[Q] Droid 3 Verizon vs. Unlocked vs. China version..?

Does anyone have a feel yet for how much Verizon dogged down the Droid 3 with bloatware, bad hardware decisions, and/or just generally screwed up the specs from what Motorola originally intended it to be...?
For instance:
- is the GPS locked so Google Maps can't access it?
- is there Crapware that I won't want yet won't be able to uninstall?
- can't make it a hotspot?
- can't tether it without fees or 3rd-party software?
- are there other things Verizon has "branded" that will make me crazy(er)?
Should I hold out for an unlocked version on Ebay, or go for the one from Verizon and unlock it myself..?
Or...is the locked version kinda ok enough to deal with that unlocking it isn't worth it?

Ok so as about what you asked here is what i see on my system.
There is some verizon apps preinstalled that cant be removed
V Cast Media Manager
V Cast Music
V Cast Tones
V Cast Videos
VZ Navigator.
they do not however seem to bog the system down at all.
it can be a hotspot but until rooted you will have to pay for it i assume. I never use this feature so not sure how all that works
I would also say you cant tether it without the verizon software to do so but again i do not use that feature
Maps uses GPS just fine, i have never heard of moto blocking the GPS from google maps before.
I personally think it is a great phone. i have hated the last couple versions of blur but this one i could live with just would like to have root to remove some of the verizon stuff. The system is snappy i think if you could get a staight vanilla rom like apex it would be even faster but i have yet to see the system lag or force close anything.
I would also be willing to bet someone will find a way to root it in the next couple weeks.

It looks like there will be a Canadian version on Bell in a few weeks too.
I'm in the UK, and all reports suggest that the Milestone 3 (as presumably it would be called) isn't getting a UK release, so I'm looking at all these other international models and am wondering which would be most appropriate.
My assumptions so far are:
1. Droid 3 is primarily CDMA, and although it has some GSM capability, I'm not sure that it's going to work terribly well in the UK.
2. The XT883 (Chinese Milestone 3) is primarily CDMA too, and will also potentially suffer from language issues, and also things like inability to access the Android market?
3. The XT860 from Bell might be a contender - I think I'm right in saying that Bell operate a GSM network, and obviously the phone will be in English/French out of the box.
I guess the hardest part will be making sure the device is unlocked, i.e. not tied to a network, and will operate in the UK before buying one from abroad.
Does anybody have any thoughts?

The Canadians get the XT860 Motorola Milestone 3 4G, or should we say Faux G since its not 4G and everyone knows it.

Unlocking the Droid 3 is a *****, If you do not have account with them it is near impossible all the codes only do not work since the phone goes to a subsidy mode.

[Q] DROID 3 for Global use (Belgium in particular)

Hi,
do any of you guys have experience with purchase and use of the Droid 3 as GSM in Europe?
I live in Belgium and travel a lot. So I need a smartphone with a physical keyboard that can keep up with my professional and recreational needs.(btw: any better solutions?)
I think the Droid 3 is the best solution given its above average battery life.
Can anyone, who went through the approximately the same situation inform me, how to best acquire the device (I don't have anyone in the States nor Canada that can ship it for me...), what the latest roms are that are compatible and the experiences (positive and negative ones!) till now?

2) It works pretty well with GSM for me. You might have to make some chances depending on your provider. (needs root, but pretty easy)
Many providers here work instantly if you don't have a very old sim-card but e.g. for vodafone you need to edit 2 files to get data/sms.
3) Pro's: great keyboard! It's all about the keyboard for me. If you don't need it there are better phones available.
Cons: The screen is only average at best (compared to galaxy S2 etc.), but for me it's good enough.
4) About the battery; with custom ROM it's pretty good but I wouldn't say it's something that makes the droid 3 stand out.
5) There's ICS available for droid 3 but it doesn't have video recording and HW codecs.
I use mavrom 4.0 myself.

I have the XT860 (Canadian GSM ver. of droid 3) in the Israel.
bought from Ebay .
works pretty well with GSM for me. You might have to set yours provider APN to get data/mms.
use Stok Rom .

If you can get an 862 with a SIM unlocked slot it should be fine. The biggest things are that you may have to do the AT&T/T-Mobile hack and mess with build.prop but there is well documented guides but the only showstopper is it the SIM will unlock.

You don't need to do the AT&T hack for use in europe. The one I linked from negri is SIM unlocked

Probably not but there have been a few posts I remember reading that basically said that they had to for Europe because it didn't work the best.

No tweaking was necessary, but I did need a new SIMcard (note: my sim was VERY VERY old, so you might not have this problem).
With providers like vodafone some edits may be needed.
I use mavrom because it's way better than stock and has no bloatware. Also it fixed a bug I had.
MAVrom does have video recording capabilities. Everything works.

[Q] Possible to unlockt heis phone for service on Boost Mobile?

