[Q] HTC Vivid Signal loss - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Original Thread posted in wrong section:
Stats:
HTC Vivid AT&T
Android Version 2.3.4
HTC Sense Version 3.0
Software #1.63.502.4
Action taken:
Followed the Superguide to the letter, unlocked phone, rooted no issues. Every thing went according to the guide. I even removed CIQ with no issues. I did not flash a custom ROM because i'm still researching what is available. Since the Dev forum is very technical i have to do a lot of reading to understand what is the best method and software. I'm an Air traffic Controller and a quick study, so i make sure i'm very precise.
Result:
After completing the process i noticed that i have sever signal degradation. Prior to rooting i was picking up 5 full bars and 4G inside my house. Now i only pick up maybe one to two and Edge. My wife is picking up full power on her POS flip phone.
Trouble shooting actions taken:
Verified APN was correct and loaded an alternate configuration - Failed to resolve
Pulled and checked the sim card - Failed to resolve
Unable to find an App for checking my base band nor do i know what the original settings would have been. So following the Superguide step 6, i returned to stock. It was successful in reverting to Stock however i still have no signal strength.
If someone could please point me in the right direction to apply more troubleshooting techniques, of possabley have a solution. I have searched the entire vivid forums with no luck and the other post on this topic where for phone outside the US. Most had no resolution listed or where left unanswered. Please help, thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you have a Vivid (as opposed to an imported version like a Canadian Raider) and are on the at&t network?
A couple thoughts:
1. Have the device manually search for available networks (ensure AT&T is selected)
2. Ensure GSM, WCDMA & LTE are enabled.

in dialler, dial the following code:
*#*#4636#*#*
This should get you into the INFO mode. Click the first option, 'Phone Information'. There is a dropdown menu where you can select the network. Select "LTE Only". Now your phone should latch into the LTE mode...
If not, just wipe your user data and try again, i.ie. factory reset your phone (I dont really like doing this, but it worked the last time I got stuck in EDGE mode)

Follow up :
I went ahead and reverted back to GB by following thecubed's guide and it seems that I have better signal now, however it's still not exactly like it was before. I can get 2 bars constant inside the house and at work where previously it was full power. This weekend i might play around with it again and see if i can figure out what happened with the information that was provided in the previous two posts, thank you for that help.
I think i'll wait until i see something a little more definitive as far as guides. The SUPERGUIDE is awesome and works great. I tried to extrapolate what needs to be done with PG's ICS, but that information has been removed and there are a few holes in the information that I'm trying to piece together. I have files all over the place and what i need to do is delete all of them and put them in labeled folders to track what goes to what process. I can't stand disorder, yeah i'm OCD that's what makes me a good controller lol.
Thank you all for the help and if there is any more information please post it, knowledge is power and if this thread helps at least one other user than its a success. I appreciate all the developers work here on the forums, and being a community manager of a PC game hack development site, i know EXACTLY how you all feel with the abundance of repeat, irrational, and generally stupid questions you receive on a daily bases. Keep up the outstanding work

What exactly do you need help with? The process is not more difficult than loading a GB rom. I can help if you need instructions. I'm on AT&T btw running ICS flawlessly no bugs, no issues. But if you want to wait that's cool too.

Well all i really want is to root my Vivid and remove all the bloatware, and have full control over my phone and the option to back the entire thing up externally. I'm military so if my phone gets destroyed, i need to be able to bounce back quickly. These last few days have been nice because my phone isn't ringing all the time
I was an iPhone user (jailbroken), and i hate big companies telling me what i can and cannot do with a device i own and paid a lot of money for. I like to keep my gear on the cutting edge. I tried last night to install the ICS stock and rooted by pirateghost but since i jacked it up in the first place,(Clarification: followed the SUPERGUIDE first, which worked but gave me signal degradation, then tried PG's firmware) it was just sitting on the white HTC screen, so i reverted back to the GB as per thecube's guide. Now that i'm at the stock firmware, i may try again installing ICS later on this weekend when i have more time to devote.
If you have any tips or pointers that would be great, but i'm still learning the jargon here. I think i have it down, its just a lot of the steps in the other guides have implied tasks, meaning you should know how to get to that point. Its just a matter of me reading the forums more and trial and error. I can understand, when i train controllers sometimes i have to step back and turn on the "Barney" mod because they don't grasp the implied tasks.

