A lot of us Bionic users have been experiencing some data loss every now and then, especially after the 4G outage.
So I've been searching around and here's what you do...
1. Power phone off
2. Remove SIM card
3. Power phone on (without SIM card)
4. Power phone off
5. Re-insert SIM card
6. Power phone on
This is supposed to re-register the phone in Verizon's system.
If this doesn't work, you will need to contact tech support and speak with Tier 2. Ask them to "refresh the VLR ID" on the account.
I did this yesterday afternoon and haven't experienced any data drops where as before I did it, I was constantly having my data drop.
Recommend that everyone who is experiencing data drops to at least try this. It may not work, but its worth the shot.

Yes it will increase battery life.
The reason is...
If you have signal but no data, your phone constantly looks for a data connection. This kills battery very quickly. So if you always have a data connection, it wont have to spend all that battery power looking for it.
did u guys have to call or did doing the sim trick get it done for u guys?

SIM "trick" worked for myself as well as Baked-Potato
This Fix is Holding -- so far...!
Try turning on Data Roaming.
Settings - Battery/Data Manager - Data Delivery - Data Roaming (ON)
This has been working for me (and others) for the last 24 hours w/o a single lost data connection. Far better option than the forced OTA to 5.5.893 that I tried last night that almost Bricked my phone due to incorrect mount permissions on mount_ext3.sh after editing.
Works so far I will report back

I've noticed that the switch from wifi to 3g and the 3g connecting after waking the screen has been much better than it was prior to today.
I did have one time where it took about 10 seconds to switch back to 3g and I had a moment of doubt, but it was only a moment.
893+ TR2.0 + Sim card method = good stuff

So I just spoke to a friend who is a rep a T-Mobile, and he told me that they recently announced internally that they will be adding bigger and better data plans in the very near future.
He said the push is due to the 5gb limit being too low for so many users, and the 200mb plan being way too small.
Just thought you guys would want to know. If you ask any telephone rep at T-Mobile they will confirm it.
I knew there was a reason I was holding off activating my SIM. ;-) Any idea when they will officially announce the new data plans?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
You can change the plan in the future. T-Mobile is less likely to extend the contract upon changing plan (except promotion one).

Ah that's a question I had, you can hold off on activating the SIM and still use the Streak 7 normally? I briefly had an AT&T tab and I could even use Google Maps without activation!
I am currently using my S7 with a non-activated SIM inserted. I can pick up a 4G signal, just can't use the data. Additionally, you want to have the cell radio working when you check for app updates, since the Android Market won't recognize certain apps if the cell radio is powered off...
Sent from my Dell Streak 7 using Tapatalk
Makes sense, have you tried Google Maps to see if does get some data like the AT&T did?
Not sure what you are asking, but yes, I can use Google Maps / Navigation, as long as I have data (WiFi) and the GPS radio is on. I have not tried Navigation with the cell signal...yet. Not really sure I want to pay for another data service, even if it is pseudo-4G.

Well like I wrote, on the AT&T Samsung Tab even without activating the SIM, data worked more or less, HTTP on port 80 and for Google Maps. Not sure why but it was handy!
I dont have a data plan and I disconnected wifi. I picked up a cell signal. I was able to do google searches no problem.. when I tried to click a link though it brought me to the TMO page to sign up for prepaid service. So maybe even without data the google things like search and according to you maps.. work. I was kind of surprised when I was able to do a google search with no dataplan and wifi turned off. For a split second I thought I was getting free data! Until I tried clicking on one of the links.. ahhahaha
Sounds a bit like what I'd experienced on the Tab than , I think Google News did work though, albeit slowly. It was certainly convenient for GPS guidance.
Ok, so let's test this further. I'll run mine for a few hours with just the cell and background sync and see if gmail etc work *without* an active data plan...
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Sounds good and I'll be able to join you as my Streak 7 has arrived!
So, I gave it a try and no go, unlike on the Tab where AT&T let some limited data go through with an unactivated SIM, T-Mobile block out all traffic, makes sense.

