Hello everyone, I bought my hero on launch and used it until the 2.1 root was found.
I rooted the phone on 2.1 and installed Recovery ver: 1.5.2 and the rom the phone has is fresh hero 2.3.3(this was done before switching phones)
work asked for a blackberry and I had to retire the hero for a few months up until now.
What should I do with the phone in order to get the new roms installed? wipe it fully or unroot?
I was sort of a noob when I got the hero but I managed to root it and get the rom I wanted working, now that I've been gone I really don't remember much
any help is appreciated
fw ver: 2.1 update1
baseband 2.42.01.04.27
kernel: 2.6.29 bc0d2cff
buld: fresh rom 2.3.3 by flipz
First I would probably reacquaint yourself with the ins and outs of flashing and whatnot just to be safe.
Next I would update your recovery image. You can easily do this by downloading ROM Manager from the Market and select the Flash Recovery Image button. That will install ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.7 onto your phone.
Now that you have a newer recovery image, you want to download the ROM you want to install. Now that your ROM is downloaded and on your SD card, you want to backup any information and data you want saved. You can save app data with Titanium Backup from the Market. You may also want to enter recovery and do a nandroid just to be safe.
Now that you have your information backed up, enter your recovery and flash your new ROM. Enjoy!
I have an Old nandroid backup, stock 2.1 with just superuser, do I keep that one or wont it work with the new recovery image?
Thanks for the prompt reply
Forgot to ask, when flashing roms, do you still need to go into recovery and wipe before flashing a new rom? Thanks

Keep your nand. You can use it to update your profile/prl, and yes, you should wipe between rom flashes.

I have nexus one. This is my story. I had rooted my phone using universial android. I installed cyanogen mod and was a very happy user until I saw the MIUI Rom and then I flashed that. Then I saw that it was to unstable so I restored to a backup I made of cyanogen. After I started using cyanogen mod again it was very unstable and had random reboots and lots of force closes. So I just decided I was done with the rooting business so I was gonna use a passimg. Acsently I flashed the Korean passimg and I can't flash any of the other ones(except the frg33one because i cant update to frg83 after and lose root) So on the Korean Rom I rooted and installed clockworkmod. Then I noticed I couldn't install any custom rom(i tried CM6, CM6RC3,MIUI)and I kept getting errors. So while I was in clockwordmod restored one of my old stockrom backups before i had flashed any roms and it worked. But still when went to go and try and flash a rom it still gave me errors. But the most ANNNOYING thing of all is i would flash clockwordmod in rommanager than i would touch reboot to recovery. It worked. I got into clockwordmod but then when i would try and go back again a second time it wouldn't be there. It would be the stock android recovery and even when i would go to recovery though the bootloader it would still be stock recovery. I dont know what to do. As i said my bootloader isnt unlocked because i dont want to void my warrenty. my inital plan was if i ever needed to return this ting i could just i could just run a passimg and restore to to stock everything and there would be no traces. If i have to return my phone it would have to be last resort because I live in Canada and I would have to play ridiculous duties and taxes on it. Now i just want to make sure im able to install gingerbread on when it comes out. Also i forgot to mention that everytime i try to update my phone to 2.2.1 it always fails even though im on stock recovery(although even when i go into recovery and it is the stock recovery rommanager still says im running clockwordmod) PLEASE HELP!!!
ps. Im only 13 but i consider myself to be pretty techsmart for 13. I wouldnt mind using cmd/terminal and im running ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop.

If you installed the original passimg then you'll have 2 files you'll want to remove if you don't want the stock recovery to keep flashing back when you reboot
Remount /system rw and remove:
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p
Remove those, flash your custom recovery and you should be good to go.
With respect to the errors: Clear out the cache and dalvik-cache. Wipe and install your rom of choice, be it a stock repack, CM6, Enom etc.
With Amon's latest recovery *1.8.0.1 you can flash both signed (google) and signed (test) packages, so the official update will flash as well as a repack. If you flash the official 2.2.1 remember to pull remove those 2 files again or it will blow away your custom recovery on reboot.
I'm terribly sorry to ask this, as it probably has been answered previously, but I've looked all over the internet on how to back up my Captivate, with no success. So I dreadfully ask, how do I back up my data so I can upgrade to JI6 afterward?
Thank you.

lol...just 5 mins back i was searching for the same thing and i rooted to cognition 2.2beta7........well u must be rooted....u can backup everything by titanum backup(go to backup/restore and there u can backup all/selected stuff)....also download rom manager and then click on flash clockwordmod......
Root your device.
Install ClockworkMod, then go into CWM and download the recovery ROM for your device.
Click back up current ROM.
Be aware, both of you, that CWM is currently unable to extract boot.img so if you upgrade from Eclair to the leaked Froyo, you will need Windows/Odin to restore your device. Make sure you have in your hand Odin AND the correct Captivate factory Eclair image before you attempt to upgrade to the leaked Froyo.

