Stock recovery: Failed to mount sdcard. No such directory - Motorola Droid 3

Hi .
I am trying to install an update for the Xt860.
I didn't root the device. Everything is stock. But once I copied the update file to the sdcard and go to recovery I get "Failed to mount sdcard. No such directory"
So can't install the update. What am I doing wrong? Please help. I am in Holland and I don't think I will be recieving any OTA's here. Thanks a lot.

Is the update on your external or internal SD card?

On the internal.
I am normally on a SGS2. This droid xt860 is the phone of my friend. He didn't buy another sd. So there is only 1 sd card where also all the app folders etc are. So yeah internal.
It should be there right?

Urgent help needed :(

I have had my g1 for about a year now and I rooted it a few months ago. I've been trying to update the rom but everytime I try to format the sd card on my pc it says no disk found in drive F. I have tried it on other computers. I tried it via usb and a card reader. When I put update.zip into the root folder it says it cant find it. Please someone help! I need my phone to be amazing again!
Is the card formatted in Fat32?
Yeah its formatted to Fat32
you have to assign the a sd card a drive letter.
assign the sd card a drive letter.
How do I do this?
Well I just assigned it a letter and the same thing happens. I really am stuck.
What are you trying to update from? What update are you trying to apply? What recovery are you using? Do you have a file manager on your phone like androzip? If you can answer some questions, you may have a few workarounds....

You could try doin it with your phone (since you said you're rooted) using recovery
If you're using Cyanogen's recovery there's a good guide on androidandme.com
http://bit.ly/61CXFo
If you're using Amon_Ra's recovery I think it's automated, I've never used it before but from what I understand the you have the option to do it from the recovery menu
I'm currently running cyanogen mod 4.1.11.1 I'm not sure of the recovery image and I am trying to update to the next version of cyanogen. I think it might be a problem with my phone :S I really dont know. I have looked online and nothing seems to work I can put any update onto the sd card but when I try to update on my phone it says the file doesnt exist
it should say what recovery you are using in the recovery screen.
connect to wifi spot, download the new amon ra recovery, and move it from the download folder to the root of the sdcard using androzip (from the market).
follow the steps to flash the new recovery in the amon thread.
the next steps from there are up to you.....you can try to repartion your card using the menu option in recovery and then try to mount your g1 to your computer in the recovery menu. the recovery will allow you to choose what size partitions you want (fat32, ext, and swap) and do all of it for you. very handy.
once you get it to mount to your computer, you're in business.
if you think your card is ok as is, you could always download the htc file and cm4.2.6 directly to your g1, move them from download folder to sd root, wipe everything and flash.
either way, if you run into problems with your card, you maybe without phone until you get a good card.
good luck
Hey thanks for the great replies. Still no luck though I downloaded the amon ra recovery image and did what it said but when on the terminal emulator I type mount -a and it says 'mounting /dev/block/mmcb1k0p2 om /system/sd failed: no such file or directory'

My problem was, when i was in RomManager, i asked it to flash latest recovery, then 2 choices popped up, Xoom, and Xoom WiFi, well mine is a wifi version.. So i chose it... After going into recovery, i couldnt mount the SD card any more... Hmmm... Updates are good arent they? (that was to ver 5.x.x.x)
So i went back into Rom Manager and did it again, this time i chose just XOOM for the model, it went back to version 4.x.x.x.. Then i could mount the SD Card again...
Hope this helps..

[Q] Rooting problem regarding LQ2 and Dr K's guide

Hello all,
Relatively new to the XDA scene and trying to root my N7000 running on Meteor network in Ireland. Yesterday I upgraded via Kies to LQ2. I'm trying to follow these steps to get root +CWM:
Root instruction
Download the Files first and put in your SDCARD [CWM zip][ SU-Busybox-Installer.zip][ SU-Uninstaller-signed.zip]
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage. (use vol up/down to select, power to enter)
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD(Now use touch function to select choice)
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted
But when I try to "Apply update from external storage" I get this error: "E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)". I have checked the storage and it is definitely in there when I look through Settings>Storage> Misc files. What am I doing wrong here? I have looked for similar threads but didn't find an answer.
Currently on:
Baseband version - N7000XXLPT
Kernal version - 3.0.15 - N7000xxlq2 - cl605927
Build number IML74K.XXLQ2
Cheers.

