I'm gonna install CyanogenMod-6.1 on my daughters stock Nexus One. I've flashed roms and kernels on my Vibrant, but I'm a little nervous about the Nexus.
1. Backup apps with Titanium backup
2. Do a hard reset
3. Root the phone with Superboot
3. Install Rom Manager
4. Install CyanogenMod directly from Rom Manager
5. Restore apps with Titanium Backup
Is this the right method?
Thanks in advance.
Hey
I would recommend using one-click root method. Also, since you aren't rooted already, titanium backup won't work. My recommendation would be the following:
1. Download and install VISIONary from MoDaCO (http://android.modaco.com/content/software/320350/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/)
2. Use temp root in VISIONary.
3. Download Titanium backup from the market and backup all your apps.
4. Download Rom Manager from the market and flash clockwork recovery through it.
5. Download CM 6.1.0 through Rom Manager or however you wish to and flash it through clockwork mod recovery.
6. Restore apps through Titanium backup.
But I'm not sure if VISIONary works with Gingerbread (if you installed the 2.3.3 OTA). You'll have to confirm that from someone.
Regards
Raptor
If you are already on 2.3.3, you only have 2 options to root:
1 - unlock the bootloader and root
2 - revert to an older version of android and root
Both these methods will wipe your data, and the best non-root backup solution seems to be MyBackup. You can also use other apps to backup other things (APN settings, SMS, etc).
I suggest reading the wiki first, and then asking more specific questions...

Thank you for the replies.
It went very simple... the phone had SU installed. Downloaded Rom manager and Titanium backup, backup'd the apps and the stock rom, and then flashed CM6 directly from Rom manager. The whole thing took about 20-mins.
I was a little disappointed with the Quadrant score... it was listed below N1 by around 200 points - even after the 10-min reboot.
The phone does run much more smoothly though.

Did you run Quadrant just once?
If there isn't any improvement over time of use, I suggest a different Kernel.
Flash through recovery.

Thanks. You have any suggestions for a Kernel with CM 6.1.1?

I have it up and running on my X. Got the link from your thread in Rootzwiki. Thanks for releasing this.
I've got this rom on my samsung fascinate, and I have to say, it's the best rom out there. Even better than cm7. Does every single function work with this rom (gps, camera?) And in order to install it, is all I need to be on a rooted .34 and use bootstrap?
Sold my fascinate and my droidx and now both have miui and my HTC device does not. Looks like i have cake on my face.

It's a nice rom, I was on CM7, went to Apex, and then used bootstrap to get to Miui. I heard that the GPS does work(but my phone isn't activated and i can't use wifi to try it myself), I can confirm that the camera(pictures and video) works. as far as rooted .34, I don't know what that means?
thanks for ur quick response. So it's assumed that all the functions are working! I'll put this on my cousin's droid x asap! What I meant was, what were the initial steps that needed to be taken before I install this rom. There are no clear steps that I can find on this post at least.
You're welcome, all I did was use the Droid 2 bootstrapper(since that was what i had, and I was on Apex at the time which I think is a froyo based rom?), and went into recovery and did a factory restore, and installed the zip, and it booted. I took a risk, skipped backing up the rom and stuff before installing MIUI, but yeah make sure to back up the rom and stuff before you use the bootstrapper. I also read that full resolution should be working on the camera, the MIUI camera isn't included though, just the AOSP camera. Also the live wallpaper(only one on there) works.

I understand this runs the froyo kernel so im on liberty 2.1 can i bootstrap to recovery and flash this? Oh and do I need google apps as well?
Edit: Do I need to sbf back to stock then to cm7 then to miui?
Which version of Android is Liberty 2.1 based on(not sure if it matters as much as which kernel it's based on, if someone will clear it up for me), and which kernel is it based on? I don't know much about that rom. I know that at least the Market and Google Talk are included, Gmail is in there also(don't know if that's something that wouldn't be in a custom rom ie CM7).
EDIT: You should be able to install it from rooted froyo at least, but it would be good to find out if you could do it from Liberty, so you won't waste your time just in case you can.
Its 2.2 and I couldnt get it to install so i sbf'd back to stock and trying again.
Have you got it running? EDIT: This is Juanito216, i didn't know my sisters account was logged in lol.
Not booting apparently you need d2 bootstrap........sbf'ing again.
Edit: Still at moto logo. 4 minutes now not booting.
I recently installed MIUI on a coworkers OG Droid and fell in love. To have it on my X just a week later is awesome. This ROM is tizzits.
I can get cm7 to boot up but not miui wtf am I doing wrong?
Where the hell is everyone? Even IRC is completely empty.
Have you done a factory restore? Did you try wiping cache?

