I think you would more help if you posted this in the ginger real thread...
If you care about battery life than for themeing your phone, I recommend you get a stock rom.
I use a stock rom with cf-root, and the CRT effect. This is all I need, battery is great, it lasts almost 36 hours with regular usage (lots of messages, some calls, a little gaming), or about three days if used at a minimum (only messages).

[Q]Upgrading to 2.3....worth it?

Hello guys,
First i'd like to thank the forum for all the support and knowledge i've gained reading tons of posts
Well i upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 like 3 months ago, running a custom rom which works fine but it suddenly crashes or some apps hung till i feel like throwing the phone to a wall ( has not happend yet ) so im checking everything about gingerbread and to be honest im feeling tempted to try it out.
here's my main concern, battery life, for the moment my phone manages to survive around 35hours with 3g on most part of the day ( juice defender helped me alot), but this random crashing is starting to drive me mad.
so now, which rom would you recommend for what i've seen darky and juwe's are like the top ones.
so tell me guys, which one would you suggest
this question might sound stupid, but i need opinions to be honest.
Regards
p.d. sorry if i screwed up at writting, ain't my first language
You should just try them and see if any is to your taste. I myself stick to stock roms. Right now the latest 2.2.1 which is rock solid, no complaints and excellent battery life. The gingerbread roms still have some problems and people are reporting battery drain on them although I used a few before and had no such problems.
No
I have been using 2.3 for some time, but I don't think it is worth upgrading. Nothing new in Android and it hasn't been very stable for me. GPS seems to be worse too, getting a fix takes ages.
My experience:
-- battery life far behind (Using Voodoo kernel on Ginger or CM7 VS Hardcore kernel on Froyo)
+ GPS a bit better
+ Better speed (very fluid), but it was already good in Froyo with Hardcore's kernel
+ Web browser a bit better thanks to the improved speed I guess
+ Gtalk with audio and video is possible
As I don't need battery life so much since I'm not on vacation at the moment, I prefer to use Gingerbread daily. I hope that thanks to future releases from Samsung and Hardcore's kernel, or improvements to CM7 we will reach the battery life we had with Froyo someday.
If I was in need of battery life, I would stick with Froyo for now.
To be completely honest, I use custom ROM's anyways, and there isn't a whole lot I notice different in 2.3 over 2.2. I have noticed improved GPS connectivity, and slightly better battery life.
If you are having problems with 2.2, I would suggest making an upgrade.
IMO what you get in 2.3 vs. 2.2 is the Android OS bug. And that's pretty much the only "important" change.
I'm considering downgrading, as a phone with 6 hour battery is useless...
Not sure on some of the custom rom's but was using 2.3.3 XXJVO stock for a couple days and had no trouble, battery life was much the same as what I had to stock 2.2
Trying to get gingerreal working to give that a crack.
I'm on JVO now but I still think JPY is better.
For me, I don't see any significant improvement on Gingerbread over Froyo 2.2.1
I only see some annoying faults in JVO that sometimes I makes me wanna return to JPY.
Iv'e used stock JVB and had 36 hours average on both of the phones we have. Then I moved to Tweaky's JVH based rom and saw an increase in speed, but battery life plummeted to 12 hours without fixes, 24 max with fixes. Went to MIUI 4 for a day and found it looked like a copy of iOS and dropped it like it's hot after 8 hours of playing with it. Now one is on Darky's 10.1 and battery life is improved to 24 hours of heavy use. We skied Whistler last weekend, so music is running, gps on the Whistler tracking app, Bluetooth for the motorcycle intercoms strapped to the helmets for 6 hours at 0 Celsius. And I have yet to apply the fixes recommended in Darky's thread. Wifi is always on as well.
Granted batt life is not nearly as long as stock JVB, but decent enough for what we do.
I've also attached screens of the last 14 hours of usage with WiFi and Bluetooth running. Again without the recommended fixes, and it's still at 84%.
I see more possible cons than pros ill just install a stock 2.3 for the moment if it doesn't work for me ill get back to froyo
Thanks for the feedback everyone