He's saying put the .zip file both in root directory of your internal storage space and also in the microSD's root. Don't extract anything.
this right?

I understand WHAT I'm supposed to do. I just don't understand HOW to do it.
Am I meant to do this using my pc?
My sdcard is external storage(?), while my phone is internal (if I understand correctly). I do not know how to save the 3 files once downloaded to my pc onto my internal storage. Based on the thumbnail provided some posts up it seems I already have the files in my external storage.
Thats the internal SD card folder. The external show as ext_sd on the phones file manager. You can copy then there using either the internal file manager or via pc.
On pc it shows as sd card though. It can be slightly confusing.

Recovery can't access External SD

I've read 96 threads about people can't make the recovery (stock recovery, Ra recovery, CWM recovery) find and run the update.zip on the external SD card, the solutions have been:
reformat the SD card
use other SD card
reformat SD card on CWM recovery
repartition SD card on CWM recovery
flash an other ROM
flash to stock rom then the custom ROM
After trying every procedures some pleople and I still getting (CWM log):
" mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 on /sd-ext failed: invalid argument "
" W:try_mount failed to mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /sd-ext (error: 17 - File exists) "
Please help...
If there is other method to fix, please help to fix
If can't be fixed, please give me another method to flash the new ROMs, all of them are in .zip file to be loaded in external SD card.
Moved to Q&A
This is the solution - didn't know it- :
When Ext-SD not working put the "ROMname".zip into the internal memory (internal SDdisk), run CWM and load it, the flashing process won't touch the internal SDdisk.
Hope this help the others.

Actually, your ROM should always be flashed from your internal SD, I'm not sure where you read otherwise.
Also, you might wanna concider reformating your external SD to FAT32 (full format). If that doesn't work, your external might be bad.
How do you copy a file from external to internal SD?
I can boot into android's recovery but do not know how to copy a good update.zip to the internal SD card.
Is there a way to do this on-phone? The files are right there on the external SD. Or do I have to connect it to my computer?

My situation:
Using Open Recovery I tried to install CM7 with custom kernel on my XT720
It gave an error: "assert failed: write_raw_image... Status 7" As I was looking that up, my phone blackscreened. After a while I pulled the battery.
Then on startup it went into a bootloop after a picture of a broken screen saying "2ndboot kernel restart in progress." (Presumably the kernel wasn't properly applied?)
Trying to boot into bootloader says battery is too low.
Phone will only turn on when plugged into outlet.
What I think I need to do:
- Copy a good update from my external SD over the bad update.zip on the internal SD, and apply the update to reset the kernel, etc.
- Open Recovery could do this, if I could load it.
- I could load Openrecovery if I could get the bootloader to run,
- I could get the bootloader to run if my battery would charge

The XT720 is a completely different device. You're in the Captivate section (SGH-897) here. You might be able to get better support over there as I don't know much about that device.
Will Do

Thanks! I posted here because I have the same problem with recovery, hoping there would be a similar solution. Asked in the other forums.

[Q] External SD-Card not mounted (HTC ONE)

Hello folks
I opened this thread as having serious problem with extSD Card. During rooting and flashing process I accidentally wiped both int and ext contents. Luckily brought back my phone from grave as obviously no OS and full erase. I installed new OS with Sideload using Hasoon2000's All-in-One toolkit. Unfortunately I cannot bring back mounted ext SD card and also PC seen only Internal storage. This is boring as I cannot flash anything. More over I worry to reset phone because often freeze during boot.
Read plenty of threads and checked-out everything possible with no avail. I desperately look for viable solution help to bring back my phone to right order.
I am sure this thread helps many of us with identical problem.
Thanks for ideas and clues! :good:
Cheers. M.

Any luck? Having the same problems.
Having the same problem.. External_SD card won't mount since i unlocked my bootloader, again.. NO S-Off yet. I have a custom ROM flashed via ADB Side Load... But as soon as i flashed the custom ROM, External_SD card was fine... Cuz my HTC One X won't mount either all of a sudden, and That phone's straight, no worries there... My device manager has the caution sign in portable devices... I wanna say it's my computer, but still could be my phone... I'm using TWRP recovery and i'm able to see what's on my SDCard through there, before that i had CWM and it didn't do ish for me... Any insight on this would be awesome..
