Ok, so I have 2 issues with power on and shut down:
1)When my phone was stock with 2.1 Eclair, the power on animation (the "S" forming) was much smoother and synced with the sound. Now, when I flashed to 2.2 Froyo and 2.3.6 Gingerbread, it goes at like 2 FPS and it's way offsync with the sound.
2)Also, the shutdown has a big delay, I mean: it shuts down, but then the BACK and MENU button leds remain lighted and it takes 7 to 13 seconds for them to shut off, and when they shut off the phone vibrates.
How can I solve these 2 problems?
Dont look at the screen whilst turning on and off.

I can not seem to get my NC to power off completly. I have tried holding the power button for 15 seconds and I have tried holding the power button then hitting the power off completly soft button that appear's.
The screen turns off ... but when I go back later to turn on my NC it was only in sleep mode.
Any thoughts ?
Holding just the power button and the home button until it powers down works for me to fully power down. Sometimes I need to hold both again to turn back on.
Could it be that the Nook is powering on by itself after a power down? I've run into this a couple times so far. As well, for the longest time my 2.1 Milestone had this problem. I would do a full power down, and some time after the phone would boot up by itself. This was later addressed in a small update to the 2.1 that I'm running on the phone.

Mmmmm well this situation would suck. Not sure how to fix this then. It does seem like it is powering down and rebooting itself a bit later .. ?
I only have to hold the power button for two or three seconds, then the power off dialog box appears.
Over the last few weeks my completely stock (I've not even rooted it as yet) Nexus 1 has developed a behavior where, after some time, it fails to completely turn on.
During a normal turn on the screen comes alive, the hard icon buttons at the bottom light up, and the phone asks me to enter my unlock pattern. All is good.
Then, after turning it on several times in normal usage, pushing the power button will cause the hard icon buttons to light up, but the screen does not come on. The bottom icons will remain lighted and then go off in the same pattern that you'd see if you'd pressed the power button and the screen came on but you then didn't attempt to log in. After about 15 seconds the screen goes dark again. Pressing the power button for an extended period of time does not change the behavior with the bottom icons or the screen. With no screen I can't seem to do anything.
The "fix" has been to take the battery out for several seconds, and then put it back in. Then touching the power button will boot up the phone as normal.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? I cannot think of any software that installed that corresponded to when this behavior started. Taking the battery out for a few seconds is a consistent, if temporary, fix.
Again, its a stock phone:
AndroidOS 2.3.4

Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-59463-g52630a3

Try holding the power button for a long time (around 20 seconds) when Stuck on HTC Logo to force restart.
Or you can hold power and volume down to enter bootloader menu and factory reset (not recommended because I don't know if it will make it work again).

The cache probably got corrupted so your phone wouldn't boot.
Glad I could help
Don't forget the thanks button
Once a day, and sometimes once every other day the screen will naturally go to sleep after a minute or whatever I have it set to, and then wont come back on. I know its just the screen because I can click volume buttons and hear the volume adjustment beep, and when I click the power button I can see the soft keys light up at the bottom of the phone, and then darken again when I click the power again.
The only fix I have found is to hold (POW + VOL UP + VOL DWN) until the phone force shuts down.
I have an AT&T M7 running the latest CM11 nightly.

Test it on another ROM and if the issue occures there too, it's likely a Hardware issue. Then you have to live with it or send it in to the warranty service.
But since it's a CM11 nightly it is likely a ROM related issue, so wait for an update or just change to the stable version.
So randomly today my screen stopped working. I can text myself and hear it ring, as well as the LED indicator is working. So, how to I force shut down the phone without the screen other than just letting the battery die?
hold all four buttons til it reboots. happened to me and a bunch of other people yesterday...no idea what the catalyst is.

No need to do all that. Volume down + power for like 10 seconds. It's in the manual, it's the equivalent to a battery pull
ymmv. when it happened to my phone this did not work, only all four keys did.
