Or rather lack of it.
I start of by saying, i am not a dev.
But i see that the way rom's is made for Galaxy lack's most of the things that makes custom rom's good, SGS's rom's seem more themes than proper custom rom's.
I have used Nexus and some of the great rom's to that device.
The SGS way to update FW seems to stop all real development?
What do you think?
samsung's drivers are encrypted and this makes developing roms pretty difficult. there can only be roms based on samsung releases. at least this is what i understood .
i am sure that the growing user base of this great phone will bring more attention from great developers ( hi paul ! , who will be able to overcome most of the problems and give us great roms.
The final non-beta firmware from Samsung hasn't even arrived yet! Give it some time!
Custom roms now would be obsolete within one week because of a newer official beta Firmware.
I was aware that a few days ago paul obrien was having a conversation to cyanogen about creating a vendor tree for the sgs which would enable us to use cyanogen mod. If someone can confirm this with paul this would be very good news for us sgs owners.

Right now I'd settle for a vanilla Froyo (my last phone was the N1).
The SGS has potential, but the stock ROM is so infested with Samsung customisations (eg non- AOSP dialer, contacts, music, etc etc), why have they re-invented the wheel?? Before this phone I didn't think fragmentation existed, only "legacy". Now I know exactly what fragmentation is, and it's ugly, annoying.
The only reason I ditched the N1 is because Google have said there would be no N2 so I figured I find another phone.
Now I realise how bad fragmentation is, the iPhone really doesn't look so bad again ... (previous to the N1, I was on a iPhone 3G)
It's a pity vendors can't be mandated to supply optional vanilla ROMs - I know Samsung have released a bunch of source code, maybe that's a start.
I guess I'll give it six months. I'm an end-user who wants an easy life, but appreciates the potential and integration with google services that Android provides - moreso in its vanilla form.
Did anybody try compiling the sourcecode that was released by samsung to create a flashable working version of the manufacturer Android version that is currently running in our phones?
If that is possible, and we do have the source code from samsung, I don't see why it would be impossible to get at least a vanilla AOSP 2.1-update1 running on our galaxies.
The encrypted (or closed source drivers) can be linked as binaries to the new AOSP build running on top of Samsung's kernel (which we do have the source code to).
Side question, anybody knows how to flash the phone once you got all source code by samsung compiled ? I know we end up with a zImage, possibly a system.img.. can you create Odin files with these easily ? any thoughts?

same here. previous n1 user, got sgs just after google announced no n2 wil be available.
just took some actions to make things smoother for me :
1. launcher pro
2. dialer one
3. handcent sms
i used them all on n1 and now i do on sgs. its all good again . still, untill froyo hits us i think i will still miss n1's speed. also, i think after froyo hits us, we will get some more roms and goodies for our phones.
what exactly is a vendor tree? and how would it be able to get around the driver issue which is apparant to the SGS?
Some info on the .rfs files that samsung uses:
http://movitool.ntd.homelinux.org/trac/movitool/wiki/RFS
Merging into AOSP
It seems like good idea to have the scripts merged into AOSP tree that support building stock ROMS for samsung galaxy s, with binary-only files being downloaded directly from the device (if I'm not mistaken, this is how one can build froyo for N1 from source now).
From someone else experience: would the patches that add vendor-specific support for SGS be accepted into AOSP tree? Are there known blockers for this?
Hmm.. rom development is quite sluggish due to the firmwares that are being released!
But i really don't care! the original rom is fine with WJG5!
I just use Launcher Pro and widgets to make it better! Speed is ok!

This still doesn't get around the fact that the drivers are locked down and are near impossible to implement into outside roms that aren't Samsung based. Talking isn't doing anything.

