So I'd been using CM7 for quite some time and recently broke things horribly when I tried to use ROM Manager to check for the latest nightlies. It hosed my phone and left me in a constantly rebooting logo state. I was able to fix that by wiping everything and rebooting but then decided, "Hey - why not get the latest nightly?". So I downloaded the latest nightly and the latest nightly failed to install. It asserted on failing to find p990 or something.
So I wasn't sure what to do at that point. If the nightly didn't work anymore, maybe I'd just try to install a recovery image so I took out the SD card and copied the img file to it and put it back in. I put the battery back in and at this point the phone wouldn't come to life. Not a spark. I tried plugging it into the wall, a USB port, the system reset... nothing. No life at all.
Am I totally borked or is there any hope here?
Update: I managed to get into the S/W Update screen (battery out while plugging into the USB port) but I can't get OneClick to re-flash because it won't recognize the USB device).

if your using windows, goto device manager, while phone is plugged in, look at the device list, select lg something(your phone), then uninstall that profile, then plug your phone again, it will ask for drivers etc. proceed with installation, then it'll be ok again..
You have a P999, not a P990, hence the assert check fail.
With that in mind, you will need to NVFlash over a new recovery, then you can boot into it and fix the phone. Look in the G2X development forum and grab one + some instructions.

Rom manager is supposed to auto detect what he has tho and give him rom results based on his device.
On mine ROM Manager gives me a bunch of options when first picking a recovery, if he picked P990 there...
Yeah it asks what device u have, think there is about 4 to choose from

Yep. It was an incorrect ROM selection. I was able to breath life back into it by reflashing it to a stock image and then the proper Cyanogen.
As for the ROM Manager - the biggest problem with using that is that it rebooted the phone and left me looping on the animation. It broke me in the first place. Maybe a bug with the LG G2X version?

Hi
My brother (a no-geek) has a captivate, and lives in a different city (I donot have physical access to the phone). He visited me few weeks ago and I installed CM-7 on his phone, i know my bad. Some of his videos were not working, so i asked him to update to the latest CM-7 build. He download the build, saved it on int sd_card and used ClockWork Recovery to install the selected ROM. Upon reboot it entered in never-ending splash screen. I found couple of odin ROMs, and posted him link, we tried to flash them, but no good.
Status --
The COM ports are detected, but the process at times halts at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>... at times all thread completed successful would show up as soon as hitting START.
I dont have a captivate, can someone please suggest a sure shot solution and post me a link for ODIN, with a root rom. I am using Team Whiskey on my Vibrant, and I prefer stable modified ROM because of its features and power.
I can explain him the process on skype using desktop sharing, but the ROM should be good. Thankyou very much in advance.
if he can access recovery, try wiping everything thru recovery then start again
Phone is in Soft Brick state.
Phone is in Soft Brick state. So i cannot boot into the phone and go to CW recovery.
What he needs is just a stable usb connection that's how he got to this point, bad communication between the phone and computer. On cm7 I beleive you need the nexus s drivers installed. Also make sure it's plugged into a usb port that's attached directly to the motherboard (back of pc, port 1 on laptop)
@studacris
I think the drivers are already installed good. The connection is also good, as i can the COM port detection in the ODIN, with one of the boxes changing its colour from NO-COLOUR to YELLOW-COLOUR.
I think the ROM builds are not good. They go action-less during flashing, actually nothing (progress bar) comes on phone, it keeps showing the Downloading screen, endlessly. Odin usually is stuck at at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>...
Can someone post a link for a test one click odin. Well i would prefer one click.
You did try DG's JF6 one click, thats the only one I use, how are you establishing dowload mode on the phone or are you even doing this.

if you could do all that, why would you need to send back for a new phone ? If you could do any of that, the OP wouldn't be in a non-functioning predicament

+1 If you read the OP the problem is he can't flash back to stock he is having problems flashing anything period, @ the OP correct me if I'm wrong but I have a strong hunch that you are leaving out some pretty crucial steps, I have a feeling that you are not putting the phone into download mode, I also believe that you are gonna need to make a jig and pay a visit to your brother to help him out especially if its bricked the same way mine just was flashing with cm7 roms. But if you are getting a com port to show without having to put in download mode then you are farther along in the boot process. If this is the case you may be able to adb into recovery do a full wipe excluding /boot and reflash. Will the PC recognize the phone with it in its current boot locked state? If so then recovering should be somewhat of a breeze.

