Hello,
I've just recently switched from a Windows Mobile phone to the Hero, and there are a few features I miss from my old phone. I'm hoping that someone can recommend some apps to fill the gap; I've looked around on the forum and not yet found anything that seems like it would do what I want.
Calendar:
The calendar app that comes with the phone works great for everything except one simple feature - it displays all events on the monthly view with the same icon. My old phone used to have different icons for events in the morning, afternoon or 'all day'. This made it a lot easier to tell them apart at a glance. Edit: You also can't flick the screen to the side to scroll through days.
Mail:
This is just a minor annoyance. You can't swap between emails or email accounts by flicking the screen to the side.
Notifications:
If I've missed a call, received a text message or something of that sort, I'd like the phone to vibrate every 5 minutes until I acknowledge that I missed something. Currently all I can find is making the track ball glow, which isn't terribly useful if the phone is in my pocket.
If anyone can recommend some programs to fix those issues, that'd be great. (By the way, I'm using the Modaco custom ROM v2.2) Thanks!
Steve
For text notifications, grab SMS Popup from the Market. Brilliant little app imo
For the calendar get Pure Grid Calendar and turn on the Timeline option in settings

Missed call can repeat notifications for missed calls and texts. You can also set the vibration pattern.
For notifications, I use Missed Call. Seems to work well for missed calls and SMS messages which is all I need it for.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I tried SMS popup and it worked fine for texts, but as expected, it didn't do anything for missed calls. I've now installed Missed Call; I'll see how well it works tomorrow.

As for Pure Grid Calendar, that looks good. However it's a paid app; does it work well? The reviews generally were positive, but I'm paranoid about paying for something that doesn't work quite how I'd like it. In particular I forgot to mention that I need it to sync with Google Calendar - the guy's website suggests it does in some of the comments but doesn't specifically say so. Do you know if that's definitely the case?
Thanks again guys.
Pure Grid Calendar and it's cousin Pure Calendar are paid apps but you do get to use them for about 24 hours for free. If you then install you get a refund. My understanding is that this happens for all paid apps but perhaps someone who knows more about market can confirm.
As to syncing with Google calendar, again my understanding is that it is the device itself that syncs. In each calendar app, including HTC calendar, you just choose which calendars you want that app to display. The pure calendars are the same.
Personally I use Pure Calendar rather than the grid as it shows an agenda style widget in a 4x2 format.

I read that somewhere else as well, and then went to check the Market. That's indeed what the Google Terms of Service said; you can get a refund within 24 hours as long as you haven't tried downloading the program before.

Ah, that does make sense. That way each designer doesn't have to program their own syncing code.

I actually tried the Pure Grid Calendar yesterday, and I'm happy with it. I particularly like how it brings up a pop-up of the day's events if you tap a day.
I'll have a look at the Pure non-grid Calendar as well later, as I can't access the market from where I am at the moment. I assume its advantage over the basic Android calendar widget is that it displays multiple days?
Thanks to you both for your help.
Recurring Events
I am new to Android from WinMo as well. I am having trouble with recurring events. I work a rotating (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off; I KNOW!!! ) schedule for 2 wks with one workgroup then repeating for two weeks with another workgoup, then starting over.
This was not a problem with the calendar in my WinMo Tilt. I could "program" my work schedule in my phone and look out as far as I wanted to. I miss my calendar!
Am I missing something, or is the android calendar completely lacking in this area? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hey guys!
I just discovered an annoying feature on my SGS which I think is a general feature of Android phones...
I usually text long messages (I'm on an unlimited SMS plan) and I get frustrated at the fact that whenever I pass the 3 SMS point, it auto-converts my SMS to MMS. This would be useful for those whose carriers naturally charge less for 1 MMS as compared to long SMS but mine isn't one of them (15 php/mms versus 1 php/sms or free)... and besides I'm on unlimited SMS so this "feature" wastes that plan of mine.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's any way at all to suppress this behavior. A quick Google led me to solutions of just cutting back on texts/sending them in multiple parts or using Handcent SMS app.
The first is too inconvenient for me and the recipients of my texts and cutting back on texting is difficult for me and shouldn't be a solution.
As for the second, I've tried Handcent and it does have a setting to not auto-convert long SMS to MMS but I dislike the layout/theme. I prefer having the look of the original messaging app of the Galaxy S. Nice and clean and blends with the look of the whole system. No matter what tweak I do to the themes and such, it just doesn't look good for me.
So my question is...if Handcent SMS has a setting of suppressing that behavior of Android, is there some way to do that without Handcent SMS? Maybe just a simple app or a tweak somewhere in the software perhaps?
Thanks so much in advance! This is really too annoying a feature and I just want to be rid of it.
I know this is sort of old but I am wondering the same thing. Anybody have any answers?
Foryo is said to keep it as sms http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=74cc9dfbd1669f47&hl=en
EDITED: didn't completely read first post.
I'm not sure if chompSMS has the option too, but it's much closer to the layout/simplicity of the original app.
Yeah from my research on the issue Froyo will in fact fix this issue...here's to hoping it will come out some time soon for SGS!!! I'm tired of copy pasting my long texts into Handcent SMS :/ it caused a disastrous mis-send recently )
I have yet to try ChompSMS..I'll give it a go later and report the results. If it does look better and has that feature then I guess it can help me deal better with this issue until Froyo comes out. :O
Anyone who has tried the Froyo beta for SGS willing to report if this issue really is resolved?
Thanks!!!
Still here
This issue is not resolved and is extremely irritating. Surely with all the Dev powar here this could be easily taken care of? I'd do it myself if I knew how...
Can someone please let us know how to stop SMS converting to MMS.
Handcent SMS works perfect for me when I need to type a long sms. But I hate that app and would love to stick to the standard one.
I am also irritated by this problem and could not find a way to deal with it other than dividing it manually; I am running on Froyo and it's there, very frustrating.

