So i finally decided to root (hurray), but i'd like to remain on stock. All i really want to change is the notification bar using a metamorph. Will this work? All the metamorphs say they will work with CM or Modaco or whatever but none say stock? I'm new to rooting (i've been perfectly content with stock up until now) and just had this question thanks.
Oh one more question while im at it. I've heard the term nandroid alot, but all i seem to find on that is the Rom Manager app? Can anyone shed some light on this? I know its a backup but i don't know how to make one or what to use to restore them.
-Cheers
I think morph only works with deodexed rom, I'm still searching this as well. I'm in the same boat as yours, still in stock rom, stock recovery but rooted.
Nandroid backup accessible from custom recovery
nandroid is a nand (memory) backup tool that works from recovery. It essentially takes a snapshot of your system that you can restore at a later date.
To theme/morph your phone you will need a deodexed rom... there are few around, including mine (Kang-o-rama 0.9). My later rom (v1.0) is based on CM6 so be aware of the differences.
well i was looking at doing that simple kinda one click root app, then do the rom manager. but how do you resotre a backup from rom manager if your rom breaks or everything FC's?

you bot into recovery and restore your nand backup if for some reason you totally trash your working ROM, whcih i just did 2 days ago! but if you having a working ROM and just want to flash another ROM, using ROM manager is a gift from god. its very easy to use it
to answer your question, yes you have to be using a deodexed ROM. and there is a stock froyo ROM that is deodexed, there's a thread dedicated to it somewhere around here. just flash that ROM and theme away. the first thing i always do is switch to a black status bar with meta morph. i finally have a theme zip file with things exactly how i want, my fav circle battery icons, fav wifi icons, pure black status bar. it sits on my sd card and i always flash it immediately.

but does rom manager use nandroid? im a bit lost on this. When i make a backup in rom manager is that a nandroid? do i boot into recovery and restore that backup from rom manager?
Thanks for helping, you wouldnt happen to know which rom that is, that looks stock?
Yes ROM manager uses nand backup. It just automates it for you. I don't have the link to the ROM but it is stock with busy box, deodexed, etc. You'll have to browse the threads, its near the first few pages.
The thread I was thinking about is titled:
Re: [ROM] FRF91 Stock, Deodexed, rooted, busybox, battery %, TB alert/wake/unlock 8/4/10

thanks man, do i just boot to clockwork recovery once ive made a backup and restore a backup if anything goes wrong during flashing?
Did someone attempt to make stock battery mod with numbers?
ALWAYS Nandroid Backup First in case you change your mind or experience a boot loop.
install via Clockworkmod and enjoy~!
Any chance for a screenshot of how it looks like please?
has anyone tried this on stock rom ?
it works. but I don't like it at all. Way to much changes. It changes the whole framework and even some effects. It's a whole theme and not only the battery.
i like the circular battery with number better
hey XDAs,
when i downloaded a custom rom like modaco, i had every app in a specific folder with framework, resources etc.
now i downloaded one of the stock roms of these but when i tried to open it, i only had a .bin and a .fls file.
is there a stock rom (would be best) version, where i have all apps separated in folders like the custom roms?
my plan is to add/remove apps, change the launcher and change all app icons, starting with this (this is what i have so far) and put the whole package in one rom.zip to have it installed by clockworkmod

when you want to use stock rom you need smartflash or nvflash tool to flash files, it reset everything except your SD card.
.fls file is for baseband and .bin file is a ROM
and when you want to modify sooooooo much, why not use source from MoDaCo, i mean his zip file, all is based on stock ROM with extra benefits.
just modify his files and try installing it into yours, and by modifying i am guessing you wont sign back your zip file after modification.
i tried lots of custom roms so far and had a hard time to get back to stock till i found nvflash
so these stock roms from the thread can only be installed via nvflash?
problem is, by now i´m only able to change some icons or remove/add complete apps AND i would like to have the LG lockscreen, stock statusbar icons, stock toggle bar in pulldown menu and so on.....and no rom but the stock rom could fulfill these wishes
last chance i had in mind was the modaco online kitchen but that is for premium users only.....
i MIGHT sell my phone on ebay and i would like to add a complete rom with stock apps and MY custom icons as a bonus.....
for example: optimus speed stock version but if YOU (buyer) want to, i pre-install some unique custom icons and stuff
modaco FR17 is downloadable for everyone.... and if you go stock then go COMPLETE stock, that is what STOCK mean....
and just nvflash and your problem is solved for selling it, but just remember choose only the firmware from region where your phone is from. ...
and if my post help, do hit THANKS button. feels good.

yeah well, putting back to stock is not a problem.....
i still could change all icons via root manager but that would take to much time and effort.....think i have to give the modaco FR17 a shot. you mean fr17-update-modacocustomrom-2x-kitchen-unsigned no?
yeah, its FR17, its nice ROM feels stock like, but have few extras, which you can remove if you dont like using Titanium Backup, the easy way.
Hey guys. Can someone point me to the right direction for this. If possible an easier way. It seems i can't find anything.
I have rooted V20b stock rom. I want to change the battery indicator in the notificaiton bar. It is a very useless icon. I have to replace it! But i dont wanna flash a whole rom just for that.