- I am getting to downloading mode by
--- pressing the "vol +" and "vol -" buttons and then connecting the usb cable to the computer.
--- then removing the cable, after the phone enters the download mode. Then, start the odin and connect the phone through usb cable again. The odin detects the phone on one of the COM port.
- I havent tired wiping the phone through recovery. But i need to get to recovery first. I dont know in a soft brick state if i can get into recovery.
- regarding getting back to 2.1... i would like to flash to the latest version. Kies update is not an option for me, as i not in US.
This phone was purchased from craiglist, i used one click root method to root it and the same script an option to get the unlock codes. After that i experimented a lot on the phone with various scripts. Last i was using congnition on it. Then saw CM7, i liked it on my vibrant, so i flashed it on my captivate (which i got for my brother). Now i have to get back to some stable modified ROM... I am thinking about trying Srendipity or cog ROM... but before than i have to install a rooted stock ROM.
That is the story and issue... but thanks a lot for help. Any more suggestions.

Try putting the phone into download mode after you open Odin. Which version of Odin is this? Also, installing the nightly build of CM7 again often fixes the boot loop on the newer builds. I would try that if you can get to recovery.

So I was putting V21A on my p925g, got it on and working fine, rooted it, and then when I started to flash CWM, it started acting funny. It told me to mount the SD card, so I went into options and mounted it, everything seemed fine. I then went to flash CWM again and it told me to mount the SD Card again, so I restarted my phone, and thats when it stopped working.
When I boot into Android System Recovery <3e> it says:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't open CACHE:recovery/log
and if I try to wipe data/cache/ or any of the options, it says completed, then it says E:can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
So.. am I totally screwed now..? Is there a way I can have my device recognized by USB so I can re-flash V21A, or recover the phone?

Yes it boots to the logo, but the problem is I can't get it to be recognized as a USB device.. Therefore I can't flash, or do anything like that..
Edit: Also I've tried to get download mode to work, but I can never seem to actually get it to work.
Ok turn It off pull the battery out then hold down the buttons for download mode plug the usb in and put the battery back in all wile hold those button down and let go when it vibrats or when devise manger sees it

Haha thanks anyways, I managed to get it working. My problem was holding down the power button too long, which would shut the phone off.. >.<... Your thread is very good, and straight forward, ive learned quite a bit about my phone. Just a tip to others who flash the v21a - root using super one click, and then flash CWM via dark's flash manager, I tried to flash through rom manager, and it gave me the option for the optimus x2, thinking nothing of it, i flashed it which was the source of my problems.. im now using the King 3D rom.. has everything I need, the only downfall for me is frequent browser crashes..

Optimus 3D with an identical problem
Hi guys,
UK based noob here in desperate need of some help! My LG Optimus 3D won't boot past the stock Android recovery screen. When i select "Wipe cache" etc it displays "can't mount CACHE:recovery/log".
Using the method of pressing volume up & power button i can get Windows to recognise the phone when looking at Device Manager (it shows "LGE mobile composite USB device"), but ADB doesn't let me communicate with the phone and neither does any other program.
Please please please can someone help me?! How can i fix my phone?
BACKGROUND-
I got to this stage after doing the following: i used LG Mobile Update (after a LOT of messing about trying to get it to work) to update to Android 2.3.5. It kept all my data and settings but unrooted my phone. So i re-used SuperOneClick to root my phone again.
Upgrading to Android 2.3.5 didn't give me the updated stock email app, so i wanted to try and update that myself. I went into ROM Manager.. and here is where i think i made my mistake. Instead of flashing ClockworkMod Recovery as i would do normally to do a backup image of my phone, i instead went straight to "Backup existing ROM" in the main ROM Manager page. My phone rebooted itself.. and now i am where i am. Screwed!