This isn't fragmentation though, this is exactly what Google wanted Android to be - a base for phone manufacturers to lay their own tweaks on top of. HTC, Motorola, Samsung etc don't just want to be differentiated by how their handset looks, they want to put their own stuff on there too. Previously each had their own OS (Symbian, UIQ etc.) that took years of development time and was very slow moving. Google provided Android as a quick route to market for a phone, the manufacturers didn't really have to worry too much about the OS and then get lots of apps for free.
The thing is, the vanilla apps are a bit.. basic. The standard music player is fine, it works and does what it says on the tin. The standard contacts is fine again etc. Makers can ship a ROM based on vanilla Android and it would be good to go, but if they can improve upon the apps and brand it slightly more then all well and good.
But it's not fragmentation. Android is a base. A starting point. It's not meant to look exactly the same on every device, but it's meant to work exactly the same as much as possible. These manufacturers get a stable, standard, capable phone OS for free, which to them is awesome. It saves them so much time and is ultimately why eventually there will be nothing but Android on devices. It's the Mac vs PC all over again - cool but closed and restricted vs ubiquitous free-for-all.

If the right people get onto it it's only a matter of time. The G1 camera drivers were reverse engineered for Eclair CM ROMs after HTC gave the community sod-all.

Didn't they have the source for 1.6's camera drivers? At least then they had a base to start from. That is not true with Samsungs drivers.
A little bit OT but due to the fact that in this thread are some EX-Nexus users: Would you recommend switching to the SGS ?

It's when it doesn't work, it's very very annoying. How long do we have to wait for the Samsung music player to enable scrobbling? Sure I can use a different app from the Market - meaning Samsung wasted effort on their own Music app, why didn't they build on the AOSP version which does support scrobbling and iSyncr, etc because they use standard API or whatever so these other programs can read the state or whatever they need to do.
Same with dialer and contacts - on Launcher Pro, pressing the default Contacts icon - won't get you anything except maybe a FC :-(
The AOSP Desk Clock - where is that? If I install a clock from Market then I have two different Alarm daemons which is a waste of everyone's time when the default Clock in AOSP Eclair is fine and - more importantly - compatible with stuff and API calls.
Then all the other stuff that may or may not be Samsung stuff - the DRM, the Device Management, the Samsung Account - given the option I just don't want that stuff.
I'm intending to flash JG5 (from factory shipped JF3) which may increase performance but presume won't make these other problems go away.
I'm really happy with the hardware - but currently I am dissatisfied with the software and "Samsung knows best". For me, personally, Google knows best (and I bet they have data on me to prove it!), so I really want to see Froyo AOSP version for the Galaxy. That day may come, or it may not ...
I know I know, "can't please all of the people all of the time"

Right now the question for me would be "do I recommend switching from Samsung OS from Froyo" - my answer would be no, unless:
1. better multitouch is important to you (better for gaming, no axis mess-up)
2. 4" screen is important (I do really like the Samsung screen)
3. Better built-in audio quality is important (the Galaxy is noticeably louder than the N1 and I think it may have a better A/D sampler too)
So fully recommend switching for hardware, UNLESS you can't live without Froyo.
I can live with the SGS shortcomings. Well, for a few months anyway ... and even if AOSP never comes there are alternatives in the Market but does mean you have to ignore the Samsung stock apps depending what you want to do (which means added complexity to your life, which I don't always have time to deal with!)