Give it a go ....why not?
battery life is excellent "IN MY EXPERIENCE" (don't believe everything you read)...give yourself a fighting chance though...suggest
backup
factory reset with internal USB format
flash
factory reset again
then judge for yourself.
And if you do fancy going custom...yes I can thoroughly recommend Juwe 4.3.1 too
well as we speak im flashing the phone, sadly i bricked it
3 times now lol, thankfully i got my jig in here so the 2.2 stock rom i downloaded from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913&highlight=stock+rom) doesn't work or im doing something wrong
sucks getting stuck at sbl.bin....
guess ill first get an stable rom then i can try with 2.3
to be fair my personal opinion is that the latest froyo firmware for me JSD is laggy and this is even with hardcores speedmod which makes things worser :/ so for now im on tweakys AOSP edition which is GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRReat except for battery life and oh yeah the browser on gingerbread is way better than froyo with the exception its slower but smoother
Like some others, I've gone from JPY 2.2.1 to JVO 2.3.3
Honestly, if you're on a 2.2.1 rom, you won't gain too much by upgrading to Gingerbread. It's not like Eclair=>Froyo.
If you're on 2.2 still, then go for it - however, 2.2.1 is pretty much solid with fewer bugs.
well after an evening full of frustration and amusement
im on 2.3.3, ill test it out for couple weeks and will share my thoughts about it
as a side note, Mexican sgs are so freaking hard to flash to GB srsly
thanks everyone

I'd go along with that - though the bug has only appeared once in the last two weeks. Re-booting sorted it. Apart from that I see no other changes.
P.S. My phone has just re-booted itself. Been reported elsewhere I seem to recall!!!!!
I have tried Juwe's Smart edition, simply honey and Darky 10.1 but all of them were slow compared to Darky 9.5 with hardcore's kernel. 2.3.3 wasnt that smooth and it was buggy.
Wtf is that browser? They tried to make it like iphone but stupid Samsung forget that in iphone if u touch the status bar the page goes all the way up. However in 2.3.3 when u read tons of pages, you have to scroll patiently to the top. Its so annoying...
Besides I couldn't see any significant battery saving
So I returned back to Darky 9.5 and very happy with it...
only one reason for me why I use Gb JVH: finally I have a free professional email app! The tab-like mail app from sgsii. works great! all else works just like froyo.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
well im now running 2.3.3 JVH with Darky's 10.1, so far the performance is pretty good
and the battery life is amazing
10 hours up and still 83% left, im pretty happy with the outcome

[Q] Best ROM for holiday use?

Hello guys! On sunday, my gf and I are going on a trip to UK and France. I'll be able to use my phone to taking pictures, sending SMS's, connect to Wi-Fi, posting to Tumblr/Facebook and listen to music, but will probably not be able to charge the phone every night. Therefore, I think I've to change ROM from Galnet MIUI to a custom stock ROM to get a longer lasting battery. MIUI is a fantastic ROM, but I can't get the battery to last longer than 18 - 24 hours with semi-heavy use.
So which ROM would you choose on a holiday trip, where you want to connect to internet a few times every day, taking pictures, you name it, without being able to charge every night? Or, is there any CM7/MIUI -kernels that is very battery efficient?
Would appreciate answers.
If you don't matter going back to Froyo just take Darky's 9.5. In my opinion best Froyo-ROM and even better than Darky 10.1.
But I probably wouldn't use CM7 on holiday, it just drains too much battery (but it is one of the best ROMs) for SGS...

Thank you for the answer.
I don't want to go back to Froyo, but how is Darky 10.1? Is it kind with the battery too?
I don't know, I tried 10.1 for only 2h, then I flashed CM7.
But for the things you'll need on holiday 9.5 would be perfect.

just my opinion if froyo is an option:
use the last froyo based ultimate rom (8.2) by webstar and combine it with the last froyo kernel by damian (1.3 beta 3 i believe) This kernel also allows uv which saves some battery as well
I've used this combination for quite some time and I am still amazed by battery life and stability!
Again, thank you for answering! I don't like to think about a downgrade, but I shall think about using either Darky's or Ultimate. But, let us say that these Froyo ROMs doesn't exists, which Gingerbread ROM have the best battery life?

