stock gingerbread worth it or no? - LG Thrill 4G

battery life is worse than froyo?
no rootable.
what is buggy?

Well i think the battery life is better with gingerbread.
There are some some European and brazilian gingerbreads that are rootable.
I havent had any buggs i can report but some ppl on those other one have had droped calls and missed sms's.
Just read around the forum all thie info you looking for is out there.

it seems mixed.

doesn't sound like its worth it. I like the gingerbread theme much better, but if it has problems then it doesn't sound like an upgrade.

What are the advantages to flashing one of the new up and coming Gingerbread Roms over staying on one of the many stable Froyo Roms that are currently available ?

Haven't noticed any cons unless you consider amazing battery life one. Also the performance on my phone has never been better no lag anywhere.
Try it you wont regret.
Here is a link that explains some improvements with GB...

Samsung added some new improvements to touchwiz I believe as well as some other tweaks.

Thanks for the responses so far. And hopefully more will come, specifically from those who are running a new gingerbread rom, as I have yet to jump onto the ginger-train...but I'm sure I will soon.
You know how people will have what they think is a crappy old computer, but then a good tech guy gets rid of all of the viruses and updates the software and it runs so much better and they'll exclaim, "It's just like a new computer!"
Well, that's what Gingerbread feels like. The smoothness and the battery life make me feel like I have a dual core processor in there!
ginger bread pros:
optimisations that vastly improve the performance of the hummingbird
brighter screen
better color balance
no lag
better battery life stock vs stock
better browser
better market
better video player
new, shiny, better,
cons:
problem with proximity sensor on samsung release
framework doesnt allow the haptic feedback to work on captivate home button yet
some kernel mods havent been ported yet
2.2 pros:
lots of roms
lots of development
lots of kernels
roms available with amazing battery life do to mods
cons:
slower
laggier

I'm sure he means, that by the time 3.1 (Or really ICS, 'cause HC isn't going to be opensourced) has been turned into a CM release, LG might release GB
When they realese it then CM8 would come with Ice Cream Sandwich!
I am just joking.

Wrong section - stop replying people, thread needs to die.
Why is there yet another thread about this???
We all know it was delayed, and I think more and more people know it won't come at all.
I got 2 email replies from LG. The first one said the update will come after summer for sure. The second one said there is no precise date for the update, not even after summer.
So to sum up:
n°1 LG is telling us all to go **** ourselves on this one
n°2 It's useless to open a new thread every time LG tells us to go **** ourselves
n°3 LG is ****ing ****
Froyo -> Gingerbread upgrade is not all that big. Most of you won't even know its running gingerbread vs froyo. Not sure what the big deal is.
its not about the software update, we have CM7 for that.
Its about the kernel update that we want from gingerbread.
And also, are you kidding? "most of you want know the difference" ? where do you think you are? this is XDA why do you think where here?

Pretty sure most of the people *****ing about it want it for the sake of having the number "2.3" written on the version screen as oppose to "2.2.2". What will gingerbread let you do that you can't do now?
If you're having issues with the phone (reboots/freezes etc) then fair enough otherwise just chill. It's just a phone.
I had a HTC Legend before Optimus 2X. And when the stable cm7 rom was running in my phone it was WAY faster then with any stable custom Froyo-rom. And 2.3 looks very nice. 2.3 also has the Screen-off animation, and a function to select text in messages and on webpages to easier copy, edit or delete parts.
Thats what I can remember I miss atm..

I almost agree.... cm7 rocks and no point at all using standard rom however the battery aint so bad is it? I manage live wallpaper, fair usage on wifi, 3g and 3 hours a day audiobook ( yes works tough going lol )baseband/rij 725 and she lasts a day no problem ........ if you think thats bad you should try my wifes iphone 3gs!!!
edit:- lcd brightness is also up full tilt
edit again.... why doesnt lg/htc/etc etc hire the cm devs? as far as im aware they dont get paid much if anything other than the odd donation and a new phone here and there for a hell of a lot of work.... surely if anyone should be doing the official roms its people like them who love their work?

Official-Unofficial XT860 Dedicated Thread

Honestly, I'm not sure what all the *****in' for an XT860 forum is all about. Do we really need a lot of space to discuss all the dev that doesn't work on our phones? I'm sure one thread is enough. That way, maybe all the d3 users can get some peace from us constantly asking about compatibility.
Maybe, as a public service, all the d3 devs could stop in here after they've produced the next great ROM, and just let us know (without laughing) that NO, this will NOT work with your phone.
Ah...I feel better now.