Confirmed, although having the cell radio on does affect what apps you see in the Market.

I got my Ds7, when I signed up it said 39.99 for 5 GB, when I logged into my account, it says unlimited DATA, gotta love it.
That's a good deal! I've found that the 2gb/$25 of m ipad subscription have always been enough though.
@WookieFan - It also seems that GPS doesn't work in plane mode, even if activated with the smartbar toggle, is there a way to just turn off just the cell phone to try to save on battery life ?

That's because it's probably like most TMO data plans. It's 5GB of fast 3G/4G broadband data until you go over 5GB then it's EDGE speeds after that. It's still unlimited but just slower. Selling it as a 5GB and showing up as unlimited probably irks fewer folks though. They have done the opposite in the past. It doesn't matter to me either way since the end result is the same IMO. I do like how TMO does it. Much better than being raped with overages or cut off.

Not that I have been able to find. But I dont root my devices until the warranty is up. I suspect if yiu have root, you can get an app or a widget that will shut down just the cell radio. I can confirm that no widgets found in the market will shut off my cell radio on a stock S7.

I turned on airplane mode and tunrend on wifi and gps, all seems to be working.
Keep an eye on GPS, it stopped working the other day when I was using the same setup...and also when I wasn't in airplane mode yesterday so there might be other issues at play.
I have an LG Revolution, 12 days old, rooted.
LAst night i plugged in my phone and it would not charge, after trying several chargers, i decided to do a hard reset. I do the hard reset and now the Sim card is not being recognized. When i turn the phone on, it is waiting for activation, I can't get any further than that. I took my phone to the verizon store and they tested out my sim card in another phone and it worked fine. I can't unroot my phone because superoneclick can't recognize my phone, I think I need to turn on usb debugging and change it to "internet connection" but I can't access those options because the sim card activation screen is the only thing it lets me do.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help
had this issue once before and just had verizon replace the sim card. According to them its a known issue with teh 4g phones after doing a factory restore. Just don't let them mess around with your phone after they do the swap and they won't notice/care if its rooted.
The guy at the store i went to put my sim card into his phone and it worked fine, would it still be the sim card?
I got a brand new sim card and it still is not being recognized, any suggestions?
keep trying to activate it and make sure your in a 4g area.
The closest 4g area is like 40 minutes away from me, I wasn't near a 4g area when I first had it activated either?
I had the same problem with my wifes, I has to call and they did some sort if data reset from their end, and it worked.

This worked for me. Take out SIM, power up and let it try to activate, put SIM back in and try it again.
I'm on my second Revo because of this issue. I did a factory restore and it wouldn't recognize the SIM. The Verizon store tried another card and ended up giving me a new phone. I've been very leery of doing another reset...
Patrick, thanks for the suggestion. Pulling the sim out and starting it and letting it try to activate, then shutting it off and putting the sim in. work for me, it got me to the "please wait while sim card is activate"
but my phone would just stay there forever and eventually tell me the sim was not supported on this device.
I called customer support, they told me they had to register that sim card number to my account. 2 minutes later i'm up and running!!!!
Thanks for everyones input.
Yes there's something really wrong with these phones. I'm on my third revo still having the boot up and sim issues. I might keep exchanging untill they give me a bionic.
I experienced this issue as will on my 1st Revo. They replaced the phone and declared it a 'bad' sim slot...no card would work.
My first factory reset ended up in several Sim cards being toast up at the VZW store. Turns out I had my phone on 3G only (to conserve battery). For this reason, I leave my phone on 4G Auto all the time, just in case.

I have read about 5 threads where others had the same issues! I wanted to post a warning in the Dev threads but I'm afraid of being band.

Just want to confirm that pulling the battery and SIM; placing the battery back in with out the SIM; trying to activate; pulling battery; putting both back in fixed my activation issue as well. Thank you very much.

