[Q] SD Card Blank ... ONLY on D3? - Motorola Droid 3

I have attempted to find this same issue elsewhere, but only found similar issues...
Sandisk 16G SDHC.
Reads and writes on my machine (linux, ubuntu 11.10, E17).
Reads and writes on my wife's machine (win7 pro 32bit).
Reads and writes on my retired OG Droid (rooted, RZR Recovery, pete's GPA18)
Tried GUI disk manager, shell commands on linux box to reformat.
Tried GUI and CMD prompt on win7 box to reformat.
OG Droid didn't recognize at first, but formatted the card; now reads & writes; flashed GPA18 from the card tonight.
Droid3 (rooted, RC WiFi hack, monster12 bloated; ICS 2.4 launcher) gives Blank SD Card error when attempting to mount.
D3 offers to format, erase; seems to do absolutely nothing
sdcard-ext listed as having only a "-d" directory identifier
sdcard (internal) is listed with "-drw" identifier, showing read/write capability
What else can I try to fix this issue? Has anyone experienced this? HELP?

Sorry, have never come across anything like that before. have you tried a different sd card?

Bad sd card reader on your phone? I would do a warranty replacement if another SD card won't work.

Win32 Disk Imager error

I'm receiving the following error when trying to use Win32 disk imager to make a backup copy (read) of my Micro SD card with nookie installed:
"An error occurred when trying to get the devices geometry. Error 8:".
I've done a bit of searching on this but can't find anything. Anybody have any ideas?
Is there a good alternate?

Man it took me HOURS to figure it out. I had the EXACT SAME problem (when trying to copy the auto-nooter img to my sd card).
I think what finally worked was:
*make SURE you open and run as Administrator (right click on the Disk Imager and select Run as Administrator)
*AND after you've selected the the sd card drive GET OUT OF IT. Click on any other drive or close that explorer window all together.
I hope this helps. I feel your pain.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I'm paranoid now though, as I removed my nookie froyo on SD and I lost all of my applications. I guess I'm supposed to do a save to SD card, right?

I think in your original post you are just trying to backup your sd card, right?
I've done that with my NC and my Evo and every time all I do is huck up via usb, open the drive, create a folder in my C drive (Nook, Evo), and then copy, paste. I then transfer most things to an external HD.
So to backup your sd card all you have to do is copy and paste it somewhere else. DON'T wipe it if you have things saved on there that you need to have run off your NC.
The problem with the nookie use is that your card doesn't show up as a mountable drive under windows. You have to use something like dropbox.
Hold on, I hate to admit this, but I mixed up the SD cards when I pulled them out. I have 2; one of which I had a vanilla image of nookie on. The right one (the one I spent hours on), is fine. Doh.
So you are all good and set to go?
if possible use ubuntu for this (you can do it from a live cd)
i had nothing but issues with windows and win32diskimager and burning sd cards (p.s. windows has no good sd card partitioners that im aware of)
dd is the best way to burn the image, and you can use gparted (if installed) to recover the sd after your done (if your like me and burn sd cards like its no body's business (its not))

Yes. I'm going to transfer this image to my new class 10, and then use this card to put Honeycomb on...

Under Windows, use EASEUS Partition Manager, currently on version 7.01. Free for home use. You can resize partitions or remove them all to reuse the card for another image or whatever. Also, Win32DiskImager is on 0.2-r23-win32. It will restore or create backups just fine. Both are fine for working with Honeycomb and Froyo images.
Mounting the partitions is another issue. I haven't dabbled in Cygwin, never could get it working right. Best use Ubuntu for that, I've got the Netbook edition of 10.10 dual booting with Win 7 x64, long story.

New error:
"An error occurred when attempting to read data from handle error 8:"
This is nuts. Windows 7x64, run as admin, not in any folder, antivirus off, and carbonite off (who knows). Ideas?
Oh, it always seems to get to 49%. Plenty of disk space free too.
Nooke Color, have 8gig brand new card, win32 imager won't find auto nooter 2.12.25
Hi all, i have searched some Q&A on Nookdevs, and LaunchPad, and via code.google nooter project hosting while first trying to root via instructions on Techrepub, which are very detailed, and seemed very simple.
I cannot get past the step of writing the file to my card. It's a brand new 8 gb card, and i'm hooking it up to my laptop (which has WIN 7) via a Dynex sd card reader/ writer. The win32 writer software is unzipped ok, and i open it, and it will find the auto nooter file (which i also unzipped ok) which is on the sd card (windows recognizes the reader as drive H, but when i add drive H: from the dropdown selection for the drive, and then click "Write" button, i get a pop up error that the software cannot locate this file. The only real similar issue i've seen while all my searching is the "Error 8" thing which this is not.
*Edit to original; trying this on another PC was all it needed. I guess Dell failed me, haha.
Try a different usb port or sd card reader? Not all of them are the same. Some work reliably and some are terrible...
Reader may be the issue?
I can return the card reader. I think this is the only option since i've gotten nowhere. Too bad best buy only carries one. Anyone suggest a brand name that works?
yes, i've tried the other usb ports. I am trying a different computer today to check.
thanks much.

