Okay. As you can see by my post count I'm a newb to ALL of this, so please be patient.
I just recently, within the last week maybe, got a HTC Hero. I immediately updated to 2.1. (No custom rom or anything, my device is not even rooted.)
I honestly do not want a custom rom. To me they almost all look ugly and I have a feeling they're not as stable. Either way, I don't want one.
I do, however, want to overclock my phone. Is there a way to do this without getting a custom rom that removes/adds stuff?
Thank you.
To overclock, you have to root.
I think Jus10o has posted a flashable kernel that allows overclocking on any Sprint-based 2.1 ROM, including stock, but I am not sure. I imagine he'll chime in if he has.
Just out of curiosity, what is that you don't like about custom ROMs? Fresh ROM (not FreshToast) is basically the official ROM made more stable. A lot of people have a lot more problems with the official ROM than they do with custom ROMs, or so my experience has gone. Sprint and HTC fix problems once a year (it seems..) where as the devs here hop on problems with their ROMs instantly. Most get things fixed the same week they're noticed.

Okay. Thank you. I suppose my next step is to look at how to root my phone and finding that kernel..
As far as custom ROMs go, I don't see a need for one. The ONLY issue I have with my phone is the occasional lag, which I would hope to fix with an overclock. Not even sure that would help it, but I want to try it anyway.
Thanks for the help.
Had too many questions so I posted them all here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044871
check the thread where the theme was downloaded.
there are a million issues when applying themes to darkys ROMs. i have experienced this many times.
the problem is the ROM takes up to much space under /system / data ( i think ) and you have to remove certain things from that folder in order for the theme to successfully apply itself.
Some work 1st time, some dont work at all.
Thanks for the reply.
Is that so? What would be the best ROM for applying themes if that's the case? All I read and hear is Darky's ROM this Darky's ROM that so I went for that instead.
I think I found the problem - I didn't have CWM installed... We'll see how it goes.
Oh right, well now you have CWM try again and see how it goes.
if you wanna change ROM i suggest making your own at www.romkitchen.org << fantastic place for customising ROMs to your own liking.
i failed again, i don't know what im doing wrong! hahaha.
i made a new thread cause i had too many questions.
All you hear is darky rom this darky rom that is not from this forum . Its just one of many .Read the posts in development section for a flavour of roms .
Bit like saying we all know MacDonald's therefore its the best food in the world .
jje
haha you have made a new thread and no body has replied.
you would of been better off sticking to this one.
I've had to reinstall 2.3.3 using ODIN four times now... What do you two suggest I do when it comes to choosing roms? I'm sick of having to reinstall every time I get the bootloop cause the installation of a theme went wrong.
2 options man..
Stop flashing the theme, or try another rom.
Easy as that
I don't try the same theme every single time, there's only one theme I've been able to flash and it was ugly as shet.
Any rom recommendations?
Is your current ROM 'De-odexed' Meaning, is your ROM a custom ROM or a stock ROM
I believe it may be de-odexed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
Darky's rom v10 RC4
yea it will be de-odexed.
try another ROM.

I've decided to reinstall Darky's ROM. I just read somewhere that it may be in the bootloop cause of the bootanimation.zip or something and that if I delete that it'll get out of the bootloop? I got out of the thread, I forget where it is
/system / media bootanimation.zip
hello all
i did a search to find the most used and spreaded kirnel and i've found it! it was a poll and it went to SpeedMod for over 40% i guess..
now i'm searching for a ROM i did search the Forum for a List of Roms threat and i've found it also..:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886000
My question is..
The thread above DOES NOT have a poll.. and i don't know which Rom is new and which one is on the top :S
Is there any poll thread in here???
It depends on what you want in a ROM I guess, everyone has different opinions.
DarkyROM 10.2.2 is a good ROM to start with which uses JVQ (2.3.4). I was using this for a while before I started to make my own ROM. DarkyROM also comes with the DarkCore Kernel.
So far my custom ROM uses JVT (2.3.5) and Semaphore Kernel 1.8.1, I'll be releasing it soon.
the best way to see which one you like is to try several of them which you think you might like and choose one after, all opinions here are objective... everyone has different expectations from their phone...