Try a jvp rom
Insanity cm 014/glitch
well problem is... if you go for a sammy gb rom you will have to flash gb bootloaders, then flash back to froyo when/if you return to MUIU or CM7
Bujv9. Stock with damiens beta 7 i think is the best real world battery life. I tried jvp with gto and went back to bujv9. Just my opinion though...whatever works for you.

Hey guys. I too am going on holiday next week.
I will be taking a lot of 720p videos and pictures.
Therefore, MIUI Galnet is not going to be the best rom for me to use.
Juwes rom as been mentioned in this thread. Can anyone else confirm that this is one of the best roms for excellent battery life, if not are there any others?
Yes, Juwe's ROM isn't bad - just try it.

when I'm going on holiday, I try not to replace the proper tools with the sgs. So for pics and video, I use a real photocamera... not the emergency microbic sensor normally mounted on smartphones, even our beloved sgs. Since you're planning to take videos and pics, you should also plan about the best way to take them!
cameras on smartphones... this should be matter for another thread really... as an example, I read here and there people worrying about focus bugs, but depth of field is a function of sensor size (size, not pixel count) and sgs sensor is SO small that DOF tend to be always infinite and the focus problem irrelevant.
My bottom line: don't waste juice and bring a real camera!
Cm7 and miui don,t Have fantastic battery life try jetpack it has very good battery life !

Darky's 10.2 is best for me giving more battery life and performance.... My suggestion is to use Darky'sROM they have good support also.

Captivate rom help....battery and performance.

What is the sleekest rom that is farely fast in quadrant yet the battery life (combined with a modem and kernel) is dependable for light to medium use? Im currently on pheonix ultimate. Not only is it fairly slow but the battery life is not the best even when screen is off and wiring and data are off.
Sorry if it has been asked before. I prefer a gingerbread based captivate rom but anything 2.2 or over is suffice. Maybe explain too what a good modem and kernel are that don't necessarily oc or uv but can...that don't drain battery!
Much Appreciated,

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
It's hard to say which ROM is the *best*, you just have to give them all a shot and see which works best for yourself. Battery wise, doesn't only depend on the ROM itself but also if your battery is old, you might consider changing it.
I don't think quadrant matter either, just numbers, as long as the phone is smooth when I use it, it's fine with me.
Quadrant doesn't mean a thing, but I have found that kh3 roms have the best battery life.
Currently Pinnacle 1.2 and have never been happier
fusion v is fenomenal. fasty is great too, if you can deal with the obtrusive theme and animations
Why don't you just try flashing some roms and see what best suits you instead of asking a community to publicity place a value judgement on other developers hard work?
And for your edification, this is the type of question for.... you guessed it.... q&a, not development.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
No rom is the best. But my experience Native roms tend to run smoother for longer periods of time, and 2.3.4 KH3 roms have the best battery life. Dont ask for "best" because there is no best you gain some things and loose other. So try them out.

Which (2.2 and 2.3) ROM has the most battery life?

Which (2.2 and 2.3) ROM has the most battery life? With normal using. (Daily one hour calling. And one hour using mobile data or wifi, one hour playing with Cut The Rope or Angry Birds Rio on the boring university. )
rom 23 have more features (not important)
rom 2.2 give high battery backup so.... my recommend use 2.2 thtsalll
2.2 definitely has longer battery life. 2.3 for better performance.
I think froyo got good battery life. best froyo ROM is froyobread imo. try it. (if u want to )
it's okey, but which 2.2?
becouse i'm trying now FroyoPro v2.2 but i'm not seeing any difference between this and 2.3 roms (GingerDX v20, MiniCM 2.1.6, GingerXperiaRay_V003 (<-the best 2.3 rom ))

XGin. Latest is XGin 6.1, 2.3.7. For me is the best battery life with normall usage (I call a lot) about 3 days. Of course depending on talking time....
Cheers,
I think 2.2 because developers have longer time to work with 2.2 than 2.3 and 2.2 fit better with x8' hardware
sr my bad E
I have 3 x8's and I have tested all roms apart from ics. Gingerxperia v21 gave 6 days to 33% in airplane mode, kuyadroid(my favourite) gives around 6 days until dead in airplane mode and 3-4 days of using gsm.
All other roms give me 2-3 days.

