is there a trick to force the phone to get an hi-speed connection ,instead of E ?
Of course, where the hi-speed connection is present...
The problem is that there are too much cellphones or wireless pc connected on ...
and is very difficult in same places to get good connection continuously...
I am from Italy TIM..

hmm.. i too face that issue sometimes when range is low. but mine keep changing between E, H+ and 3G. What is H+? is it faster than 3g or slower?
do not know ,but for me H and 3g are very good web connection
"E" connection is terrible...i remember 56k modem....
Goes like this, high to low
LTE>H+>H>3G>E

In general, your device should be connecting at the highest possible speed. If you are getting Edge, it's probably because your phone can't pick up a 3G signal.

Try settings-wireless -mobile networks-network mode and choose wcdma only.

This should work if the area does have a connection higher than 3G, I found this out when I was testing the pre-paid mobile internet connection from my provider and oddly enough it almost always prefer to connect to 3G till I forced WCDMA only and it connects to H just fine getting only about 260kb/s though.

guys,
i just transferred from orange to o2. i have no 3g now?? i used networ wizrad and got the settings from o2 but still no joy
i have HK official wwe rom and there is no 3g option in comm manager either
can anyone help?
did you try running connections setup? or adding the 3g to comm manager with tf3d config to see if it is on?
yes i ran connections setup and o2 sent me the config.
i cant fiund the wsay to add 3g to comm manager in td3 flo adv??
yes 3g is enabled, just doesnt work or never active even in good signal areas, nothing! i either have H or E next to my reception

H? Oh dear... does someone wana tell him :/
I've been curious about this too. O2 doesn't have a 3G license, which is why they used the Jap technology i-mode (which as we know flopped). So where is the iPhone's 3G coming from? I think it's from '3', but I'm not 100%. So if you're not in a '3' coverage area I would guess this is why you don't reception on this band.

LOL (H) = HSPDA
HSPDA=7.5Mbps Approx making it a shed load faster than 3G
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/s. Further speed increases are available with HSPA+, which provides speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s downlink.

im sorry, i LOL'd when i read that.
I didn't even notice the H in his post LOL. Strange how he either gets GPRS or HSDPA though, and never any 3G.
yes this is strange - well at least it explains it. i put my 3 sim in and i get 3g straight away, oh well i can connect to internet anyhow so.... all is good
thanks for help guys
My carrier has bad 3G operation, whilst HSDPA works fine. The problem is that phone sometimes switches between 3G and H, and when it does switch to 3G, there is no internet until it swithes back to H or down to E. I'm almost sure that this is caused by carrier, and I can't fix it with firmware. So I would like my Tab to avoid 3G mode at all, while using H and E. Can I set it to do so?

Unfortunately, it's impossible, you can either choose "H" & "3G" with wcdma/umts or "G" & "E" with GSM in Mobile Networks. You can't choose to leave out 3G when it's doing H, cause both of them are under wcdma mode.
Of cause, if you leave your "Network mode" to auto, it will jump around gsm and wcdma when it see fit. By choosing it to run GSM mode only, will keep your network connect to "E"/"G(gprs)" ONLY; Or WCDMA for "H"/"3G" ONLY.

I have already disabled fast dormancy using *#9900# code in my Note, but now my phone switch between H and H+ icon. When connection is idel, it falls back to H. If I browse a webpage, it takes more than 10 seconds to connect to H+. And yes, H has no data trafic avalable. That means I have to wait the phone to change to H+ if I want to browse the internet.
Does anyone know how to stay with H+ icon?
OMG no one knows?
I think it depends on your rom..