Thanks. I looked at the website. So how will this work. I am gonna install CWM. Will rebooting into recovery make me lose all my data? Do i need to do anything before that? I've never used CWM. I just flashed the new rom and don't wanna re-install everything again.
Don't mind the question. I figured it out myself. Therad can be closed/deleted.
I realised when I ask questions, I always lump them into one paragraph, so I thought maybe I number them.
These questions are about boot animations.
1. What are the risks of installing/flashing a boot animation, if any?
2. For the I9305, where are the boot animations located? (I'm rooted, I searched for the files in Root Explorer, and there were some, namely bootanimation, bootsamsungloop and bootsamsung)
3. Can the boot animations that are made for other devices work on this device?
Thank you to those who answer my questions.
1. As far as i know there are no risk on putting custom boot animations since it won't replace any system files.
2. I don't know where it is really located on i9305 but it should be the same... on mine it's located on systemroot/data/local/.
(Custom boot animation requires a custom kernel by the way.)
3. I'm not quite sure on this but it may work since custom boot animations are just zip files.
OK, some more questions,
1. Do you need a custom kernel to modify the status bar and stuff?
2. I read more about boot animations, it seems that you can flash them through CWM without a custom kernel. Is that true?
3. What are the benefits and risks of flashing a custom kernel?
Hit thanks if I helped you! Sent from my awesome i9305!

1. Nope. You need a custom framework such as Jkay's framework to modify the status bar. I just don't know if jkay's framework will work on the i9305 you can try searching the forums for a custom framework for the i9305 and see if you can modify the status bar.
2. Oh right you can just flash them through cwm. Kinda forgot sorry lol.
3. Risk of a custom kernel? Hmm... i think there are none, in fact custom kernels are way more better than stock kernels in my opinion. I've been running a custom kernel 3 weeks after i got my s3 and i've not encountered a single problem so far. Benefits of running a custom kernel really depends on how you configure it.

Jkay's framework works like a charm, but with Samsung based ROM's (JB 4.1.2).
Ok, one last question (hopefully)
If I flash the stock Samsung ROM (if I feel like I want to), will all my mods I've flashed be erased, and returned to stock Samsung? Like, if I have installed boot animations, status bar mods, root, custom kernel, will all these be gone? Will I return to stock Samsung ROM like out-of-the-box? (I understand that if you flash a ROM, that is either the same ROM or an updated version of it, you wouldn't have to erase data, wipe cache to install the ROM right?) I know that CWM will not be gone, I will have to flash stock recovery, but this i'm not 100% sure.

I'm not quite sure what you mean but i think i've tried it once. I was on EMMA2 firmware and I upgraded to EMC2 via Mobile Odin Pro. I think it only kept my apps, settings and some mods but i encountered some problems so what i did it start from scratch and restored some apps by using Titanium Backup. And CWM won't be gone as long as you don't flash another custom recovery or the stock recovery.
My point here is if you want everything to go smoothly is...
1 Backup everything via Nandroid.
2. flash the stock rom
3. root it
4. Install any mod you want may it be a custom kernel, rom, framework etc.
This way you won't encounter any problems while flashing a new stock ROM. But hey my understanding could be wrong Better search the forum deeply since more users might answer your question properly.

As far as I know, restoring/flashing stock ROM will erase everything on your internal memory, cause flashing stock ROMs are trought/with Odin (*.tar or *.md5 file). So, be careful what you're doing!
But what I understand is if you flash a ROM that is an update or the same version of the ROM that you are on, your data doesn't wipe, oh well, I learnt something new today.
Hit thanks if I helped you! Sent from my awesome I9305!
I used this boot enablemod install to get them working and just flash the boot files

More info here aswell, i think if the animation is not compatible you just get a black screen.

nah, flashing with odin doesn't wipe data. but you'll need to do it manually anyway, same as flashing any rom
Thanks to everyone who answered my questions! (basically everyone who posted in this thread-except me) But I have read from many places (on XDA, AndroidForums and many other places) that if you are upgrading from a ROM, or flashing the same ROM, you do not need to wipe data unless the developer asks for a wipe.
yup, I was talking about flashing a different ROM.

You can check the Android Development section of the forum for this device, and under the Index there are many.
