Which Phone Should I Get?

I have around $250 to spend on a used phone. Please don't suggest any upcoming phones or that I should wait, only what's listed in the poll. I'm looking for something that wont be too ancient by next year, software and hardware wise. Basically an all around best phone . Software upgrading is pretty important as well as hardware. If there is something not up there, that you feel needs to be suggested, for my price range please tell me Thanks in advance!

The ZTE Blade (or Orange San Francisco as its known in the uk) looks a fairly decent spec to say its a cheap phone. Not sure about updates though.

There is brilliant support for it over at MoDaCo!
They have FroYo and recovery on it.

I paid $255 on eBay for my Samsung captivate. It took me a week or so to find the right auction but that was including shipping when other phones like it were selling for $400.

Captivate would be your best bet, for that price range at least..

a HTC Desire, hands down.. I my opinion its better then SHS (have used it for 3 days, returned it).. and now cant live without out it!

I think you should look at phones rom potential before you choose. Make sure your phone is well supported and with the stuff you like. Secondly make sure your phone has a quality build. HTC as other people have said makes great phones. Samsung makes great hardware but make sure you flash any Samsung product you get with a rom or you'll hate the phone. For instance I didn't care much for my captivate until I flashed it. It was buggy and poorly supported. New rom made it rock solid. Thanks XDA

If you can find an unlocked HD2, you can use it on AT&T, but only on edge speeds. Tons of support for the HD2, but the X10 is doing pretty well on getting an Android 2.2 build.

I have an X10 running XFree Beta 2.2 it is quite decent but still lacking. Or so I think it is lacking. It is my first android device (other then idroid on my iphone 3g). I got it cause it was free and seemed like a good choice at the time. The X10 devs have been pretty quick to patch and update as of late. But I have only had the phone for ~2 months. I am looking to buy a captivate so I can compare. Till then you'll have to take this with a grain of salt. It seems like there are more devs for the captivate.

Although the lack of updates is pretty true.

Im just not a fan of samsung at all i dont like the way they treat their customers i know a few people that have samsung and regret getting them just my personal opinion

About the ROM
This is a continuation of the original port by incubus26jc. Here's some specs:
-Based on the [LEAKED] HTC Vivo RUU 1.38.707.1 (thanks 911sniper!)
-Rooted/deodexed, otherwise completely stock (unthemed)

-Camera is fixed*. Camcorder is still borked, as well as video playback, but it's a start .

VERY VERY well put dude.

LOVE the Z-roms and am looking forward to this!

Not being a d*ck but when i flashed the initial port i did not see much difference between this and the various z roms in terms of features and functionality besides the htcvoip package file i found and the notes, tasks & hot contacts widget. Maybe I am missing something.
also, i am not sure whether this is still a gsm rom or dual cdma/gsm rom. i was told it was supposed to be cdma global in the US but not sure which rom we have on our hands here - i.e. is this the european rom or the US rom. If this is the european rom, it wont solve the issues we have faced with the gsm Z roms.

Its also worth noting this is also a newer version of sense than the one that it on the desire z or HD. There are suttle changes like being able to group items in the start menu along with no more kenect scrolling ahla gingerbread.

Hi, I like a lot of your skins, but I & quite a few others don't like these sports, and can't really use your skins. Thats a shame because they are nice. So my question is, please could we have version of these skins that aren't sports orientated please? The upside to doing that is it will allow these skins to have a wide appeal to people, so intern more people would use them. Thanks

I doubt it, as far as I can recal they never added any more Sense 2.0, and five is a fairly decent amount.

This is really a pez effort from HTC. They are nothing more than colour style sheets for the ONE skin. If you look at the original design for these skins, say for Sense 2.0, there was a difference in the graphics other than colour.
For example, the brown/orange one, 'Memories', use to have a different shaped dock. It was not transparent and had a 'stitching' look on it and textures. The current version on sense 3.0 is the same design as stock skin except the colours.
Check out the other skins from Sense 2.0 and you will see what I mean. The docks are different shapes and some dont even cover the entire length of the bottom, such as 'Slate'. To me this sucks because it is one of the defining features of Sense. I on my old DHD I would change skins every few weeks and the UI would look really different - and not just the colour. Lazy HTC, just plain lazy.
On the plus side, it seems folks have found a way to provide skins for Sense 3.0 from the market. This method is simple and does not involve rooting your device. However, at the moment there are few quality options out there. HTC, please give your graphics team a nudge and sort this out for Sense 4.0.

Don't All of these skins come in every Sense 3.5 rom? Thats what i had from my experience messing with Sense 3.5..

I installed the update with sense 3.0 and I noticed that the only old skin with a not curved dock (the one simple like a rectangle) was not in the 3.0 version. Do you know how to recover it?

Hey yea I totally know what you mean like they had the metal one and the wood one and they all gave a completely different UI.
I think what happened is they realised that for daily use most people only used the original skin (I have never met or heard of anyone who didnt), with the others for show or messing around. Simply because it was the most usable one.
In this case, having the original theme but with different colouring schemes was the more useful route to go.

There are some 3.0 skins in the.market, none of them worked for me tho, they don't top the ones made by HTC anyways

Ever since HTC released the first version of their 'new' Sense experience (3.0 and upwards) themers faced a huge problem. The majority of graphic assets used by Sense was hidden in the custom 'm10' files.
Back in these days Flemmard and Diamondback managed to crack these files open, giving the users the ability to extract, edit and repack the images.It didn't take long until HTC switched the internal image format of these files and theming support for the upcoming Sense versions was lost (3.5 and later).
Only recently Flemmard and Diamondback achieved another breakthrough, they finally found out what the mysterious image were all about. Thanks to their great efforts and the amazing theming skills of Cypis we are finally and proudly able to present you the Immersion skin.
The Immersion skin is the first fully featured Sense 4 skin, exclusively brought to you by the Virtuous Team.
It includes theming for the Sense Launcher, Sense apps and the Sense lockscreen. As it's only skin it can't theme all parts of the system. We did our best to provide premium experience for all full Sense 4 devices. We are planning to support lite version of HTC Sense 4 as well. There is no ETA for Virtuous Ten Studio release with image decoding support so please do NOT ask.