It depends on your Network and rom + modem u using.
Post the details here and lets see what the community here can find.
Data works fine on H. It certainly seems faster on H+, but, as you say, the phone spends so long finding and connecting, the speed is wasted. I'd be happy to stay on H myself.
I agree, it would be nice to keep to one. My connection jumps from 3g to H to H+ and even to E, especially when moving on a train.
I think it is network dependent
E - Edge 2G
H - 3G
H+ - 3.5G
When you set your network mode to auto, it searches for faster avaiable network. If you set it to only WCDMA, you won't get E, but i think there is no setting to select 3G/3.5G.
Another problem to select WCDMA is, whenever any place dont have 3G coverage, your network will lost.
In germany it is also other:
G - gprs up to 56kpbs
E - edge up to 128kbps
3G - umts up 384 kbps
H - HSPA up to 14 mbps
H+ - extended hspa up to 21mbps
But H+ is only active when it is needed and it is all carrierer depending. If i am on H+ i can se my battery dying
Gesendet von meinem GT-N7000 mit Tapatalk
It is network related there's nothing your phone can do about it.
H+ is actually using the 64QAM modulation over the air interface which gives you 50% more throughput ideally than H.
3G is up to 384kbps
H is up to 14.4Mbps (16QAM)
H+ is up to 21Mbps
The above is the throughput on the lower levels, so at the application level you will get around 10% less (and that's if you are alone using the base station and your carrier is not limiting your throughput)
Everything that goes through wireless interfaces has to be shared between users. Therefore, the network has to manage valuable and limited resources to serve everyone and provide a best effort service. In order to do that, idle users or users below a certain threshold will be down switched from H+ to H (this usually happens due to radio signal conditions) and to 3G. After that it kicks you back to idle mode, so even if it says H, your actually not connected until a new session is triggered and based on your needs and availability, you are up switched to a faster channel.
Depending on each country and their marketing:
2G
2.5G is GPRS (G)
2.75G is EDGE (E)
3G
3.5G is HSPA (H)
3.9G (4G in the US) is HSPA+
4G is LTE
Fast dormancy is a new feature on 3G networks (not available in most networks yet) that improves your switching between different channels (H+, H, 3G, idle, ....) and it has a major impact on your battery life and the speed of establishing a new data connection once you are idle. This is also controlled by your network. Anyway, some people believe that turning it off while it is not supported by your network can help improving battery life. Which I don't think is true, since by turning it off you are forcing your mobile to ignore this new feature (and if it doesn't exist there's nothing to ignore anyway) and turning it off shouldn't have any effect unless it is active on the network and your carrier is not managing it correctly.

There is a short code for turning off h+ my phone would always time out when trying to connect to h+ so disabled it. And it works great now, can't for the life of me remember what the short code is though!

Is there a code to turn on H+ too? Because my phone used to show H+ but now it only shows H although I have not changed any settings.
Hi guys!
I just got my contract with mobile internet in it.
Each month, I get 1GB of data and it's awesome!
But I have some questions/problems with it.
When I connect to the 3G network, I sometimes have an E-connection.
It's pretty slow, but I found out this is some kind of 2G netwerk (called Edge).
Mostly I get an H-connection (HSPA(+)) I think and that speed is fine.
But sometimes it changes from a fraction of a second to a 3G-connection.
I think that is what I really need, but how can I "force" it to always go to 3G?
My carrier supports Dual carrier 3G, so that "should" double my 3G speed.
It would be awesome if you could help/inform me!

H (HSDPA or HSPA) is faster than 3G is faster than 2G.
I also get switching from 3G to H a lot at home were signal is not good.

Hi,
I have patchy 3g but a good 2g signal when at home. The problem I have is my Z1 keeps flipping between the bad 3g and the good 2g.
When I'm at home I would like it to be forced to use the good 2g signal only so I would like it if the phone worked from 2g only when it recognises my home wifi.
My original thought was tasker but when I tried it, the radio section is not available, saying not compatible with this device.
Anyone know what else I could use ?
Thanks,
malty

When connected to wifi, doesn't the phone just turn off all mobile data? Mine doesn't show 2g or 3g or any indication of any mobile data being active when on wifi. Unless I'm missing something?

It's not data that's the problem. for calls and texts it is still connected to either a 2g or 3g mast. I need it to be looking for and connecting to a 2g mast only, since the 3g mast where I live is poor signal and is intermittent but since the phone would prefer a 3g over a 2g signal, it tries to connect to it anyway.
As stated I would like it to be in GSM (2G) only mode when I'm at home and automatically switch to 3g(preferred) and 2g when away from home.
Hi,
I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for but you could try installing this ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463675
It's listed to have a force 2g option and you might be able to find a way to automatically trigger it.
I also found a Radio Switcher app in the Play Store, but again, not perfect.
Hope this helps.
Andrew
As far as I know, you can't have automated 3g to 2g switching even with a rooted device because android prohibits it.

tasker will do it but the radio section in tasker is greyed out with the explanation 'not available for this device'
From what I've read changing network settings is protected by Android, and thus not possible if running a rooted stock-rom.
If someone comes up with an idea how to rescan/update the settings without a reboot that works (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230207), please tell as I also have horribly bad coverage of >3G at home.
