I'm considering installing the new UNL3ASH3D custom rom but I have a few concerns. I was running CM7 on my Droid1 so I'm not a total noob with Roms. I've already rooted my bionic and have bootstrap. My main question is in order to install this ROM the directions say to do a full system wipe in order to install. So am I going to lose everything I've already installed on my bionic, like my apps, contacts and SMS? Also, I know that there is a update coming out in November from Motorola to fix bugs and hardware issues. Will I still be able to get that update and other OTA updates with this ROM? Thanks
If you came from an OG Droid, wiping should be nothing new. It's part of the game...
And wait? Up to you man. V3 runs great, and I'm pretty sure a new update is coming tonight. That's a decision for you to make

You just format/system under mounts and storage instead of wipe data. No need to wipe the data. Wipe dalvik under advanced and wipe cache and you will not lose anything.

According to DroidTh3ory, he said-
NO MATTER WHAT ROM YOU ARE COMING FROM
THIS ROM WILL NOT WIPE. IF YOU ARE COMING FROM ANY OTHER ROM YOU MUST WIPE EVERYTHING, AND IN CLOCKWORK UNDER "MOUNTS AND STORAGE" FORMAT /SYSTEM.
Isn't stock considered a different rom? So you would need to wipe everything including data, which in that case you lose everything.
Also, DroidTh3ory will just update UNL3ASH3D when an OTA updates come out. Currently, v1.4 is better than stock so no reason not to update.
Titanium backup?
Make a nandroid?
I did that just in case.
All of my apps were saved in my google account, so Market just automatically re downloaded those.
I backed up all my contacts to a vcard on the SD card. And my pictures/videos/music are already stored on the SD card. What more data is there?
It was a tad annoying waiting for FB and other services to resync my stuff, but that got done, eventually.

I switched to v1.4 UNLEASHED yesterday from stock, and so far I'm loving it! I will be using this until the LIBERTY rom gets out of it's current alpha state and gets the official release. I have the LIBERTY ROM on my computer, but I don't think I will flash it, even though I hear the alpha stages of this ROM are excellent. If you would like to try it out, go to chat.andirc.net. Type in any username and in the channel type "#Bionic". This will allow you to download the alpha stages of Liberty.

This is correct. You MUST do a full wipe whenever you're coming from a different ROM, and as stated, stock is a "ROM". I made a nandroid backup of my stock rom before installing unleashed for the first time, as well as backing up all user apps with Titanium Backup Pro and texts with SMS Backup. Restoring all my apps was a breeze, and all my contacts/whatnot restored automatically thanks to being synced with my Google account. It's painless, just follow the instructions in the main thread and you'll be fine.

Hello, I have the Unleashed ROM on the Bionic. If I wanted to go back to the stock ROM I will need to do:
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
mounts and storage select format/system
Can I then restore from my backup?
Titanium Backup, grasshopper. Back up EVERYTHING with it. It is the absolutely essential app if you're going to use a custom ROM.
Thank you. I had a backup of the stock ROM that i did before installing the Unleashed ROM.
I essentially loaded with bootstrap did the above and restored with the back with no issues

So im wondering, what is the standard practise, or based on your own experiences. What is the best way to flash over an existing rom using CWM? What do you do to prepare the fone for new rom, wipe user data, dalvik cache, before or after flashing. Just trying to get a good idea of how to do it.

going from rom to rom:
put rom.zip on /sdcard/
reboot to recovery
install zip from sdcard
point to rom.zip
flash
reboot
any rom that has been properly done will wipe user data and dalvik cache for you. no need to do it manually
i always flash back to eclair and master clear with odin one click to make sure all files from previous roms are gone then CWM flash new ROM

lets look at the master clear function shall we?
when you flash to stock...your entire / is stock (RFS, eclair 2.1, /data /system, etc)
essentially, you have just reformatted your root, think of it like formatting your C drive and your sdcard is like a secondary internal drive that contains storage
master clear at this point will only delete items off your /sdcard
roms dont care about your /sdcard, master clear is worthless when you are stock
there was a time where it was necessary to flash to stock to reset the filesystem and then flash the rom. it has not been needed in months, but it continues to get preached as gospel.
even flashing to stock isnt necessary unless you are trying to come from CM7 or MIUI....or if something goes horribly wrong
Thx for info guys, I have flashed a few times and it seemed like now and then my fone must became bogged down and needed to be fully wiped, sound didnt work or lagfix folders bunch of text docs, just seemed cluttered. So if wanted to really clear out junk what would be a good way without having to flash back to stock?

I would definitely agree. I have also seen people say to disable lagfix before flashing. I have not done that either and never had any problem.
Would just like to amend the advice already given with the following:
Pre-flashing:
1. Titanium Backup of apps and data
2. Nandroid backup in case something goes boom.
Post-flashing (assuming success):
TB restore of user apps/data only. NEVER RESTORE SYSTEM FILES.
They may not apply to some people, but I feel those are necessary steps for anyone that actually uses their phone daily.

why not restore system files? Does this apply if coming from flashing back to stock first, or just flashing from one rom to another?
Glad to hear the advice about not flashing back to stock, that's been one of the major reasons I haven't flashed quite as many rom's as I want, too time consuming.........not to say that i'm not flashing a couple rom's a week, but there's just so many options to try

Making "search" a standard practice would be very helpful.
Restoring system is known to mess up ROMs in all cases. Though may not be mandatory, but make it a standard practice to flash stock. Takes hardly 10 mins, and helps save big headaches later.

