ROM recommendation,
I know that the official 2.2 is not yet out, but I had enough of "Low on Space" on my Milestone and I would really like to use options like SendToPhone and App2SD.
I was thinking to update with one of the existing ROMs for XDA...but I don't know what to choose...I like Dexter's 2.2 ROMs but I also saw that Telus V5 is very fast and light (or why not a CyanogenMod 6 for Milestone...?! ).
Having in mind the flowing criteria that are important for me :
-stability
-speedy and light on memory consumption
-2.2 if possible (app2sd and SendToPhone)
-fair battery consumption
what ROM would you recommend me ?
Thank you in advance

Personally, I would recommend with the GOT 2.2.1 release the Cyanogenmod6...
Also, check my post about the battery life.
GOT 2.2.1, easily in my opinion =]
fast, stable, decent battery life and there are some awesome themes out there =D
hope i helped!
Thank you for your answers , I was just about to flash MotoFrenzy (Froyo 2.2 for milestone). I will try to see between this two....
and another question...why is so important to uninstall all the applications ? In this case can I use a backup application (Titanium backup Pro) to quickly reinstall al my apps with app data on my milestone ?

Yes...You can backup all your installed apps + data with Titanium backup in 2.1 and restore the backup in 2.2 ... You should not back-up system data or system apps....just the apps installed by you...
MotoFrenzy is not a full 2.2 ROM. it's just a ROM with 2.2 features based on 2.1 kernel so you wont have the full 2.2 experience on your phone...
I recommend as I said earlier GOT 2.2.1 + CM6
Flash the GOT 2.2.1 .sbf and you are good to go!
Also, Overclock (if you haven't done that already) your Milestone for more speed.
I also used Cronos Froyo ROM before GOT leak came out and I was really satisfied with the outcome. I believe he is making a new ROM right now, based on the 2.2.1 GOT.
I'm still with the stock froyo and about to upgrade.
But if i upgrade to CyanogenMod-6.1
1. How i can make sure that i keep all my applications and settings
2. how to understand if i need to update the radio as well
3. is there a point to upgrade now when gingerbread is just behind the corner and how long usually takes Cyanogen to incorporate the new build in his mod?
No body knows when Gingerbread will really be available for N1.
Just nandroid backup what you have now and flash back when GB is here.
Do a Nandroid backup & Titanium backup.
You can see your radio build at "settings-about phone-baseband version". The current radio is 5.08.00.04 or korean. Look at the android developement section.
Imo, you better try cm 6.1 first. Because, as i know of, there are no major change in gingerbread. But, who knows?
Hope it helps

there are huge underlying changes in gingerbread....
also latest stock radio is 4.06. the next official radio update is not out yet. 4.06 is fine with cyan. personally, seeing as gingerbread is probably gonna be hitting in the next few days (hopefully) i would wait
Thank you all!
What's the difference between Nandroid backup & Titanium backup?
How long took Cyanogen to implement 2.2 froyo in his rom?
If it's not too much i guess i flash now and then just re-flash with the gingerbread based cyanogen rom?

A nandroid backup is a complete backup of your rom. if you were to restore a nandroid, your phone will be exactly as it was when you did the backup, as if you took a snapshot in time. This allows you to try out different roms, or flash changes to your rom with low risk, as you can always revert.
A titanium backup backs your apps and data to your SD card, it allows you to move between roms and take your apps, the data in your apps, and your settings with you.

If it is anything like last time, google will push the OTA update, then drop the source code a few weeks later, give the Cyanogenmod team a few weeks to put out a release candidate. I'd expect you should be able to just flash the upgrade directly.
Btw, the Titanium back-up doesn't really seem to back up everything
For example i have to re-configure all my settings, desktops, re-set my accounts and it also has missed few applications.
Is that normal or i'm missing something?
other than that, i'm now happy with cyanogenmod 6.1, it's pretty cool
Are you backing up apps only or apps + user's data ect...
I heard it's better to just restore apps and re-enter data as
that work better. I don't know I've always had good luck restoring
users data.
there are a ton of awesome things in cyanogen 6.1 like HD video recording and FM radio. definitley worth the upgrade now, especially since it will be at least a month after gingerbread is released before cyan team gets something out. maybe longer cause the source isnt necessarily released the same day as the ROM. with froyo i think it was 1-2 months after release till cyan came out.
sorry i guess i didnt understand what you were saying about gingerbread, but if you want a stock gingerbread rom then it should be out within a few days (hopefully)
however, the source and cm gingerbread probably wont be out for a month till then.
basically, if you want root, you should go ahead and go for it now just in case 2.3 makes it harder to root without unlocking the bootloader. a cm based gingerbread wont be out for a while. you can always upgrade to a gingerbread cm later anyway.
if you want to stay stock and see if you like gingerbread then just wait lol
I'm with cyanogen now and happier than ever.
It's soo good that i can gladly wait till they implement rom with gingerbread as well.
p.s.
Gingerbread seems to be kinda ugly anyway

