[Q] Exchange active sync forced security - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A letter, a number AAAAAND A CHARACTER!!!
Jesus. This sucks. I cannot believe how annoying my phone has just become. Is there any way to bypass this? I cant even set the screen timeout or use a pattern.
Someone please tell me I can beat this.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Can you explain the situation clearly?
I don't have any problems with my corporate Exchange setup.

the only way around this that I'm aware of is to sweet-talk your network admin to relax the security requirements

I have exchange mail, work and on my note. Until yesterday I was able to set my lock to a pattern. Suddenly I got a forced exchange server security update which seems to have encrypted half my sd card as well as took away the option of locking my phone with a pattern, or leaving it unlocked, as well as the inability to change the timeout setting on my screen. I can only , and must set a type written password which must consist of no less than 6 button presses, which must contain of at least one letter, one number and one character.
i spend half my day typing passwords now. it is absolutely miserable.
help. please sweet christ help me.
help.
jason

Wow that sucks big time!
We don't enforce any policy like that!
We only enable the remote wipe and remote lock and obviously those policies kick-in on a per case scenario.
Do you happen to work at NASA or Area 51? :-D

If you do a search on XDA, there is a hacked Samsung email app that bypasses or removes the mandatory locking. Unfortunately it has not been updated for a while. think it's in the Nexus S development forum. Other than that you can purchase the Touchdown email app which only forces you to put in your lock code when you open your corporate email, and you can keep your phone unlocked. The drawback of this is the app is like $20 or $30 dollars.. Finally there is Enhanced Email in the Google Play store for $10 which has the ability to disable Exchange security policies.

Wow. Just found a new feature.

First of all, from HTC Kaiser to Samsung Vibrant to HTC HD 7 & I'm never going to look back!
OK now:
1. Go to an Email tile
2. Tap on the far left (next to the bolded name of the sender)
3. Voila - you have a slick option to select mail
Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. Thought it might be useful
Yeah found it the other day by mistake but I didn't think it was any earth mover
Yeah, my phone actually pointed the feature out the other day - I was deleting several emails one at a time, and a little info bar appeared at the top to say you can click on the left to quick select.
Not an earth mover at all, but neat that it recognised what I was doing and was able to tell me how I could do it quicker!

That makes no sense, what is the point of keeping an email once you have read it? I check most of my emails on my desk top, the phone I use to track what is happening via emails for 4 different accounts when out with clients.
I dont need 100 emails sitting on my phone.
I am simply stating that every phone I have every used even old ones allowed you to do a select all feature for old sms phones.
HD2 has it, why was it not placed into WM7, just a small feature which is important but also missing as many important ones are.
but face book is there, wheeepy another face book driven phone, like we dont have enough of those.
Here's another one that you may (or may not) be aware of.
when typing press and hold on the actual text you have been typing. A cursor will appear allowing you to re-position anywhere within the text.
very handy for going back to make changes (like inserting a space between words, inserting words etc.

[Q] Notification Saying "fwd fwd please call [?phone number]"

Today I saw something really weird, I am asking for an explanation of what it was.
I had my N1 screen locked and in my pocket.
I took it out to check the time... so first I hit the power button to turn the screen on.
As soon as the screen was on I saw what I think is called a "biscuit?" type notification on my phone that was centered in the screen. It said:
"fwd fwd please call [phone number I didn't recognize]"
Below that was two buttons I think for "Call" or "Dismiss".
I hit Dismiss and went on to unlock the phone and check the time but it was the only time I have ever seen that type of notification.
I checked new Emails, Texts, Chats but it wasn't part of any of those.
Sorry I couldn't get a screen capture of it.
Any bright ideas out there?
My configuration:
N1, Tmobile, was rooted prior to manually install gingerbread from update.zip. [I don't think it's rooted anymore]

If anyone did have one of those listed apps, I'd also suggest turning on Google's 2-Step verification for your Gmail account. I unfortunately downloaded the 'Chess' app last week, only to find it didn't actually appear to do anything at all when I opened it on my N1. But within a few days, my Gmail account was hijacked for spam. It's the only correlation I have, and while I have no proof, it's a strong suspicion and probably good advice anyway.