I understand..I will give you the exact steps I used to root and flash and hopefully they will be more clear. If you are on ATT you can relock your bootloader and just execute the RUU with your PC to get ICS that is the easiest way. From there you can unlock the bootloader, root, flash recovery, or flash a custom ICS rom. I can give you details on the other way to install ICS but that has more steps. Again its not hard just need proper guidance and patience. If these details aren't good enough just ask and i'll try to be more clear.

Good thinking..

i would like that too i am on the ruu ics att version super detaled instructions would be great i am coming from a samsung infuse 4g and flashing custum roms is alot easier on it
what we need is a noob section that uses simple terminology for us noobs that dont fully understand htc talk

I don't have the link in front of me (on tapatalk) but someone posted a link this morning that the following command will prompt an AT&T Vivid to poll the network for the latest update:
*#*#682#*#*
I can't confirm as I have a non- ATT version, but several others confirmed success with screenshots.
Sent from the Matrix

strose09 that would be awesome if you could send that to me. I'll give it a whirl. And since I reverted back to GB it seems the signal issues are fixed. Its like it's slowly catching up, this morning when i posted, i had only two bars, now its three to four and 4G stays up instead of showing Edge. So its improving, i would have thought it was AT&T but my wife and kids phones are at full power.

Agreed, for me its just learning the Jargon, once i know what H-BOOT, ICS, GB, CWM ect are then i can follow the instructions. Mind you i know what they mean now because i read thru the forums and studied the instructions. What happens is most people want a magic pill or program to get what they want with little work on their part. I understand the developers' pain, i cant stand when i get a new member "my hack won't work, i don't know what to do" with no information on OS and what the problem is. And 99% of the time that topic was covered in 20+ other posts. My personal favorite is, "its detected i got banned and lost my pixels, sure i raged 3days on BF3 with 13k head shots but what difference does that make!?"

This works on the AT&T HTC Vivid, i think this is what sparked my phone to finally improve its signal.

This did start the system update on my AT&T HTC Vivid. I now have full power on my phone. It upgraded to 3.26.502.56 Right now i haven't installed it because "Murphy's Law" as soon as I do there will be a post "NOOO! Wait don't install it!!" I'll wait until I have more time to research the update and see if an issues it could cause with the root process.

I'll try to have some work instructions for you tonight. It wouldn't hurt to read posts from the superguide or anything from thecubed in the meantime and getting familiar with fastboot commands. Just to be clear jerrycoffman45, you have upgraded to ICS and just want root? If so, you'd just need to unlock the bootloader and flash the recovery of your choice.

[Q] I made an oops

Hi,
I know this has likely already been covered, but I'm overwhelmed with school and can't sacrifice anymore time to sitting and browsing through old threads right now.
Long story short, I was running CM6.0.1-RC1 (HTC Dream, Rogers, 32b) when my phone's microphone seemed to stop working. I could call people and receive calls but they could never hear me. Google voice search also wouldn't register any sound from the mic.
Fast forward a few hours and instead of just installing CM6.0, which had been running pretty much fine, I'm now on hboot 0.95 and radio 2.22.27.80 in an attempt to flash ezterry's 2.2
I've tried tubaking182's downgrade guide and all I get when I get to the rgb screen is "not allow"
Also, when trying to flash anything via SDK I get "Signature: verify fail" whenever I try to flash anything.
If there are any other details I can provide just say so. I would really appreciate some help as I haven't got a backup phone.

