The .6 build? I'm a little confused over the different methods i've seen on here... someone point me in the right direction i'll buy you a cookie
im kinda if your shoes too buddy. well the first thing you do is you have to downgrade to .5 version cause the .6 cant be rooted so you need the ruu to downgrade
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661057
so just run that and yes make sure you back up your phone.
then you have follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
i tried to do this guide and i got to the point where im in the recovery and i flash the zip and then reboot and just get stuck on the htc boot screen so after that i dont know what to do.
so i just stuck with the special permissions and the unevoked apk. and it is still root but i cant get roms which sucks cause i want live wallpapers.

Have u guys tried universal androot?
Sent from my fresh hero.
see my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7701291&postcount=36
includes a qr code to download the universal androot app. couldn't be easier. just install the app and click root. then load a recovery by either using rom manager or open a terminal and do the usual flash_image recovery method.
Hello my name is slawson [zfxp on irc]
This is my root guide, how i've rooted every droid i've had so far.
This works with NO COMPUTERS NEEDED!
Also works on
2.0.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.2
A. Download z4root from market
B. Install and run "z4root", click "permanent root"
B1. If all goes well it will say you're rooted.
C. Reboot your phone.
D. Open Market find, and install "Rom Manager"
D1. After Installed open rom manager, and grant su access, now click "Flash recovery rom" it will be the first option in the list.
D2. it will say Recovery flashed after all options have been selected.
D3. Download your favorite rom, and copy it to the root of your sd card.
E. Reboot into Recovery
E1. Wipe data/clear cache
E2. Install zip from sdcard
F. ENJOY YOUR FLASHED DROID!
Thanks goes out to all the devs who helped make this happen!
Tested working:
Droid 2.0
Droid 2.0.1
Droid 2.1
Droid 2.2 FRG01B
Droid 2.2 FRG22D
**Also tested working on htc g1, MyTouch3g v1.2[/SIZE]
Will this work with 2.2 Froyo? Noob Here.
Yep works flawlessly!
Ok Im good so far...How do I grant su access?

So far so good. But, how can you tell what the roms look like?
Thank you Slawson, and especially whoever/whomever wrote universandroot!
Worked great! I was running stock froyo 2.2 ,updated OTA , but now I'm rooted again and don't plan on unrooting. Hopefully no issues in future like some had using other apps.
Saw this earlier an dl'd to phone but didn't get chance to try it till got off work. I was getting aggrivated at frg01b not allowing me to install sbf recovery so I could get back root after OTA.
As you said now on to the ROM's.
Couple of questions: Does this work on the Droid? Once rooted, can setcpu be added to overclock or do I have to load a custom rom? What about using Autokiller? Thanks for the info and for making it so easy to root!!

1st - Yes, I have moto droid 1
2nd - Yes, have installed SetCPU without custom ROM and have set it up to overclock but tops out at 800mhz on mine, probably because stock kernel. ROM is next for me this weekend.
3rd - Yes, Also have installed AutoKiller.
Have fun!!
does it allow u to unroot as well?
edit... nm its says it right there in the app

However, what about the FRG22 build? From what I've read, it doesn't work with that 2.2 yet. Also, VZW has slated it to be OTA soon.
If that happens, won't we all lose out root?

EDIT: My bad for not following the instructions EXACTLY AKA using your link to download.
Universal Androot + Froyo FRG22D = Fail.
The exploit for root was patched in this Froyo build to my knowledge.
As of this posting no version of Universal AndRoot will work or any 1click root app for that matter.
But there are still ways to root.

Something about this just does not sound right to me.
If RomManager had the ability to push a recovery on any device we would never have had the need to use RSD Lite to push the 2.01 spf in the first place. Rooting is easy enough overall. The Recovery is what takes effort.
When you tested this had you ever tried to unlock your phone in the past via RSD Lite or other method?
Nope it had never been rooted before, and this was my first attempt, and it just so happened to work.
So try it before you knock it, or don't post

No, I rather have an intelligent discussion about the process so that people can read and be well informed
I can't test it because my Droid already has the hacked bootloader. Once that is done you can flash recoveries all day, hence why I asked to begin with.
As I understand the technology pushing the recovery requires more than just root access. So you can understand why I would ask about the details.
I hope you are right btw. It would make my next Droid 1 rom loading so much easier.
Honestly, my droid was brand new, i used this method with a mytouch3g so i figured i'd give it a shot with my droid, and it worked, and i saw the previous method of rooting with the droid, and i decided to post, as this was so much easier.
But yeah, a healthy convo is needed to pick the brains of others.
Worked perfect for me rooting my roomie's Moto Droid 1. Installed Ultimate Droid 7, custom kernel and SetCPU and OC'd to 1.1ghz

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

Did the permenant root allow you to continue with the process?
RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

I'm in the process of trying it...its been stuck at Rebooting for a couple mins now... :/
Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck
Sorry for the noob question but i searched and couldnt find a way to root that isnt months old, just want to make sure i do this right, im barrowing a hero since my nexus broke, and i wanted to root it and make it 2.3.3 is there a simple way to root and install a custom recovery to make this happen
All root will be months old because this is an older device. z4root is the way to go. I'll give you a download link. The only 2.3.3 ROM is flashinglight's Sense 2.3.3 ROM. Once you use z4root and it says rebooting, you need to manually reboot it. Once rebooted download ROM Manager and select the flash recovery option.

the only thing im thinking is im typing the wrong commands? im following the steps given on the unlocker site. or maybe a wrong recovery file?
im so upset, but i will keep searching. is there a way to remove the apk file of clockwork from my evo and then install it on the hero?
When you unzipped the file did you do it on your pc or phone?? Also you should check to make sure that the .img is not in any folders. Just on your sd and not inside of your download folder or if you used root explorer to extract the
.img then it would place the .img in the extracted folder on your sd therefore you would have to move it from that folder to the sd. Also here is the rom manger apk if that will help

Its the free version not sure why it wouldn't show on the market for you.
Hopefully this helps.

wow thanks a lot guy. im flashing as i type. i will let you know what happens.
this is weird... i installed and flashed cwm recovery and it went fine. but it gave me an error about the license being out of date and need to reinstall the app. and wont let me dload any roms.
Well you don't wanna dl roms from it never do that. Always download roms via xda. Its basically meant to be used as an alternate way to flash a recovery. Also its way outdated. You can always flash the latest cwm. Now that you have a recovery loaded you should go s-off via darch that way you can flash via h-boot and its a great safety net. If you want the s-off.zip let me know.
Edit: Also are you on a stock but rooted rom???

success... i have done it. worked like a charm. i am now running cm7 on it. i wonder if im already s-off since i flashed cm7 and it worked without a problem?
xda rocks... posted the question around 6ish and got what i needed by midnight. the people here are very helpful. i know the hero is out-dated but i had it laying around thought id give it a whirl to give my evo a break and its working great. i have one more question, using the current cm7 rom and current cm7 kernel, can i overclock to the highest with no problem? or should i just stay safe?

Every phone is different. Try adjustment your Max one frequency at a time untill the phone reboots. When it does that's your safe max. Do the same for the min and you should be all good. Warning overclocking will drain your battery.