On that note, it's probably not a bad idea to go ahead and install a free mobile antivirus program like Lookout, AVG, or Norton.
I'm not sure if this is the same, but might be something to look at. My voicemail with tmo offers people the option to page instead of leave a message. When they do, I always get some cryptic 'please call [number]' message that shows up like a text.

Not having access to those malicious apps to test with, I can't say for sure. What I can say is that those antivirus apps will detect far more malicious apps than you would without them. Especially when it's free, it doesn't make any sense to not have some sort of protection.
EDIT: As mentioned on the Official Lookout Blog:
Update: We’ve deployed an over-the-air update that protects Lookout users from all known instances of DroidDream.

So at least with the update, yes, Lookout would now detect the DroidDream malware. Again, better safe than sorry.

I think this is what I saw. I have TMo and their visual voicemail app, and with no signal in the building I was working in a caller must have done that paging thing.
It was weird that it didn't look like a text notification.
Also thanks for the tip about malware, I didn't have any of the apps listed, but the google account check is very good advice.

I was thinking they might be called "pancake" notification? Some sort of breakfast snack... either way I repeated the condition by dialing my phone and "paging" option. Thanks all you all.

Corporate sync disables 1080p video recording

I am pretty annoyed right now. The corporate sync that auto enables (and forces) storage encryption breaks the 1080p video recording. Anyone know of a way to hack this? I tried removing the device administrator corporate sync, but obviously it won't let me do that.
I dont follow?? I'm on corporate sync and can record 1080p no problem.
I have corporate sync aswell and I recorded a bunch of 1080p videos this weekend.
Its the encryption that causes the problem. I don't use corporate sync, but was going to encrypt the phone, and that popped up as a warning so I didn't do it.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
Because of the device administrator rules, I cannot disable the encryption. I have to find a way to disable manually.

Same issue
Got that same annoyance. I'm a security freak and don't like the idea of not having my data encrypted but I'm disappointed I can't use my DB to it's full recording potentials. Recorded a video recently and the quality sucks at 720x480 (max resolution with encryption enabled).
Well, if anyone knows of a way to disable the lock so that I can disable the encryption, hook a brother up.

Ask your Exchange admin to build you an ActiveSync policy that does not have the encryption enabled. Then do factory reset and set up corp sync again.
EDIT: You may actually be able to apply the new poilicy without having to do a factory reset. Not sure, though.

When I had my captivate, there were several roms that disabled certain exchange policies. One allowed for the android lockscreen vs typing in a code. I can see how being able to disable the encryption would help a lot of people.
Why did motorola make enabling encryption disable 1080p video anyway? Data I/O?
Does anyone know if using touchdown instead of the email program will bypass the need for full device encryption?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
This might be super annoying depending on how much you are going to be recording 1080p, but you could always go into security options and remove exchange as an admin.
This would basically remove the restrictions on the phone, and allow you to record. You would of course have to go back in and set up corporate sync again. That takes a few seconds to do, so no biggy there. I can see it being really annoying though if you are shooting video every day or something.

4.2 known bugs

I thought it would be nice for both users and developers what to expect from next update to fix or be fixed. I'm gonna give a kick start to known bugs, so that we can be aware of the faults of 4.2. Don't shoot the things you didn't like here since it is nothing to do with this "bug" thread. Here I go..
1. I keep telling myself this should not be a bug since it is so obvious but there is no reason for it to be implemented that way. Which is the hour segment of lock screen time being bold and the other half is normal font.. Maybe there is a reason for this hopefully..
2. Pull down the notification bar from top, when it is down, pull down from the top most again. Notification center will continue going down and out of the screen. It applies for both quick settings and notification center.. Major bug! - 1 to googles test engineers.
Now you can add your own test cases and bugs and maybe we have great devs to sort them out and develop great custom roms..
I don't think either is a bug ,more or less design desicions. I actually like both things you mentioned

I can understand the first one but you clearly didn't understand the second. This is a major bug because a layout goes out of screen. They seem to not lock pulling down from the top most of the screen when it is already pulled down.. Result; notification center goes out of the screen..