At least with root, when you do get gingerbread you can change the colour scheme and theme it anyway

True, there are quite a lot of changes 'under the hood'.
4.06 is only still the latest official radio in the US. The ones sold in the rest of the world get 5.x-radios in their updates and have so since FRF91. They are also hardware-identical. As you say though, any radio from 4.06 and onwards is CM6-compatible.
Even though I hope Gingerbread will be released in a couple of days, perhaps when the Nexus S is released, but it could just as well take more time than that. CM 6.1 is a good way to enjoy the time until that happens.
Hi Guys
I've been a long time user of the Kang-o-rama ROMs. I've got the latest flashed on there (2.3.7) but I'm thinking of giving my Sexxy Nexxy one last hurrah by flashging MIUI.
I'm after a ROM that will allow me to use S2E instead of A2SD - any ideas on which to try?
Thanks in advance
I would recommend MIUI for Nexus One. It's the only ROM that offers most of Sense/TouchWiz functionality that CM/AOSP builds lack, while staying small-sized and fast.
OK - care to link me to your preferred ROM?

I am a long time Miui user, and don't know of any of the Miui builds that use S2E. I have been tempted to try it and see if it works, but have stuck with a2sd+. Miui has A2SD+ built in and as long as you have an ext3 partition and run "a2sd install" in terminal after loading the rom, it works fine.
Lately I have been using the straight miui.com rom; but have also extensively used miui.us and miui android. The latest build as of today for the N1 is 1.11.18, but they are updated weekly. 1.11.18 has been really solid for me, and everything seems to be working on the miui.com rom.
If you use the miui.com rom, go to google translate and load the site there so you can download the rom. Otherwise use the miui.us,miuiandroid.com or miui scotland for english builds.

I am really not sure if S2E will work with MIUI. It comes with A2SD (I think the plus version) by default. After installing the ROM just run a2sd reinstall from Terminal Emulator. It works like a charm for me!
There are many good things about MIUI. It has the right balance of performance and being eye-candy. Good alternative to CM7. They release weekly builds and generally the bugs get fixed soon.
If you like Sense UI, then you can try HyperSense as well. I am seeing good progress on that and probably not the most stable version at this point. But it sounds promising.
I am currently running MIUI (after trying almost every ROM out there!!)
Hello all,
I've purchased this tablet last Saturday. I have read a couple of threads on this forum and now I've got a couple of questions. Note that I am an absolute noob on rooting and roms.
1. What are the benefits of rooting the device?
2. If I would root the tablet, is it still possible to receive the software updates from Samsung? (i.e. when ICS is finally rolled out officially).
3. What ROM would you guys recommend? A version of ICS or the Overcome version?
4. Is it easy to get back to the Stock version?
I hope you guys can help me!
Thanks in advance!

I have rooted my Tab for one reason and one reason only.... I wanted to use What'sapp on it and for that it needed to be rooted. If you are rooted you can remove system apps. I have always ran custom roms on my phones but have held off changing the rom of my Tab, but only cuz I don't wanna have to sort out all my apps etc out. You will still get updates from Samsung whilst being rooted.
1. What are the benefits of rooting the device?
To numerous to list, not the least of which is the list of apps I run that require root and the flexibility to make customizations otherwise not possible.
2. If I would root the tablet, is it still possible to receive the software updates from Samsung? (i.e. when ICS is finally rolled out officially).
Yes.
3. What ROM would you guys recommend? A version of ICS or the Overcome version?
Galaxian Soup or CM9, both of which are ICS.
4. Is it easy to get back to the Stock version?
Yes, if you also install Clockworkmod Recovery and do a nandroid backup. But chances are you won't want to. It becomes an entirely new device under ICS. (But backup your stock ROM anyway.)

Thanks for the info! I've rooted the device and installed Clockworkmod recovery. Now I plan on installing ICS tonight (battery was almost empty so I figured I should charge it first before putting on a different ROM)
What are the differences between the Galaxian Soup and CM9? Also is it recommended to install the google apps zip?
Thanks again!
Be aware that the camera does not work on the ICS roms, so if you are going to need the camera then it would be stock rom or Overcome.

i never use gapps. flash it if you use gmail or gtalk or maps or any other google stuff.
i also recommend you to install the latest aokp (b33, which doesn't have a galaxian soup version yet, but you can find the link in the gs thread).
i have cm9 now but it has wifi and Bluetooth issues for me (and some other users). i'm just waiting for galaxian soup to release a 3g version. but you have gt7310 so you're good to go.

