trying to thether to Kindle Fire - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to use wireless tether to my Kindle fire. I've tried different roms and no luck. I can connect my laptop to my hero but not the Kindle Fire.. Anyone have a KF that thier able to tether to thier hero ? Thanks,,

Probably because the Kindle Fire doesn't connect to Ad-Hoc network, which is what the Hero tethers out. Try tethering to a device that has infrastructure mode for tethering.

So the phones that can tether to the fire are infrastructure mode ? What can be done to the hero to make it support infrastructure mode ? Thanks for your help.

The Hero can't support infrastructure mode. That's why we can't do native WiFi HotSpot. Something with drivers and hardware I presume.

Is there a device (router, bridge, ap, etc.) that can allow the 2 to talk to each other ? Thanks..
I have a Kindle Fire whose wifi is infrastructure mode and my HTC Hero smart phone which is ad-hoc. Can I use a router or bridge to allow these 2 to talk to each other ? Thanks

[q] wifi hotspot

I keep reading that this is possible on the hero, both with and without rooting... I know this is a noob move, but will anyone forgive me and point me to the right forum to accomplish this?
Go to the Market and search for Easy Tether. There is a free app and paid app.
tried that, but it doesn't make the phone into a wifi hotspot... unless i'm missing something...
AFAIK, the only way to do what you want is to root and use this app, Wireless Tether for Root Users

+1 this is the only way that I have found. And Btw this makes a wifi tether via ad hoc and therefore is not an actual hotspot. Think tether not router.

Yeah, it's not infrastructure mode, but you can still connect multiple devices at the same time. Some devices won't connect to ad hoc though

Since I have only ever connected one device at a time to my phone, how much slower is the internet connection when more than 1 device is attached at the same time?
Two works ok, but three surfing at once seems to push it

What if I use my linksys router as a repeater or repeater bridge?
Hell I will try it tomorrow and let you know. I have dd-wrt flashed on my router and I can change my wireless mode to anything. i also have 2 separate wireless reapeters.

Yes, that should work in theory. Don't know if it matters or not but our devices run wireless tether in ad-hoc mode, not infrastructure

I know, but I'm hoping that my router will detect it.
I saw a post on the Incredible boards that they got their wifi tether to work in AP mode... is that not possible for us?
also, I've connected up to 5 devices to my phone at once and it doesn't go too slow as long as my phone has a decent ev/3g signal.

NC, Barnacle and ad-hoc connection

I have Barnacle on my Vibrant. When enabled, it functions as a wireless router, but only in the ad-hoc mode. I use it successfuly with my Windows 7 laptop, but I found no way on the NC to enable ad-hoc mode.
Any ideas? Are there any apps that convert a phone into a regular wireless router I could use?

Barnacle works awesome! Thanks for the heads up of this app!
Wifi Tether app supports infrastructure mode for a true wireless access point (not ad-hoc) so long as your phone's chip is capable of doing it.

The better answer is to install the MobileAP on the Vibrant (if on Eclair), or go ahead and upgrade to a ROM based on a leaked Froyo. This will create an infrastructure mode WiFi network, which the nook will then be able to connect to.

Why is my phone doing AD-HOC?