Okay I had the same issue... couldn't get diskimager to work. Several people said use ubuntu live cd... didn't want to. So I found a version of DD that works on windows. I've posted very little so can't post links but a google search for "DD for windows" will find it... it's hosted on chrysocome dot net
If you've used unix dd it's simular and it worked for me.
Hope this helps as an alternative!
Quick fix for error #8
Hey guys!
All you need to do is download Panasonic SD Card Formatter 2.0. Do a quick format, and it will work for you.
If you are getting error 8, it is most likely you used the SD card for an image previously and the partitions are goofed on it.
Panasonic SD Card Formatter 2.0 fixes that.
Hope this helps!
I had that same error 8 on Win32 Disk Imager, so I ran the SD formatter as suggested.
It was smart enough to tell me that the card was write protected.
I pulled out the card, and sure enough... DOH!
The card and adapter were brand new, so I never thought of it myself.
The disk imager worked fine with it after I slid that little switch on the adapter.
thank you, run as worked for me.
That Fixed It
I downloaded the following and got similar results.
1st -SDFormatter v. 3.0
2nd-Win32DiskImager (oldest image I could find from launchpad) It worked like a charm.
I also used an old 2 gig microSD from an old cellphone with the 1 gig_clockworks3.0.2.8 image file. I could have used the 2 gig file, however, I wanted to make sure it would fit under my 1.83 gig threshold recognized by windows 7. Go Figure!!!
You guys really saved me on this one. Reading through the forum for about 3 hour straight came in handy.
Hi everyone!
I am brand new here and having trouble with Win32diskimager as well. I get the Error 8 every time I try to lauch the win32diskimager.exe file. (I've even tried the older versions, same thing.)
I tried running the SDformatter as well & that didn't seem to help.
Write protection is off.
I tried all the suggestions I've discovered searching for that error. Any ideas what I am doing wrong???
Thanks for any help you can provide!
Make sure you have the correct device selected

You probably checked this, but I get this error when I have the wrong device (drive letter) selected for writing. It took me about a half hour searching for answers until I noticed I didn't choose the correct drive where my SD card was inserted. Once you see that, it's obvious, but the obscure error message was deceiving.
Good luck.

Nook Color internal SD card error.

I bought a NC on Friday and rooted it an tried to install Clockwork and the result was the black screen no boot. I have managed to reflash it to stock but now the system says the internal sd has an error and it won't let me format it. Funny thing is I managed to use diskpart on windows to repartition that partition while its pluggen in to usb and then the pc can read write but the nook still says the sd is bad.
Any thoughts on what I need to do to get nook to recognize the partition. Is there something else I need to do besides Fat32?
I'm having a similar problem with a Sandisk 16GB card. I can successfully burn Froyo to it, but after I load Froyo from SD, Froyo says that the card is damaged and needs to be reformatted. I tried using TE to makpart of the unused space and it doesn't accept the command. (says "makepart.sh" doesn't exist)

[Q] Easeus not seeing SD card. why?

Okay, not technically a Nook question. But in order to use the extras gigs of space on my sd card while using nookie froyo for sd I need to repartition the sd card. The problem is that Easeus isn't seeing the card. It's there under disk management, explorer, just not Easeus.
Anyone else encounter this problem?
Yep, had same issue. For some reason, when I took out the microsd card and plugged into my laptop via the card adaptor, I had same issue.
Was only able to get Easeus to recognize the card when inside the nook and plugged in via usb. I then partitioned normally. Also check debugging is off (i think off). This is how I got to finally work for me.
Maybe a stupid question but did you launch easeus with the card in or insert the card with easeus already up? Think it has to be in the slot before you load easeus.
I already had the card in the computer. Checked to make sure that I could see it as a drive with all the partitions first. Then fired up Easeus. only shows my C: drive...

