Hi,
I had earlier opened a thread regarding this issue. But that was having more than one query and was misleading.
I need to install Froyo JP6 (the official one - no custom ROMs). Currently I'm having JF3.
Kies is not working for me (The MTP application in the mobile opens up, but gets restarted while getting connected to kies, so kies is not recognizing my mobile).
How shall I install JP6 without Kies?
Is it possible to install from mobile itself? (like installing apk file?)
nandihno had told me to install using odin. But i couldn't find it in dev section. Can anybody provide me the link for odin foryo JP6?
Thanks in advance!
Install latest version of Kies - 1.5.3.10093_82.
You can go in setting and Upgrage..
Once the latest version is installed, go into Program Files - Samsung
Delete USD Drivers directory here.
Now go in Program Files - Samsung - Kies - USB Driver
Install the drivers from here.
Once the installation is complete, go to settings in SGS (Galaxy) and unmount Internal SD card.
Connect SGS using USB Key and wait till system detects your SGS.
Once it is done you can use Kies to upgrade to Froyo... However as of today Froyo is not out for India... though there are work around to fool Kies and still download, though I will suggest to wait...
thanks I will try this as well. Well this also work with my issue? I tried to upgrade my firmware using kies, but it failed because of some file missing. I installed kites again, and now it detects my phone when I connect it, but it never seems to make the connection
It just says that it is trying to connect and this goes on forever.
So now I cannot repair my firmware using kies. Can this solution help with that as well?

Same problem here. It detects my phone. But freezes in "connecting your device".
@shurdus - when this is happening (connecting ur device), did you notice your phone restarting the MTP application.
I mean, the MTP application will be displaying "installing kies" but after some time, it disappears and appears again in a fraction of a second..
I have to try the solution said by satyawali.
Another doubt - unmounting internal SD card will affect the data?

I have a similar problem. I just downloaded the newest version of Kies, but can't get Windows/Kies to recognize my phone. I unchecked "Automatically start monitoring for device..." and "Start Kies automatically..." in the Settings box, and I did the Driver Recovery and rebooted, all recommended in another thread. Still nothing. All I get is some very quick flashing of MTP Application and my home screen opening and closing. Then Windows (Win 7, 32 bit) tells me it couldn't do something and to contact the device manufacturer.
Have you found a solution?

I haven't found the solution yet.
I guess the only solution is to format the SD card and then try. But I'm not willing to do that So no froyo for me... If only there was an OTA or froyo installer it'd be great
1. Uninstall KIES
2. Uninstall "SAMSUNG USB Driver For Mobile Phones".
3. Reboot your PC
4. Brows to "Program Files" (windows 32bit) or "Program Files (x86)"(windows 64bit) and remove the folder "Samsung".
5. Run "regedit" from Command Prompt and look in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and delete the "Samsung" folder.
6. Right click your C-drive and choose "Properties", click "Disk Cleanup" and check "Temporary Files" and hit "OK".
7. Install KIES and reboot your PC.
8. When booted, don't start KIES yet, just connect the phone and let windows install the drivers for it, unplug the device when done, start KIES and connect the phone.
That should work out for you..
^ thanks. gonna try it now. Will let u know
@[Ramad] - even this didn't work.
The problem is in the phone - i can clearly see it. I guess, a factory reset will do it. Is there any backup software that can backup including the application data/caches ?
isn't there a download link for the new and original Froyo? there are too many pages and it's quite hard to find what you want (I've found Froyo but not the original one, I think, and I've found plenty of advices for kies but I don't want to do all that unistall-delete traces-install again, when there's a simpler way with odin)
Kies problem is related to the ammound of MP3's on your SGS!
Because MTP is a MP3 player connection protocol it's using some MTP Windows media player driver to connect. If you have all MP3 on an external SD card, just remove it and Kies will work fine. Otherwise remove or rename your MP3s to make it work.
Seriously this worked for me, credits to a user of some forum (can't find the post).
Force close all d launchers before connecting d phone to kies its very necessary step hope it will work
It's unbelievable... the best Android phone has the crappiest PC companion. Seems everyone has exactly the same problem with kies.
As far as I've read it's related to files with longer names stored inside the internal memory. Come on! The old Palm Hotsync didn't suffer from such stupid things!
I think we should start a global petition for Samsung to fix that. My wife has a 10 bucks nokia that has a far leaner/better/functional PC companion.
@nagash1979 - by saying remove it - u mean "all mp3/flac and media" in the external card?
@ srajoria - did that. In fact. uninstalled laucnher pro and then tried. no use.
@c3p9 - i don't think its a deal breaker for this phone. As there are alternatives for kies (like es file explorer for wireless transmission of files). But if only there was an OTA update, then no need of kies at all
@nagash1979 - i couldn't find any windows media player application running in the background. thanks anyway....
Finally I got the solution for the KIES problem.
I had recently downloaded winamp beta from android market. And when connected the phone in usb storage mode when winamp was open in PC and phone, my phone was detected as mass storage. And when I opened Kies, it also detected my phone (finally!), but asked me to connect to kies mode. I removed the cable and connected again in kies mode. And it worked like a charm! WOW!
But it's not working everytime!
Edit: The Mass Storage worked 4/10 times. Kies worked only once out of 10 tries. Everytime a alert message to turn off the SD card is popping up which is very irritating. Dunno how to fix that....
Atleast I was able to connect my phone with the PC using USB Mass Storage mode after a very long time - took the backup of all camera files
If you have latest version of Kies installed and drivers working and experiancing MTP crashing issue on phone then it is long file name issue.
To solve this, connect your phone in media mode and mount the card on system. Use attached utility and search long file names on phone and delete them.
Now connect Kies you should not get MTP issues.....
However this does mean this crappy software (Kies) will still detect your phone...
Try to use Antroid Manager will be satiafied. I have uaed it works fine over Wifi.

