I've had my UK Galaxy Tab (GT-P1000) for quite some time and for almost all that time, i've been waiting for the damn 2.3 update. I pretty much check Kies most mornings but as yet, like many, I've never had the notification of update at all.
I've noticed that the 2.3 update file (P1000XXJQ1) is available at the Galaxy Tab forum but if I update using Odin, will it stop me reverting back to 2.2 or getting 'official' updates via Kies after I've reverted back to 2.2?
Finally, does this really matter if I don't get updated by Kies anymore? Realistically, the 2.3 update is likely to be the last update that the Tab is going to see anyway so is there any reason why I should not update using Odin and be damned?!
I'm in the same boat. XEU seems to have been forgotten. Can't help with the ODIN/Root. Instructions seem fragmented to say the least. If an idiot's guide is out there I might try it.
Hi Ravi,
I am in the same boat as you. I am tired of waiting for the upgrade and am considering buying the new Sony Tablet S or even wait for the Sony Tablet P. I would prefer to upgrade because I have the Samsung Keyboard and also the HDMI charging dock.
My firmware version is PDA:JMI /PHONE:JMA / CSC:JM5 (XEU)
The only thing that stops me is that I am not 100% sure which files I should download. I have checked out many sites but guess I am not confident enough yet!
I wish Samsung would get a move on!!

Guys, forget kies, and forget Samsung. I've been on 2.3 since I got my tab 4 months ago and now I'm on overcomes kratos ROM. Honeycomb builds have been coming and going, you can get stock 2.3 and pretty soon ICS will be developed by some amazing devs on here. Head into the dev section and don't look back!
That's my opinion anyway

Thanks Biffroy but what I'm worried about is that if I install a custom ROM and at some point decide to switch back to a stock ROM (maybe to sell the Tab or something) will I be selling something that cant be updated using Kies?
I know it's a bit corny these days but I'd feel bad about passing something on to someone who couldn't update it!!
Also, is there an idiots guide to upgrading to this ROM - i'm pretty useless when it comes to technical stuff so I really would need an idiot's guide..

there is no such thing as an "idiot's guide" when it comes to ROM flashing as it is not recommended for complete newbies.
what I suggested is to read the instruction in here. In my opinion the guide is the most comprehensive of all instructions found anywhere. If reading the guide you still find it too complicated then I suggest you let somebody else do it for you or else be content with froyo.
There is also no big problem if you want to get back to froyo later,I've done it several times, but then you said you don't know how to flash so I guess you are stuck on froyo.
Have you tried bringing your tab to samsung service center in your area?

I recently bought a tab in Tesco (got it cheap). Have been in contact with Samsung regarding the update. Seems to be conflicting info, via the online support was told that GB had been released, but I would need to take into service center for them to do the update. Just had a call from a Samsung technician who told me no update has been released for the tab, except for units on Three and from CPW. I am expecting a follow up call to advise when an "official" update will be made available via KIES.
Hi, i have a suggestion for you to update to Gingerbread, have you ever tried the overcome experience? It's awesome....try to update to gingerbread with it, i bet you won't regret

Going back to stock froyo is easy enough and kies won't know the difference if you do it right. We are ALL newbies at one time, I've only been doing this for less than a year, started with my sgs phone as Samsung were taking there time releasing 2,3 and I'm very impatient I've (soft) bricked my phone and tab dozens of times, it's trial and error and very confusing. I am no where near being someone who "knows his stuff" I just love playing around. Go into the dev section and take a look. If you follow the guides from team Overcome and manage to get kratos on your tab, you will be a very happy bunny. There is a bootloader patch in the "stickies" section that you need to read too
This is hard work if your new, but if you follow the overcome guide you should be OK. You're more than welcome to ask me more questions but remember- I'm still a newbie myself and not a dev! I am however glad for messing up and bricking my phone and tab so many times- it's how you learn!
Good luck!

Guess we all have to dive in at some point!!
Thanks again for the advice.

I am going to try too after the weekend, perhaps Monday! Please can I be selfish and ask you to post here how you got on?
I will post my expereinces too!

No worries i'm really interested to know how you both get on so let me know!!!
happy flashing!
I would offer the following:
First, root your device. Get Superuser installed. There is Superoneclick, or I believe Chainfire's CFRoot.
Then back-up your system! Very important, so that you can go back to your specific firmware. (I didn't do this). I believe Rotohammer has a back-up utility ?.
Then install the ROM of your choice.
Overcome instructions are very detailed, and easy to follow.
Good luck!
easy question!
if all went smoothly, how long can this update to an Overcome Rom expect to take?