Incompatibilities across rom versions, mostly. As the guy above me said, restoring system files tends to mess up a rom because you are overwriting part of it with files from a different rom.
There is one caveat, however. If you're flashing back to a rom you originally performed the backup on, you can safely restore system files. For example, if you were running Cog 4.3 and did a full TB backup, then decided to flash Serendipity 6.3, you would want to restore only your user apps and user data. However, if you decided to flash back to Cog 4.3 at some point, you could do a full TB restore without worrying about incompatibilities.
I agree with everyone else. Flashing over another rom seldom causes issues. I make s nandroid backup of my favorite rom with everything setup the way i like it. then flash away trying different roms. When i am done, i just restore my backup and all is good!
I have done a search, couldn't find the specific answer I needed, hence my asking. Could be I wasn't phrasing the search correctly......but here I am.....
To clarify, what do you dpo to get your system settings back after flashing a new rom? I flashed to serendipty 6.4 last night, as per the advice, I didn't restore system files, just apps and data, but that didn't work so well for me. I lost my data connection, could only use my wifi, and had no contacts, or any sms msgs. I don't know what else was missing, but I then went and restored system files, everything came back as needed, and there seems to be no issue......
How do I get my info setting back, or do I just need to manually re-set everything after flashing? Apart from wireless info, msgs and contacts, what else do you lose by not restoring?
Appreciate your help
havent flashed a new rom in a while and forgot if anything extra was needed when flashing a rom over a rom
thx!
will i lose all settings, files, apps?
is there a way to keep everything and change rom?
I would say it is good practice to do full wipe when switching to different ROM generation.
Once you are on CM7 upgrading to never version is OK with just caches cleanup.
In your case I would use TitaniumBackup or any similar app to backup all the apps. In theory you could try to restore the app data but may not work properly. Use as much as possible backup/recovery build in the apps.
BTW consider app2ext - I do not known if such a feature is available in FM - search the forum how to create separated partition on your SD card
well i gave it a try.
updated OR, did all 3 wipes, installed the latest CM7 and rebooted.
i just got the M sign no matter what i did.
had to nandroid back to my latest backup.
never had that in any froyo mod.
is it hopeless?
should i try again?
When you wipe, go into the partitions menu and format boot and system too.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
how exactly?
didn't find it in the OR menus.
Don't do that!
There's no data of /boot in CM7 packages!
Switching from Stock 2.2.1 to CM7 worked flawlessly for me back then.
Try downloading the CM7 .zip again, apply it and do all 3 wipes afterwards.
tried again, like you said.
didnt work. back to froyo.
bummer.
ok, tried the HO NO mod of this rom and its working!
looking great. thanks for your help.
this HO NO is a version of the original CM7. meaning if there are future updates to the original CM7 i will be able to update, correct?
i wont have to necessarily wait for a "HO NO" version?
It's not that easy.
HO!NO! is a CM7 mod - that's right.
But if you mix updates from both HO!NO! and CM7 you will very likely end up with the M-screen or bootloops again.
Usually it's like this:
Update the ROM you're on: flash zip, wipe caches
Change to a different ROM: flash zip, wipe everything

I am new to using safestrap. I am on Eclipse and want to try this ROM. When I want to revert back, is it easier just to do a restore? The installation steps seem to be the same except for the factory wipe. Why does this have to be done?
For those using this ROM how is the connectivity?
You need a clean partition to install on. That's why you have to wipe before installing. If you don't, you could end up with junk from the other rom still on there and causing the new rom problems.
Far as reverting back, you may want to install eclipse on nonsafe so you can just toggle from safe to nonsafe. If you plan on installing both on safe, you will have to wipe everything each time you switch back and forth.
Sent from the Evil Empire
If you use eclipse as your daily rom, I suggest installing bootstrap and using it to install eclipse. Then after doing that, install safe strap again and use that to install ics. We have more ics coming out still and you don't want anything but ics on the safe and your regular rom on nonsafe. We will probably see at least 2-3 more versions of ics.
Sent from the Evil Empire
That is a good idea. As to installing Eclipse in the unsafe partition. I need to make a complete backup of the current safe system. Then toggle from safe to unsafe and do the restore?
What happens when another OTA update comes from Verizon?
More ICS questions when I get that far.

Your probably going to have to start with a fresh install of eclipse from bootstrap. Backups from safe strap and bootstrap aren't compatible with each other from my understanding.
When another update comes, we may have to go back to stock to install it.

There has been a new version of ics released since this came out the other day.