Best rom for Battery?

My suggestion would be stock gingerbread with speedmod kernel k2-12, i used to get around 4 days with normal use.
That sounds nice. Do you have heavy use of yout phone? Or only deep sleep all the time?

I use it for playing games, little music, calls and messaging. Sometimes connect to Wi-fi. With the same in ICS i get around 2 days.
okay thank you i´ll try. :fingers-crossed:
to set expectations straight, expect thought about 4.5 hours nonstop usage on gb with speedmod kernel.
4 hours on ics with speedmod
alk stock dont expect more then 3 to 3.5 hours.
you only get 2 days if you dont synch, barely use phone and are in good reception area with data switched off always.
Note general tips which can be found in the 10000plus threads about battery drain and how to analyse deepsleep issues

I don't know whether you like gingerbread roms or not , but till date the rom with which I got maximum battery backup with modeate to heavy usage was CheckRom Revo HD V6. This rom never lags , best battery life , and good speed .
If you are Gingerbread hater and ICS lover , then you can try Rocketrom v7( very good battery life with the included kernel , and would be much better with Speedmod Kernel (latest version) ). And then you have CleaNote V2.30 ( V3.0 has bluetooth glitches but its faster , if you are bluetooth user i would suggest you to stick with V2.30 ) , I personally love CleaNote because it has stock look and very fluidic :good: and as the tagline says 'You dont want any theme forced down to your throat '. KingDroid are good at speed but many have reported few glitches with it , you may try it if you like ( I dont like KingDroid , its sth personal ). If you hate Samsung's bloatware then we have Cassie's XtraLite rom for your rescue :cyclops:. Its a good rom too .
Well finally to end , I use cyanogenmod 9 and i update it everyday and with each update it gets more fluid and responsive, fast , smooth . i just love cyanogenmod9 ( waiting for cm10 ).
ParanoidAndroid are for ppl who love fun , who want to showoff their phone , the ability of their phone , the sweet hybrid interface of their phone , its for geeks :-0 .
Make a choice or try all of them :good::good:

I am using CLASSIC V1+15 toggle with MOD V1 which is ICS 4.0.4, and I also updated kernel to chainfire LRG, which is more stable and smooth, battery life is excellent comparatively to all other ROMs so far.
Which is around 4% drain per hour, I have (facebook, wechat, LINE, mitalk, whatsapp, email, exchange service, maps, mixed chinese input, make your own clock) running and leaving it on idle.

For the past 2 years of beeing a S galaxy user, I've quite looked for best battery life at top performance. Most of the time, battery life is no longer measured in "days" of usage , like we used to do with our Nokia phones. Nowadays, you ten to look at display (screen on) time , CPU profiles, and also connectivity patterns.
You can think of battery life as a factor of the above mentioned, however I think that display time is the most important parameter related to battery life. CPU profiles, connectivity, tend to work only when you have your screen on, and from my experience, you tend not to extend your usage time by more than 10-20%.
So as a conclusion, I did not expect a specific rom / kernel configuration to offer more "screen on" time but to offer a more faster way to do my tasks therefore I did more tasks in almost the same display time.
At the end of the day, it is more important how you USE your device rather than finding a "magical" combination that will increase your battery life.
KID + SpeedMod
+1 for GB (i was using checkrom but i'm sure any gb rom will give similar effects) with Speedmod.
If you make setcpu to 200mhz on screen off, i find it uses almost no power at all when it's on standby.
Like it was on 77% when i went to bed.
Woke up in the morning and it was on 78% (i was like lolwut).
Yay for setcpu.
But seriously though, any GB rom will give you considerably more battery life than any ics rom.

The best ROM for a battery-HALF ILLUSION and placed on the scale smartas governor.