I'd already read that thanks, unless the reader has a detailed understanding of the numerous references contained within frankly it says nothing......
As I asked in my original post (rephrased) what's the main objective of the ROM? Is it "....increased speed/more stability/better customisation/more sex appeal...."
The above list would make sense if there was an explanatory comment for each item, for example what does "Fully Deodexed" mean and why do I need it?
I just want a 'Top Line' overview comment and then if I want to dig further the options above would be required.......

Thing To Note:
1. First port for the ULF for the Vibrant
2. Based off I9000 kernel source
3. As far as we know, there is only one bug present which is listed below
4. Only tested on Team Whiskey Obsidian and Onyx roms - should be compatible with other roms, but flash at your own risk
Team Whiskey Universal LagFix Kernel Features
- Integrated Flashing with Universal Lag Fix system. (Source by sztupy @ XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814228, Ported by TeamWhiskey)
- All lagfixes and tweaks activated directly within clockwork advanced menu
- MULTIPLE lagfix options, new and old
- Integrated TW logo
- 3e recovery built into kernel
- No longer required to disable lagfixes before flashing
- Enable/disable back light notifications
- Option to switch to 2e recovery
- Option to install Superuser
- Enable/disable I/O scheduler tweaks
- Enable/disable VM management tweaks
- Enable/disable kernel scheduler tweaks
- Enable/disable misc. tweaks
- Reboot into download mode
- Much more
How To Utilize Universal LagFix Kernel:
1. Flash ROM as you normally would via clockwork recovery
2. Let device boot and then reboot back into clockwork recovery
3. Once in recovery, you will now see 2 new options at the bottom
4. Within the new menus, you will find options to enable/disable certain features and an assortment of lagfixes
5. Enabling/disabling features and tweaks are fairly self explanatory, so have fun with those.
6. Lagfixes are also fairly simple, however, if you are not extremely familiar with them, I suggest sticking to what you know such as the OCLF or voodoo options
7. Once you select the lagfix you want, you will see that your current configuration is updated. You must then go back and select reboot.
8. It will kick you back into clockwork very quickly and give you options before converting your partitions to your selected lagfix. I suggest you pick the first one which creates a backup and restore of your system.
9. Your device will now convert your partition, reboot your phone, and you're done!
Known Issues:
PLEASE READ PLEASE READ PLEASE READ PLEASE READ
- Currently, there is a VERY small percentage of users who have reported that their internal sd partition has been wiped. This is happening to roughly 1/20 people who flash 4.2 with the universal lag fix. If this happens, you will have to odin back to JFD and then upgrade back to 4.2 or any version of your choice. The kernel works very well, however, this is the first time this source and recovery modding has been ported to the Vibrant. None of my dev team has had this happen to any of us so we unfortunately cannot reproduce the problem and pinpoint the problem. We are thinking its hardware related at the moment. Please flash this at your own risk. If it does work for you, you'll love it, trust me! If you're one of the unfortunate ones that gets your internal wiped, well, I apologize, but you've been warned. I suggest ONLY experienced users download the rom with the ULF included. All others should download 4.2 w/stock kernel.
Update:
For those VERY VERY few unfortunate people who get their internal sdcard partition wiped, we have confirmation that using odin, going back to JFD, then back to Obsidian/Onyx 4.2 works fine. Everyone that has done this has had no further issues regarding the wipe issue.
Download:
Team Whiskey Universal LagFix Kernel
This will still be accessable for reference or testing purposes, but is not recommended as a daily driver or use kernel.
If you are one of the ones that had serious issues with ULF properly flashing we are very sorry that you are having those issues. We have pulled the ULF kernel due to its inconsistant flashing and are moving forwards with a few different concepts. If you are still having issues with this kernel and going back to normal please visit Sombionix or Viralblack in the TeamWhiskey IRC channel.

I second this. So far my phone is flying again. Dunno why, but v3.0 seem to lag even with voodoo. Now with v4.2 it is flying with NO lag whatsoever .
Oh yea, just noticed my external card doesn't mount anymore too. It mounts as a cd drive and I can't write to it.
I assume I flash this on top of Macnut R12 ?
How is the batt life ?