Do you have any proof that the drivers are actually locked down in any way?
I can see the source of all the modules provided by samsung, just 3 of them (pvrsrvkm, s3cbc and s3clcd) are just precompiled, and if you check the info they are GPL.
Am I missing something?
@miker71
Thanks a lot !
Hello,
I joined the xda community about a year ago, first with my Htc Magic, then with my HD2. I have the opportunity to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab from some carrier for little extra money of my current Internet plan. And for 10 €/month more, I could get the new 10.1 version...
Although I do know that logically I should choose the 10.1, I still consider the 7'. Why ? Well, it would be cheaper at first. Then, I like the 7' size more and I'm not sure I would need Dual-Core processor for Internet surfing ! Also, the 10' model's phone app is blocked by the carrier, while it's not for the 7'...
But I digress !
Before to sign up to the plan, I'd like to take the pulse of the community. It's something I always do prior to purchasing a new device. I'm use to the HD2 orgy of Roms and OS and I must say that the less-furnished Development section for the Tab leaves me thinking. I don't doubt of the quaility of the ROMS but I wonder if devs are not already leaving the Tab's development for more recent Tablets and devices.
So...If you are a serial flasher like me, is the Tab a good invesmet ? I'd love to flash later CyanogenMod releases when there will be actual Tablet versions of it (for the moment, CM7 on a tablet is still in its early months) and of course Honeycomb or even better, Ice Cream Sandwhich. Will there be dev's at that moment ? Of course, I know it's not an easy question to answer but it's more about the community strengh until today actually...
Thanks and see you soon hopefully !
cm7 + tablet tweaks = win.
with roms, ill take quality over quantity, even tho there are only 3 2.3 roms, they are all badass.
the tab7 has been the best tech device ive ever owned, i have an ipad but it lives in the draw, its just way to big todo anything with other than using it in bed or on the toilet.
I suggest get the 7inch or wait for the new 7inch (who knows when that will come)
the only negative i have is that theres so many new devices out with dual core ect... but so far it hasnt stopped me from doing anything that these newer devices can do (you can play tegra games via chainfire) but eventually it will become an issue i guess.
The carrier matters.
More dev work is being done for the GSM variants at the moment. But spacemoose1 does have an alpha hc rom and dev continues in that.
Thank you for your anwser and I do agree about quality over quantity...
I'm aware of tablet tweaks from CM7, I already used them on my 4'3 HD2 screen but that not much in comparison of the many tweaks TouchWiz seems to bring to the Android 2.2 UI. Of course, overlay means slower device but oh well...
Is it possible to easily save/back up the stock Android Rom it will be shipped with in order to restore if I need to return it under warranty ?
Thanks !

Yeh, you can do a nandroid backup, or just find your stock firmware, from the website sam-firmware (i think thats it) or just brick it
I'm very proud that I tote around CM7 (latest nightly) on my G2, which is a very polished rom. I have tried other roms, which they had their perks and trade offs, but I always came back to Cyanogenmod. I guess it is so good, it caught the eyes of a handset manufacture Samsung. See link below.
Cyanogenmod head joins Samsung to work on Android.
I hope since the head of CM7 joins Samsung, the CM7 team keeps up with the development of other handsets.
dont worry this is a very big win for the android world
hes still the owner of cyanogenmod and hes still gonna work in cm8 when ice scream sandwich comes out! plus hes got an amazing team of developers to back him up that your really not gonna feel any diference
also with steve in samsung i guess that crappy touchwiz UI will no longer be crappy
I highky doubt Steve is gonna mess with the TouchWiz UI as his focus with cyanogenmod has always been complete user control, stability and performance. I hope that he's the peptobismol to Samsungs bloated stuff...
Wow this means we're gonna have big improvements to our custom ROMs thanks to the knowledge he gets there...
I'd rather have him work with Google on Android, and not Samsung.
so this means only samsungs will get CM?