So, I'm on tmobile, ad want to switch because it's too expensive for a phone I don't like that much (Mytouch 4g slide; crappy keyboard, sense infected 2.3, glitchy, etc.) I was thinking of witching to Boost mobile because they are cheaper, and have the Samsung transform Ultra, which despite being "low end" works great software wise and is stock, good keyboard, I know this from experience.
But then i thought about the Droid 4. I might be able to stomach the capacitive front keys (maybe) and its pretty high end. so I figure i'd try it, but I see it's GSM is not unlocked for US GSM carriers yet. but i wonder, would it be possible to unlock for Boost? that's a Sprint subsidiary, if that helps.
Also, Looking up info, I see there's supposed to be an international GSM version coming out, the XT898, announced a few months ago but nothing else announced yet that i've seen. anyone know about that?
P.S. does the mobile Chrome browser work on the Droid 4? It works on My iconia tab but not my 4g slide, so I figure it's an issue with the firmware version.
*edit* meant to say "this phone" in the title. damn arthritis. this is why I need a better keyboard.

Seems like some folks have been able to move Verizon CDMA phones to Sprint's network in the past. Have no idea how difficult that would be for the D4.

[Q] Stock, unbranded, UK firmware

I have a I9305 purchased from Hong Kong which came loaded with HK firmware, whilst it would have worked, for various reasons I want to install UK firmware, specifically official/stock versions. (I have run custom ROMs on other handsets in the past, just going to stay official for a while with this one)
I don't want any carrier-specific stuff on there, nor so I want to be held back (in the future) waiting for carrier-specific upgrades etc.
I have a few, hopefully yes/no questions:
1. I've search and as far as I tell you there is no unbranded, UK, stock firmware available, is that correct? (guess this is because nobody's selling it unbranded in the UK yet)
2. Is the best thing to do to monitor sammobile and samsung-updates until I see what I want?
3. When I finally do get my hands on the firmware I'll flash it with Odin - will I automatically get subsequent updates via Kies/OTA?
I'm current running I9305XXALK3 for region DNF...which I thought might be international/country-agnostic but since the default language it offered me on first boot was Suomi I guess it's actually for Finland!
The phone works fine, but it's only Android 4.1.1 and obviously I'd like to get on 4.1.2, I suppose another country (e.g. Germany) but unbranded is ok...but not perfect
Apologies for the long, first, post, hope it's not too annoying...I'm just excited about retiring my Hero and enjoying this new beast!

Thanks for the response...but those are all EE branded, will that:
1. mean I have to wait for EE to approve future updates? (I'm thinking once we have unbranded/unlocked handsets in the UK they will receive upgrades first)
2. have any effect on the network e.g. performance, connectivity etc.? (I'm currently on 3, not EE/Orange)

OK, I've installed the latest i.e.
PDA: XXBMA6
PHONE: XXBLL5
CSC: EVRBLL1
A couple of observations:
1. As others have noted, the mobile network modes are limited to just 2 (2G/3G/4G auto connect & 3G only) whereas the previous firmware I was using had 4.
2. With the previous firmware it seemed to hold an H+ connection much better, with this firmware it seems to drop back to 3G+ most of the time.
Any thoughts? It would seem that this firmware, despite being official, is more limited than some others.
I'm not overly concerned with #1 (although does 3G only really mean just 3G or will it also use GPRS if that's all it can find?) but #2 (and I realise I haven't done any structured testing!) does worry me - I want the fastest speeds I can get as often as I can!
My gut feeling is that EE's firmware might not be optimal for those who want to operate on non-4G networks. (what does the Vodafone or O2 firmware have?)
Does anyone know for sure what's different and why?

^this I think is a mistake on my part, I've played around a bit more and it looks like (but could be my imagination of course!) that the phone jumps up to H+ on demand e.g. refreshing a web page causes it to switch up from 3G+ to H+ once the page is loaded it reverts to 3G+.
Am I going nuts?

What you are seeing is called fast dormancy. Its kind of a battery saving feature hence why H+ is not always on. Most networks support this nowadays.

Im on Orange just now and when my contract is up will switch over to EE for the 4G, so will probably just flash the EE Firmware whenever the phone arrives.

I got mine for simply electronics and its called Dual carrier having the HK rom, which by the way it is still the 4.1.1

I got mine from Panamoz...but all the Hong Kong dealers probably obtain the phones via the same routes.
Have to say I'm impressed with Panamoz so far, ordered at 2130hrs on Sunday evening and delivered to me in the UK on Wednesday. The real test will be if I have to use the warranty...but obviously I'm hoping that day never comes anyway!
My only comments are:
1. Mine was packaged for the French market e.g. the mains charger is for French sockets, the instructions are in French etc. (Panamoz did put a free mains adaptor in the package to deal with the charger) Wonder if any other options besides French were available, would have been nice to know this up-front.
2. The initial screens were in Chinese and if you're not familiar with Android you might not know that the first thing it asks on initial boot is what language you want to work in...I think it'd be handy if Panamoz provided a piece of paper with brief instructions and a screenshot explaining how to switch the language, otherwise some people might panic!

I have actually just cancelled my order. 2 Weeks after placing the order it still hadnt been dispatched, and I was wanting it for this weekend. I'll just pop down to the local Orange shop and buy it there, its only £50 dearer so i can handle that ok.

