs trickle charging throughout the night, the power used by the phone will then come from the wall adapter. But if you dont want to charge your phone all of the way, then thats when you dont leave it plugged in all night unless you have a circuit to disconnect power at a certain battery percentage. Oh man that gives me an idea.
I should make a small circuit thats linked via bluetooth to an app, so pretty much a power adapter that you plug your phone into, but once you reach a certain percentage, the phone tells the adapter to cut power and only turn on to get it back up to that certain percentage.
Okay that was really side tracked.
Back to the post.
Like Craz said, brightness and radios.
If you are rooted, download KA or EXKM and underclock your cpu, thatll help out a bit, also if rooted you could try a custom kernel
Root:
Force Doze
Naptime
Greenify
Custom kernel
CPU underclock
Use tasker to limit cpu speed when screen off or in certain apps
Non Root:
Dark themes
Lower brightness
Make sure apps arent running in the background that use a lot of power
Disable location services
Disable radios unless in use (tasker helps especially with root)
If you plan to have your phone for over a year or two, then the charge limits, but capacity wont change much within the first few hundred cycles
Use Wifi as much as possible (cell uses more power)
Disable screen off gestures
Make sure doze and advanced optimizations are enabled
Tips for better battery life.
And a lot of common sense.

yes it will on many cases, but I can't tell with the OP5. Is the circuit will cut-off the battery from the phone to avoid drain? If yes, in that case, it won't hurt significantly the battery.
In general , what can hurt li based batteries : time, heat and numbers of time of electrons changing direction.
Having the phone plugged in, every X time the % will drop, and the charging circuit will trigger the battery.
As I said, can't tell how op5 is working, and it probably be minimal anyway. But technically it will reduce the capacity : http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
Heat : 20W charger, even if its a vooc, at one point the battery will get a high current load = heat, and chemical li-po arrangement changes.
Time : cant do nothing here, chemical arrangement will degrade, its a normal process for most battery, specially li based one.
But at the end, not much people would see any difference, since nowadays people changing their phone every 1-2 years, fck ridiculous...
Back to topic :
Pixel off apps , many of them on the play strore, can't tell which one is good or not.
Basically, it will turn off pixels on the screen.

i find if i turn off the wifi always scanning feature and also turn off keep wifi on during sleep saves battery. actually i keep all wifi off unless i'm currently using it. as already mentioned, location services off, since i keep phone on all the time i get data through that. i've experienced battery times up to 6 days if calls in&out are 10 or lower each day and each call no more than 3 min, i'm a firm believer in hello, just facts, goodbye. i know people that live life via a phone find that strange but they will die of brain cancer not me. my neighbor is on phone no less than 7 hours a day just bullsh*tting and he talks real funny, i think his brain is rotting already. check to see which apps run all the time and kill those you do not need. as mentioned, lower screen brightness. 90% of the time mine is a couple clicks from as low as it can be and it is fine. i'd do the dark thing but it f*cks with my eyes. keep all apps closed you are not presently using instead of loaded in background.

I can't really tell if you are joking about the brain cancer part or not. Some people might take you seriously

"While the new plots in themselves say nothing about any possible links between cell phones and brain tumors, they go a long way toward puncturing the argument offered by numerous public health officials and media outlets that such an association is highly unlikely because the overall incidence of brain tumors has remained relatively stable over the last number of years."

He had based part of his study on incorrect data also.

yes, i offered the link as a punchline to your comment about joking. however i do have a question about your comment,
"He had based part of his study on incorrect data also"
why didn't you include the part of the study and the incorrect data? because, when statement like this is made it is left to the reader to determine the part of the study and the incorrect data which may lead to misunderstandings.
