Please help!!! - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an evo 4g and a rooted nook color running cm7 overclockked at 1300. I also have a first Gen 16g wifi ipad. Someone just offered to trade their sprint 3g galaxy tab for my ipad ..... should I do it? Are there fun roms, kernels etc for the g tab or do I basically have it on my cm7 nook color. You may think I have money owning an evo, nook color and ipad but I don't. I own a deli and haven't cashed a paycheck in over a month.... so this is a big decision. I pretty much use my ipad for Netflix and that's about it and I am with sprint and so is this g tab. I love the looks of the g tab and really need someones opinion asap. Also I REALLY don't care for apple products an am very familiar android anything. I just need to here someone say that the galaxy tab is that much better then the rooted cm7 nook color. I will of course root and flash the hell out of the g tab. I'm going to post this on the nook color foroms also. I have to get back at this Guy on craigslist so if someone could help me that would be awesome.
Thanks,
Dave

[Q] Nook Color or Samsung Tab

So my original Nook went to the great gadget drawer in the sky. I was able use my SquareTrade warranty and they sent me a check for replacement. I am now debating between a NC and rooting it for an inexpensive tablet or going for a Samsung Tab. A NC is $249, while I can find a gently used Samsung Tab for around $400.
When the difference between the 2 was $300, the choice was a easier. Now that the difference is closer to $150, it is a bit more difficult. I currently have a MT4G rooted with CM7 RC1, but would like something a bit larger for reading, web access and watching movies. From my research, the NC is a good tablet, but seems it lacks a cohesive experience. The Samsung Tab is a better tablet obviously since it is meant to be a tablet. I am concerned about a Samsung product since they don't have the best record for updates, etc. What say you fellow XDA'ers, a NC or a Samsung Tab? How is the ereading experience on a Samsung tab? Thanks and kudos for everyone's help!
it all depends, if you have a tmobile? you could get a galaxy tab on sprint for 300 and 30/month and have service ware your phone doesnt.( that's alot of places since sprint has a much better coverage area) now, honestly if you dont care abotu the device having it's own connectivity? than go for the NC also keep in mind you get to text and do video calling on your galaxy tab. if all you're doing is reading? you'll be fine with the NC rooted, it has pretty good wifi range and the screen while not QUITE as nice as the galaxy tab, is still nice.
basicly, if you want the camera/connectivity, go with the galaxy tab, they are really nice.
if you dont need those things the NC if fine for you.
Can you watch movies on the NC? What about the Samsung Tab? I was looking to add some of movies that I have ripped.

LOL,
sorry, might be true in some areas, but there is a reason sprint is pretty much unheard of in my area...

you can watch some video formats on a stock rooted NC and more formats on the g tab, but in a month or so youll have many more options for videos and maybe even blue tooth in the NC
T-Mobile has pretty good coverage in my area, thankfully. I have been a T-Mobile customer for many years and love their customer service.
I am really torn on this purchase. I wish I knew how well the Samsung Tab handled ebooks.
I work for sprint, so i have some bias. I play with the tab daily and saw the nook and knew i wanted it. You can get a "overdrive" that does 3G/4G and duct tape it to the nook and you'd be saving money with more options. The tab does brick, but i haven't seen one person on here that says they bricked a nook. It might be that the nook doesn't have the camera, mic and gps to bring up any issues but i don't use those parts so why pay for them. Just a thought from my peanut gallery.

Why are you wanting to sell the NC?
I have a rooted NC running CM7 and love it. Best 250 i've spent in a long time.
I think GT is much better, at least it has 3G, Bluetooth, 4-button and the Amodled mon. It is a trade-off between price and function.
NC is the highest C/P ratio device!
I have both the NC and the Viewsonic G Tablet. I use both. When size is important, I take the NC (7") . When size is not an issue or I need flash, I take the Viewsonic G Tablet (10").
In terms of performance, the Viewsonic G is by far the best. For more info check out the Viewsonic G Tablet forum.

T mobile has excellent coverage in my area and widespread HSPA+ coverage.

Had a Nookcolor yesterday and put CM7 and OC Kernel to it

Nooter now has a Quand score of 1700 vs DS7 2300.
Everything on Nooter is better than DS7 except the speed.
I can't imagine if there is similar scale of dev on DS7 as those on Nooter, how great this device can perform ....
Where is our CM7 on DS7.....
oh, the battery life on nook color is surprisingly great running cm7... (maybe any device will be better compare to DS7 battery life...)
Be on the look out for something in the next few days. 1.?ghz? Maybe keep your eyes peeled

Nook color is laughable. It'll be way better to just purchase a G tablet.
The support the nook has is unbelievable though.