I'm not exactly sure, but once I got my phone in download mode (volume up + power) I just used dark lestat's guide to flash the european V21A KDZ. Once I flashed that, I downloaded his recovery manager, and flashed CWM that way. The first time I flashed CWM via rom manager is what caused all my problems..

Yeah that's where I went wrong too.
I seem to be able to get it in some sort of download mode, but I'm not entirely sure. I use the volume up + power button technique. I used the LG update software to download a recovery image and it started updating the phone, but when it gets to 15% complete it says the connection between the computer and the phone has been lost. It's really annoying!
I'll re-read Dark Lestat's guide and try that. Thanks for your response.
Got it working! Dark Lestat's guide worked a treat. I honestly thought I'd bricked my phone.
Hi all kind bros and sis,
Please help me out as I think I've really bricked my less than 2 months brand new Optimus 2X..
You see.. I rooted my P990 using unlock root and chanced upon CM7 and thought of giving it a try. I installed clockworkmod and downloaded the stable release of 7.1 for Optimus 2x.. following the instruction to do a Nandroid backup and proceeded with the Mod..
Not knowing that I need to wipe everything including data.. I just selected the Dalvik cache wipe and proceed with the mod. The process went for more than 15mins and I saw some graphics (the android figure going round and round) but it just stuck there... the screen went blank and when I touched those home or back buttons.. they will lighted but nothing happens. I can't power it off also. So I manually took out the battery and put it back before powering up again. The android picture appeared again briefly for about 1 min and just hanged there. I took out the battery again and this time it was dead.. no matter what I press : vol + and power buttons together; home+Vol+ + power down; Vol- + power down.. all those do not revive the phone.
I tried taking out the external SD card and try powering up. The LG logo appeared and got stuck there.
I searched on Google and found the smartflashtool. I tried that and managed to install the NVidia boot recovery driver and stuff correct. Hold the vol+ button and power key before plugging in but the smarttool did not find the com port or communication driver whatever so I couldn't flash it back to stock.
I'm very desperate and stuck now... did I just accidentally burned the board or something? What bad luck I have
If that's the case, will I still be able to bring the phone back to LG service centre and get it repaired?
Please help me.. any kind souls out there. I really liked the phone and hoped to bring it back. else it's such a shortlived phone... really breaks my heart to see this..
Thanks in advance...

Follow trymhansen's instructions. He helped me before with my softbricked phone.

Best of luck to you!
PS. I also believe you should pull out the battery after turning off the phone in Trym's instructions. Trym correct me if I'm wrong please.
Hi All,
Thanks for your kind replies. I did follow your instruction. Take out the battery (I removed the ext SDcard as well), press and hold -vol and plug in the phone via USB. Afterwhich start up smartflash tool.. still nothing happens and no com ports are found.. The version of smartflashtool that I used is Dec 2010. Do I need to get the latest one and also the LG united drivers installed?
I also tried starting smartflash tool before the sequence.. still the same. BTW.. my OS is Win 7. Is it supported?
Really at my end's wit. Hope I can bring my phone back to life soon and I'm not really bricking it. I heard Samsung phones are not that easy to brick and can get to the recovery mode pretty easily. is it true?
Please help me.. thanks
Hi bros,
Attached are my screenshots from the device manager and smartflash tool... both seems not able to find the phone and allocate a com port. I've tried installing the latest LG mobile driver 3.6 but no help as well
Have you followed instructions as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008070 ?
Also, try to attach your phone directly to computer, using usb ports from computer mainboard. I have experienced problems when attaching it via extension usb cord or attaching it to computer case ports. (I hope that you can understand what I have mean to say with usb )
Hi Memhis,
Yes.. I followed exactly the instructions from the thread and I've plugged into a USB port directly to the computer which is one of the ports in front.. not via any extension or USB hub.. still it did not detect.
I'll try to use another computer which is running Win XP and try again. I've downloaded those 3 files from that thread you recommended try using those instead.. hope it can be detected this time else I think I'll have to send to LG service for repair tomorrow.
I've been jailbreaking and modding my Iphone a lot and everytime whenever there's a near brick situation.. I'm able to fix it but not this time with an Android or LG perhaps... I hope I don't have to go to the extend of using ADB low level to push some files which I saw in one of the thread that one of the guys did that.. but I doubt I can since my windows can't even detect the phone!!
Maybe this will be my first and last LG phone if I ever get it repaired...