which means, samsung has monopoly on CM roms
nope. samsungs work is samsungs work and CM will be his own project, focusing on android. For some strange feeling that I got, I take it that CM won't be releasing any projects for the future Galaxy S line or any Samsung products
Have to wait and see what he does with Samsung. It's not like they are going to turn him loose in their software and allow him to make a completely different ROM for Samsung to run.
More than likely he will have some creative input - but will be a fellow coder (a.k.a. monkey) that will only be allowed to work on a specific parts of it.
Which is too bad actually - Sammy user's might get a slightly better running ROM - but it still won't be Cyanogen
My My..what a Charming Video. It's a pity that I in this First Post case I can't be brief. I feel I must state WHY am here for the best effect later on. Its Very Impressive...though I suppose nothing less should be expected from coders.
Goodday All,
First... Let me introduce myself - I am CrazyOGuy.
While I do what I can to be technical (and I can tout a decent share), over all technology of today is nothing less then science fiction made real. Its... humbling. Just for the sake for putting down the ground work..for me it will be a bit slower and take longer to gather my thoughts and in turn understand all this...*Stuff*. Please ...Mercy upon me with all your infinite wisdom. Work with me and I shall return the effort. So with that said... with this post here I am officially one step closer at trying something completely new to me. For the sake of incite for the wall of text I shall summarize what to expect all this text for; It's for a audiophile and his Music, New Devices and its respective OS, and What I can do with them (Root). I have been very busy in my exhaustive research.
There is a reason for all the text here before the final literal line (information is like that), but if you wish to skip to the main point of this post, I have made it so you can do so and just get to the point.
---------------
As stated Music is a big thing for me, and as such I had for a time something called a Cowon J3. With its BBE enhancements along with other proprietary enhancements, a OLED Screen, Amazing Battery Life , and the ability to play practically every Audio (and Video) file under the sun It was just about everything I could ask for. But then I found I bonus use for it- Just Icing on the cake; I also used it as a portable portfolio of sorts. With its stunning OLED Screen I used it to show video and pictures of things I have made. Then I put it in my pocket and it was my Personal Media Player again. Then - Gone. ( I'm not going to elaborate in that part so please don't ask.) That's what I miss the most. I miss bringing my music with me - but oddly enough what I miss more so is not having my archive of past work at my finger tips. That's what I have been searching for. Sadly the J3 is one of a kind and has just recently discontinued. If it wasn't for the successor being right around the corner (which I have heard October) I would probably get another one and be done with it.
You can change software - But hardware is a bit more permanent - these are the things I think about when I make a "computer based" purchase. But events have forced my hand... I can't wait anymore. So I am now considering what ...I really....REALLY...I mean REALLY! ...Didn't want to consider. Blasted Newfangled Tech. I have yet to interface with an Android OS. I have of course heard about it, but don't really know much because I haven't needed to. I haven't held it in my hand and played with it. I don't know how far I can mod it. How to shape it... help make the device "My Own" (like remove the TouchWiz UI).
So with that said I first looked at tablets and settled on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. While it doesn't play FLAC out of the Box I hear that there are Android Apps one can get that can make it play .flac and sound better...like Voodoo or Power Amp (thought I would prefer BBE which unfortunately is iOS only for now). It also has a very nice screen. But then in my ever classic fashion of being thorough I said...Ok I like this; Just to make sure let's see If I can find something better. Better in this case means : Smaller, Nice Screen, Plays FLAC default...
Then I found something better. The catch was it was a "Smart Phone" - or as I call them- a REALLY small computer. The Phone in question is the Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 ( I know about the chip difference in the Samsung SGH-i717 Galaxy Note LTE).The thing is...I'm not going to use it as "A Phone" because I have a phone. It makes calls and DOESN'T DROP THEM 99.8% of the time. That's all it does. It's all I need it to do. It does a great job at it. I'm happy. There are more reasons...but it would be best not to start the rant. Not going to talk any more about it.
Therefore I want to use the small computer phone as a small computer tablet but with the main purpose of a PMP which happens to have some extra features along with it.
---------------------------------------------------So why am I posting this here? ---------------------------------------------------
The reason I have just submitted this "wall of text" because I am in need of a informed second opinion(s). I know NOTHING about this kind of stuff, so I need to make sure that this Crazy Idea of mine isn't just wrong due to something I may have missed. I have found that no matter HOW GOOD you are (or at least for myself) at researching and gathering data about -whatever- it's never fully done without a subject savvy/aware Human being giving their thoughts on whatever the matter may be. With that said here is what I want to do..."THE PLAN" as it were.
I intend to buy a Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 5.3" Android (Unlocked, 850/1900 3G) and use it as the world's smallest Tablet PMP. NO PHONE USE. In regards of its connection to the internet/"Google Play" I intend to use its WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct & Wi-Fi hotspot abilities when I need to. No Sim Card. I will then proceed in doing what it takes to modify it (though I don't know much about that bit right now which is why I am posting here) and add the appropriate apps to either bring it to -OR- exceed the J3 PMP Sound Quality.
I want to Root...but I have Never done anything like this before and am ignorantly unaware of how these things work (and to a degree the total power of rooting a device). All I really know is that if done incorrectly I get a really expensive paper weight. ( I imagine I will be reading a lot of your wiki...I have already gathered some info from the wiki about the wifi issue)
Is my plan/idea feasible, or will the lack of the sim card cause the wifi to be moot? I have a million questions want to ask like can I turn off the GPS and do things for tablets work with this...phonetablet? All this is in the to make sure I don't waste the cash on false pretenses.
Thank You for your Understanding (particularly if you read all of this post. Bravo!)

