I have read some other sources saying that there is no way to turn off the shutter sound when taking pic with my Note (i am not going to root my baby). Can anybody confirm or advise a solution. Thx!

AFAIK you can only do it by rooting (and why wouldn't you want to?), and delete /system/media/audio/ui/Shutter_01.ogg or add in a quieter, less obnoxious sound.
I am running LB1 PowerTweaked, which thankfully has a quieter AutoFocus sound, because that is the one Camera sound that is not in the /system/media/audio/ui directory. I renamed Shutter_01.ogg to Shutter_01.ogg.bak, and did the same to Cam_Start.ogg and Cam_Stop.ogg. Blissful quiet!

thanks! it seems that the only way is to root....
sorry for positing in the wrong forum.
The manual workaround method for the odd shots you need stealth for would be to switch the Note to silent mode before using the camera.

That's a shame
There might be differences in firmware versions as although I do have root access, I'm using stock LB1 firmware released for Germany (one of the latest official firmwares). Turning my sound mode to silent completely switches off all the camera sounds, even the autofocus sound.

Is there a way to remove the shutter sound the camera makes when taking photos or video regardless of the rom? Can I just use root explorer and find the audio files and delete them? If this is possible, where are the audio files and what are their names?
There was a modified camera.apk posted, but it didn't work with latest firmware so I didn't really used it.
Most of the camera sounds are files located at /system/media/audio/ui.
However, the shutter sound in embedded in the camera.apk itself. Maybe it can be done using and apk editor, but I'm no programmer, so I have no clue to get it working.
Please follow the steps to disable it!
1. Please make sure the Galaxy Note is rooted.
2. Use root explorer(or any other similar apps like it).
3. Start the Root Explorer and browse the file “/system/media/audio/ui”
4. Click on the “Mount Button” in Root Explorer.
5. Rename “Shutter_01.ogg” to “Shutter_01.ogg.off” or Shutter_01.ogg.backup
6. Say goodbye to the camera shutter sound
keep device in silent mode..
ranjan.alva: Camera still use sound in silent mode.
I did the same thing like "neworder76" and this works!

Which Firmware u using?? i think you need to update your device to new Firmware.
This may be a later answer but here:
The camera shutter sound's volume is controlled by the MEDIA VOLUME.
The reason why it still goes off when you set the phone to silent mode is that Silent Mode only sets Notification and Ringer volume to 0, not media volume.
You'll have to adjust media volume in the settings yourself, as it stays up even in silent mode. If you're unsure, media volume is the volume for games or apps.
It's illegal to silence the camera shutter sound in some countries. Be wary of this.

LOL.
I know one: Japan! Can't silence the cameras on DSIs or 3DSs. =)) Never occurred to me that the people in this thread could be attempting that for `illegal` reasons.
Just so I can get out of any potential legal mess, I just discovered this while messing with my phone. I was actually looking for the sound.

That's so weird; none of the cameras I've owned have made any sound (they've been practically silent), but every phone I've owned has had a loud, artificial camera shutter sound. Do other countries require normally quiet cameras to add an artificial sound when taking pics?

It has to do something with preventing stalking and secretly taking photos.
All I have to do is turn the Volume down to nothing before I launch the camera app... I haven't done anything to mod it either, it's pretty much stock.
no camera artificial shutter sounds for me if the phone is on silent, and i am on an unrooted phone on 2.3.6. and no need for me to turn the media volume down. am i the only one?
Kind of reminds me back during "the space race"....NASA was all proud of itself
after spending (probably) millions of dollars to develop an ink pen that would write in zero gravity. Reporters asked a (then) Soviet (don't remember if it was an engineer or who) what they thought of this brilliant achievement by the Americans to develop an INK pen that works in zero gravity. The Soviet just shrugged and said...so, we just use pencil.
Same here...a somewhat simple idea of silencing the camera sound doesn't need to have a hack for the software, just turn down the speaker before launching the camera....BRILLIANT!
Confirmed. No camera sound with media volume 0. I'm using rooted stock ROM 2.3.6 KL3.
Thanks muchly for the tip!!!