I just tried to revive my phone by using the same method on a different laptop running on Win XP.. plugged directly to a side USB port but still no luck. But lucky for him is that he's able to get it working after changing to another PC but I've tried 3 different machines and no luck so far...
I'll try to use the NVflash as a last resort and see if I've any luck with NVflash at all.. If it failed again.. I think I've no choice but to send it to the repair centre for servicing then..

When you say an USB port in the front do you mean an USB in the back? Because the ones in front are the case ones, the ones in the back are the good ones, i.e. the ones that are directly attached to the mobo.

I plugged in the phone with battery but there was no charge logo or whatever.. the screen remains blank.. I'll try to leave it charging and see what happens. But I've remembered there was still about 80% power when this disaster happened and I've taken out the battery since.. so the charge should have remain? Btw.. where can I get this ext3 back.zip and how to use it? thanks
Anyone else having this issue? Procedure I followed was at "[ROM][ICS][P920] First ICS 4.0.4 Full 3D ROM Ported From SU760". Honestly, I'd really like to post this in the appropriate thread, but can't yet. I am experiencing the phone powering to the LG screen and off repeatedly upon plugging in a charger as well as hitting the power button. I had hoped it might just need juice but no dice. Does this really have anything to do with CWM? There is something about a modified USB cable in the original post that refers to a "screen issue" but there is no clarification to what issue. Here is my original post with a follow up:
Thanks!
OK maybe I should clarify

I do get the "S/W" screen with Korean text when I boot into download mode (if my terminology is correct i.e. up vol + power + connect usb cable to pc, then insert battery. How can I recover? Start over? How if I can't set connection settings on the device? ACK I have been at this far too long and must rest, hopefully with shiny new replies in the morning.
So to clarify, I had the ROM running fine. I was about to flash a zip, but was tired and had not loaded it onto the external SD. I am using the CWM referred to in the original post here:
"[ROM][ICS][P920] First ICS 4.0.4 Full 3D ROM Ported From SU760".
The app went through the motion but did not install anything, I assume. Then I hit "Boot to recovery." Could that have caused this? Now I get the LG screen and then no power, up to 3 times if I hold power. I am hesitant to follow any bootlooping procedure since I don't know if they apply to this phone and if that is the problem (it appears to be, but I am new to this. I WAS feeling nice that I was able to get ICS up and running). I cannot seemingly boot to recovery to reflash or downgrade. Also, when I connect to pc in download mode I get the Korean "S/W" screen with circular arrows and Korean text, but LG Flashtool does not connect. I recall hitting "Recover" in English during the original ROM flash. Please help!
I think it could be a bad ROM.
I assume that you can't boot to CWM/recovery mode and reflash a different ROM.
If I'm correct, I'd try to reinstall CWM via USB if possible...
Thanks for responding!
Someone IS out there...
I can't seem to boot the phone itself into CWM recovery no matter what. The phone was not left in debug mode, unfortunately. I am looking into using ADB to perform some kind of boot loop recover, but at this point am not confident in doing so. Any ideas here would be nice.
I see a boot loop recover guide on the forums, but it seems to assume I am able to boot the phone into CWM recover.
FYI I am not fluent in 'Android speak' but am getting there.
So if I am able to get a COM connection to the phone in download mode (which seems to be the case, as I mention with the S/W screen with circular arrows and Korean text- I do see a connection in Device Manager) is it possible then, to reinstall CWM as you mention? How? Would that, then, hopefully, revert it to a state where it is not, seemingly, attempting to implement some non-present process on booting?
OK Finally!
OK so NO one seemed to be able to help with my direct issue but I was able to at least reflash to the 'stock' Korean ICS port and get the phone up again. Ho Hum. Maybe I'll start an Android reflashing business. I will be trying AcidHazard mod to flash out all the bloatware. And DEFINITELY will be more careful with ClockworkMod.
This is what I did:

Alright forget what I said about further flash for now
I was gonna try to flash in the Acid Hazard music rom which looks awesome, but the Prada CWM I installed (mentioned in the original xbsall ICS ROM installation procedure) once again caused a boot loop and I had to reflash the xbsall rom again. Until I see a CWM that I know will not cause this, I won't be booting into recovery. As I'd like to make a Nandroid backup, what is up with this CWM being a problem with my phone (ATT LG Thrill P925)? Anyone?

To the moderators
This is resolved
I have a LG Thrill that is stock ICS. If I boot the phone and check all the buttons the buttons work, however when I try to boot into recovery the phone just boots or turns off. I hold the 3d and volume down button then push the power button until a vibration and lg logo then release the power button. I've tried to go thru adb to reboot into recovery but I cannot see the device in adb.
Have you actually installed cwm recovery?

No, I'd love to be able to install CMW or TWRP but the guides I have found all say that I need to be able to boot into recovery.
You can install CWM (or TWRP) by flashing it with Fastboot, but you will need to place a recovery image file named "cwm.img" in the CWM folder in the Fastboot pack. Some available packs (check the Optimus 3D dev section, same device, Euro flavor) have the image files already included, I think.
The method I have mostly used is to flash xbsall's rooted ICS with recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195753
His rooted ICS uses a type of recovery that is in system partition (not recovery partition). So if you want that, or you do not want to flash your device, use Fastboot (or one of the customized variants)
First, thanks for the help. I now have superuser available and couldn't be happier. The reason I decided to do this was that I couldn't get the wifi to switch on and even with the super user access it won't. Should I assume that this is a problem with the phone or is this something that would work if I were to roll back to gingerbread?
It's most likely a problem with the ROM/kernel you're using. I'd switch to another.

I can't say thanks enough for holding my hand so far. Is there a good guide that you would recommend for me to look at. Some of the ones I've viewed here have different information for each of them. Is the reason that thus phone is so different from what I'm used to due to the omap processor?

I had the wifi problem a while back; it was due to me installing a custom ROM without doing required wipes in recovery before installing it. Not sure how you got to ICS, but if you follow the guide I linked above it should solve your problem. You don't have to install the custom ROM if you don't want. Just stop after installing rooted ICS. Be advised that driver install for pc is fiddly, hence the detailed install instructions.
Can anyonne throw me a line here. When I install the omap drivers for the phone (step f4.1-4.5) the phone still keeps disappearing from the device drivers. Even disconnecting and reconnecting with the volume up button pressed isn't helping. Any ideas? I've tried uninstalling all of the drivers, using system restore to roll back, different cables. It used to work, now it doesn't any ideas?
If you mean the way it keeps blinking on and off, be ready with the mouse. Watch for when it appears and quickly right click on it, you kind of have to catch it. Then point it to the driver in the Fastboot folder (not the one in the omap4flash installer folder) as described. Once that is done you unplug phone, then replug, volume up, and let the two LG drivers install. All LG stuff on pc should be uninstalled and pc rebooted before beginning with all this. Also, some antivirus software can mistake the driver as being malicious and delete it when unraring the Fastboot folder, without it notifying you. And if you have a custom bootloader on your phone you may need to skip running omap4flash installer; they seem to not agree somehow.