Im on my third sbf now. I rooted stock froyo got d2 bootstrap, got cm7 running, updated cwm to the latest version, wiped data and flashed miui and get stuck at m logo everytime.
I don't know what the issue could be, hopefully you can get it up and running soon.
Hello Guys!
I just bought a droid 3 unlocked, are in Italy.
I have noticed that I have a software version .906 (The last I think), following some guides I installed Rom manager and flashed the recovery from them.
Now I wanted to ask, I can put that rom without incurring risks and fully functional?
And what is the procedure?
Thank you so much guys!
You'll want to install Safestrap 3 from Hashcode which is the latest recovery for the Droid 3 and allows you to install ROMs that use a custom kernel with kexec. Look in the development section for the thread.

moto phones are pretty safe to root and rom, just be prepared to flash a .sbf to recover
but safestrap, makes flashing roms and restoring stock, too easy
cm10 has several things that just don't work, cm9 is better
steel droid ics 5.4 is good or steel droid GB 4.5
with safestrap 3 you flash 4 roms plus stock, and go back and forth just with a reboot
you need to remove rom managers cwm first
edit:
several how to videos here
How to Video's Root, safe strap, kexec, and much more
really thanks.
1) cm9 has not working cam, true?
2)How can i remove the rom manager and the recovery that rom manager have installed?
3)I just have to wipe everything and flash the zip, for every rom?
4) What about minimoto?
5)There is CM7?
Thanks..!
6) My droid is unlocked from when i have It. If i chance rom It Will lock again?

I'll try my best to help you out here but..
1.) The stock based builds of cm9 had a working camera for pictures only, but those builds are gone and no longer compatible with safestrap 3, otherwise development is focused on kexec.
2.) You should be able to uninstall it from rom manager itself I believe
3.) Sometimes, only for something really major like new codec or something, sometimes but its not always necessary and your stock system will be fully protected.
4.) I don't know what that is, lol i'm new here.
5. There is CM7 but it was never worked on nor finished so don't bother with it really.
6.) I really don't know but I highly doubt it.
Otherwise i'm glad to help you out.

yes i have tried many things before posting here....
used to have a droid x and ran liberty on it.
um, lets see i tried to boot my droid 3 with a ROM based on 4.2 (i think it said its compatible with my version, 5.7.906.XT862.en.US.
its like cyanogenmod 10 or something like that.
here is what i did after having rooted of course:
-installed droid 3 bootstrap
-backed everything up using said app
-downloaded the ROM i wanted
-installed ROM manager
-installed the ROM i wanted.
to my surprise when the phone booted back up it was basically stock. it had all the stock apps that come with the phone, except certain things were not working right even then. i could not access google play. i could not access 3g i dont think, it seemed to be running on 1x or something.
tried holding m+power button and i tried a few options in that menu, none of which would properly boot my droid 3 bootstrap.
any idea what the heck happened?
Hello.
The CM10 roms can not work with bootstrap. You need safestrap 3.0x to install them.
I would suggest you go back to stock using SBF:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686911
After that, root, and install safestrap 3.05.
From there you can install any rom you want (GB, ICS, JB).
Do note that only GB roms are fully functional. None of the JB builds have camera and the ICS builds aren't nearly finished

Yeah you need Safestrap 3.0.5 not bootstrap you can grab it here, http://goo.im/devs/hashcode/solana , make sure to uninstall bootstrap before installing safe strap
okay i got steeldroid a gb version of it installed and it works fine
but how do i get ICS and JB versions installed? i tried both in slot 1 and neither would work properly i just got boot loops im assuming i need firmware but i havent seen any downloads or ways to update my phone.
Maybe I havn't done my homework properly but I need to ask.
I have been running an OLD version of the CM9 (2012-07-25) on my xt862, and I finally decided to upgrade.
To my delight, I even found out there was an CM10.1 for my beloved Droid3.
I upgraded safestrap to 2.01 and started installing the lastest 10.1 image.
But when the upgrade is done, and I reboot, it seems to boot into stock rom for some odd reason.
After some reading I found that if charger is in while booting, it will boot into stock rom because of some bug.
So I tried to boot without charger - Same result.
Then I though, well, I had the charger plugged when upgrading.. maybe that's the issue.
Pulled the charger, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted - same result.
I am now back on my backup with the old ICS image.
Am I doing something wrong? Or do I need perhaps to use the Saftestrap3?
I chose not to install the safestrap3 due to the incompatibility with the safestrap 1/2 backups.
Is there someone who can advice me on how to upgrade properly, and preferably without risking to loose my backups, or atleast a good way to convert/make new backups.
By the way, can I safely install saftestrap3 (if needed) from safe system? Or do I need to go back to stock for that?
(I went back to stock when upgrading from safestrap 1.08 to 2.01 though).
Also, one more question, I rad a lot about the camera not working.
I remember reading about the camera not working properly when I upgraded to CM9, but that was only video recording I think.
Is it the same problems in CM10.1 or is it the entire camera not working?
Edit: Maybe I should add, I am talking about Hashcodes rom's, nothing else.
Hmm.. anyone?

You need to upgrade from non-safe. Switch back to non-safe, start Safestrap, uninstall recovery. Restart to make sure that Safestrap is no longer running. Uninstall the current Safestrap app, and then install Safestrap 3.05. Start it, and tap the install recovery.
That should do it.
I haven't installed CM10.1, so can't answer any questions about that. I do know that it must be installed in the first ROM slot.
Yes, you definitely need to upgrade your Safestrap. Hash's latest Safestrap for D3 is v3.05.