Sometimes your card reader can cause problem. Try a different micro sd adapter or usb reader

Had the same
Hi I also has same problem was using server edition uninstalled and installed free version can now see sd card ???
Philyk
I have the same problem. Windows management sees 4 partitions on the card. 1 of them is not formatted.
Explorer only sees files on the root.
This is after I installed CM7. So what partitions can we use for storage?
Are you running the most recent version of Easeus (8.0.1)? I had a problem with a nook SD card that updating solved.
You haven't said If it's in a laptop card dreaded yet. Easus only recognizes USB drives and internal drives. Google Mini tool partition wizard. That one will work for it (assuming you have the laptop card reader). You should be able to expand to empty space on fat32 Partitions in disk manager on windows though, but the mini tool partition wizard is much better than easeus

Froyo "damaged SD card" error

I seen to be the only guy left with this problem. I have burned Nookie FROYO to an 8gb card. Using Mini tool partition wizard i then extend the last partition to cover the unused space. Then the Nook boots fine but gives me the 'damaged sd card' error. I tried the Vold method people used on older NF builds, but that seems just to ruin the image. If i don't resize the partition, everything runs fine and i can use the very limited free space on he card as normal. I wanted to try Easeus instead of minitool, thinking it might be something in the software, but i can't get Easeus to see the card at all after it is burned.
Can anyone help?
any advice on where to go here? I also asked at android central, and not getting any hits there either?
Thanks,
Brian
I've also tried deleting the sdcard partition and recreating it the right size. Since resizing didn't work, I thought this might. But it didn't. Still getting the 'Damaged SD card' error.
How is it that I'm the only one out there having this issue? Very frustrating.
-Brian
had same problem through the sd card in my fascinate and tried to format didn't work then plugged in my phone to my usb cable then unplugged went back and it auto formated for me so now i have my nook sd card all good just a little help
Well, I tried that as well. I plug the NC in, and it shows up as two different USB devices. E and F on my Win 7 machine. After quite some time waiting, I can actually open drive F in windows. Unfortunately, when I unplug my NC and try and remount the SD card, it doesn't do anything different. Still gives me the damaged SD card error.....
What else can I do here?

cm7 from sd card hangs at loading screen

well i followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957 and the penguin came up and the program did its thing. but after it shuts down, i reboot and it stays on the loading screen. i have a sandisk 2 gb card. what could be my issue?
thanks in advance for any help
bootloop, bootloop and bootloop. Let me out!
Me too!
Do I need to root first? Read something about "clearing the cache"? Does it works? How to do it?
I tried installer 1.3 and CM7 nightly -87, then installer 1.2.1 and stable 7.0.3 and 7.0.2. The latter froze during installation!
Also tried recovery after bootloop.
Even left for hours booting. Nothing.
I am using a Sony 4g SD card Class 4 which I formatted using my Laptop and my Nook. Neither way worked.
I am using Win32 disk imager. The Nook simply won´t start if I use Winimage to mount the SD.
Oh yeah! My NC soft is 1.2.0 and the model (I think) BNVR20.
System partition might be corrupted on the SD card. Make sure you always remove the sdcard SAFELY from your PC.
I've never had a problem just removing the SD card but it is wise to "eject" the drive from My Computer on Windows systems to make sure it closes the files and isn't doing a delayed write.
The microSDHC disk may have something to do with it.
Try to use a SanDisk 8GB class 4 microSDHC disk
(you can get one from Amazon for about $11.00 including shipping).
Either one of these builds should work:
-- system #1 running @925MHz max.
----- generic-sdcard-v1.3.img
----- gapps-gb-20110307-signed
----- update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed
-- system #2 running @1300MHz max.
----- generic-sdcard-v1.3.img
----- update-cm-phiremod-nook-6.3
Hope that helps and good luck.
Hi,
does it loop the android man and spinning wheel over and over again, or really hangs? Mine was looping the "spinning wheel" - what helped was removing \data\system\batterystats.bin file via ADB.
Regards,
Maciej
Hey Matchay,
In my case it loops the android man and spinning wheel over and over again.
But I don´t know the first thing about ADB. Where can I get it? And what command line should I use?
Thnx.
The thing is, if you didn't have the "USB Debugging" enabled in settings, the effort to install ADB might be in vain. I do not know any more, what the default setting in a fresh CM7 installation is. For instructions, look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910008. If all works, you'll only need to execute "adb shell" and then "rm \data\system\batterystats.bin" afterwards.
I believe the second option could be to use a fake Hitachi Microdrive driver to trick out the USB Card Reader driver and then reach the /data partition of the SD card directly from Windows. Instructions here: http://www.1src.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1010117&postcount=1
Edit: the second option won't work. Windows doesn't know how to access ext2/3 partitions, even if they can be seen in the Disk Manager after installing the fake microdrive driver.
CM7 running now
Okay, so I got it running.
Guess what I did...
come on...
Yes... I changed the SD card.
New SD card. No more problem.
The first SD card I used was a Sony 4g Class 4. I tested it with H2test2 and the writing speed was around 5-6 MB/s (thus a Class 4) but the reading speed was only 11-12 MB/s (baaad Sony, bad!). Then, I tested a older card I had, a Toshiba 2g Class 2, the writing speed was around 2-3 MB/s (thus a Class 2) but the reading speed was 18-19 MB/s (see Sony!).
So I used the Toshiba SD card and everything is running smooth now.
Now, what have we learned from this?
GET A FREAKING SANDISK CLASS 4 before you even start!!