If I do not want to use bootstrap, then if I want to revert from tbis ICS version, it is either restore a Safe backup of Eclipse or reinstall the .zip file after the appropriate data, cache wipes?
What do you have running on your nonsafe partition?
Sent from the Evil Empire
I've never restored a safe partition backup to the nonsafe partition. I've only used the safe to play around with new roms while keeping my main rom on nonsafe. Each time I play with a new rom, I clear everything in safe and write over the last rom I played with. Safe mode is like my Android's playground.
Sent from the Evil Empire
in the unsafe partition is Verizon's 2.3.4 .902. The safe one has Eclipse.
I just backed up the safe partition. After I try out this ROM, is it recommended to restore today's save to the safe partition or just reload Eclipse from scratch?
I'd keep a backup of stock made, put eclipse on nonsafe, and leave safe for playing around with ics. Sounds like the first thing you should do is back up your stock. After that, install eclipse over it. You may be able to restore a backup of eclipse over it. If you can't, you will have to temporarily install bootstrap, wipe data/cache/etc and flash a fresh copy of eclipse then reinstall safe strap. After reinstalling safe strap, switch to safe and install ics and you will have eclipse on nonsafe and ics on safe.

I was actually surprised and excited to see this update this morning but thought it would be ICS.
Long ago I rooted my phone just for gaining control and removing bloatware but ended up flashing my first rom with WildStang's Gingerbread OTA. After that I applied the "Warm" theme and been happy with that thinking there would be no more updates to this phone.
To the point - my question for you all is what do you mean by flash over? When the OTA is pushed is it just a patch or do they somehow send and entire install which removes the previous version, saves your data, installs the new version, and puts back your data? I don't have a problem with wiping and starting fresh, and it sounds like that is what everyone is recommending, I'm just trying to understand how it would even work flashing "over" my current version.
Nobody has replied to my post and I have not seen anyone report a trouble free install here so I'm gonna sit on the fence for a while
Did a full wipe and all seems to be working well

I have a question.
I am running an ICS ROM how does this affect me....
Well my QUESTION is this:
What are the procedures to installing this and can I just reflash the ICS ROM I was on before.
The only updates with this push seem to be SMS and Bluetooth, is it even worth it?
Thanks for your time guys....
I performed a data/factory reset, cleared the cache partition as well as did a dalvik wipe but after installing it gets stuck on the white Incredible screen. Any ideas? Perhaps my kernal/radio? I honestly lost track of what kernal and radio I have so I am not sure.
So what's up with this ROM, I flashed like 3 times And it boots up.....then it starts a random reboot and just bootloops continuously. Is there any fix?
EDIT: seems the OTA update was a bust check this out........

So guy - you put this out here and it seems like everyone is having problems. How about some feedback. I'm getting ready to sell this phone in two weeks and want it to be on the current version but I'm not touching this ROM until I hear it freakin works. There are always a few people with issues but I'm not hearing anyone saying "flashed it and running with no problems". Appreciate the effort to get this out there but if your gonna take the time follow through on your commitment.
Hey guys,
Sorry if this seems really noobish, but I seem be to kinda lost in all of this ROM'ing goodness.
I have read up on installing custom roms and plan on doing so but I have a couple of questions first before I take that last step (already unlocked and rooted on my One) - note: I have read through the guides but I still seem a little confused as to what exactly changes.
I notice that all tuts mention that you will lose all data on your phone. Does this include installed apps or are we just talking system files needed for the new rom? I have my phone setup already and have my apps backing up with Helium (Carbon) but this is something I seem to be a little confused with
Secondly, using something like CWM (Premium), can I update my ROM quickly and easily without losing any data?
I know that unlocking my bootloader will not get me OTA's so I am looking forward to using many of the awesome ROMs here on the site!
1) When you flash a rom, you need to do a full wipe in aroma.
Full wipe will erase all but not the sd, so your app in home, your background, your account will be erased.
2) You can upgrade your rom with CWM if is the same rom and the base isn't different.
If the base is different you have to do a full wipe.
One more
How likely is base to change for a ROM package? And if I have to flash that new ROM package instead of doing the update through CWM, am I back at square one again with my apps and data or is it just updating what it needs to?
Thanks again for the help!
Then:
Now, all the rom is based on 1.29.401.13.
When it will change (it depens from htc) and you will flash the latest update of rom, you have to do a full wipe, and you will lose all file, settings and other.
Instead, if you have to flash an update like: you're on 2.5 to 2.6, you can flash the rom with only dalvik cache and cache wipe.
But it depens, you always have to read in thread rom
I guess its not so big of a deal considering I can backup most of my apps using Helium and the rest of the apps can just be redownloaded if I keep a list. Configurations should be backed up anyways.
Thanks for the help!
If you're rooted and you will restore your app after a full wipe, i advise you titanium backup.
With this you can do a flashable zip with all your apps and data
Thanks!
I will take a look at Titanium backup and see what it can do! It would only make sense that someone would invent a way to backup all your apps and data (no matter what) to be able to restore them after a ROM update that wipes the phone completely!
Titanium backup can do this
However, only data app, not system app.
If you backupping system app too, you can have issue with new update of rom
