[Q] Power button - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The hardware power button on my captivate finally bit the dust. It just stopped working. This would be okay if I were rooted and could install the button remapper app, but its a non market app. I'm on stock firmware and I can't apply root because I'm unable use the power button to press okay to reinstall packages for root. No root means no remapped power button.
Is there anyway to either allow non market apps without root, or to be able to root without going into recovery?
Edit: Looking for a solution that doesn't include replacing the power button
Edit2: If you lose your power button do not go into recovery and expect the search key you remapped into a power button to work. I finally got superoneclick to root and Sideload Wonder Machine to install the button remapper apk but I'm stuck on stock unless the power button is replaced. What an adventure.

Can you share what you PM'd? My wife also has a faulty power button but is rooted I remapped power to the volume button but it's sort of flaky.
Thanks Roger

why the 'secret' pm's? It doesn't help anyone else searching that way.
basic outline of on stock / bad power button
enable usb debug
adb reboot download, or DL jig
use heimdall or odin to flash a cwm kernel ( I use CornKernel )
reboot
adb reboot recovery (can do this 1st if you already have cwm)
vol key to mount usb storage - one of your capacitive keys will be enter
copy rom into sdcard
unmount and flash via zip on sdcard option per rom instructions
like I said, basic details how to do it, for details - is posted elsewhere and there may even be a simpler app option out there. This just works for me on my captivate that has no power button at all - I removed it.
worst case is having to redo stock / kernel flash if boot loops prevent recovery mode option.

We are pming where he can send his phone to get the button replaced, links to outside services are against the rules.

Studacris thanks for replying but I was able to fix it without sending it out for service. In another thread someone recommended cleaning the button with CRC QD Electronic Cleaner and that did the trick. I had to clean it several times but its working now, I just removed the back of the phone and sprayed it I did not completely disassemble the phone.
@dashingport
Here is the link make sure to use "CRC QD Electronic Cleaner" it made for electronics. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20910029&postcount=17

ahh, thanks for the clarification

Okay so, is there a chance to remap the volume button to work as the power button? I have one in here with that same problem and if the phone turns off i have to flash it again so that it will boot up... I know i can use it as a wake button but what if the phone is off? Is there any chance... Oh! And by the way the power button solder points are damaged. So i cant solder a new button to fix this...

Wait a few seconds after turning it off.. Because the unit doesn't shut off immediately after the screen and lights turn off, and that can make it iffy getting into download mode..

1. for fast solution, return the phone to the store
2. if you can wait, samsung said it'll release a fix later on in september possibly the same time with Froyo2.2

returning it to the store is the best solution.
no one can confirm if samsung will actually release a fix, but it's expected as they are aware of the problem.

Personally, I've been able to make it into download mode, but not recovery mode. I'm 80% sure I need recovery mode for my root, could I be wrong? And forgive me if these are the same thing, but I don't think they are. I think there is a way to root with the download mode, but the translation for it sucks and I seem to be missing files AFAI can see.
There is a way to get into recovery mode without the 3-button access. I had to go through the same thing with my Bell phone. You need to download the android standard development kit (SDK) and possibly samsung usb drivers. With this from command prompt you can force your phone into recovery/download mode. Here are a few helpful links:
[New member, need to be approved before I can post links. I'll PM them to you if I can and update my post whenever I receive approval.]
I also really recommend you put your SDK right in the C: directory as it simplifies cmd commands. Also make sure to update the SDK when you download it, it's going to want to do it anyways. The above articles aren't very clear if you aren't familiar with cmd commands so I'll quickly explain it. If you put the SDK folder in your C: directory (no subfolders like my documents for example) then you need to get into it by typing " cd \sdk\tools " (at the command prompt screen) before issuing the following commands as described in the video and articles. Hope this helps.
Using the SDK will only really help if your phone's not bricked. If it is, 3 finger recovery is the only real way to help get you back on your feet.
HI all
i tried to return it to the store
but they said it's not a hardware problem
and it is not a necessary for user.
they didn't change it for me.
what can i do
and i found a way to root it..
if i want to fresh the rom without download mode.
what can i do?
I had the same problem entering into Emergency Mode or Recovery mode. I used this trick. Press Home buttton then without releasing Home press and hold at the same time Volume Up button and Power Button and when you see the Galaxy logo for 1 second release the two side buttons Volume and Power but still hold Home for 2 or more seconds till you see Android system recovery mode loading.