Confirmed. I am running stock JK2 and could previously mount my external sd to the computer. After flashing ULF kernel and converting to JFS overkill it now mounts as a cd drive.
As far as everything else goes it's amazing. Great work guys. I was using i9000 version a couple months ago; so nice to finally have the correct buttong mapping
If this is based on the I9000 sources, they don't include support for our GPS chipset - right? Did you port the GPS drivers from the Vibrant 2.6.29 sources?
The only thing is left is to merge this with Eugene's OC (A5) and this is going to be a monster!
just flashed this kernel and am still waiting to see a big difference on onyx ver. 3 Have to see if I can get a net connection to dl the v4 . hope there's more than what's listed in the change log.
This will be so much more legit when you OC
Which option is everyone using? I have the JFS overkill, but battery life isn't good.

How'd you do it? I'm just curious, since I didn't think there was source for the drivers in later kernels, and I didn't know whether the old GPS drivers would work.
Flashed over Macnut 12, works perfect. Just wanted to confirm for those who want to try, before flooding with a lot of questions.
Great work. Absolutely great.

I've tried several and this is the best for me.
This doesn't want to be in the development thread.....
I always ended up back on the doc's rom after trying others..
Use Voodoo 5 with any froyo rom and the phone will fly. Roms and tweaks are not making big differeces in speed. Only with lagfix you can feel the differnce and one of the easiest and fastest is Voodoo 5.
Any of DocRambone's bare-bones Rom with ULK kernel. All kernel tweaks on, JFS + EXT2 binds no journaling.

CyanogenMod 6.1 BETA2... Fastest ROM and nicest to use, unfortunately takes a huge chunk of functionality away while the ROM developers are cleaning up Samsung's messy programming.
Once it's a Release Candidate stage, I think this will be the way to go. They also might be able to get Gingerbread out faster than Samsung. Here's hoping.
i guess for a normal phone user(not like me or many ppl here), want the phone work as a phone should, go for doc's jpo v8 plus hardcore's k10X kernel with gps fix, you can't be wrong.
usze nany rom, especially doc's 9.01 and then flash the YA-OK kernel.
very stable very fast and smooth.
lagfix EXT4/EXT2 no binds.
you will have at least 2100 quadrant.
In fact I just flashed with KIES froyo, then added root, and clockwork, and then the kernel.
using launcher pro (purchased) I added the DENA v2 theme and it looks very nice.

Rombie ROM v2
thanks for all your help and time.
This could be a very informative thread but IMHO, it needs to be limited to only what works with some caveats. This should be a thread about what works.
If your ROM is in beta - don't recommend it! If it crashing constantly or throwing up FCs, don't recommend it! If the GPS doesn't work, don't recommend it.
Quadrant scores mean nothing - when you got your phone, it worked but had some lag. Now, with Froyo, lag has virtually been eliminated. Even the ROM dev are saying you don't need a lagfix in many cases as their ROM is so smooth.
There are nothing but ROM junkies in the dev forum; I'm one of them - load it on the phone crash it, load it on the phone crash it! But I didn't do this on my girlfriend's phone because I didn't want her calling me to fix it. There are a lot of people tiring of this and just want it to work. I admit the wow factor is wearing off for me. I'm leaning towards finding what works but I need some adrenalin... Some caveats?
1) Phone - no crashing/restarting daily
2) FC - limited; these will always happen occassionally our computers
3) GPS - good signal and lock
Without lagfix, I can recommend:
Doc's rom: v9.0.1_BUJP8 - very smooth, no lag fix required (quadrant 900+)
Modem ZSJPE (Hong Kong release) - very quick to lock on, very accuarate
BTW, our company developes GPS software for golfers always testing this!
My need for speed tells me to test the lagfix. If this thread continues, I'll be back...

3. Rooted using SuperOneClick. Thanks ShortFuse
4. Titanium Backup. Thanks Joel
5. Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine. Thanks Android Central
6. Captivate Toolbox. Thanks Bay_wolf
7. Installed wireless tether 2.0.7 Thanks harald.mue, ulfada
8 Pimped my Captivate- Thanks systoxity, nbs11, and other XDA developers.
Now I'm to the point to ROM or not to ROM. Everything is working great. Further I am hesitant about the possibility of bricking my phone. Should I go for it? What ROM to use? What program to get ROM on phone?
Many thanks in advance.