...it just gets frustrating. The D3, if you include the leaked 5.7.894, is now two updates ahead of us...and we're stuck on what...er...windows 3.1?
There's also a level of frustration with myself. After all, with alternate launchers, UOT kitchen, root, debloating, its not like its a bad phone..I guess I just have the patience level of the average 3 year old.
Just to be clear, once we get an update then someone can get an sbf from that? Or am I totally out to lunch...remember, I'm the guy who has a flashing clock on his vcr. VCR....video cassette recorder? Never mind kiddies.

It still has some major glitches in my opinion that Motorola should have already fixed for us. I asked bell and was told the updates come from the manufacturer. I'm still waiting to hear back from Motorola, despite the 24 hour for a response auto reply I got. While ROMs would be nice, the cell standby, slow camera and buggy keyboard are all issues that Motorola should have addressed already imho

Weird bug I just noticed... I did that and changed to French, back to English, then to Spanish, then to English and I noticed that my message icon for my Exchange account changed colours...
Yeah my gf has the XT860 and she's not very happy with it. Part of that is because it's more complicated than her 3GS, but part of that is also because there are a number of bugs and it's laggy at times. Tons of bloatware.
At least if we had some way of loading our own ROMs I could fix some of that for her.
I know that my stock AT&T Captivate was a piece of crap. It wasn't until I installed Cyanogen Mod that I had something useful.

Sincerely, Latasha Customer By Web Form (Marc Laferriere) 11/06/2011 07:40 PM I am the owner of a XT860 4G, which i am beginning to regret. The phone has numerous issues and bugs, which i'm sure Motorola is aware of, as pretty much all of these issues were fixed in the recent update to the XT862 (5.6.890). I have previously contacted Morotola about this and was told that there currently is no update and there is no information pertaining to one. Now i see that there is yet another update coming for the XT862(an unofficial leak, however that means that one will be released soon) yet still nothing for the XT860. The lack of support for this device is offensive to me. When i purchase a device i expect that it will be supported for at least a few years. As it stands i would not purchase nor recommend Motorola products. So again i ask, is an update for the XT860 forthcoming, or should i be looking for a device that will actually see some support.
Thanking you in advance Marc

Great post, Endoroid. As doom and gloom as the lettter appears, its still possible that the letter is simply holding to company policy of not releasing info until its ready to be released. That's what I'm gonna tell myself anyway.
Its been said before somewhere, but I'll re-iterate, never ever buy a country specific phone like this...unless you are happy with the stock experience.

I'm out of country the next week but when I return I plan on also contacting bell and escalating with Motorola. I have been into a bell store but the sales reps are pretty useless for this.
I mean honestly, given the similarities between the 2 phones I don't understand why we wouldn't receive updates around the same time as d3. It should be easy enough for Motorola to modify the update to apply to our device
Grrrr

Yeah yeah, Rub it in lol.
Well sad news for the Bell users for sure.
Huh, we don't even recovery to get back to stock if things go wrong.
I heard Motorola issues updates based on phone popularity/user base. If this is true, it will be awhile before we see any updates. XT860 has the same bugs, if not even more like D3 with original release firmware. D3 is now getting second OTA while we have not even heard about first one to address these obvious bugs. If we look back at Milestone 2, to compare to Droid 2 Global which took 8 months to get GB upgrade, M2 has not yet received it.
Things don't look good with XT860 in this aspect for sure.
Lets hope Motorola will prove me wrong!

Stability maybe? I mean not even with your wounderful kernel and tweaks its become stable. One wants to be able to answer the phone without it locks up/powers off/TERMINATE CALLS/whatever. It gets better for every version, but never good. I think the hardware is flawed, for everyone. The designer probably got fired. I have, however, not done the switch to 20Q yet, because I don't think it'll help. I am trying CM right now, but that's even ****tier, can't understand why people like it. Sure, for apps and ram eating it's better, but it is terminating calls about 50% the time. I've tried so many ril/bb combinations that i've just lost interest.
Very nice looking phone the Xperia S.
Great Camera
REALLY nice screen
ICS very soon (if not at launch, can't remember)
1GB RAM
but, strangely only an Adreno 220 gpu in it.

