[Q] Nooked. Some help flashing CWM though.. - Nook Color General

Hi there
I finally got ahold of a Nook Color. It came with stock 1.2
Now I need to flash CWM and then start venturing with ROMs. I am a little confused reading through all the threads, keep reading about emmc flashing, SD card flashing etc and it started to get overflowingly confusing.
So, a headstart would be super, thank you
PS. Already in love with this cute little devil.

Ok, so you want to try custom ROMs? Do you want to install it on the Nook or run the ROM on the SD first to try out?
Flashing to eMMC will erase your current ROM, say your 1.2 stock on the NC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Flashing to SD means you are not touching your NC's system and will boot via the SD card and run the ROM from there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957

I would want to run ROMs from the internal memory.
Thank you Shutter

You're welcome (there's always a Thanks button ) .
That means you will be flashing to the eMMC. Make sure to check if your NC has the new partitioning. You'll have some extra steps to re-partition before flashing so you can make full use of the built in sd space for media.

Follow this thread word for word and you will be golden!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
You really don't need to worry about the whole blue dot thing. If you repartition you will get more internal storage, but it is not necessary.

Coming from Rooted 1.1

Hello, just picked up my NC. Messed around a little bit, got it to root fine, running Froyo off my SD. Want to get CM7, was thinking of going the phiremod route.
I'm a little bit confused with the CW version and ext4 compatibility. I'm just a little worried cuz I ended up in a CW boot loop when i tried flashing Froyo to internal mem. But I think its cuz i had flashed the old recovery? Anyway, got back to stock and upgraded/re-rooted.
So can i just go from Rooted 1.1 to burning a bootable clockwork 3.0.1 on to my SD card? Then flash a ROM and Gapps?
The bootable SD card thread says something about the partition needing to be ext4, which is what's freaking me out. Is there a kernel to flash before? am i skipping an entire step here?
Thanks for any feedback

Thats what I did and it worked perfectly. Phiremod has gapps and market built in.

Hi,
I found this post a very useful and detailed description of installing CM7 on internal
memory:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11535969&postcount=151
It includes the steps for formatting required for CM7.
Don't forget that you will need a uSD for 'data' after as well as the one for installing.
Hope this helps!

The easiest method is to flash the zip file found in the thread below (flash 2nd edition, be sure to follow instructions for that edition, dont format boot.). You will need to have clockworkmod recovery 3.0.1.0 installed for it to work (wont work with 3.0.0.5). Note: this will more than likely erase cwm recovery. If you want to make a change in the future to another Rom, there are threads in which you can burn cwm recovery to an sd card, boot from that card and install cwm and the rom of your choice back internally. I have done all of this myself without any issues. Good luck

why don't you just install CM7? it's full featured and much more stable.

I tend to agree. 3.0 was really nice, but lacked working flash player among other things. If you want to test drive, may try to run it from an sd card.

If you do think about running HC off of an SD card, be sure to look for an SD card that runs well. I originally ran HC off of an SD card and the experience was okay, but nothing as good as running off of eMMC. I actually agree with the previous posts: CM7 is definitely the way to go at the moment...just wish the bluetooth was a little more stable.

Questions about rooting

I have been lurking and reading for a couple of weeks now. I bought a used NC with 1.1 and used Autonooter to root it. Works great.
I bought a second NC which had the 1.2 s/w on it. I used the manualnooter process to root it. That works pretty well.
Now I'm thinking about getting into the nightly CM7 game. I'm wondering is there anything I need to watch out for with the 2 NC's I have if I do this. Do I have to take them back to stock? Can I just follow the CM7 instructions?
Any insight and guidance would be appreciated
50 views and no replies. If you read this and can help I would really appreciate some info. I'm reluctant to proceed until I hear from someone who has traveled the road before. Thanks
You can run CM7, stable or nightly, off of an SD card. You don't have to change anything on your Nooks to do this. In fact, they don't even need to be rooted. Running CM7 on the SD card will not change anything on the built-in memory of the Nook.
Look for the "size agnostic" thread, follow the directions, and you're good to go.
ps. I enjoy your music.
yeah, just follow the instructions on flashing cm7 for the first time. and make sure you understand the CWM instructions. you may want to try a stable rom for now. there are lots of battery and kernel issues right now with the nightly builds. but not to fear the devs are working hard to fix them. just stay with the stable's and your be fine. I hope this was helpful...

is this the one you mean?

Well, I went ahead figuring "How hard could it be anyway?".
I did the nand backup with CWM 3.0.2.8
I then ran ROM manager V4.2.0.2 from internal memory.
I choose the option that allows me to download ROMS.
I chose CyanogenMod, and then chose 7.0.3.
I downloaded the ROM
I then chose Install ROM from SD card
It asked me about clearing caches, etc and I chose the default values already checked.
It installed without errors.
I rebooted and it got to the last part of the boot process where the word "color" is rapidly changing and stayed there indefinitely,
I rebooted with CWM on the SD card and tried to reinstall the Manualnooter I loaded on this NC a week ago.
Rebooted. Still hung up.
I copied my nand backup to the CWN SD card and chose restore.
It booted back to my manualnooter install successfully.
So I'm successfully back where I started.
Can someone help me understand what I did wrong on what I need to do to make it work? Thanks
Not sure what went wrong, but I would also suggest trying verygreen's size-agnostic approach. You keep your manual nooter and can run CM7 from an SD card to see if you want to go all the way and remove the stock BN software.
Try this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Or, if you want to go crazy, you could try racks' dual boot SD card image of Phiremod 6.2 (a variation of CM7) and Honeycomb. That's what I'm using and Phiremod works great (aside from battery life ) and honeycomb is just plain slick to use.