It really just comes down to if you like your Captivate the way it is. If you aren't happy with the performance you get from it then try a few out. I recommend Cognition for a stock like experience and Serendipity for the most stable and kept up to date ROM.
This really doesn't belong in this section. It should have been posted in the General or the Q&A sections.
Well what you have done in all those steps, other then Titbu is actually done in one step by flashing a rom.
If you pay attention to the steps your risk of bricking is minimal. Just read all the rom threads and see which one floats your boat. Cognition 4.1.1 is a very stable rom. Firefly is another stable rom. You might like Fusion also as that and Cog are based off the curren kcb1 release from att.
You will need odin 1 click to return to stock. You will have to download Rom Manager and install Clockwork recovery. That puts an update.zip on your phone that boots you into recovery mode so you can flash a rom. Once you put clockwork on the phone its best to copy the udate.zip to your comp or to an ext sd card so you can just move it over after you flash back to stock when you updated roms.
First and foremost is read as much as you can before doing anything.
Thanks for the brief input. It was not my intent to post in the wrong forum. I'll repost in the Q/A.
Pm a mod and have them move it instead of double posting.

The answer is Yes.
like they said above you could have done by flashing but you would still need root and rom manager first which if you already have 2.2 means flashing a kernel via .tar which used to mean odin but now we have neldars app. so it's not really one step, even on 2.1 noone is doing signed .zips that run in 2e recovery so you still need to root and install cwmrecovery.
basically roms have some nice features like getting rid of tw mms which many versions of have bugs and timing errors that can cause double messages or incorrect order of messages or in some cases messages to the wrong contact, if you dont have that issue now flashing a rom with tw mms may cause it or it may not. aosp mms is safer but only works with samsung lockscreens on some roms, watch for that if you like the puzzle piece functionality. but there may be many enhancements like removed bloat(unless you like the samsung bloatware) minfree tweeks, mobile ap which may be more stable than using an app for wifi hotspot, plus random shortcuts ect.ect. many of these things you can do but some are features of the base rom and require flashing, 2.2.1 baseroms are smoth as butter, especially the ones from china and 2.2.1 kernels will make the phone benchmark better.
then there is kernels which you can flash now without the rom, kernels can make the phone feel smoother and the screen brighter and better colors and add volume to the headphone amp which i dont recommend because mine clips at anything above the stock setting. also there is undervolt and overclock ect... i would recomend maybe a speedmod kernel or glitterballs work, some galaxy s phones can not exceed 1.2 ghz i dont know of anyone that cant overclock but for me 1.2 is 100% stable 1.28 is 90% stable 1.3 is about the same maybe a bit more stable and 1.4 is about 30% stable i can do it but need to be really carefull about what's running and for how long, not really usable. kernels other than glitterballs mat cause your phone to die while charging but i here the sucker punch kernel has a lower occurrence of that than past kernels. speed mod is not overclock and is safe and makes a big difference!
then there is modem.bins and gps. the two are related. if you have good gps now flashing a modem.bin can make that go away and vise/versa there isn't any rules as to what works/doesn't because every phone is different. but other than gps you need to match a captivate rom to a captivate modem. this is because on north american captivate roms changing the modem and kernel to a non captivate version will disable bluetooth calling.
then there is hsupa, it's a bit over rated in a good service area, my isp gives me about the upload bandwith at home that i get without hsupa, my home internet is fine for browsing but im not hosting any files. on the otherhand it may help in lower service areas somewhat or if you tether multiple devices. to enable huspa you need a non north american captivate rom and kernel and modem.bin, you need to decide if that is important and at a slight risk of losing some gps performance as it is so inconsistent it is hard to tell what may or may not work for you.
Moved to Q&A as not android development
I love di11igaffs roms and espyel roms they are better than stock froyo hands down id flash u wont be sorry
sent from cappy with di11i rom
Hi, guys.
To save everyone's time, I'll try to keep this as simple and to the point as i possibly can (which for those of you who know me, is a bit hard... lol). I also want to thank each and everyone of you who takes the time to answer in advance.
So, apparently, Samsung rolled out GB for TPH sometime around last week or so. However, KIES refuses to update my phone, for whatever reason (I suspect it may have something to do with when I tried Darky's ROM, which messed up the product code, but it may be something else entirely). No matter what I do (including a factory reset to stock TPH 2.2.1, which is what I have now), the "upgrade firmware" option is not available.