If you fling it down it stops ,then you can pull it all the way down or just fling it back up.trust me they designed it that way ,it's not a bug.

But on the lock screen .. Long tap the clock quickly.. you will see a big square highlight the unlock button Slide to unlock . This will take you to a STOP WATCH TYPE INTERFACE..
I Was hoping there would be a way in there to change the stupid bold hour number . That is gross to look at ..
Just to try it i Created a 3rd user..From the lock screen then you log into that user account to set it up. When it gets the point it ask for user Name SU Pops up asking to grant permission .. then give a message ..
SuperSU has granted superuser permission :/system/bin/id
tried 3 times .. if you let it set on that screen you will get Supersu isnt responding .. You click ok then it will allow you to continue setting up the account.
The second account set up fine.. Just thought i would try a 3rd and look at directory structure..
Can someone try and see if its just me with the issue. It finally created the account. with a reboot. but its unstable .Thanks Erica
Youtube is borked with stereo (a2dp) bluetooth headsets - sync issues, laggy, scratchy. They have clearly done some changes to bluetooth audio (you can hear the bluetooth headset mute/come alive when there is a moment or two of no sound).
Can't log into gmail with another account in chrome.
I used to log into another account in chrome that I haven't bothered linking. I went to gmail in chrome (not requesting desktop version) and I was already logged into my primary account. It's never done that before. I thought no big deal and signed out. Now gmail continually loops on the address constantly refreshing but the site never actually comes up.
And not a bug, but I'm annoyed Nexus 7 didn't get miracast. Can't imagine the reason for that. And the what's new page isn't clear that it is only nexus 4. http://www.android.com/whatsnew/
Yes it does say "Share what’s on your phone on the big screen." but the rest of the text and the page makes it seem like these are 4.2 features and not exclusive to N4. I'm hoping custom roms will enable miracast.
Also, not a bug but a feature lost, the camera no longer has the funny faces (big nose, small eyes etc). ya I know a dorky feature but I don't see why it was removed. I know the nexus 7 didn't have the camera enabled by default but we have the new camera app so I assume other devices lost those as well.

Think I've read somewhere that's it's possible via adb, but you'd need usb debugging to have been previously enabled before you got locked out.
That's all I got as a possibility....

I thought I would post what I think was the problem in case someone else has the issue. I think it is Gmail verification feature. It maybe possible if you forget your phone password, you can use the Gmail email password to get in as mention on some of the post? AT&T also said she should be able to unlock phone with Gmail password. Details below.
Phone has been reset a few days from posting this. Good thing pictures are syncing with Google Drive.
I believe the problem why the password would not work is because of Google's verify feature on Gmail. For example when you go on to another computer and try to access your gmail, it will ask for a verification code and send you a text with the verification code. I believe this was the problem because once the phone was hard reset, the phone would not accept her Gmail account password. After diagnosing this issue, I decided to try to disable the verification feature on Gmail. Once it was disabled, I was able to get past the Gmail password issue.
To avoid from this happening again I put Androidlost which will allow me unlock the phone remotely. Great App especially being free. My wife doesn't want the phone rooted so this is the best solution for me plus I been using this App since the Galaxy S2 was released and never had an issue with the App. I actually had the app installed before she got locked out but never finish registering the phone, yeah that sucked. Lesson learned the hard way.
Thanks everyone who tried helping.
If u have linked your phone with android device manager you can simply change the password to whatever you want on android device manager on your desktop.
