I asked this in the DINC2 forum but I'll ask here since the phones are practically the same.
Has anyone tried pushing boot animations yet to data/local? I know at one point this didn't require root but I don't know if that still holds true for newer Sense based phones.
yes works on rooted and custom rommed Inc S. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498 post 2, quote 2.
Believe that on stock roms bootanimation.zip is /system/customize/
I've done so quite a few times.

Step 7 is for boot animations and Step 8 is for the splash screen. I've added some sources as well where you can get some bootanimations and even splash screens to start off with (though I created my own custom splash screen )
would be awesome if some created a thread just on boot animations and splashscreen images. I'd like to remove the htc splashscreen at startup and shut down and replace it with something customized.
You can download 47 different bootanimations from UOT Kitchen.
After download just extract the bootanimation.zip and copy it to your rooted phone.

Hello,
For the past few days i have been trying to find an answer to my question but so i've come up short. With regards to loading a custom rom, what is the process of ensuring that the correct radio image gets loaded as well? I have went as far as modifying my stock rom with dsixda's kitchen (great by the way, very easy to use), but I have not figured out what to do with the radio.img. I incorrectly assumed that it would be retained in the build, and now I'm a bit worried to try it until i know for sure where it needs to go.
Thanks for all your help,
Flashing a new ROM doesn't affect the radio at all. You could change your ROM 6 times per day and still have the same radio.
I'd say your best bet is to search around the forum and find one of the flashable .zips for whatever radio you want. They are out there cuz I remember doing that a while back. As long as you flash one meant for CDMA (DO NOT FLASH A GSM RADIO!!!) you should be fine.
Here's the one that a lot of us are using right now, the newest Radio that came in Sprint's 2.1 Stock release: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681703
Ok well that makes sense. I would use that radio, but I don't have a sprint device, so unless I am completely lost I should just stick with what I as my radio image. I have just gotten a bit confused with all the talk about using sprint rom's in non-sprint phones and losing the ability to make/receive calls, data, ect.
Just so I am clear, as long as I am clear, since I modified my stock rom to add root, wifi tethering, blah blah; the radio will be fine. So essentially, loading my rom would have no more effect on the carrier files than a master reset would. Am I over simplifying it?
Thanks, you are the first person is 5 different forums that explained this to me.
Ok yes, you shouldn't flash a Sprint radio if you're not on the Sprint carrier. Your provider may not recognize it and your phone might not even get signal.
And yes you're also correct that adding root, wi-fi tether, and other such apps/mods will not have any effect on your radio at all. The radio is basically just what the phone uses to receive its signal from the tower. It's like you said...if you're not having any signal/data problems, you really don't need to worry about updating your radio.
Finally, you're also correct in that you shouldn't flash a Sprint-based ROM to your phone if you're not on Sprint. The frameworks and operating files are built somewhat differently in other providers ROMs, so a Sprint-based ROM on your non-Sprint phone likely wouldn't even work.
There are other ROMs for a few other carriers out there in the Development forum. Browse around there to see if one of those will work for you.
Sounds like you understand it all just fine
Thanks, I went ahead and took the plunge and loaded my own rom and it worked flawlessly, well with the exception of my custom boot screen image and the boot sound. I guess I need to just take baby steps I guess. Does anybody know where I can get some get directions on creating custom bootup features? I read somewhere all I needed to do was open the media folder and edit the images as I see fit. It seemed easy enough, but on startup, the screens froze and I got no sound. It did load all the way but I would like to correct this if possible.
Thanks again
A somewhat basic boot animation tutorial (that doesn't seem really good in my opinion, but a good start at least): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639471

There's lots more stuff out there if you search the forum for "boot animation". Looks like some ppl just modify existing boot images to their liking rather than completely building from scratch.
Thanks, I will give them a try. I am still a little afraid to try some of the tried and true custom roms out there for fear of incompatability with my radio, so I am gonna work with what I got and continue to work on my own. Thanks again for all your help
chromiumleaf is totaly right, if your not real familiar with flashing radio's stick with the one your carrier provided a wrong radio flash can brick your phone quick.
for the boot animations when cooking them into your roms, copying and pasting your new bootanimation into the /system/media folder in your working directory, and leaving the option in the kitchen unchecked will give your better results, also here's some more info that might be helpful in building them.