I've just about had it on waiting, so I'm ready to take matters on my own hands.
I'd like to install either the stock TPH 2.3.3 firmware (I9000XWJVH/I9000OXXJV9/I9000XXJVO/I9000XWJVH) (I'm missing a download link, though), or finally move on to something a bit better, like 2.3.4 with the following characteristics:
- Near stock (some ROMs I've seen are way too customized, I actually don't mind most of the stock stuff, including apps people don't like using, like AllShare and similar);
- UV and UC-ready;
- English and Portuguese input (Swype included) and menu languages;
- Preferably, Portugal-compatible CSC, (standard PT-available modem seems good in terms of battery life, so no special requirement there);
- If available (wishful thinking), SIP and Skype integrated in the dialer (I believe SIP was a 2.3 feature, right?);
- Full Market access;
- Easy to upgrade, if possible.
Also, I'm perfectly OK with a 2-step approach (like loading 2.3.4 and then a custom kernel).
OK, I think that's about it. With so many ROMs available, I get lost on the different features, so I need help from people more experienced than me.
So, fire away, guys. What are your options on this one? And again, thank you in advance!
Miguel
Check out the following links:
1 SIP integrated for deodexed Gingerbread ROMs from Samsung (2.3.3 & 2.3.4)
2 [CWM and Odin][Latest ROM: XXJVQ, UGKG3, XWJVN] Deodexed stock firmware collection
3 Juwe's Smart Edition > v5.3 XXJVR Based On Official Android 2.3.4 <
4 Juicy Ginger 3.1
5 XXJVR HYBRID v 2.0
6 MilkyS MOD
Skype in my knowledge is not integrated in to the dialer in any of these.
OC/UC/UV all are kernel features and all the custom roms have good kernels. Best OC/UV kernels are Semaphore,Talon & Galaxian. U can use neldars SGS kernel flasher to change rhem any time for a mix'n'match.
The last 3 are custom roms with all the essential apps, full market access, SIP integration and most of the stock apps.
I think Hybrid will be a good choice for you as its heavily loaded.
Milky Mod has swype in many languages.
Check them out and hope you find your pick. Hope this narrows down ur choices.
P.S - My favorite is Juwe's Smart Edition! Ultra stable, Smooth & Fast
Thanks, DonVito!
That is A LOT of information to get through, all right! I'm checking the pages to see about supported languages, but right now MilkyS seems my best option, especially because it seems the only one where Portuguese is a Swype language, and it may be installed directly over Froyo.
I'll check it out, and also the apparent absence of a product code on my phone (which may be why KIES refuses to upgrade my firmware, and a proof messing with Darky's ROM might not have been such a good idea...). I'll probably try re-setting my product code to TPH and check KIES, but I'l probably go ahead and jump directly to 2.3.4 , these custom ROMs seem to be very good.
One last thing, though: given my current firmware (I9000XWJVH/I9000OXXJV9/I9000XXJVO/I9000XWJVH, I forgot to specify this one is not the current stock TPH GB firmware), which firmware should I get from Samfirmware? There are WAY too many options, and I simply cannot get the hang of translating standard Samsung firmware codes to the SGS firmware packages...
Again, thanks for the input!
Miguel
Hi guys! I'm new here in this forums and I'm buying my new SGS+ in a couple of weeks. I can see there aren't that many ROMS and custom firmwares, but the ones that exist are very good! I want to know if the official ROMS are fast and good for everyday usage, gaming and listening to music. I know that the custom ROMs like Cranium and BroodRom are super fast, but I always prefer official firmware. Please express your opinion and give me a suggestion. I have experience with flashing a SGS+, so it's not a problem for me.
Well, these custom ROMs are in fact just modded stock ROMs. So you can get some added AOSP apps and removed bloatware. CM development is really difficult as some devs already bricked their phones.
I personally wouldn't buy it again.
It's a quite decent phone but nothing special imo.

I know they're just soft-mods, but people say they're faster than official ROMs, because they contain some tweaks.
Yes, thats right. If you have some knowledge you could also tweak the stock ROM yourself as you like it. (Apart from things like CWM recovery etc.)
If you don't need all those Samsung bloatware then you could flash one of the ROMs you like.

Thank you all for your opinions! I had a very positive experience with one of your ROMs, so I think I will go for BroodROM.
BroodROM RC2 with the Cranium Kernel v6 1900MHz
That way you can overclock as you wish with the "no frills cpu control" app and set governors + i/o scheduler.
At least thats what i have on my SGS+ and i'm very happy with it
here's a benchmark screenshot of mine
Help me gusta!!

Besides I've Already Done The Rooting Procedure At forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Plus/GT-I9001 For My Samsung Galaxy S+ I9001. this is my first time but before i start doing something on my my phone i should ask someone like you who can give me a better advices and other tips in things like this.
-----------------------------------------------------------I Was Hoping I Can Find a Better & Clear Instruction's Installing Cranium Rc9 + Rc9 Kernel OR BroodRom + Cranium Kernel v6 1900MHz for my SGS+ I9001 From You DEVs!