I am coming from my last few phones being Samsung models , the Galaxy Nexus, Note 2 and 3, and the S4. The last Motorola phone I had was a Droid Razr. I left Moto because the hardware specks started to decline, no sd-slot, no removable battery, less desirable construction. I came back due to Samsung's questionable antenna and radio package. I never really had good strong signal with Samsung though. So, Motorola finally comes out with a beast of a phone in the specs catagory, although still no sd or battery pull but my signal is amazing, reception just about everywhere. So I'm confused why is there no development for the US Verizon Turbo? To me it seems like a no brainer.

That one is easy to answer... Until a vulnerability is found and exploited and root is achieved there is no platform to develop on. That doesn't mean that there isn't anyone working on it, just that not much is going to happen until root is achieved.

Then how do we get some of the heavy hitting android minds on this thing? It really is the best specimen out there currently.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm being a newbie here, but I never understood the software difference between Droid Turbo and Moto Maxx that makes the last rootable and the first not. Is it just the bootloader?

You can unlock the Moto Maxx bootloader. You cannot unlock the Turbo's. Plain and simple.

All bootloaders can be unlocked by the manufacturer. But in the case of the Verizon variant (Droid Turbo) Verizon has asked/told Motorola to keep the bootloader locked. Ergo the need for a vulnerability - and someone who knows how to exploit it.

Everything I've been reading indicates that root for the Turbo is a long shot, since the folks that do that stuff really don't want to spend the efforts on a phone that's strictly on only one carryier, Verizon in this case.

Don't blame it on that. The Thunderbolt was exclusive and had root before it even was officially released.
It more boils down to that those who can do it have day jobs and probably don't have the phone nor care to have it.

Like I said, I really don't know. I'm just repeating what I've said, however I can understand your point as well.

Are there any recognized developers that even have the phone? I know its a bad idea to purchase devices and "loan" them to developers, but I feel like we should donate a few. Something like the bounty for root, but the money funds devices ahead of time. Find a few devs that would be interested and give them the device. It would have to be no strings attached though, if the Dev had no success people couldn't demand their money back. You would know ahead of time that you were donating for the chance at root, not a guarantee. Probably would just end up being an ordeal, but we really need capable devs with the device to take a look. I feel like at this point were just waiting for another moto device to get rooted that happens to work for us.

No root, no recovery, but moto maxx its same device basic "quark" have root and recovery too, but no roms or kernel, the real problem is device dont sell in all countrys, so no devs until now.

I know this thread isnt about sd card slot, but why not go and use a otg usb sd mount stick? Its like having a sd card.

I am guessing that since Verizon is furnishing mobile and internet to some major corporations, the corporate environment wants to have phones secure. Hence that is why they want the bootloader locked as to appeal to the major companies and sell more phones. That was the reason it was when I worked for a major company.

That is not the reason. All carriers have deals like that and not all of them are locking bootloaders.
Verizon is doing it for warranty, support, and insurance reasons.

I am making the switch to tmobile at the end of the day today because verizon straight out is trying to over charge for stuff on the bill that shouldnt be there. No one on my account has ever used the visual voicemail paid version nor gone over usage and my fiancees line is said to be 600 dollars or more a month. Not happening. I called tmobile and talked to them for a bit, and explained to her about the bill she gave me the best deal plus with unlimited data for 70 a month. Bringing over my nexus 6. After that was all done I just randomly asked questions about locked bootloaders and root, and the lady spoken clear as day is we are not verizon or att. We support the development community (root and unlocked bootloaders), and that all devices are unlockable in that sense. Tmobile is a go to company for me. Yes some of the service is spotty but still its well worth it for having to deal with verizon since 1998. She even brought up that she is currently using an s5 with cyanogenmod. They actually allow their employees to do that stuff to their work phones as long as they know how to return to stock. Verizon you have been ok in the past but i am out.

I tried T-Mobile a couple of months ago for exactly the reasons you described. I wanted to stay with them so badly but I just couldn't deal the spotty coverage. Ended up back with Verizon. Hopefully you have better luck!

As far as T-Mobile is concerned I hope you live in a better coverage area than I. Typically if you only stick to cities then your good but if your on the out skirts or in rural areas your screwed on signal. Even though the coverage map said to be strong network coverage where I lived it just wasn't so.
I happened to purchase this phone expecting the development to be near non existent. I was wanting to see if I could use a phone that was non-rooted and bootloader locked for a period of time as I have never done this before in all the years I have used smart phones.
good luck with T-Mobile though.. love what they are doing just hated the service coverage areas.....

Don't switch trust me, I just switched from managing T-maybe to managing Verizon I switched all my lines and have never been happier with the choice. T-Mobile even in a metro area constantly drops calls.

I tried T-Mobile a couple of months ago for exactly the reasons you described. I wanted to stay with them so badly but I just couldn't deal the spotty coverage. Ended up back with Verizon. Hopefully you have better luck!

I switched as well a few months ago and the coverage was so spotty I had to switch back. Good luck though.