Just make sure u delete the bootanimation.zip file in the media folder before u add ur boot animation cause the zip will always over rule ur animation.
Hi All,
I recently flashed to a custom rom, however, I am not so fond of the custom splash screen animation and would like to revert to the stock desire hd animation.
Can someone advise me how to do this please?
I currently have downloaded Android Flasher 1.6.1 and done S-Off, however, I simply cannot find the stock flash screen anywhere...
Thanks for any help...
Hi,
I am currently on stock froyo and wanted to know how to change the boot animation for my phone.
I have heard that all you need to do is replace the bootanimation.zip file but when i do go to /system/media folder, all i have relating to the bootanimation are these 2 files:
1. bootsamsung.qmg
2. bootsamsungloop.qmg
So what am i supposed to do now?
Please help!
P.S - sorry if this thread is in the wrong place.

hey, i was wandering maybe you guys can help me with that..
i have he exact same problam, it's just that i dont want to change the entire ROM just for the boot animation, any chance you know how to change it?
thanks!
same as jje said
update.zip made in romkitchen boot animation only
thankd dude, no "hard" way i guess...
i've been reading a lot about the issue and it seems no one has yet cracked it...
:\
cracked what issue ??
i dont know what you mean, there is no issue, if you want to change boot animation ONLY then do it in the ROM Kitchen. you DO NOT have to flash the whole ROM again.
Problem is that the update is missing from the kitchen for some reason .
jje
oh i see..... My bad, i had no idea
maybe OP could download basic ROM with desired Bootanimation, then extract and push through root explorer.
longer than usual process, but depends on how desperate they are for new animation.
Is there a way to have custom boot animation for the kernel? If so, how can it be done?

I believe there is a thread floating around here on that topic, also I believe there is a video on mobiletech.

That's not the kernel splash, that is thee param.lfs boot splash that comes before the kernel image.
There are 3 things you see at boot: bootsplash, kernel splash, boot animation(stock uses the same boot splash and kernel splash so there is no visible change). The first and last can be changed easily like the guy said mobiletechvideos, for the kernel you will have to compile a whole kernel yourself there is no way to just swap the image.

Those are the beginning of the boot animation the "s" is the second part of the same animation. Kernel splashes are static images.
Cool. Learned something new. Thanks.
no the kernel splash can be an animation. and i believe the 3g animation is the kernel splash on a stock rom.
glitterballs has a kernel with animated splash, it says kernel panic upload mode, i guess just to test the concept and freak people out a little if they are not paying attentino to his first post, if he ever returns and his thread is reopened maybe he has a way to change it. or maybe if he postes his patches and sources others will copy it.
What peaked my interest was onyx kernel actually has a different boot animation but im using speedmod because of the problems people have with onyx

You should try onix before passing judgement. Some phones like it, some dont. Mine was ok with it, but I thought I would try paragon kernel because several people had success.
Reason why I'm not using Onyx now is I couldn't play .avi files with Video Player, but it worked fine with speedmod.
Good to see you at least tried it. Too many people here go simply on word of mouth (myself included at times).
Curious, which version did you try?
I went with 1.0.1,2 and then 5. Basically updated to it with the firefly update, updated again when the new version was released but skipped a few because of the issues other people were having but went back when 1.0.5 was released but I had to switch because of the video player problem.
All in all, I think it was a great kernel, and I would still probably be using it if it didn't have that problem cause I like to watch vids on the bus home from work.

Back when the Sprint m7 launched, I changed the splash screen by flashing a zip from this thread on the international side - [BOOTSPLASH] iElvis's Custom One Splash Screens [95+].
I've since updated the radios and firmware to the latest available, and in doing so, it looks like my splash screen changed also. I understand that there's a possible issue that could occur when flashing splash screen zips that were made for the international m7 on the sprint m7 relating to the partitions, and although this wasn't a problem a year ago, I seem to remember reading something about partitions changing on the sprint m7 a few updates ago. Am I able to just flash the same zip that I flashed a year ago to get my splash screen back? Or will I run into problems due to how the m7 partitions changed since I first flashed that zip last year?
Thanks

Hey there, you should easily be able to reflash that splash screen but, as always you should make a nandroid back up just in case anything happens.

hang on - since when do nandroid backups include splash screens? I know I've been out of the loop for a long time, but I didn't realize that much had changed...
Is that correct? Will I be able to nand restore a partition brick?
If you want to play it safe, look at the partition structure of the HTC One (International) and the HTC One (Sprint) and compare them. Then, if they're the same, go ahead and flash, and if they're not, don't flash it (although you might be able to work around this by modifying some files in the install zip. See this thread for more details.)