Ok, decided for the first time to try out Kies in an attempt to see if Froyo was available for me.
Well ffs, after 1hr I am for throwing the phone out of the nearest available window.
I am not a complete fool btw, as I previously owned windows phones and was a weekly flasher on XDA (in a rom sense and not a naked sense).
I have tried both methods described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758212
and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758429
Neither work for me.
Kies just keeps trying to connect, but with no joy.
I am running the latest version of Kies, and am lost as to how to proceed.
Are there any other working methods to get this piece of s**t working?
All advice is welcome.
Are you running any sort of launcher like awd or Pro? If so you must disable it before you connect.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
running launcher pro, however disabled it and was running TW whilst trying to connect to Kies (as per instructions).
set it to use TW (as you have done) then in Settings> About Phone> USB settings...select Kies
reboot the phone, wait for it to complete boot up. Have Kies started on the pc then plug the usb in
That should do it
Thanks for the replies, I tried this to the step and in Kies it just says:
Connecting the Device, please wait, and the bar keeps cycling back and forward.
Tbh, this is all I have ever got. *sigh*
Are you sure there is no application running in background blocking internal nor external sd card? Check all tasks, nothing should use sd cards, while trying to connect to Kies.

Hi Guys,
I had the same issue and I connected the usb cable to another usb port.
That pretty much solved it.
beside that I did disable LP+
Hope that helps

This is what works for me (on Windows 7 32-bit):
1. Select Kies USB mode on the phone, disable USB debugging
2. Exit all apps and stay on the TWLauncher Home Screen
3. Connect phone to the PC
4. Open Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager and check if the 'GT-I9000' appears in the list under 'Portable Devices' without an error icon (that exclamation mark thingy)
5. If 'GT-I9000' does not appear AT ALL, try another USB port. Also see step 7.
6. If 'GT-I9000' appears but with an exclamation mark in Device Manager, right-click > uninstall > refresh. You might need to do this more than once.
7. If instead of 'GT-I9000', you see 'MTP Device', do an 'Update Driver' process and in the wizard manually select location as '\Windows\Inf'
8. Once GT-I9000 does appear correctly in Device Manager, start Kies - it should work.
PS: I don't have a Windows machine around right now, so apologies in advance if I got some of the nomenclature wrong in the above steps.
Why are u using kies. If u want to upgrade just use Odin like everyone else. Kies is a piece of **** that gives ppl brain tumors and murders puppies like itunes

It sounds like you have the long file name extension problem. Basically, there are files on your sd card with extensions longer then three characters and this is what prevents Kies from initialising.
Mount your sd cards as mass storage and do a search for *.* This should expose the offending files. Delete them and recollect to the PC with Kies.
Tried all of the above with no luck :-(
Phone shows up as GT-I9000 fine with no errors, removed external sd card, and unmounted internal sd card, etc, etc.
How do I use Odin? Does it invalidate my warranty? Sick of this Kies sh1t.
Here's what I did:
1. Uninstall kies
2. Clean up registry using ccleaner or similar registry cleaner (kies doesn't clean up after itself ) and remove all kies registry junk
3. Reinstall kies
4. Reconnect your g
Hopefully it should work for you because it did for me.
Goodluck

Is it a win 7 64 issue? I could dual partician with xp?

I fully rooted my NC and installed a number of apps that work but now my NC wount mount to my computer as separate flash drives. How can i fix this problem? Did i do something wrong? Ill appreciate the help.
Funny, I just realized this happened on my NookColor as well - just got to the bottom of it though.
Somehow, my Windows box was recognizing the Android Composite ADB device twice, and this was somehow nuking the usb-storage mode. The fix was simple:
Make sure adb shell isn't running
Go into device manager, and uninstall both instances of "Android Composite ADB Interface" - I deleted the device drivers to be sure (Windows 7 option)
Unplug NookColor from USB
Plug it back in after a few seconds. Let Device manager do its thing. For me, it fails and gives me the 'Drivers not installed' caution symbol next to the "Nook" entry in the Device manager.
Rightclick on the Nook entry in Device Manager, then select 'update drivers.' Point it back at the original USB drivers that you used while rooting when prompted.
Wait for the system to do its thing, installing all the drivers - takes a good minute or so. Drives appear in your Explorer
(I had to unplug and replug before the computer would actually let me access CONTENT on the Nook and the SDcard - your experience may vary.)
Or you could just use adb to push/pull files.
You could - but I find it easier when my media directory (for instance) is just mounted as part of explorer.
Mine does the same thing. Tried your solution and it still don't work?
Plumbergeek -- I have found that sometimes the last installed APK (application) causes this fuss. Uninstall the last thing you added, reboot and try again. Sometimes I have to go back several applications to find the culprit. Once the offending APK is identified I then try to find an alternative application to install.
If you don't know how to uninstall applications, search the threads ... the answers are here. You can also install an application called Quick Uninstall. This app, though, usually will not delete/uninstall system applications.
Hope this helps!