Well my girlfriend is not too much a tab user and it is not easy for her to put a 10.1 inch in her handbag...
Returned NookColor =(
Damn my girlfriend does not want it. She wanted an ipad 2 white .
which pissed me off as she thinks CM7 is not as good as iOS.

The G Tablet's screen is laughable. I gave it to my wife for gaming. Trying to read on that POS is a nightmare. The Nook is still pretty badass for the money.

Ipad for Galaxy Tab?

I have someone who wants to trade me my 16g wifi jailbroken ipad1 for his Galaxy Tab. I already have a rooted Nook Color running CM7 overclocked at 1300 and I have an Evo 4g also CM7. This is my first post on Galaxy Tab section so I'm not to familiar with the mods and Roms. Should I trade my ipad for the galaxy or do I pretty much have what I need with the Nook? I don't use my ipad for anything but Netflix. ITunes makes me mental and I respect apple products but I'm an android Guy. My wife gave me the ipad for my birthday 6 months ago and just want Galaxy Tab owners to give me a little direction. I have GPS and a camera and a phone for that matter with my Evo 4g so my Nook is fine without those BUT...... I've wanted a GT since the day it came out. Thanks guys. Hopefully I'll be a part of this forum soon.

As an iPad and SGT owner I find the Tab a much more useful device due to the portability. I carry it around with me everywhere. A larger tablet is great if you're not mobile, though I'd probably choose a Honeycomb tablet over an iPad these days as I prefer the less restrictive Android ecosystem. If you're not likely to use it when travelling or in the car and don't need GPS or telephony then I'd probably stick with the iPad.
Yeah that's what they were telling me over in the Nook forums. I just cant stand apple and love android but if I'm going to have two 7" tablets that are basically the same thing I guess I'll pass. That GT looks sweet though.

Galaxy Tab (refurb) for $265

Woot has at 16 GB wifi+3g 7" GAlaxy tab for 259.99 with 5 dollars shipping. Don't forget if you live in Texas use the coupon code TAXSUCKS. The 3g in it is sprints I believe.

Wow thanks!
I JUST bought a new NOOK and was about to root and install cyanogen then I saw this post while looking for the repartitioning thread.
This is a good deal, and I'm in for one. Not sure if I should return the Nook now.
Thanks!
I had the WIFI only version this past weekend and returned it when I found out the internals are different and the current roms aren't made for it so I shipped it right back and now 1 day later this shows up

Gah, I want this so much. But I already got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on pre-order too.
I don't know if that review is still valid. Wasn't there an article recently on EnGadget stating that Samsung said the WiFi only Galaxy Tab does not have as good of hardware as the 3G version of the Tab? Isn't it running the same processor as the Nook Color? Might want to double check those facts and head on over to EnGadget for a quick search.
I guess it doesn't matter...its sold out now. LOL But I also see it was the 3G model. I'll leave the above info lest someone be duped when buying a WiFi only after reading this thread.
I got the 3G AT&T version of the Galaxy Tab for $199 (no contract) + tax from last week. It was refurbed as well but looked like new to me. Flashed Overcome Gingerbread ROM on it and it really flies. As much as I love my NC and like tinkering with it, the galaxy tab is better built and feels more balanced in the hand. Main thing is that the touch response seems very accurate and smooth as compared to the Nook.
The NC was the best choice price/perf wise at release but if you can get your hands on a cheap galaxy tab you wont be disappointed.
I still have a soft corner for the NC so I am going to gift the galaxy tab to my wife who did not really take to the NC primarily because of the softkeys and the touch response.
SOLD OUT !

i would beleive Anandtech over Engadget when it comes to tech reviews and analysis.

damn. good deal. cant believe i missed out on this. I really need a good 7" tablet for the girlfriend. o well.

Just got a Sprint Samsung Galaxy Tab!

I've had my Nook Color for a few months..... have it rooted running cm7/phiremod (emmc). I got a 7" Sprint Samsung Galaxy Tab 3g a few days ago and absolutely love everything about it. I took pics of my kids, videoed a humming bird outside my house, used it for GPS, front faced a video with my wife (no jokes... I'm no Anthony Weiner) and love the HELL out of my 3g. BUT..... That nook color I am so proud of. I still grab that NC for almost everything when I'm in the house (OC'd with D's kernel). Keep in mind I have an evo 4g (use as a phone now), Sprint Galaxy Tab and a nook color. What the Devs have done for the nook color is mind blowing. I really hope that Devs keep doing what they're doing for the nook color because the NC is a GREAT (gingerbread) tablet and no two ways around it. I love my rooted stock SGT but am very proud of my NC and and what roms, kernels, themes etc that I've done to it (not me but the Devs). That's it..... The nook color is a GREAT tab!