The main thing is that if you have clockwork mod installed DO NOT wipe in the about phone area! Only wipe data IN clockwork. Also just for safety I keep the exitrecovery.zip in my sdcard if it does get stuck looping into cwm.

Hey guys, just traded in my iPhone 4 for a BIONIC and I couldn't be happier being back on Android... but things I have noticed are:
-Random DATA loss issues? all data 3G & LTE suddenly drop and don't come back for about a minute or so
-Notifications will display correctly at first, but at times when checking the status bar, they won't display
-Social Networking app now doesn't let me log into FB? keeps prompting for username/pass even though it's correct
Any ideas?
I just got a bionic too, my data drops out a lot too. Tech support it was because of the Sim card, there is a new card out now that you can get that should fix it.I'm waiting for mine. My main issue is that my phone shuts down by itself a lot, they say its a known issue and hopefully will be fixed with the new ota

Is this a wide spread fix? Can I just call VZW and say my data keeps dropping (which it does) and a new sim card will fix it?

As far as I know yes, the rep told me it was a known issue so they rolled out the new sim. The old sim has a series of 5 digits (ex. 000-000-000-000-000) and the new ones have 6
did u get the update from VZW or no?
I got the official OTA yesterday and installed it. Ever since then, my phone can't hold a signal for more than a few minutes at a time. Not only does data go out, but so does voice! I get the little red circle on the signal bars. Only CDMA is enabled because 4g sucks the life from my phone. So I dont think it's a handoff issue between the 2. Wireless and bluetooth are also off.
The phone is completely stock, but with root. No debloat, mods, anything.
Same thing is happenning to my wife's Bionic and she is 100% stock, no root.
Anyone else having similar issues?
nothing like that here.
What did VZW tech support do?
No issues here either. I was one of the lucky ones and had very few issues before the update.

mine was doing that yesterday morning. i am rooted and had the latest leak version, still stock verizon build tho. i did battery pull and sim card pull. then i finally gave up and called verizon. while on hold, it started working again, and been good since.
VZW support said to power off and do a battery pull... even though I've done that several times.
I hardly had any issues with this phone before the update. Signal was usually fine. No BSOD, and a very rare random reboot... all issues that were supposedly fixed with the update.

I find it odd that tech support didn't recommend:
factory reset
address lookup to check towers/complaints etc of your location
check your provisioning
check your signal strength and prl version
etc
etc
I had few issues before the update, and my data is even better after it. I can hold 4G in places I would have it madly fluctuating before. I still leave it in CDMA only most of the time for battery, though.
You guys aren't having issues with 3g dropping with cdma forced after the update?
I try to force it to save battery but
It won't get a connection.. Turn on lte and it gets data right away..

Same as OP - reset to factory, permarooted, and installed OTA - data is MUCH worse than it was (and it was bad before).
Thankfully, I am still eligible for upgrade. This POS is going on Ebay and I am getting the Nexus tomorrow.
I have to agree. My data is horrible horrible. This was supposed to be my dream phone...... Data... cameras.....ota made camera bearable but data it grrrrrrr.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Maybe I am in the minority but my data issues seemed to have been resolved with this update. The camera is working better as well.
All items that were supposed to be fixed with the update seem to be, but now I've got this problem.....
Anyone have any idea what is going on here?
I was rooted with the Bionic Bootstrap Recovery app installed and working. Today, I just installed the new Verizon update because I was having the black screen problem as well as the no data signal problem (all the time).
Since the update, I lost root (I figured I would) so I re-rooted. Now I cannot update my SU and Bionic Bootstrap Recovery doesn't work as well as WiFi tether. WTF Verizon?
Any help is welcome. Thanks

Keep an eye on it today. I'm not sure how long you've had your SIM card, but it's possible that it's flaking out.
If you have the option, have your friend put their SIM card in your phone and see if it still gets a G signal (and vice versa with their phone). That would at least let you isolate the issue.