[Q] newbie questions

I have an SGS with
BB:
I9OOOXXJPP
Kernal
2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
Build
Froyo.XXJPO
I am trying to install darkys rom V7 which looks pretty promising.
I have found out I need to install a kernal which has 2e recovery to which I found out I need to use the 3 button download mode?
I have tried every combination of button presses to get this working and nothing works
How do I enable the download mode? I Cannot find any answers in any posts just questions and more confusing jargon with no real explanations
any help would be appreciated
Karl
Some SGS sets have their 3-button recovery / downlaod modes DISABLED by the manufacturer. IMO the carriers ask the manufacturer to do so for them because carriers don't want us to install / flash new ROMs.
You need to modify the secondry bootloader of your SGS, if you want to permanently enable your 3-button recovery / downlaod mode.
To change the secondry bootloader of your phone, you need to put your phone into download mode, use Odin to flash the modified bootloader and you are done.
You will wonder how to put your phone into download mode when your 3-button recovery is not working !!
The solution to this problem is by using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). It is a piece of software which communicates with your phone at low level and can force the phone to boot in Download mode.
Well this is the overview what you need to do. For a step by step guide, you can search here or pm me. I can send you links on how to do it.
I have tried every combination of button presses to get this working and nothing works
Hold down Home button that's the middle button + Hold down volume down button that's the bottom end not top .With these buttons held down press and hold the power on button until the Samsung logo appears .
Release Home Volume then Power button .
If you do not now get the yellow download mode icon you do not have download recovery .

Help, choose wrong phone for ROM Manger and now stuck in Android Recovery Mode

Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?

[How-To] Enter Safe Mode

I don't know if this is already known, but didnt find anything on this.
I just managed to get into safe mode under v20N. First I didnt know how, but n´now I think I know:
Enable Debugging Mode
Take out SIM and battery
G-Key + Power
so all buttons to be short
Then plug in USB cable and hold buttons, until it's fully booted.
Then you should see Safe mode in the left lower corner
Don't know if it's usfull, but if any1 needs it, u can find it here
It also works with SIM AND akku inserted and without the USB cable
-edit-
Had to edit some things, since I was simply pushing all buttons, but G + Power until booting is finished is fine. Xantaro is the first who niticed this, so THANKS!
interesting, but what can this SAFE MODE do ?
I dont know, but maybe someone finds anything interesting for him/her... I just posted it, because I just found it out and didnt know if it's usefull to any1 Wanted to bring light to ur darkness
You can also enter Safemode by holding the G-Button while booting. (You have to Hold it until the Homescreen is loaded.).
Safemode boots the Phone without starting any Apps from /data afaik. Could be helpfull when a installed app prevents successful booting.
Safemode was accesible in older Rom Versions also.
Alright, didnt know that... but i was playing around in order to find recovery or root possibility and thats where i found it
Sent from my LG-P970 using Tapatalk
You could try this in safe mode
adb push zergRush /data/local/zergRush
adb shell "/data/local/zergRush"
or from a terminal emulator on the phone /data/local/zergRush
https://github.com/downloads/revolutionary/zergRush/zergRush.zip
adb shell and terminal tell me permission denied...
And pls post such things to root thread
I already discovered this with v20N, I came here to share but it was already here hehe.
No need for usb debug or volume up down etc.
Just power on and keep pressed G button.
Then at the LG logo the phone will vibrate.
Release G button and you will be in safe mode, only stock apps will be loaded.

Captivate home key not working

Hey guys,
My friend asked me to flash his phone cause he thought it was messed... but after flashing a few roms i think the phone is just buggered...
the home key for some reason activates the search key.
i used the remapping app to make the search key the home key which makes the phone usable..
are the capacitative buttons just screwed or would a restore back to stock fix it?
i've been trying to get into download mode but the damn thing just won't do it.. i just get CWM recovery or at&t splash logo's constantly...
anyone with any advice?
Use a jig to force the DL mode.
A flash to stock may help. Pull the battery and the SD card, put the battery back in, hold both volume buttons, and plug the USB cable in (don't touch the power button). You should go into download mode.
If that doesn't work, try just the volume down button and press the power button.
If that doesn't work, a jig is in your future.
[Edit] Which bootloaders are you on eclair/froyo, i9000 gb, or i897? To get to download mode on i9000 gb bootloaders you need to hold volume down button and the power button. For the others hold both volume buttons and then plug in the usb
^^That's not correct.... I9000 bootloaders are:
Vol down and power = download
Vol up and power = recovery
Op...are you sure you're using a kernel and ROM built for the captivate? Cause using a straight up I9000 kernel/ROM on a captivate will do that...is autorotation 90° off?

Oops on thx. ...which stock firmware did u flash ?? i9000 or i897 & which firmware ??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
my capacitive started going erratic a while ago and I fixed it with a simple cleaning as follows:
removed screen protector.
used a toothpick and fingernail to clean the very small seam between the case and the bottom of the screen and along the sides. then I took a microfiber screen cleaner cloth and firmly, pressed a corner of the cloth into the seam and dragged it along the seam. the cleaning removed a little bit of greasy/oily debris that had been in the bottom seam.
then wiped the entire screen clean with microfiber cleaning cloth and installed a new screen protector.
no problems since then.
It doesn't take too much debris to change the location of the capacitance from your finger or your stylus.