I also started using Handcent to deal with this issue and I'm very happy with it.
I find it very much like the stock application.
Its not really an andriod problem but a messaging application problem from samsung
Same here in Slovenia...my recipients also get the “broken message“ text sometimes, folowed by another sms with the txt ive written.
I also hate that if the reception is poor and u cant send an sms or mms, the phone wont retry sending when the reception is back... What gives, dammit?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Did anybody found solution for that?
MindFever, I'm also from Slovenia. Did you have problems with sending mms? It wont sent to Croatia numbers, and sometimes it won't sent to anybody or recieve it from others
Hi I have this very frustrating conversion problem also, handcent is a waste of time. so is orange (my network) they are aware of the problem but say that there is a fix on the way from android but noone knows when!!!!!!! anyone help in the meantime?
Hello!
I too have this very problem on my phone (running Darky's RC4). I don't want to use any 3rd-party application to solve this issue like handcent or chop. Is there a mod or a fix that I could use to fix this problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Same for Galaxy Tab
Hi guys,
I have a galaxy tab and the same problem, checked under froyo and gingerbread. I thinks that in fact it is a Samsung problem and not android. It's just the messaging app that sucks. Waiting for samsung to fix it, I tried handcent and it's ok.
check the modified version here

Aside form the obvious customization to the 2 third party apk's, why does someone choose handcent over chomp and vice versa why choose a third party over the stock?
For me, stock (Sense) is by far the slowest interface of the bunch... it is slow to open, slow to change numbers to names in the conversation list, and after pressing a conversation, slow to load the messages and slow to load the user icons.
I haven't tried chomp, but handcent is very fast. Handcent and Chomp are almost identical. However I believe handcent is slightly more customizable in terms of visual appearance (colors, layout, etc).
You should also consider the AOSP messaging app. It's basically a cleaner, faster version of the Sense messaging app. However, if you want it, it will have to replace the Sense one; you can't have both at the same time.
I was using handcent for quite a while. I do love being able to make all the visual changes in it. I would normally add pics as backgrounds for individual contacts and the make the bubbles near transparent so messages show up over their pics. Lately on 2.2 I've been using the stock message app. No particular reason. It's simple, no frills SMS. Really the nice thing on the 2.2 Roms is that you can automatically clean your messages to a certain number per thread. That setting applies no matter which app. I have never used chomp so have no take on it.

I have used all 3 recently on cm6. I have stuck with stock because its simple and fast. I'm also the kind of person that turns off all the eye candy on my computers operating systems. Would rather it be put to speed that visuals

I haven't used chomp, well, at least not on android. But I didn't like it at all on my blackberry. I also am using the stock messaging app on cm6. I have no problems or lags while using the stock app. But when using the sense messaging app, I find it to have unacceptable and unusable lag and freezes. Which is the whole reason I rooted my phone. And I don't regret it at all!
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
On AOSP roms I used stock but on sense roms I use handcent.
The stock one on sense is just really slow unless you constantly delete your sms/mms. You don't have that problem using handcent or chomp.
I am not sure why I picked handcent over chomp but I didn't use chomp very long before switching to handcent. It could of been the customization on handcent.
I started using Handcent on my Hero to combat the partial wake issue the stock Messages app had back on 1.5, and have gotten so accustomed to it I see no reason to go back. Plus, I've recently discovered and fallen in love with Handcent's Quick Reply popup feature.
Also, now that I'm using the HTC_IME keyboard on Fresh, all lag when typing messages in Handcent has disappeared.
I should have rooted & ROMed a long time ago. ;P