The Galaxy looks pretty darn nice. In my opinion they are quickly getting the tablets to where folks want them from both a performance and a feature perspective. The Nook was about the best choice a few months ago, its low price was able to make up for the missing features (camera, microphone), and the competition at that time was either Crap (gentouch anyone?) or Gold ($800 Xoom? Seriously?) These days there are a lot of good choices out there, and many of them are priced on this side of the sanity wall. What sets us apart is the community and the accomplishments of our devs, and the new tabs will take some time to compare there.
I used a 7" Galaxy Tab before i got my nook, and my cousin and brother both have the Asus Transformers so i have lots of experience with various tabs, and for the money i think the Nook Color is just amazing. Keep in mind tho, if i was paying the full retail 250 for the nook color, i would pay more and get a transformer, but i got mine used on craigslist for 160 and for that price it is absolutely AMAZING. I will upgrade tabs when a cheap quad core tab is out for 400 or less, but for now my OC'd to 1325 Nook Color does so much its absolutely mind blowing. Really there is no need for a high end tab right now unless you are super into games and even then a lot of them run fine on the nook.
Chef Dave....did you, by chance, work at Computer City in Edina, MN?

Nah explore I live in upstate NY. Btw... I know longer am an owner of the evo 4g.... but the proud owner of an evo 3d. I gave my 11 year old son my evo.... imagine that... an 11 year old with a pretty high end android phone and..... I'm far from wealthy. I own a restaurant and haven't cashed a pay check in 5 weeks.

Not from Minnesota, but I have a Sprint Galaxy Tab along with the NC, and both are great. The GT is an amazing tablet with the camera and the great speakers. Too bad it can't do Netflix, but that's what the NC is for, plus some.

LOL My Evo 3D arrives on the 30th and my wife is getting my Epic 4G. I had to pay $75 for Sprint to buy out my contract so I could get the 3D at the $199 price, so technically I'm getting it for $275, but my wife loses her crappy Samsung Insight and I get an upgrade in the process. Win-win!
I thought you might be someone I know. I have a friend named Dave who fancies himself as a chef and he just bought a Galaxy Tab. On his Facebook page he mentioned XDA so I just figured you were him.

Can I ask you a question.
I've got my NC - that's my first and only tablet experience. I really like it - but like anything technology related - it has strengths and weaknesses. The only real grip I have is - and the RC I'm using sometimes has software glitches . With the internet connection sometimes pages load pretty slowly - but once they're loaded - everything scrolls fine.
Besides " extra features " like screen size, speakers, and hdmi, etc --- what are the noticeable performance benefits of say - an Asus transformer compared to Nook Color
I too am waiting for a Quad core - " thin " tablet - with longer battery life - for around 400 before I'd upgrade - as the NC really does mostly all I need. and it's Hack friendly for an android greenhorn.

I have the same deal here; rooted/phiremod NC that I love, and just got a Tab 10.1. Love it!! It weighs the same as the Color Nook!! The bigger screen really makes a big difference, and I like the widescreen orientation over the *cough* *cough* iPad2. The thing has frozen up on me a few times, and takes a second to re-orient when you flip it, but I think those things are HC-based and should be addressed in the much-anticipated update to TouchWhiz in a few weeks.
For me, the jury is still out on HC. I like the original OS a bit better, in certain ways. But, you can just run a different Launcher, if you really prefer that. I'm just getting used to it, I suppose. Seems a bit too "unstructured", I guess. With iOS and Froyo, (if you want it to be), it's all neat and orderly. My guess is I will get into it and fix it all up the way I want it to look and I'll prefer it.
I have heard that iOS is getting widgets... If Apple would throw in a microSD slot it would be impossible to resist. But, that'll never happen. and therefore, I will never have an Apple device. (yes, the Tab doesn't have one, either, but they do have an optional dongle that allows you to connect different USB devices, including a USB thumb drive)
So, I last night took my NC and brought it back to factory settings and updated it to 1.2. I will likely re-root it and just add the Market and some apps back on, but leave the original launcher, so whoever I sell it to can use all the functionality of the device - like reading magazines, which you can't do with the Nook app.