Help with sister's i9000

Hey guys, I don't have an i9000, my sister does. I'm here visiting for the weekend and would like to help her clear up as many issues as possible. Unfortunately time is of an issue, I'm wondering if I can just name the problems, and could anyone please link to solutions/explanations? Many thanks if so.
Here are the issues:
-laggy homescreen (stutters between swiping screens. I've heard there is an app that be installed that fixes this?)
-cannot connect to android market (on 3G, no wifi in the house. Error msg says "cannot establish a reliable data connection to the server. This should be a temporary problem, or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues call customer care")
-battery dies in 4-5 hours (maybe a faulty battery, but maybe a software issue?)
-device (and screen) gets hot after some use (could be normal, I have a wp7 that gets hot on the back)
Her version of Android is: 2.1 (although it says "2.1-update1", but does nothing when you try and press it)
She is on Bell in southern Ontario, and is on a standard data plan.
Again, any help would be so much appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.
Laggy screens are common on 2.1, there are lag fixes and kernel mods that fix this issue, I can't really give you much more info then that otherwise I'd then be talking out my ass since I'm no expert. You can look about here for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966646
Another way to reduce the lag is by flashing a new ROM custom or stock, I'm on a stock 2.3.3 ROM and there is virtually no lag, which also can help with the poor battery performance. Check out here for stock ROMs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810682 and here for custom ROMs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886000
Sorry no idea about the Market problems though, you could try the online market and see if you can push an app to your phone maybe? https://market.android.com/?pli=1, or just look about more on here or the Goog machine
Battery issues, start with all the basics turning stuff off, haptic feedback, GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi etc... only enable apps/services when you need them, also as I mentioned a new ROM could also help with poor battery performance.
The 2.1-update1 is a version, you cant update it by pressing the button (when I was new to Android I did the same ) to update follow the instructions in the threads I posted.
Best thing to do is carefully read over everything before you do anything though, you don't wanna end up with a soft brick specially if download and recovery arent working *had to learn that one the hard way*
2.1.1 is a primitive version.....move onto 2.3.3 GB.....regarding Market....go to Settings>Applicatinos>Select market in the list>clear data. Ensure that this phone actually is subscribed to a dataconnection plan with the service provider
Install kies on a computer and see if there is any firmware update available. You will need a certain combination of files if you want to update to gingerbread using odin as your sgs is an american firmware.

Personally i would update through Kies to latest official firmware . Wait until Gingerbread 2.3 is released before going down that road ..
If you get involved in flashing someone else's phone its either going to work or you brick the phone especially for a newbie and in a short timescale .
jje
If you decide to update via Kies, it sounds like a factory reset is in the need either before or after the flash. Preferably a reset before upgrade, and a reset after. Should clean things up a bit.

Thanks very much guys. I've never flashed a rom before, but I'll look into it to possibly do it next time.
In the meantime I've advised her to call bell about the market problem and battery.
Thanks again.

[Q] CyanogenMod 7 ROM for Samsung Captivate

I ran into this article yesterday, How to Flash CyanogenMod 7 ROM Samsung Captivate AT&T, and felt it was about time to learn about this. Plenty of you have already ROOTED your phones, and know from experience, what to do. But, I don't. Right now, I'm stuck with the options of accepting things don't work right, because of AT'T's unwillingness, or inabilility, to correct the issues I have, or reinsiall new, and lose all I've put on, or send back to Samsung for repair, and have them lose all I have on it, or try Rooting and adding a ROM, that may solve my issues. But to do that, I need a little help in understanding it.
First, if I try and run a program, like CyanogenMod 7, and it doesn't work correctly, snd screws up my phone, is there a way I can reinstall Android, and start over, or is that the proverbial kiss of death for my Captivate, and I'm stuck with it like that?
Second, is this the right ROM to try? AT&T can't fix my BLOCKS, of UNKNOWN APPS. The Settings change is easy, you click on activating Unknown, in Application settings..., unless you have no UNKNOWN, to choose. Also, in MMS settings, AT&T shows in a tutorial, that you have the option, of activating Delivery Report and Read Report. It shows this as plain as day, on that tutorial for the Captivate, yet mine, has NEITHER OF THOSE OPTIONS. Also, to TURN ON EDGE, the setting is missing, so I can't activate EDGE, which I guess is no big thing, since the towers AT&T has for us to connect with, THAT ARE 2G, are in such poor condition, no one can connect to them. Thank you, WIFI, for helping me get, ONLINE. Will this, or other ROM's, solve this for me?
If there are any suggestions of how to do this, and what to use, I'd appreciate hearing it from you. Again, I thank any effort, to help me.
1.cm 7 would not be the best rom to flash for your first time.
2. All roms are android, you are running at&t/samsung version of an android rom...
3. Yes you can get back to your stock rom if you don't like/something goes wrong (other than a bad bootloader flash)
4.all custom roms have all the blocking done by at&t removed so switching to 2g(edge) is possible and also faster 3g speeds known as hspa. And unknown sources is in the settings so you can install apps from outside the market.
5.the threads at the top of every section with a little thumb tacks are called stickies, give those a read through.
Like he said above. If you want the pretty much stock experience that your used to but want it fixed then I would suggest starting off with Cognition 4.4 or whatever it is now.
Sent from My KickAss Captivated CM7 OC'd 1.55Ghz/Undervolted
From newbie to a newbie, I took the advice of others and read threads for atleast a month before I flashed my first rom. My choice was Andromeda3, It has a written tutorial and a video on how to from start to finish. From what tools or apps you will need and how to use them , I watched that atleast 6 times and also while I was flashing the kernel and the rom. It may have been overkill but my flash was perfect and I'm real happy with my phone now. You may not go with the same rom I did but do your self a favor and do what I did to prepare for your first flash.