Yes thats absolutely right, I'm not taking LG's side but still may be it's me only but I have deep trust in Official ICS release of LG and regarding ICS sources they'd release. One must agree that LG seems now a days improved in SW update and bug fixes since V20 series and especially v20q is the most stable version LG has ever released. And late but sure they're working for monthly updates faster. Difference in previous LG SW update and bug fix with now has been much improved atleast they've realized and they're working on it. The good thing is that they're trying no matter for reduced sale due to lack of support or whatever.
I dont use CM so i am not aware about it bugs etc. But since froyo to v20q journey they've surprisingly progress faster although late as against other companies. Samsung or anyother companies do not provide so many beta leaks like LG has. One good thing is that atleast late but they're trying

Insight on the Thrill

hey guys, I was hoping to get some help from some thrill users. I'm hoping I can get a little honesty here, I am doing research for a buddy on the thrill. I have checked out specs, and spec wise seems like a nice device. I just wanted some insight on state of this device, whether its a good purchase or not, i have found some nice deals on this device bare in mind im buying full price so i want to have a device that will have a little bit of longevity. here are some things i hope you guys can share some insight on:
reliability of device, hardware/software
development does it look good will there be ICS i didnt notice ics roms
any alarming things to know about the device before buying
known issues
i ask all this because the G2x for tmobile seems to be a nightmare, hoping this is a better device thanks for any help you guys can provide
I'm pretty happy with my Thrill, but I was disappointed in how long it took to get GB out for it. I'm not sure if we will ever see ICS. The camera is excellent, battery life is ok (I bought a 3500mAh battery and have to charge up nightly). The 3D is kind of a gimmick, but it does work well.
I found that it's much snappier with a custom ROM. I'm currently using Lestatious AcidHazard from the dev forum here. Both ADW and GoLauncher are much better than the default "LG Home" launcher.
Overall, not bad for my first Android phone. I upgraded from an iPhone 3GS and will never look back at Apple, but for my next one I may consider Samsung or HTC just because there seems to be a much larger developer community for their offerings.
Ill give you only my opinion based on my experience with this device. Can't speak for anyone else but I'm sure there might be some very diverse opinions about this device.
I feel the Thrill is the underdog in the current Gen of high powered devices. Kinda like if you perchased a low cost car because the price and function fit your needs. Then you discover it had a turbine engine that simply needed to be switched on and calibrated properly. Would be cool and fun although very unlikely. However the Thrill is often referred to as a sleeper. The hardwear is all there but the stock Rom is restrictive. With some patience and proper modification the Thrill is an awesome phone that can outperform many high priced phones and then some.
In most cases from what I have seen many people find a baseband they like, and a rom that works with the baseband, a few tweeks and bam nirvana. Currently the most common issues that I'm aware of are Ghost calls, Bluetooth instability and minor app bugs. We don't have a huge Dev team but the devs we got are darn good and have flat out showed us all what the Thrill is supposed to be.
If you have loaded any roms or rooted a phone then you will be capable of tweaking the Thrill as you like in about 1 day at the most. Do some further research on it first before you dive in so you are fully aware of what your getting in to.
Hope that helps
Its fast as ****. Its nice to the eyes, it sounds good while making calls for me at least.
What else do you need?
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA
coming from the HTC sensation the 3d agreed is fun to play with but a gimic super fast and honestly if the right tweeks were given then the phone would be right behind the sgs2 easily if not keep up the LG 3d Max launcher is what I'm using but it is slower easy fix by getting a launcher from the market I recommend Adw or go launcher the dev work is amazing but slow and the optimus 3d is the exact same phone and is on the official list to receive ics according to popular results on Google but looking at things it'll be years end before we see official ics custom ROM will show up first and more than likely soon since the drop for LG phones supposedly is second and 3rd quarter once agin popular Google results reviled this for me over all I do not regret the switch and believe this phone Will peak at ics but will stay alive for probably another year to a year 1/2 stability is decent but be sure to update to gingerbread as the phone really seems to shine afterwards

I actually love this phone. It is really fast and the battery life is decent. The camera takes awesome pics and videos. About a month ago I was almost fed up with the phone and the dev on it but after flashing the Mokee ROM I fell in love with the Thrill all over again. If I had to choose a phone right I would pry choose the Note over this but then again most people would.

Pretty much the same situation for me. Also upgraded from a 3GS and I think this phone is awesome and a great first android for me. For the most stability on gingerbread, in my opinion, would be v21e. I flashed the promethius rom and kernel on top of it and my thrill is amazing.