You will need Odin that you have to flash back to stock JF6. If you want to use your backup from Clockwork of your current setup you must be running 2.2 with the 2e kernel. Clockwork backs up your ROM not your kernel.

Sorry if this is a repeat, im very new to Android and a little confused on backups.
I rooted and then did this after downloading clockwork/rom manager:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this considered a Nandroid backup? Is there anything else I need to do as far as backups or is this the best method?
This will allow me to go back to my stock Rom at any point , is that correct?
Then I should use Titanium Backup for data/apps/settings?
hopefully this is where this goes. >_> if not, please guide me to where i need to be.
OK. so what is going on:
-right now i am using a STOCK version of 2.2.1 FRG83D, that i rooted with superoneclick.
-i used rom manager to flash RA recovery, because somehow i can't flash roms with clockwork anymore. errors out every time, regardless of version
-i can flash new custom roms using RA, etc etc, but cannot flash roms and restore to old backups
-if i try to USE a custom installed rom, no matter which it is (i have tried a few gingerbread, nxsense, and some 2.2.1 roms), they will ALWAYS reboot after using them for a few seconds, regardless of what i am doing (setting up, using market, or just letting it sit and do nothing)
what i have done before this happened:
-i was using nxsense perfectly fine. great rom, ran great.
-updated rom manager, and clockwork recovery
-tried to flash a new boot animation, but noticed that the new clockwork won't install older .zips that use assert-scripts(?)
-tried to downgrade clockwork, and it randomly restarted the phone during the downgrade
-wanted to try gingerbread, so i flashed the new(er) hboot 0.35.0017 even though i think i had it already, and installed the rom succesfully.
-the rom wouldn't let me download from the market, as it restarted when i tried to download anything.
-i thought the problem was with the new hboot, so i went through a tutorial to revert it back to 0.33.0012 and went back to eclair, so i updated up to frg83d (and obviously got the 0.35.0017 hboot back through updating) and rooted.
the rom i am using now (stock with root) runs fine. haven't really found any real problems.
i just have NO clue why i can't use custom roms. i would absolutely LOVE if someone could help me on this.
I also had similar problem two days ago. I upgraded my clockworkmod recovery to 3.0.0.5 and tried to flash MM CM7 v14. All the problem began. I cannot restore any custom roms except the stock froyo and MM CM7 restarts like crazy whenever I try to install any apps from the market. After that, I also tried RA recovery. No luck. Luckily, I finally find out that the latest recovery messes up my ext3 partition. So, I backup and format my SD card, recreate ext3 partition, restore the SD card, downgrade clockworkmod to 2.5.1.4, wipe everything, fix permission and install MM CM7. It finally works. Hope this help.
PS: as long as I downgrade the clockworkmod, I can restore any custom roms.
Never flash now you will brick it soon

Latest ClockworkMod was known to have some problem, perhaps.
Use Amon_Ra's, if you want to be sure, and wipe everything (data & dalvik-cache) when going from ROM to ROM. Use Titanium Backup for restoring the apps.

You're welcome. Glad to know my experience can help solving yours too.
Definitely a problem with Clockwork 3.0.0.5! I just went through madness trying to figure out WTF was up as well. The only fix was to completely format and re-partition my card then use RA instead of CW, works great now and I don't know if I will use CW again! What a pain...kinda regret having paid for ROM Manager now after this latest fiasco.
Ok..... I just rooted my replacement LG Revo then installed the RevoToolKit by theCubed. I did "3" back-ups of the stock ROM before I flashed to Revoltrom1.2. Now when I try to restore to the stock factory rom I get a "md5 mismatch" while in recovery boot thru RevoToolKit and cannot restore the factory rom. Any ideas????
LG Revo
2.2.2 Froyo
Kernal: Stock
ROM: Revolt 1.2
Baseband Version: ZV4
Installed CWM Recovery: v4.0.0.2-pr1:

which method are you restoring using?
I go into Revotoolkit, boot into recovery mode, select backup/restore, advanced restore, then pick one of the three stock back ups i did before I flashed to Revolt, restore system and it keeps giving me the md5 mismatch.
I should add that I did the back ups thru the RevoToolKit, menu, boot recovery, back-up/restore, back-up.I even get the same md5 mismatch when I try to flash revo de-crap no matter which method I use and no matter how many times I redownload it. Thanks for all of your input and hardwork. Noobs like myself GREATLY, GREATLY appreciate it!!!!

