[Q] Background Data Automatic switch off (How to) - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Devs.
As the topic title suggests i would like to make a request about a specific function in my Note.
I would like an app or something that automatically disables Background Data and Auto Sync after a period of time. The reason of course being battery drain.
I tend to enable Background Data and after i do my business i tend to forget it on and it crunches my battery.
Could any of you with the technical knowledge help me out?
Thank you
Edit/ Does anyone know how to do the above with a known app or anything? I tried Tracker but got even more confused.
Thanks

Did you try tasker or llama? I personally use llama. I use it keep active background d sync on at work or home. And off otherwise.

Yes, i thought so myself, but due to the nature of the request i didn't know where it would fit best. I posted it here where it would get some developers attention for sure.
I will have to look at those applications and see what they do to answer whether or not they do what i want.

Questions always belong in development.

Understood.

I think u r now at right place to question, n u dont need new development, just use phone weaver application. It is enough, even much more function you will get.

Probably too obvious, but hold the power button for a second, select disable data?

I just tried that but i noticed that disabling the data network mode(when you press the power button for awhile) does not switch off the Background data option in Accounts and Sync. Unless of course it stops the data from running without apparently changing the setting anyway...

You may want to take a look at the JuiceDefender apps, in the Custom setting, under schedule, you can change background data sync setting

Apologies if this has been said already.
Good post!
Some apps gathered and despatched location information even when an application was not running and some sent updates every 30 seconds.

First of all, anyone have a list of the apps? And secondly, could the above be the reason that alot of people running Android suffer worse battery loss than others?
u can find a setting like that next to the gps switch in the settinngs menu

Dunno, but explains high data usuage. 1gb plus for me on moderate use

Nope, apps on the android market are not vetted or checked.
You are expected to check the permissions an app uses, and decide to install or not. When one of our team published an app, it appeared within seconds on the market available for install.

Very informative.

Im not so much annoyed they are getting information from me. At the end of the day there is very little information they can take.
BUT:
I am annoyed that apps are doing things I have not asked them too. Thats the single most annoying thing an application can possibly do!
I want my phone to do what I ask of it.
Not what some developer wants... What are they? A bunch of little steve jobs?!
Im glad the devs here are trustworthy..

Tayutama's JPM Froyo w/Xcaliburinhand's Re-oriented Kernel - 11/04/2010 -- possible security concern
Installed the above ROM.

Working good on my Captivate.
One concern: How do I take off the "minus" marks on the app icons that lets us delete apps right from the home screen (the screen we get when we click on the home button).
I see this as a security risk. I have app protector pro. But then, we can just delete the app protector pro in this mode without even asking for any password or anything, and all my apps are open for everyone to use.
Could anyone please help me take off this option to quick uninstall apps from home screen.
This thread is a joke, right?
wow just great now this post with almost the exact same title as the rom post will get me confused which is which from now on

Nope. I am serious. So far I realized that unless a person knew how to mod a Captivate, he didn't know how to access protected apps. But now, even a layman can just delete the 'app protector pro' and access all the apps that are supposed to locked by it.

You do know that once you rooted your phone, anyone with a little knowledge can do much more than simply delete apps... just don't lose your phone or give it to an iphone buddy who might wonder what the neat little thingys on your screen do
Bye. What launched are you using that you see this in.... and deleting an icon from your home screen does not uninstall it on any that I have used

Not the icon. Like when u press the home icon, u can see all the apps present on ur device. For user installed apps, u can see a small "minus" in a circle on the right top of app icon, just like in iphone when u go to edit mode. click on that, and it will uninstall the app.

Pardon me if my concern is not really one. I am just expressing myself.
I use Application Protection from the market. Upon uninstalling any app it always asks for the pin. There is no removing the program without it.

Right, this is as long as the app is there. I am telling about a situation where the protection app itself is removed. I could remove it without it asking me for the pin.

Another possible solution is to install another launcher that dosen't have uninstall in the application tray or doesn't work at this time (my LG Optimus below) and use root explorer to remove the two launcher and reboot.

Sounds logical. But I am on Cognition 2.4.1 ROM now
Why not just have a lockscreen?
You do realize that if someone gets ahold of your phone everything can be taken out by someone who is skilled enough... right?

Others have already pointed this out, but what you need to do is dl and install a different launcher from Market and then uninstall the TWLauncher. Problem solved.
Just because TWLauncher is the default in Cog 2.4.1 doesn't mean that you have to use it. Get another launcher. Or you could try never letting your phone out of your sight...

Is there a wifi app that does this

Im looking to see if there is an app that will turn off wifi when the screen turns off and switches it back on when you unlock the screen again.
The captivates wifi sleep policy is broke when not set to "never" so hoping there is an app to do the above or maybe it wouldn't be hard to make.
Recommend posting questions in the Q&A section next time, but a great app for that would be Tasker. Allows you do to that and a lot more conditional settings with your phone. Can buy it from the Market.
ultimate juice, the paid version..

Ok thanks for the tip. Will post in qa next time. Might need some dev help though figuring out why the wifi policy isn't working
Download Ryanza lagfix and there is a built in option called wifi timeout. Its also free

Full Customization Double Tap Home

Not sure if anyone else found this or if it is in other ROMs but in 2.3.4 HKTW ROM you can customize the app launched by double tapping the home button to whatever you want. You just need to change the line 'double_tap" in the settings storage (com.motorola.blur.providers.settings) settings.db. It requires you to put in the <full app name>/<full app process> (not sure the way I said that is right) like com.yahoo.mobile.client.android.im/com.yahoo.mobile.client.android.im.YahooMessenger
Just realized I probally should have put this in general not Dev....sorry. Dev's if you can put this into an app or something that be sweet too.
I thought you can change that in settings in froyo.. Can you not in gb?
Xda app via atrix
In stock froyo for ATRIX there was a limited number of options for double tapping home

Yes, but this trick work also on froyo..
In settings storage->settings.db->settings->double_tap
I think it would be good to be part of atrix mods app!! NFH should add this!

sorry, i don't want to be the bad guy, but i have seen this on all stock firmwares...nothing new, just another great "dev" post, like the haptick feedback one...
please let keep this forum clean for real developing mods. Use general for discovered little things.

Yea thank you for explaining to me that which I already mentioned in my own post (That it should have went in General).
what is the string if i want to set phone wakeup/sleep if double tap
I don't think you can. Problem is two fold.
1) you need an app to call
2) the touchscreen turns off when the screen is off and if this did not happen then it would cost a lot of battery life.

[Q] disable screen timeout via ROM?

Like others, I want the option for my phone to stay awake (and, even better, logged in) when it's charging. Can anyone tell me whether the Viper ROM has this feature? I can't tell from looking at their thread in the dev forum. I recall seeing something like this in one of the other ROMs (though I forget which). I don't really want to go through the trouble of flashing ROMs first just to figure this out.
I am running Viper Rom 1.0.3 and can confirm there is the option to disable screen time out .

Um yeah, sorry, wrong paradigm: translate "stau logged in" to "screen remains unlocked". I better get that straight before we go to Android 4.2 and really have multiple user accounts.

Well, thanks again for your help. I went ahead and jumped to Viper 1.03. So far, so great!