I've posted this question in the HTC ONE forum on AndroidCentral as well, but I haven't had any responses yet. I'd love to see if this is an HTC ONE related issue, or if it's possibly just an issue with my wife's phone specifically.
Any help or insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/271163-using-share-send-pictures-via-messaging-app.html
I picked up an HTC One for my wife yesterday and she tinkered with it all evening yesterday. One thing she noticed that I was unable to answer was sending pictures using the SHARE option. Sure, you can open up the default text messaging app and send a picture, but typically she'll share Facebook messages or share multiple photos from an app like QuickPic and then select MESSAGING to send the photos. Right now, it's forcing her to save the pictures, then open the messaging app and attach them.
I looked myself and noticed there is a very limited number of apps available under the SHARE option when you're trying to share an image from any app (Gallery, QuickPic, Facebook, etc). There does not seem to be a way of sharing images (single or multiple) directly from the image viewer or original app, you have to open the messenger app and then add them one by one.
I even tried downloading AndMade Share, but that showed the same limited list of apps to share with.
Am I missing something? I looked through the list of messaging settings, tried searching online here and on XDA, and couldn't find any mention of this issue. I'd rather not install a 3rd party messaging app to gain this ability, but if it's required then so be it.
As a side note, she's loving the phone overall. The camera is stellar and getting the phone for $169 at Costco was a bonus as well (even came with a free fitted transulucent plastic case, which was nice). The HTC included ear buds were also very nice. Overall, very impressed with the phone and included goodies.
in pic gallery go to share at the bottom it says more press that i get 11 options im not on facbook or twitter so i dont get them up i get messages mail gmail bluetooth dropbox and so on hope that helps

Thanks for the response. I'll take a look at her phone when she gets home tonight.
I tried that last night and the items I got were:
Send to AT&T Locker
Gmail
Email
Facebook
Picasa
Dropbox
and a few others.
I'll post a screen cap if it still isn't working.
Just seems odd that even with Andmade Share MESSAGES wasn't showing. Maybe I was just not seeing it in the list on the phone. That's entirely possible, as we had just got back into town last night when this occurred.

Looks like you can use Share to send one picture via the stock Gallery app, but no luck sharing with QuickPic (single or multiple selected photos) or Facebook to the stock messaging app.
Here are screen caps of the QuickPic SHARE options. Options are similar within Facebook as well.
Just an update:
I e-mailed the developer for QuickPic to mention the issue my wife was having with her HTC one. They responded that it's an issue with the HTC Messaging app. According to him, HTC limits which apps can share pictures with the messaging app.
Looks like the answer will be to use a non-stock messenger.
Same issue. I want to send memes from an app, but don't get the option unless I save to gallery. Third party messenger it is, I guess.

Its stupid things like this that give everyone a reason to bash android as a whole. I cannot wait for an aosp ROM to become available for this thing.CComing from aokp on my nexus is making me frustrated with sense.
And why? ?
I'm using Facebook messenger app. Crazy, I know.
The Why: Because I already have it for the occasional FB message, so I thought I would give it a try. It's not bad, and I like the chat heads. I don't share anything too personal over it, so I'm not concerned. One day I might stop being lazy and try some others out.
Google Messages works a treat for my usage...
Textra ftw. No other texting app better, none as customizable. I also use WhatsApp for friends out of the USA and for sending video and photos to my most talked to friends

I use Google Messages right now but I do miss the customization that Textra offered and how fast and smooth it is but the one major thing that prevents me from using it every time is the lack of archiving message threads feature that text apps like pulse and messages have. It keeps me away cause sometimes I want to delete a message thread but often times I just want to archive it cause there may be images, information, or just the fact that I want to see my text history with that person. Which Textra would add this feature instead of just the deleting the whole thread.
Textra here too
Fast and simple and heavily customisable
Whats app, facebook messenger.

Yes I agree I gave it 3 stars and mentioned this in my review to the developer. I told them it would be a 5 star if there was a way to backup and restore or archive them as to not lose them from phone to phone or in cases you need to data reset your phone. They responded to me and said they would look into it and nothing... this was about 2 years ago.
Textra is love, Textra is life, no other compromise.
Google messages. I have used textra alot before. But just switched to Google and it's been smooth and exactly what I need.
Google Messages for me.
Smooth, useful features, and web messaging from other devices.
As a non US résident, I don't have access to those fancy text apps nevermind to a supercharged network !
Hence, where I am from, texting is a thing of the past!
I use Telegram which is, in my opinion, light years ahead it's competition in terms of features and one of the last really secure platform there is! (Among with signal)
+ Channels
Google messages, Whatsapps and Telegram.
Used to use textra, then chompsms, now pulse.
I got tired of backing up my messages when changing phones (I switch between 3 at least once a week.)
Pulse auto syncs messages and restores automatically upon a new login.

You guys use text messaging? Damn...
It's 2019, use Signal.
Using Google messages, simple, works for me and has a web client for the rare time I don't have my phone next to me
Textra
Great app no issues
Using the stock messaging app for the time being but considering moving to google messaging app because of the web client, which was very convenient back when I had my Nokia 6.1
Textra , it's awesome!