Firstly I want to say hello to you!
Yes, you can use galaxy note without SIM card and use it only as a Wi-Fi device. You can root it, customize it, flash ROMs on it, do pretty much whatever you want. You can install different players if you want FLAC funcionality, play store has a lot of music players apss to choose from.
But I want to give you an advice. If you don't want to use it as a phone, if you want a big screened device which plays audio and video, and it's capable of browsing the web etc., then you should really consider NOT to buy Galaxy Note!
Instead you can get Galaxy player with 5' screen! It has a slower processor and a screen with lower resolution but it is far more cheaper and perfect for your needs.
Power Amp has great sound quality in my opinion and it has built in EQ so you can adjust it just the way you like it!
take a look at this video!

Power Amp has great sound quality in my opinion and it has built in EQ so you can adjust it just the way you like it!
take a look at this video!

Woah! - you quoted the entire thing. The Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 is nice and if I was just doing thing on simply a music stand point I would be absolutely agree.
But since I the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 has a Wacom Pen in it, for me it opens up possibilities in the event I use Adobes mobile apps. In the event I am showing off things visual in nature the nicer OLED based screen is a good idea. Also its since its supposed to be a phone its smaller than the smallest average tablet...making it abit more pocketable (thought I know it's pretty big for a phone).
I don't mind putting down money If I can make the most out of it...make it worth the investment (which with the database of this place I intend to do).
Besides If I for some reason wanted it to be a phone I would likely have gone with the LTE vers. which is slower and more expensive. That's the logic I'm telling myself any way.
I don't know what some of the things you mentioned are...but I guess that gives me something to look up later on.
Thank You.
The note is definitely quite a step up from your old j3 . (never heard of Cowan or j3 before )
I googled a bit and found that j3 had good battery backup so if you are planning to replace that with a galaxy note you should also be aware that this phone is really powerful and it chugs up the battery like crazy.
So if you plan to go all out editing multimedia, streaming videos,dlna,wifi....it won't last that long.
I am not discouraging you from getting the note, cuz other than this issue you will absolutely love the note.

I'm not surprised at all. It's a very audiophile centric device. If it wasn't for its (or should I say Cowons reputation) for Legendary sound quality and Great Battery life they probably wouldn't exist anymore. Everything else Cowon does is...seemingly erratic and odd. They only just recently shipped their first android device with 2.3 Gingerbread, which was one of a few reasons I found was odd enough to look other places. And so... I am here.

Yes that is something I am currently looking into. It's the one thing that I'm unsure about. As quoted from your wiki (and I Samsungs website) when on Stand-By the Battery lasts Up to 960 h (2G) / Up to 820 h (3G) and during Talk time (which I'm going to presume it means use of the respective connections): Up to 26 h 10 min (2G) / Up to 13 h 30 min (3G). The thing is I won't be using 2 or 3 G. Just Wi-Fi. So I'm thinking that If I can disable things that I'm not going to use at all I can boot the Battery time up for a few extra minutes. I also need to see if I can disable the GPS because I'm not going to really use it since the only reason I would have Wi-Fi on is to Upgrade or Download an app, even then I presume I could just connect the Note to a computer and get the same thing done that way. All this is presuming that I can do these things.
The main power drain for my expected uses would be from the screen and this amazing Exynos chipset I keep reading about. Otherwise Ill just turn the screen off and listen to my music.