there are two things important in the life of US's Android user:
1. KIRNEL;
2. POLL
with the point 2, I'm pretty comfortable to recognise what you mean, looking on the US economy, government and peaceful behaving around the world. But... WTF is KIRNEL????
I'd recommend darky's 10.2.2!!! just installed it on my friend's phone, and I LOVE IT more than my sgs4g hahaha. What a great rom. Although, it's the first custom rom I've ever come across (there are none for my phone, well, not GB ones).

so... you recommend the very first custom rom you ever flashed on a sgs without experiencing some other... alternatives?

Let me elaborate,
Darky's 10.2.2 was my first custom rom, I just flashed it today. I have not had any other experiences with other custom roms, in fact, this i9000 was given to me just to upgrade to Gingerbread. So I chose Darky's because of the good comments and the features it had (like BLN, support for i9000t, etc).
I can then, confirm, that this ROM succeeded my expectations, and works like a charm. The device is now faster than my galaxy S 4g, and battery life appears to be good enough. So, I would recommend you at least try this ROM, because it's confirmed to be working as it should!
I should mention however, that there might be a better suited ROM for you out there.
I had no problems flashing this. It's really easy, but you might need to flash 2 roms, one using odin (darky's 10.2 RE) and then the extreme edition using CWM. This might sound like a hassle, but I was done in less than 30min. Easy to install and looks great.
No issues.
Good luck!
CM7. Hands down.
trust me...i have galnet miui on my phone with tkglitch kernel...the best combination ever i tried
however, all CM7 based rom are great
I'm a complete noob, so sorry if this is a dumb question. I have spent countless hours reading up on how to do all this stuff the last week but I haven't seen this addressed. I searched before posting, but couldn't find the answer. Will I lose root if flashing to ICS, and if so is there a method to get root again?
I've read that you are able to get root using CWM with 2.3.5. Will that be an option in ICS? Again sorry for the noob question, thanks.
As far as I know, almost all of the ICS Roms out there for Captivate are already rooted so you don't need to do it. Like the one from the CyanogenMod Team, which I'm using right now, is rooted. I'm guessing all the other ICS Roms too.
Sent from my Captivate
That's good to hear! My head is swimming in it right now, so that is one less thing. Thanks a ton for the reply!
All custom roms are rooted. Why would a dev go through the trouble of building a Rom and not have it rooted?
I didn't realize that but it makes sense. Like I said I am completely new to this. I knew that root was lost going from froyo to even the unofficial gingerbread, so is the difference there that the 2.3 was a leak and exactly the same as the official?
yes... leaks are stock firmwares untouched by devs. we take that firmware, add several tweaks (root, zipalign, deodex, extended power menu, locks..ect) and theme it up and that is a rom.
I am enjoying learning all this so thanks for the response, it helps me put it all together in my head.
This, for me, is one of the main reason of using custom roms... pre-rooted and customized with all the bloat removed...
Devs on these boards have spent a good deal of their time making the process painless so people like you and I can enjoy these Android Devices like they truly were meant to be. Free of restrictions from telcos and OEMs...
Don't forget to thank the devs if you decide to use their roms... ^_^
Good luck.
I require some help to choose a custom rom for my phone, so I wanted ask anybody about your experiences with roms.
The reason is that I really lost oversight over the amount of roms. I currently installed arragis cusmoized vanir rom and while it has more features than I can remeber to make use of, I wonder what other roms offer.
I mean it would be awesome to know whether other roms are stable and useful for everyday use. So far, I can confirm that with vanir rom, everything runs good and smooth, the phone sleeps good enough and much longer sleep time than on Stable CM release 10.2, the Voice search also works and the camera is from 4.3 and there is transparency for status bar.(Finally! I always wanted that).
I really want to know if there are roms out there better than my current one. However,I am reluctant to try them all out because I am weary of flashing and reflashing 500x times and risking losing my IMEI, which then would cause me to spend even more time. So please, any successful rom user out there, please tell me your experience.
