I have both an iphone and a G1. Now people slate the iphone for not being open source, but in terms of productivity it seems the iphone still wins out for me, and it is almost entirely down to two apps which I feel the G1 could REALLY do with: sbsettings and irealquicksms. I am trying to use my g1 everyday as I'm considering selling my iphone and hope someone can point me in the direction of something similar, or the same. Best to look on YouTube for a full understanding of these apps, but in shorts....
Irealsms allows you to send an sms from within ANY application, simply by pressing the volume button followed by a tap on the volume icon that appears, or by doubletapping the homekey. This saves swapping between applications if a text needs to be sent, and also facillitates replying. This is invaluable if you are watching a movie clip and really speeds up the texting process...it is the one application I truly miss from the iphone more than any other.
SBsettings allows you to change almost ANY setting from within ANY application simply by swiping a finger across the status bar on iphone. This means, for example, that if one is watching a film, or browsing the web, one can change the brightness, turn on/off wifi, bluetooth, 3g, gps or any number of other functions by simply swiping the top of the screen, upon which a toggle board slides down the screen. A press of the menu key slides it back up again. I am amazed that this app hasn't been developed for android as it is much more efficient than silly toggle switch widgets which clutter the home screen and are far less practical if one is already inside an application
well Toggle Settings by cooolmagic places the application icon in the status bar for quick access, I find that a good replacement for SBsettings
Toggle Settings is definitely an awesome app and sounds like it would be a good replacement for that Iphone app.
I use ChompSMS and they are constantly improving their app. I'll get onto their website and request they add on a shortcut ability. Say double press on the camera button?
Or, another option is "Bar Control" to add a shortcut for ANYTHING to your notification bar.
Keyboard shortcuts are great, too.
I would suggest looking into sms popup. It makes the text msg pop up and you can just hit the reply button after you respond just hold down the home button and go back to the program you were using last.
Why not use the quick launch keyboard shortcuts for messaging (Search button + S) and Settings (no default)?
You can set shortcuts for up to 36 different apps and the shortcuts will work from any application. Just go to Settings > Application Settings > Quick Launch.
You could also just hold [HOME] and select Messaging/ChompSMS to send texts without having to drop back to the home screen (If it was one of your last 6 apps used anyways...)
Fandango would also be awesome.

Bar control allows you to put any app in the notification bar for easy access within most apps. So you could put your messaging app and a setting app (or any other app you may want) in the bar for easy access. The only exception would be apps that take up the full screen and hide the notification bar. Not many of those though.
I just started using Tasker on my Droid X running Liberty GB and am loving it. Last night I installed tasker on my gtab running CalkClem V6 and was wondering if anyone has any gtab/tablet specific profiles or tips?
So far I have only used Tasker on the gtab to automatically turn off the screen when the case closes. The profile activates when the light sensor is at zero. The corresponding actions are wait 4 seconds and then lock device. I'm betting I will have trouble with this profile when using the gtab in a very dark room, so I might have to restrict this profile to only daylight hours.
I'm also considering using tasker to shut down the gtab automatically every night at around 2AM just in case I left it running and it's not plugged in.
Anyone doing anything interesting with tasker and the gtab?

That's actually REALLY useful! I'm going to go find it on the market in a little bit...
Tasker is $6.42 in the marketplace, which seems a bit expensive for an automation app... until you've tried it. The dev's site has a 7 day trial apk if you want to give it a spin. You can backup all profiles from the trial and restore them to the purchased app if you like it.

I just created a profile on my droid x that plays beyondpod and sets the media volume to a specific level every time my Bluetooth headphones are connected.
sorry if I sound like a shill, but it's just so awesome...
Oh, its a paid app.
I like the idea, but not enough to spend that much on it. Maybe if it were a 99 cent app.
I'm almost certain there is a free app to do just the case close screen off portion. I remember seeing it here on the forum a while back.
That would be clutch, as I just got my case today and would love to make that happen!
To the op, could you post instruction on how to do what you did with locking screen when light sensor is zero? I'm struggling. With it.
Tasker isn't the most intuitive tool in the world, so here is how I achieved the case close, screen off profile:
Open tasker
tap "New" to create a new profile and name it anything
tap "State"
tap "Light Level"
set top slider at 0 and set bottom slider between 1 and 4 (higher number will help if your case doesn't block all the light)
tap "Done"
tap "New Task" and name it anything
tap "+"
tap "Tasker"
tap "Wait"
The second slider is seconds. This will determine how long the delay is between when you close your case and when the screen turns off. I selected 4 seconds to avoid accidentally covering the sensor with my finger.
scroll down and tap "done"
tap "+" again
tap "Display"
tap "System Lock"
tap "Done"
Tasker will need to gain a new permission from the OS at this point. Be sure to read the warnings that will pop up.
tap "Done"
tap "Apply" and make sure the "On" check box is selected in the bottom right
That should do it. If this doesn't work you may want to confirm that your light sensor is functioning properly (I've only tested this on CalkClem V6). To do that I downloaded one of the "phone sensor" apps from the marketplace.
Nvm, I'm an idiot.