Edit:Well I have been peruseing this forum I have noted some things. There is no dedicated post for newer individuals... fortunately I found a video about What a Root is (which I essentially knew already). I see all this talk about Roms and can't help but feel a little overwhelmed. There are so MANY of them...whatever they are. I also keep reading about USBs and SD cards - Kernels and Flashing. I have looked at the wiki but I find my self still not comprehending what all this is about. Sense its my intent to mod the Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 to my likeing- I think it would be a good idea if I understood what I would be getting into before I jump in. I must be crazy - Looking before I leap!? Absurd!
Since I presume that when/If I root I am saying "So long" to the warranty, does this mean I can't get a Samsung Account? Ive looked around and I can't seem to find a Download to Odin - which I currently think is required to root the Sam-Note. I'm not complaining, but I have to say there is just so much here. The hardest part is figuring out the right question to search.
I apologize for the bump, but I have a few more questions before my use of this thread I have created is complete. I also apologize for the...link format. Its the spam filter...I'm still new apparently. Go figure. Ill presume you all will know what needs to be filled in.
The Questions:
Does anyone have a recommendations on where I should buy the Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000 Note? I just want to know the options I may have other than Amazon, Ebay, or Expansys.
Will [".youtube.com/watch?src_vid=cJjh6gi0Spw&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_802229&v=ehXcnqntsro"]THIS root method work with 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich? Is there currently anything here that won't work/isn't stable with said Android OS version?
Will Adobes Apps ([".adobe.com/products/photoshop-touch/tech-specs.html"]Photoshop Touch for example) work on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000? I ask this because said app is made for a tablet...but the GALAXY NOTE isn't your average tablet since it's a phone? It meets the resolution requirements... just not the size. Hence the confusion. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?
Will Rooting make my phone more susceptible to being Hijacked/Hacked /Virus?..so on. I presume its no, but security is nothing to play with. Does McAfee have an App? (That was a joke)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...
Flash the Rom with someone else's handy work?
I also have a VooDoo Music App based compatibility question but I'll just ask in its respective thread later on.

You all (well most) have been very helpful. I know the main purpose of this site is Modding Android (or at least the phones they come on) , and not to play 20 questions with the noob who doesn't even have the device yet! So - Thank you for your understanding. It is greatly appreciated.
Hey Folks,
So I just read the news. Chromecast Audio has been discontinued as a Google product, and I'm quite upset because I love it. I use mine every day.
I've been poking around the internet, and came across this section of XDA, and I'm honestly very pleased that someone has already not only dumped the ROMs from Chromecasts, but released rooted versions of it.
So I was wondering, since this is Linux at the core, is there any way we could build our own Chromecast Audio devices from other hardware and "Google Cast" to them like we normally do?
I'd prefer to just buy more Chromecast Audios, but at this point, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get my grubby paws on them now, let alone when I want more in the future. So Google really is forcing my/our hands here.
Like, surely we could hack this onto a Raspbery Pi, or some other integrated system we could plug into a speaker, yes? It is Linux after all.
But hey, I'd love to hear from someone who knows more on this subject than me. Namely the lovely people in this forum.
Thoughts?
BTW had to get a mod's help (SacredDeviL666) to get this posted. For some reason it kept triggering spam checks whenever I tried to post (even though I was passing ReCaptcha). How odd.
old Android phone?
Hello, I want to know if there is the possibility of using the Chromecast audio OS on an old Android so you can give new life to an old phone and stereo