Well, the last one was Auto Config Script so I'll just wipe it and start over.
I have the same problem and can't figure out how to fix this
Both drives are listed in Device manager as B&N Ebook USB Disk storage
but the won't mount in windows.
When connected to PC that wasn't use to root it driver installation will fail
and there is Unknow device listed in Device manager (Nook) and two B&N USB Drives
but they will not mount as well.
Did anyone found what causes this ?
Thanks
Never mind, got it,
you have to push the n button to get it in to USB mode.

That's strange... i've never heard of anyone having to do that before...
Anyone else need to do this to mount?
I've always had to unlock mine to get it to mount in Windows. I just thought that was normal... is it not?
Sent from my Nooted friend...
I was going crazy unable to mount the storage and this did it for me
I have no-lock installed so unlocking wasn't the problem for me.
This didn't help. I can't even find those in Device manager
I'm also stuck with this problem. I am on Linux and can see two drives listed as B&N Ebook Disk, with all the other properties "unknown". I can neither open the drives nor connect to them with adb. It says that there is no device connected when I try to connect with adb.
This problem only started after installing Honeycomb. I was able to connect to the device through USB just fine when I was on a normal-but-nooted os.
Drive letters appear in explorer, but still can't write to them
Hi, I have a variation on the problem... My ADB install is confirmed (via cmd line) and I have two new drive letters appear (I guess it's one for the nook's internal memory, the other for the micro SD card). However, when I try clicking on either letter, Windows pops up an error message saying "please insert card". If it helps, my device list ID's the nook as a "composite USB device", not as a "nook"... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Same issue. This is killing me.
Ok, I've had this phone for 2 months now. It's the 2.1 Eclair. It used to mount just fine, but now all it does is charge the phone when I attach the usb to the computer. I've eliminated the cord as the issue since my mom's captivate mounts just fine with it. I thought it was originally my computer, which is now Windows 7, but again my moms' captivate mounts just fine. It also won't mount to my other computer running XP. I've installed and uninstalled every samsung driver available but I still cant' get it mounted in either debugging mode or nondebugging mode. I also thought it might be a software issue since I had rooted the phone so I unrooted and did a hard reset. Still no mount! I want to get mounted, and not just by my wife!
At this point I would be happy to simply load apps via the sd card but I can't seem to successfully edit the settings.db file, either. Any help with mounting the phone or simply being able to load nonmarket apps via the sd card would be much appreciated.
Alternatively, here's a question to those much smarter than I. If I can't get the phone to mount via usb cable, how can you install a rom or nonmarket apps without attaching the usb cable?
Thanks!!
1. you can try to download a rom via wifi using internet browser. it will be stored in your \sdcard\download folder. also you need to download update.zip into your sdcard root folder.
2. shut down your phone and reboot into recovery, load the new recovery. (you may need to load twice)
3. flash the new rom by installing the zip file in your download folder.
sounds like it could be an driver prb i had same thing i belive went 2 samsung and got drivers reinstalled and phone mounted 2 pc with no troubles
I believe I found the issue.
Disable auto-sync.
Settings > Accounts and Sync > Deselect the auto-sync option.
My wifes phone had never been able to connect and mount via computer on the cable to the PC. Different PCs, different cables, everything. My phone always worked. First thing I ever did when reinstalling a new ROM was disable auto-sync. Soon as I disabled her auto-sync, the option to mount came right up.
Hope this helped.

*edit* I spoke too soon. Exchanging the phone tomorrow. It has other issues too...
Hi, I am on a Froyo and attempting to do my first rooting. I looked at the instructions on the thread superoneclick already but still confuse on some part.
When it says unmount the sd card before rooting, does that mean unmounting the external or internal or both the sd card?
Just open the app on ur pc (after u have extracted it out of the zip file), then turn on the usb debugging in the settings of ur phone and then connect ur phone to the pc and select Root on the SuperOneClick and let it do it's thing.
The "Make sure you DO NOT mount your SD card." just means that when u connect ur phone to the pc, do not tap the "USB connected, Select to copy files to/from your computer" on the pull down panel of ur phone.

Settings>Applications>check the box that says Unknown Sources
my phone does not have that box, at&t disabled it....
I've heard the official kk4 had the unknown option.
The offical kk4 does have "unknown source" after rooting with the kf1 and reflashing the leaked kk4 it's still there, atleast mine is.