Haha, my original problem was I couldn't find "system lock". But in the back of my mind I was trying to look for "lock system". Only saw "lock" but no "lock system". I was like "wtf?"
Then after going on a rampage through my kitchen, I went back to the gtab and found "system lock".
May be I should get my eyes checked soon. Been a few years since last time.
By the way, thank you for recommending this app for me. I'm waiting for my clip case to arrive. Man, it will be slick. Has tested it a dozen times now. The screen shut off every time.
The thing is too bad the other way around doesn't work. I tried to set up the reverse to turn it on when there's light and the gtab wouldn't turn on.
Any idea how to restrict this to daytime hours? Nevermind. My dumbass found it.
You can restrict it to daylight hours by tapping the left side of the profile and selecting "add." From there you can set the hours in which this profile can be activated.
Just in case any onlookers were interested.
Check out gestures in tasker too. You can do things like mute the tab by rotating it left then right.

I want to trigger a specific routine i created in Yonomi. Their triggers aren't versatile enough so i always have to do it manually. Yonomi can create shortcuts on homescreen but when launching the app (shortcut) trough tasker, the routines i made aren't there (i can only choose launch activity). I can use autoinput to do it, but that doesn't work when screen is off. Somethoing that works with screen off is my goal since i want to trigger it by webhook. I did use the assistant voice command task already but it seems overkill to me.
Any idea?
In android 10,a new feature called as TURN ALL SENSORS OFF is available in developer settings. It also has a qs tile.
Is there a way to automatically enable this feature upon screen off and then disable upon screen on?
The obvious answer is absolutely yes using AutoInput to emulate the touches. That can also be done with more effort using just built in Tasker actions.
However, it's possible (likely?) That there is a secure setting that controls this action. You can sort that out by comparing the secure settings before and after toggling the tile. The AutoTools secure settings action has an assistant that may help you sort this out.

1) In android 10,there is an option to disable all sensors in developer options. So i turned it on last night, and battery drain was less than 2 % in 4 hrs, compared to 1% per hour usually, with volte and 4g data on. I would get more accurate stats later on.
There's a qs tile available to activate it.
What I want to ask is, is there a way to automatically enable it every time the screen goes off, and then disable it when screen goes on, without any user input?Either as a shortcut or as a qs tile.
2) I am afraid i don't have enough knowledge to exactly understand the steps you are telling. Do you know of a pre made recipe to execute this. I tried to search but in vain. Or if you are on android 10,maybe you can try doing what i need.
Thank you.
There are loads of tutorials available to use the AutoInput plugin.
As far as issuing the native tasker custom setting action;
Create a new task
Add a Settings -> Custom Setting action
A developer settings action is probably a global setting but you may have to explore
When you are in the configuration for the Custom Setting action, use the magnifying glass and Find to identify the setting you want. A pop-up will appear directing you to ok out of the instructions then go to the setting you want to manage, activate the setting and return to Tasker. Then hit the magnifying glass again and if the setting was identified, it will display in the pop-up where you can select it.
No offence, even if I were on A10, this can be done with a basic understanding of Tasker so I wouldn't create a project for it. If you are still unsure what to do, please take the time to work through some basic tasker tutorials to gain familiarity with the app.

Will follow the steps. If I encounter any issues, will reply back here.
Big thanks.
...and to set the brightness to a specific value? I can do this easily in Windows, but not in Android.
Perhaps you figured it out by now, but just in case, the answer is definitely yes, I use that very functionality for brightness on my phone:
1. Create a new task
2. Add a "Display Brightness" action to this task (the value in this action doesn't represent percentage, so you might need to experiment with the number to get the desired brightness)
3. Add a "Tasker Shortcut" widget to your home screen. It will lead you to select the name of the task you created.
-It will also require you to select an icon for the widget, which you will do with the 9 squares at the bottom of the task edit screen (I already selected an Android robot icon in the picture).
-When adding the widget, you may also encounter an error message requiring you to open Tasker and exit with the back button to close it out properly in order for the widget to work.
There would be a similar process for volume, but you'd have to choose the appropriate action for which volume you want to adjust: ringer/system/media, etc.
Yes, I did figure it out, but thanks for posting that clear explanation, which is rare. It will probably help someone.
My most interesting program so far is a reliable way to turn the display off and on automatically to save battery power and, more importantly, to extend the lifetime of the power button.
Even with a reliable program, though, Tasker sometimes delays responding when it is closed and the display is off, so I've found that Tasker must be left running all the time. This is easy to arrange: in Android task viewing mode, click the lock icon at the top right of the screen view pane so that it becomes solid.
Such locks persist forever, I think, and are therefore quite confusing to newcomers to Adenoid, I mean Android.
You're welcome. Hopefully it might. I sympathize with the new user, since often it's difficult to get a solid, helpful answer from an advanced user regarding a beginner's topic.
As for Tasker being killed on occasion, unfortunately the circumstances surrounding that vary dramatically between devices. For example, whatever lock icon you're talking about to fix the issue on your device is not on my phone at all, so it would not work as a solution for me.
Do you have the option to "Use reliable alarms" in Tasker? I'm not sure if its presence varies between Android versions. I have that option set to "always"*, and I've never had a single time where Tasker fired late or was killed. It uses a persistent system alarm to keep tasker "in mind" all the time.
*And battery optimization for Tasker turned off, of course

Enabling Use Reliable Alarms doesn't help. I think at this point I would say that getting Tasker to work when the display is locked is not obvious. Perhaps it is documented somewhere.
Basically, the bad symptom is as follows: after the display has been locked for a few minutes, moving the device fails to turn the display on again. Something kicks or locks Tasker out, but only after more than just a few seconds.
Sorry about not realizing that locking an app in memory is not part of Android. I'm using an inexpensive TCL A3 device sold by Tracfone. Locking is nice when you want to avoid startup delays for a task.
