What's the best way to format/wipe? - HTC Incredible S

I want all previous data used by a current Rom completely gone when I install a new Rom. I assume format sd card, factory reset, wipe system wipe dalvik anything else?

SuperWipe from ARHD Rom.

Yeah already did it thanks though. Formated system dalvik data and used windows to format sd. G/f got a weird virus from some crappy ass mp3 download app. Couldn't figure out where the files were hiding. Everything great now.

after running super wipe from ARHD i clear battery stats from the recovery and then flash the ROM.

best way for me:
format system, data, cache, boot and then factory reset and wipe dalvik cache and battery stats..

I thought battery stats should be cleared only when battery is fully charged.. Is doing that on all Rom installation is advisable?

i agree. the correct method for proper calibration is charge to 100%....then wipe the battery stats...drain the battery to zero....charge to 100% again...now use it normally. but i am too lazy to do all this so i just clear it.i dont think it would harm.
however if you dont clear it you will get inaccurate readings on ur battery percentage.

Yeah the reason I was asking was because of the virus a normal wipe didn't work because it was hiding in the SD card.

roms not flashing correctly.

this is on my own phone and has nothing to do with the other thread I posted.
I thought I'd try out open ecclair, so i wiped and flashed it, but I was still stuck on the "tmobile g1" screen for about an hour.
thats when I pulled the batteryand tried again.
same problem.
I pulled the battery, wiped, and flashed cyanogen.
still stuck on g1 screen.
I pulled the battery, wiped, and flashed superD
now I'm on super-D, but I have apps that aren't supposed to be in superD but actually come in cyanogen (Log Collector and Slideme Market)
whats going on?
...you didn't full wipe or did you. Try flashing again.

yeah pretty much...
thanks.
I think the problem with the apps is that I probobly forgot to wipe ext, although I usually do.
and I've never wiped Dalvik. what is it?
and I've never repaired ext either but it always seemed to work fine.
those two are probably why I couldn't change the rom.
I actually dont know much about the Dalvik-Cache except for...well its a cache lol. So yeah I always wipe everything

What can I wipe?

While using a rom.. I wiped battery stats to recalibrate my battery..
For wiping sakes what else I am allowed to wipe that wont affect my phone...?
Cache? ??? I know theres like 4 options, obviously I cant wipe the whole device cos I'd have to reflash..
Dalvic just resets on boot, you could wipe that.

[Q] Whats wrong with my HTC hero?

So I used to have CyanogenMod running on my phone, but it was messing up so I decided to flash the FroYo rom. My hero is sprint and the rom was for sprint phones. But when I flashed the rom my phone wouldn't start up. It just stays on the big "HTC" screen. Ive tryed everything. Any help?http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
Did you wipe (everything!) before flashing the other ROM?
As andythegreenguy asked, did you wipe everything prior to flashing?
Also, how long has it stayed on the HTC screen? Booting a new ROM for the first time can take as long as 15 minutes...
How to wipe?

Boot into recovery, and do a full factory wipe
Getting stuck there is a bootloop.
It's usually caused from not wiping the cache(s).
New Rom:
(Boot into Recovery)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
I like to wipe Batt Stats but you don't really need to.
Just Factory Reset, wipe both caches.
I assume the recovery is similar to the evo's, I've never seen the hero's recovery so it might be different.
A new rom will take a little longer than usual because it needs to rebuild the caches while its on the HTC screen.

That's correct

[Q] Why clear Dalvik and cache?

So every single rom for any phone I've seen says to clear the dalvik and the cache (or maybe its just the "dalvik cache") but when I went from stock to Thriller, I forgot to, and nothing went wrong. In fact, all my settings and apps were all intact from the previous stock rom.
I've considered that the only other phone I'd done any flashing on was a backflip, without Apps2SD and maybe that's why all my apps and settings were intact, so that still leaves me with the question: why clear it?
This may be a noob-ish question, and I apologize. Thanks for any help!

If there are any compatibility issues between the apk dalvik cache of your previous rom and the apks on the new rom wiping dalvik clears the previous apks stored dalvik cache. In most cases you can flash without a problem. But I recommend wiping between rom flashes just to eliminate any potential problems. Flashing something like Thriller over the stock rom you can probably get away with not wiping anything since all the apks are essentially the same. Flashing kernels you don't need to wipe anything. When flashing a rom with a completely different firmware I recommend a full data wipe. Restoring recovery backups such as nandroid require no wiping at all.
Also, wiping dalvik shouldn't affect any of your settings.

When switching ROM with different base apps, it is generally better to wipe caches than to get stuck in a boot loop, or having your apps and launcher FC on you. You never lose anything as the cache rebuilds itself on the next reboot, except maybe a few minutes

If you followed the instructions you did a full data wipe. When you do this the dalvik gets wiped as well. To just wipe dalvik look under the Advanced menu in cwm recovery.

clearing cache
i am using a nand rom in my HD2, and i also want to install another rom via SD in Magldr, but because of kernel issues i cannot load the Rom from SD unless i use the kernal i am advised to use. I am instructed to clear the dalvik and cache, but does this mean that i would lose anything from my current NAND rom? I still want to be able to use that of coarse so i just want to make sure there are no major risks when clearing cache.

Clearing dalvik and cache wont make you lose anything, used to do it with my shift because I'd flash about 10 zips a day sometimes...
Also when it comes to flashing any ROM I format system data cache wipe dalvik cache and do a factory reset just to be sure nothing from a previous ROM is left over also wipe my SD ext partition when running an a2sd ROM, my question is can I safely manually format the emmc partition of the thrill from the mounts and storage option of cwm

[Q] About full wipe!

Hi guys!
As you can see in the title im a lil bit confused about full wipe and i got 1 question!
What's the process of a full wipe cuz i saw in alot of ROMs threads and im aware of not doing something stupid and bricking my phone, can somebody tell me what a full wipe includes?
Aswell i would like to know the steps for a full wipe before flashing a ROM!
Sorry for my bad english and thanks!
Full wipe means all data of previous rom you have installed to be wiped clean, all email accounts, contacts in the address book and apps will be deleted. That is why is always best to backup your apps with Titanium backup
All other things like on your sdcard still stays intact.
Full wipe steps:
1-Reboot into recovery mode ( To enter recovery mode, shut down your phone and wait for it to be completly turned off then you hold the Volume Up + Home + Power )
2-Do wipe data/factory reset.
3-Wipe cache.
4-Go advanced wipe delvik cache