[Q] who updated the leaked 5.7.893?

Just wondering how many of you have updated the leaked 5.7.893 weather you were bone stock or rooted. Is it worth updating or should I wait for the OTA? I have no intention of rooting at this time.
Interesting to see who is going to wait and who took the plunge.
I'm rooted and rocking the 5.7.893 and loving my Bionic now. Pretty much fixed all my problems except the bluetooth skips, but I'm hoping the final OTA cures that.
Im rooted and at 5.7.893 love it.

If I were to update to 5.7.893 will I be able to get the final OTA whenever that comes around? I don't want to root so I just want to make sure that I will get the final OTA without having to do something other than accepting it.
I don't think anyone can be 100% certain that when the final OTA drops, we'll just be able to accept it and install. If we do have to take some steps to get it, I'm sure the fantastic bionic devs will figure them out. If you're having big problems, install it. If you're not, don't. For my Bionic the update was the best thing I could have done for it.

Listen to Bionicblue's advice. If you have problems that interfere with phone usage, either return it...or do the leak. If you do not, wait for the update path.
There is no assurance using the leak will be able to return to the update path without doing something. Generally updates are tied to some kind of stock. Sure, the awesome devs on XDA do get around to the updates and do wonderful jobs. So root and futurecooked roms will be an option.
But, if you can wait, wait. If you just gotta jump in...do it with a smile on your face...not that one...a real smile. I've been here going on 5years. Never once has there been a failure.
Stock 5.7.893 with webtop. still ocationally getting no network warnings but I think someone said that was a sim card problem and that a sim replacement fixes it.
I did

I did the three updated ending with 5.7.893 and i have to say i am starting to love my phone the way that i had hoped i would when i first got it. It's so much faster and more stable than before. And now i can enjoy having 4g. That's working so much better for me now.
Is anyone here having the dreaded no 3g connectivity issue? Just took the plunge and updated from 5.5.893 to 5.7.893 with webtop rocking Shift3r 2.3.1 ic3 blurry everything was last night now getting no 3g or icon stays white. 4g our blazing fast. Hopefully I can get a new Sim card and be fixed
I did the update from stock to 5.7.893 and love the change. Camera is wicked fast now and over the phone seems a lot more stable. I have the frequent data drops but I had that before the update (tried all of the recommended fixes with no real improvement).

I just started having this problem yesterday, too. I am on 5.7.893 stock rooted +webtop. 3G connects, sometimes, but never turns blue (what is that, getting an IP address or something?) so there is no connectivity. 4G works just fine.

At first I thought it was just a Verizon issue, but my daughter's LG Ally seems to be working just fine on the 3G.
Do you think they're blocking the new radio, perhaps? I would've thought more people would be reporting problems on this forum if that was the case.
I really don't think it's a SIM card issue, because the SIM card is for 4G. The CDMA radio inside the phone is what controls the 3G, to my knowledge.
I'm trying to restore back to Liberty 3 (based on 5.5.886) but obviously that will not downgrade my radio firmware, so I really don't know what that will fix. I will post back with results of that.
EDIT: Restoring back to Liberty 3 on 5.5.886 didn't work. Going to try stock fresh of 5.7.893 and see, but something tells me this is a Verizon issue with the Bionic. Luckily most of the VZW reps have Bionics so they should be reporting the problem.