When you restore a stock back up, just use restore, not advanced.
I'm Revolting and Home-Less, how about you?
I did that and still get the same thing
Alright, if you are on Revolt, just hold the power button and recovery should be an option. I don't see why that would make a difference, but one less step lol. For DeCrap, Revolt, or Home-Less once in recovery go to backup/restore, advanced, system restore, and pick which rom you want (DeCrap, Revolt, or Home-Less). If flashing a stock back up once in recovery go to backup/restore, restore, and choose from factory one. If still having problems, you may try reinstalling stock recovery with revotoolkit, then reinstalling cwm. Good luck!!!
Tbanks!!!! I am a noob so how would I reinstall cwm ? Reroot??
How did you install it the first time? Did you use revotoolkit?
Yes. I rooted using one click and got recovery using revotool
ok you can install stock recovery with revotoolkit, then use it again to reinstall cwm
Should I reboot afterwards and/or clear the caches??
As you can tell, I am a noob to all things root and rom and have very, very, very little to no experiance with programming. This phone is a replacement to one that was new and rooted with revolt and somehow it lost all recoveries and would not leave the boot recovery screen. The insurance sent me a BRAND NEW one which I have now. I rooted with one click, then installed RevoToolKit, booted into recovery, backup/restore, then backup. Did this three times before loading any new roms. i then tried to install revo decrap and got the md5 mismatch, so I installed Revolt1.2 and all worked fine. Basically, I want to have the option to go back to the stock shipping rom(LG and VZW apps just like the phone was never touched).
When I try to restore the shipping rom I get the md5 mismatch. No matter if I go thru boot recovery, backup/restore, backup and pick one of the three, and I have tried doing it through the advanced and get the same thing. I rooted to have the ability to freeze/remove bloat then decided to change roms. Everything works great except some features like the voicemail button or voice search buttons give me errors that state: process was stopped unexpectedly. I went into revotoolkit and changed the recovery from cwm to stock revo and back and still no luck. What are my options? If I take it to Verizon will they reinstall the stock shipping rom, and if so, since the warranty is void since rooted, any idea on what they charge to do that? Thanks so much for the help, knowledge and patience that ALL of you have had.
Hi all,
Just a few, hopefully fairly straightforward yes no answer, questions for someone to kindly help me out with. I have been S-OFFed for quite a while now and also rooted and want to finally take the plunge and try out a modded ROM...not sure which one yet though, but hopefully ill work that one out for myself! I have a few questions before hand:
1. What is and do I need 4EXTrecovery to flash all ROMs? I have the latest ClockWorkMod recovery installed via ROM Manager, 5.0.2.0. Is this sufficient? If I do need it do I flash it the same way as a ROM?
2. In theory all I need to do now is choose the ROM, rename as .zip file and download to my SD card, open up recovery and install? Should be able to do this using ROM manager?
3. What are kernals and do I need to flash new kernals/radios for the new ROM to work properly, or is this dependant on the ROM? Can I do this with only ClockWorkMod?
4. Will backing up my current ROM back up all my apps and music etc or do I need to use Titanium backup for this? Don't really want to have to reinstall all my apps and thousands of songs!
I think that's it. Thanks to whoever for sparing the time.

1) To be sure i would install 4Ext.
2) When you download the ROM it's already a .zip. I prefer to boot manualy (restart and hold vol down and Power buttons).
3) Some Rom's has kernel included. If not, the thread should list the recomended kernel and Radio. Can be flashed from Recovery.
4) You should always flash SuperWipe befor installing a new Rom. A backup from Recovery (Nandroid) will take a image of your current Rom that you can flash back to. Apps can eaily be backup'ed and restored with Titanium. Songs is on your SD Card.

You don't have to worry about flashing a new kernel. If your phone is already gingerbread 2.3 you won't have to worry about a new radio. Backing up your apps isn't really a big deal once you reset your phone with the new ROM and sync Google.com the market will remember what you've already downloaded and it'll show up under "my aps". As for your music its under sd/. Just download the ROM and place it on your SD card anywhere. Hard reset into recovery menu and wipe all cache as well as factory reset. Than select "update from .zip" select the file from where you placed it and away you go!
All sorted....thanks for your help