Apple should be sued into oblivion then...switching the silent makes the camera silent worldwide.
Who cares anyway? If you are a creep trying to snap a shot of some chick's ass you will get caught eventually. Wish you luck with that.

i also on KL7, but it wont work for me. Any suggestion?
I didn't find any similar threads with this problem so I decided to start a new one.
The thing is, I just installed JellyBeans 4.1 Beta 1 and flashed my X8 with "E15i_JBMiniProject_v02" (Everything on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789713)
I also installed the Google apps in the thread like Google play.
So, the problem is that when plugging earphones into the device and then playing music or any audio app the sound goes both through the earphones and the speakers. I didn't find any separate volume options for speakers and earphones also when increasing or decreasing volume in the device, both speakers and earphones increase or decrease.
I looked carefully through the phone options and I didn't find any possible options. Note: I was kinda tired so I MIGHT have missed an option for this.
I tried searching for people wanting to force this to play both through speakers and earphones and I've only seen threads in developing forums, nothing as simple as an option I might miss-understood and turned it on.
NOTE: I also tried setting phone in vibration only mode and silent mode but still.
I know it's not the worst problem ever, but it's annoying because I can't use earphones without playing music via the speakers too...

Sorry I didn't see the comment on the thread, didn't mind searching since the thread owner mentioned not to talk about bug in the dev thread :S.
BTW I'm the one who submitted the bugreport lol.
EDIT: Yeah, I'm blind, just noticed the guy who posted the app that fixs it.
Thanks for the help .

I can't work out how to turn off the camera shutter sound. On my old One X I think that when it was on silent mode the camera shutter sound didn't go off, but in this phone even on silent it does and I can't find any option to turn it off. Does anybody know if it's possible?

In camera, tap menu (3 dot icon), go to "Shutter options" (towards the bottom) > Shutter sound > un-tick.
The shutter sound is a legal requirement in some countries (so you can't take sneaky photos). Some carriers remove the sound option from the camera settings.

Only noticed the OP is an Aussie. Then I confirm this is the case. In Australia, phones MUST have a shutter sound. Silly I know....but Telstra, Optus etc branded phones don't let you remove shutter sound. This is for most of their phones.
I'm in Australia on Optus and can confirm that in silent mode the shutter does not make a noise. My phone is stock, unrooted and obtained from Optus.
Furthermore I have also unticked the 'shutter sound on ' in the settings as it has been suggested already and that works also, no sound from the camera when the volume is on.

Yeah I thought this might have been the case. I have a Telstra One.. it's strange that the Optus version doesn't have it but Telstra does. Oh well just giving me more reason to root.
Under shutter options for me the only setting is touch to capture :/

Also on Telstra.
One XL on Telstra had shutter sound with ICS. After the OTA JB update, camera had no shutter sound in silent mode, without changing any settings.
One on Telstra definitely has shutter sound on all sound 'profiles', and the shutter sound option has been removed.
Maybe we'll be lucky and receive the silent shutter when we get the KLP update

ATT allows for shutter sound to be turned off.
This may well be ROM dependent, but I'm using TrickDroid 5.2.1 and when I put my phone on silent (toggle the sound through EQS) I get no shutter sound.
I've just noticed that the mic isn't working on my video recorder. I've tested it on memos and it works, but not when video recording. Maybe memos uses a different mic to record sound? I've tried to stick a pin in the mic hole to see if maybe Its dirt, but no change. I'm running the latest firmware and maximus 30.0... Anyone able to help? Thanks.
Could be a hardware problem. But if it had never happened before or from the very first time you have used the video function try flashing a different rom.

I have a video recording from a couple of days ago and Its working fine. I can only think that rain water has somehow got in and damged it :/. Ill flash a different rom and see what happens, fingers crossed lol
Did you ever figure out a fix for your issue? I've been having the same problem lately. I recorded a video today and the microphone volume was incredibly low and I could barely hear myself talking, even when I put the volume up to the max. It seems to only be an issue when taking a video because I tried a voice call, a speakerphone call, and a skype video call and each time the microphone was loud and clear. I have a video that I recorder about a month ago and it is plenty loud so it seems to be a new issue. I'm out of ideas...any thoughts?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. I'm running stock (not rooted). I tried rebooting and still have the same issue. There's no way to adjust the recording microphone volume in the camera app, correct? I wish I could figure out the issue. I suppose I could try rooting and installing a custom ROM, but I'm happy enough with stock. If you have any other suggestions, I'd very much appreciate it.

Hey, take a look at this thread below and see if this describes your problem. It's probably happening because audio is only being recorded from the left channel only. Bug since kitKat update and very annoying.

Yes! This must be my problem because I checked the video I recorded and I only hear sound on the left channel. Thanks for showing me that thread, I was afraid it was a problem with just my device. This bug needs to be fixed ASAP.
So, i have had many models of android and nowhere i had this issue with whatsapp camera shutter osund WHILE in silent mode except on Huawei phones....
is there ANY way YET to mute this stupid sound while on silent mode WITHOUT root? or still not... this is really getting frustrating
Ugh! I happily didn't know this, now I'm annoyed by it and I hadn't even used the WhatsApp camera before.