I talked to a Verizon rep and she said all LTE phones have the connectivity problems and have been slow fixed and that it is a software issue and not the SIM or hardware or verizon.
She also stated that Motorola phones when you pull the battery you should leave it out for a minimum of 2 minutes per Motorola or you are not really fixinf the problem just post poning it when a battery pull is required

So it is a software problem that they're rolling out OTA updates, or that we should try to solve this software problem by doing a 2 minute battery pull? I have kinda been afraid to ask a rep since I have rooted and installed these OTA leaks. With the new OTA that blocks root, I feel like there is some super nerd in the back room just trying to **** with us for getting off stock.
I'm stock, unrooted and installed the leak several days ago. I concur with the feedback given in this thread. My phone is fast and stable and I haven't had a single data drop (I'd only experienced dropped data once or twice since launch day).
The problem I'm chasing now is fringe signal hopping and the leak did not address it. What I'm seeing is that my wife's thunderbolt will easily hang on to a weak 4G signal as my bionic flips to 3G. This isn't a huge deal for me as it only happens a few places in my home yet it's still frustrating. The phones will sit side by side on the same coffee table both with 4G connections and suddenly the bionic flips to 3G.
I'll give credit where credit is due. HTC's latest gingerbread update on the bolt along with a mature radio version has made it a solid phone. Battery life on the bolt is now every bit as good as it is on the bionic. I wouldn't go back to it but it's nice not having to troubleshoot problems on the wife's phone. It just works.

Sometime's something obvious is overlooked, if it's a night time issue verify via battey & Data manager/ battery mode is not on nighttime saver, as most custom roms come with this as the default

Thanks. Night mode was on, but it wasn't the culprit. I changed it to Performance Mode. Data Saver is also already unchecked. Background data is on, Data roaming is on. The 3G is "connecting", and even in Phone Status it says it's connected, but the icon never turns blue.
If you aren't sure what I mean by turning blue, here's what usually happens when the phone changes connection modes. It is consistent through 3G, 4G, and Wifi.
For example's sake, I take it out of airplane mode, then this is what happens.
3G appears next to the cell signal icon. It is white.
4-5 seconds later it turns blue and you can now browse and sync, etc.
Same thing happens with wifi and 4G. The problem here is the 3G never turns blue. It just stays white and no apps can browse.

Did absolutely nothing and it just resolved itself. I think mine was an issue with the Verizon towers and/or network. Hope yours was that easy, too.
luckily mine was that easy too. I texted a friend at vzw and he said he never heard of the issue (obviously since he doesn't fart around with rooted phones and OTA updates that aren't released yet). I told him I was going to come by and grab a new Sim card and last night I tried disabling 4g again just to see what would happen and sure enough 3G kicked in, turned blue, and everything was A okay. Maybe the update just needed a day to settle down?

So it is a software problem that they're rolling out OTA updates, or that we should try to solve this software problem by doing a 2 minute battery pull? I have kinda been afraid to ask a rep since I have rooted and installed these OTA leaks. With the new OTA that blocks root, I feel like there is some super nerd in the back room just trying to **** with us for getting off stock.

The official OTA should fix the $G lte network connection loss when switching between 3g and 4g.
The battery pull is for anytime you need to pull the battery for a problem or to assure you are recieving OTA. She also said that if you pull the battery for the manufactured recommended time your device will find OTA faster if they are rolling them out.