I'm tring to run WiFi tethering software so I can get internet access on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I have an original Motorola Droid phone. I rooted the phone and when I run any WiFi tethering software it's broadcasting in Ad-Hoc mode. For some reason my Tablet can't see any Ad-Hoc networks. So, this is a big problem for me.
My friend has a Droid Incredible and he has a custom ROM installed on his phone and his phone doesn't broadcast in Ad-Hoc mode, his phone broadcasts with a regular WiFi connection. Why does his work that way and mine only works in Ad-Hoc? Do I have to install a custom ROM to get mine to work in regular WiFi mode? If so, which ROM is recommended?
Another solution is to get my Tablet to recognize Ad-Hoc networks. Is there some way to do that also?
Thanks so much for all your help and time!
Which tethering app are you using?
Both Wireless Tether and the 2.2 default 3G Hotspot app are broadcasting in infrastructure mode.
I remember my Wii not being able to connect to a hotspot created via Wireless Tether - did'nt try 3G Hotspot yet...
Well, I've tried different Hot Spot Apps and they are all the same. I used the same app on both my Droid phone and my friends Incredible phone. His phone worked in Infrustructure and mine worked as Ad-Hoc. I don't know what default 3G Hostspot app you are talking about. My phone didn't come with any. From what I was reading it has to do with the hardware of the phone. Since my phone is so old it only supports Ad-Hoc and the newer phones support Infrustructure. I think that's what people are saying.
I've been reading there is a way to make Tablets see Ad-Hoc but I can't find any information on how to do it with the Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I guess there are different patches and you need to find the right version that's compatible with your Tablet.
So, the only solutions I can see is get a newer phone that supports Infrustructure or to find the patch that works with my Tablet and lets it see Ad-Hoc.
Thanks!

Hi there,
Don't you mean "infrastructure mode"? If so, yes.. This is the default mode for ALL wireless devices which connect to a router..
In fact, it's your router that must be set up in infrastructure mode.. This way, all devices which connect to it will be assigned an ip address and become part of the "infrastructure"..
Give details of what you are trying to accomplish and we might be able to help you..
Have fun,

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I have a kindle fire and I am trying to connect to my w8 to access internet. I used barnacle Wi-Fi tether and my kindle can't see the ssid. Is it that my w8 is not running at infrastructure mode? I am a newbie and thanks for the help.

Hi again,
Ok, assuming that wifi tether is setup ok on your w8, have you tried entering the network details into the kindle?
Maybe the ssid is hidden, so you would need to enter the details manually on the kindle..
Try that first and report back..
Cheers,
CtrlAltDel
Have done that...it still cannot connect. I am able to connect my kindle to my pc using Connectify.
As for my se w8, I was able to connect to the Wi-Fi tether using another phone...

[Q] Trying to make my Kindle Fire 5th gen into a wifi hotspot

No luck getting it to work while running down the list of apps on the google play store. Does any one have any ideas or suggestions?
The why is irrelevant, suffice to say, I want to host a wifi hotspot with the device so it can host a webcam app.

Yes I did. Your post doesn't say what the hotspot would allow clients to connect to. For example, the most common use of an Android device as a "hotspot" is as a wifi hotspot to allow clients (such as a laptop or a wifi-only tablet such as the Fire) to use a phone's LTE connection. But this particular scenario is impossible with the Fire as a "hotspot" because the Fire has no cell radio. So it is not at all clear from your post what your intended Fire "hotspot" would enable clients to connect to.

What do you mean when you say "host a webcam app"? And why does that require a wifi hotspot? And why would it require the "host" device to be a hotspot?
Your post is incomprehensible.

Jesus. I have a wireless ip camera that I want to use the tablet as a host for. It's really that simple. The tablet needs to host a wifi hotspot. I don't give a crap that it won't have an internet connection.
Hence the original question, is there any way to make my tablet into a wifi hotspot?

In that case, you have been asking the wrong question. What you are describing is not a hotspot, it is an ad-hoc wifi network, which you can set up by going into the Android WiFi settings menu, selecting "Add Network," and checking the "Advanced options" box. By definition, a "hotspot" is a wireless access point that allows clients to access the internet. That's the "hot" in "hotspot." That's probably also the reason you didn't have success with any of the apps you tried; they weren't intended to do what you were trying to do.
By the way, when you are asking other people to help you, it's generally a good idea not to act like a complete jackass, especially when you don't know what you're talking about.
I don't get it... I have noticed, especially in the Amazon Fire Threads, that the tenor of the posts are quite rude and inconsiderate. XDA Forums are a terrific place to ask and answer questions and most importantly for me, a place to learn. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! BTW, Thanks XDA!