I loaded CM7 7.0.2 stable and was able to get it going. Thanks

Absolute best/easiest way to completely back up EVERYTHING stock, then dual boot?

To begin, I have a basic knowledge of Android and how it works. I've rooted, bricked, and unbricked my fair share of Android phones, but the NC is a bit of a different animal to me... Phones are pretty consistent in their methods, the NC kind of caught me off guard.
I've perused quite a bit of threads in both the general and dev forums, and found multiple ways of doing multiple things which got a bit confusing, compounded by the fact that Froyo and Eclair methods vary quite a bit on some subjects.
I have a 1.2.0 "blue dot" NC. Things I know to be true:
Have to use latest CWM SD and replace the boot and ramdisk in order to root with manualnooter.
Have to use the correct 2/4/8GB image for my MicroSD (although the size-agnostic SD image threw me for a bit of a loop, but I'll stick with what I know works).
Here are my goals:
I want a complete backup of stock nook in case I have to start over for some reason. Boot, system, ROM, permissions, everything. What is the easiest and/or most complete way of doing so?
I'd like to dual boot stock and CM7 nightlies off of eMMC and use SD strictly for storage (and use a separate SD for recovery). If that's not possible, I'd like CM7 to be on eMMC and stock to be on SD.
If you've got the time and want to write me up a handheld walkthrough, that would be nice, but I don't expect or really need that. All I'm looking for is links to threads that will give me the information I need to figure out for myself what the best way of doing this is. There are a lot of threads for older versions of things, and some of the discrepancies between here and Nookdevs have confused me at times.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
There is a thread HERE , less than 5 posts under this one that explains exactly what you want done.

I saw that thread and deduced that it was probably the best one. My only question left is, how do I make a complete 100 percent backup of stock in case I bugger something up and need to start over?

After you flash clockwork recovery, you can use it to make a nandroid (1:1) backup of your stock setup.
To get a backup: boot into CWM (whether from an sdcard or from emmc) and make a backup - just make sure you have a big enough card.
Then start flashing the zips!
That was my #1 question, I suppose. Nandroid works the same on NC as it does all other devices? I had just read conflicting reports about people fooling with the /system and /data and having trouble restoring from there even after the 8-boot "trick".
Yup, it does. I have needed to flash to stock and to make a bootable nook sd card.
Thanks for all the help, guys! Time to dig into this thing!

Best option for NC 1.4.3 unrooted

I apologize in advance if this has been asked before, but I searched and couldn't find anything.
I never rooted my Nook Color (firmware 1.4.3) because I like the simplicity of it and I only really wanted to read books on it.
However now I wanted to install other readers so that I could read other formats without having to convert to epub or pdf.
I tried downgrading to 1.2.0 but it still doesn't let me install other apps.
What would be my best option?
Is there any way to do this without rooting?
I'm not afraid of tweaking, I just prefer the stock firmware to use as an ebook reader.
Best regards,
Rita
Best Option According to me
Rita,
Sincerely the best option for you right now is to run CyanogenMod 7 off an SD Card, a port of Android 2.3 for your device. I have a Nook Color too. I used to love stock but the lack of functionality made me install CM7. There are many easy to follow guides available on the internet. If you would like I can tell you how to install CM7 on an SD Card. That way you can enjoy both stock and CM7. Cheers!

You can do what the prior user recommended (CM7 on SD) and also go back to the latest stock software on internal memory and root it. Then you can decide which you want to use. If you look in my tips thread linked in my signature you will see how to flash the lastest unrooted stock software with CWM recovery. Look at my item A12. Then you can root it with Manual Nooter 5.08.20. You can add other apps with unrooted stock but only from the B&N app store. If you want more apps than that, you must root.
@satya-1998: I've already tried installing CM7 on a sd card and I liked it, just not for reading. As an ebook reader I really enjoy the simplicity of the stock firmware.
@leapinlar: I've already put the latest firmware on the nook (1.4.3) and I think rooting will be my best option. Will rooting and using manual nooter 5.8.20 keep the B&N functions and allow me to install other apps?
Do you think following this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494901) would be the way to go?
Thank you both for your help, Rita

Yes to both.
I did it!!!
And as far as I can tell everythig is working great.
Now I just have to learn how to work with the android part of it.
Thank you very much for the help, Rita

I followed the instructions in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22480277), so rooted and used manual nooter 5.8.20.
Ok, now that you have rooted your nook, you can keep it at stock and also keep CM7 on the SD card. If you like the B&N reading, download the Nook app for android onto cm7. Cheers...

Use this simplified guide.
http://taosaur.blogspot.com/2011/09/running-cyanogenmod-7-from-sd-nook.html
You can try a dual boot from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959461&page=1
But I recommend going with booting off an SD card. Much easier, and although it can be a PITA swapping SD cards, you dont run the risk of losing partition space, or having a problem if you have to go to BN for whatever reason.