[Q] Trouble with no calls or text

My girlfriends D3 has gradually been getting worse with poor reception, dropping calls, not being able to make/receive calls or texts.
Data seems to work fine. This weekend it just finally stopped being able to make calls or send texts from our home.
If i drive a few miles down the road or to a higher elevation i was barely able to call *228 to update roaming.
I can still use the browser over 3G and Wifi, just no tethering, phone or text.
The phone shows 3G and a full signal, but as soon as i initiate a call it drops to 1 bar.
Another thing we noticed this morning is that when calling the phone it goes straight to voicemail.
I had tried changing the Network mode from Global to CDMA yesterday and at one point got an error message saying "No CDMA networks were found. Would you like to switch to Global Mode?"
Phone has been rebooted and battery pulled along with some other diagnostic tests that the verizon techs did over the phone yesterday.
The only thing i had done to this phone was i applied the TBH tethering hack without root over a year ago. It worked fine up until now.
The phone has the latest System version 5.7.906.XT862 and the latest Baseband N_03.18.32P.
Im thinking of reverting the TBH Tethering hack back using the instructions in this post
I spoke to Verizon tech support yesterday and they said there was some trouble in our area, but my Droid X is still able to connect so i doubt thats the issue.
Does anyone think that an OTA update from Verizon may have screwed something up due to the TBH hack being applied?
The GF is frantic about getting her phone back. I can take out insurance for 6.99 pr/month and pay $100 to get her a new phone, but if reverting the TBH hack and maybe rooting and installing a new ROM might help, im all for it.
Any thoughts? ROM advice? Was reading up about the AOKP Build 40 ROM, but wondering if all the hoop jumping will help or if the D3 has a hardware issue that has just got progressively worse.
Wont you help a poor guy keep the peace with his lady please?
I don't think it's that. It's possible that the 3G in the area is good but 1x is crap. 3G is just used for data while calls/texts are used on 1x. What is the PRL versions your phone and her phone have?

My Droid X running on VXLR V2.2.0: PRL 53018
Her Droid 3 Stock w/TBH Tethering Hack: PRL 52996
Just tried updating them both and the PRL's stayed the same.
About an hour ago i was in the middle of backing up her phone and it started ringing. I was able to answer the call and now im able to make and receive texts and calls. There must have been a tower issue. The signal still drops to 2 bars when i initiate a call, but at least its working again.
She says its been flaky for quite a while with dropping calls and texts not getting sent. Im all backed up and was thinking of rooting and trying a ROM on this. Not sure if itll help with signal issues, dropped calls or texts not being sent or received.
She was also complaining about the thing pocket dialing, and other random stuff happening like her browser launching and texts being sent etc. I saw it this morning. I picked up her phone to bring it downstairs and saw that there was a text reply box open with a bunch of jibberish typed in it. She says that sort of thing happens all the time.
Think maybe a good stable ROM might help?
After a little more research i came across Minimoto here at XDA. Minimoto Link
Seems to be the way to go if im sticking to a GB ROM. I see you contributed some to it. Would you happen to know where some step by step instructions for getting it installed on a non rooted D3 might be?
1) Root it.
2) Install Safestrap 3.05.
3) Reboot to it, create ROM-Slot 1.
4) Factory reset and wipe cache and delvik.
5) Flash the ROM.
6) Set her up with goodness.
Though if random crap is popping up, I suspect the digitizer is flaky.

Have you heard of digitizer issues with D3's before?
Any recommendations on which rooting method to use?
Do i have to remove the TBH Tether hack before rooting, installing Safestrap or Flashing the ROM?
So i take it your in agreement that this would be a good choice for a stable no frills GB ROM?
the random stuff can be from from a bad digitizer, dirt/grime on digitizer/edge or a software conflict
try cleaning screen around the edge, and/or flash rom/sbf
you need to remove bootstrap before safestrap, tbh hack should be fine
i haven't use minmo, but many have, also you could look at

use the Deodexed ROM (Courtesy of thingonaspring) link

Thanks sd_shadow I think ill stick with minimo most likely. Too many dam ROMS to choose from!.
Ok so from the hours of reading i did yesterday, i found a working link for motofail. It appears it is the best (or only) way to root the D3 if on 906.
From there i thought i could just install Safestrap 3.05 which i managed to track down as well.
I never installed Bootstrap, so does this even apply? Is there a factory bootstrap included with the D3?
I believe i read that minimoto has its own tethering feature included. So are we sure i dont have to revert the TBH tethering hack?
Some great links in your signature by the way. If the digitizer keeps acting up, i may try replacing it. I did clean it last night and will see if things improve.

I think your the only person to say that for the d3 lol. Most of us are flash- a-holics and we love lots of roms to chose from.

Just install safestrap on your safe system after root don't worry about bootstrap.

No

No you do not have to undo the tether hack it is a hardwear hack not a software hack and will work on any rom no matter if the rom already has tethering in it.