Galaxian Soup has two versions for both 7300 & 7310, both updated regularly. The AOSP version is as close to Google's implementation of ICS possible. The AOKP version offers a lot more control of the ROM and has some nice additional features. Safariking has posted his own version of AOKP (7310 only) and I've never used it because I have a 7300.
CM9 is Cyanogenmod's implementation of ICS. It's a lot like stock ICS but has different standard apps with a slightly different feel and a few different controls.
I've tried all three and prefer AOSP over AOKP (probably in the minority here), though I might switch to CM9 for a while just to stay familiar with it.
Yes, you probably will need Google apps and there really isn't a great reason not to have them onboard.
Thanks for the info!
I've just installed the AOSP version with the google apps and it works great! The tab is a lot faster like this!
The only "problem" I have is that the screen goes on and off when I go from landscape to portrait, is that normal?

AFAIK, this has been an issue for Galaxian Soup AOSP since alpha. After months of bouncing between AOSP ICS, and stock, I've finally had enough of touchwiz to last a lifetime. I will be rocking AOSP ICS for a while... I can wait for the Sammy ICS update to resolve all the minor bugs for the ICS roms. When I ran the Alpha ICS rom, I was shocked at the stability and performance of an alpha, and its only gotten better since. Hats off to the Galaxian Soup devs
Hey Guys,
Next Weekend (Friday December 20), I will finally make the jump to Jelly Bean from Gingerbread. I know that Kit Kat is also available, but it is much more buggy than Jelly Bean, and stability is my main goal, which is why I stayed on Gingerbread for so long. My plan for upgrading is this:
-Make a complete backup and snapshot of my device (Nandroid + Titanium Backup + Backup both Internal and External SD Cards to Computer) in case something goes wrong.
-Fully format both internal and external SD Cards (Including second Link2SD Partition in Ubuntu)
-Use AIO Toolkit to upgrade to New bootloader, and set up all new partitions, etc.
-Use AIO Toolkit to flash TWRP 2.6.0.0/ 2.6.3.0 For new bootloader (If it becomes available by the time I flash)
-Wipe Everything in Recovery
-Flash the latest TheROM 26 Stable (Most stable 4.3.1, with awesome extra features), + Kowalski Kernel M1 Stable, but I am keeping a close eye on the 3.1 developments (the 3.1 Hijuni port is too unstable for daily use currently, and Pengus mentions that Kowlaski features are being ported and code is being cleaned up for the Kowalski 3.1 release), so basically, I will make the kernel decision the day of the flashing operation.
-Flash Tonyp's full Non-Neon gapps from the development section
-Flash extra ROM Goodies, like feav's camera mod
-Reboot, let sit for a few minutes, and reboot again after first boot
-Begin setting up ROM/ Kernel and begin installing apps fresh from Google Play, and only restoring data from titanium backup for certain apps like games, etc.
Regarding the above, I have a few questions:
To begin, are the above steps proper? Is there anything that I should add or remove?
Secondly, when the 2.6.3.0 for New bootloader becomes available, it is as simple as flashing the new image through AIO Toolkit with no loss of data?
Lastly, does the Full non-neon gapps by Tonyp contain everything? Is there a better gapps to flash? I want the full Google apps experience, and the included mini-gapps does not contain everything I think.
I know this is a long post, but I really want to make sure I'm doing this right, and hopefully someone can use this thread in the future to do things proper also. Thanks in advance.
hi, I think the steps are correct. changing the bootloader will format the internal sd, but it doesn't matter if you format it before it. If tonyp makes a new twrp available you can flash it through the previous version of it, then you reboot recovery and it will be the updated version. not sure about the gapps question, but it surely contains play store, so you can install the latest version of the Google apps manually from it. good luck.

Yeah. Your steps are fine.
The new 3.1 kernel is awesome. I am using it with TheROM build 25. You might wanna try it.
TonyP's GApps have most of the important Google Apps. It's sufficient, I think.
And, AFAIK, a new recovery doesn't need a data wipe of any kind.
Have fun Flashing and Upgrading!
Sent from my LG-P990 using Tapatalk
Thanks for your answer! I think I will stick with the KK M1 build, and maybe when the 3.1 kernel becomes a bit more stable I will flash it. It's not too big of a deal, because a kernel upgrade is just wiping dalvik and regular caches, installing, and setting up kernel settings, which is a lot less work than a ROM upgrade. I think I will stick with Tonyp's non-neon full gapps, and I'll upgrade the recovery to TWRP 2.6.3.0 newbl whenever it becomes available . Thanks again!

Hello,
I have remebered a question I forgot to ask. Is Pdroid 2.0 supported in TheROM, and if it is, is it stable? Could I just use the auto patcher to add the functionality? Thanks again.

Starting right now!
Hey Guys,
I'm starting the upgrade right now! I will post results after everything is done. I decided to use XPrivacy instead of the newer PDroids, because they contain bugs and are no longer developed. See you guys on the other side.
