Phone does not boot after failed Kies GB upgrade - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My AT&T Captivate was on Froyo. Today I got time to upgrade it to Gingerbread. After several problems with Kies, I could finally make it run, but before it could finish, Kies reported that upgrade failed and asked me to reboot.
Now when I reboot, I only see Mobile Icon+ ! + PC Icon. I could get once in download mode.
I am not sure what should I do?
(1) Do I have to install Eclair (2.1) using ODIN?
(2) Or can I install GB directly? If so how?
(3) Can I install some other ROMS like Cynogenmod?
I found lot of Odin files on the Internet and am not sure which one should I use?
Please help! Any URL for download would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Flash gingerbread ROM with boot-loaders.

Yes I am downloading I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe mentioned by XDA member 4-2ndtwin. I saw some youtube videos on how to get into download mode. I hope I should get GB soon...will update once I do it.
Thanks.

I trying loading using Odin but it got stuck at "Setting up connection"
I then restarted PC and did it again and this time it went 2 more steps and then the screen became completely GREEN
Then I did the whole exercise again and now the screen became PINK
Now I am not even able to get into DOWNLOAD MODE...and neither do I see [mobile]![PC] icons.
Nothing happens. Is my phone now really bricked?
Please help! I am now worried about this.

[Q] Captivate Boot Loop after Odin one click

Hello all and thx in advance.
ATT Captivate batch 1010
I had Cognition 2.3 I think on my phone and it worked great however I wanted to try a different ROM so I attempted to restore my phone to stock using ODIN one click. I realized after that that I never disabled the voodoo lag fix or deleted my user data.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop that either shows the white ATT logo screen flashing every couple seconds or the phone off charge screen re starting every couple seconds.
I bought a USB Jig and it works great so I can get into D/L mode easily but I have tried flashing the stock firmware at least 6 times now using different machines, different ports, different versions of ODIN and I've searched around these forums and others for several hours trying to find a solution. It seems that I needed to erase my user data in recovery mode and removed the lag fix before I did this but it is what it is. I have tried to get to recovery mode to no avail. All I can get to is download mode.
Any ideas on what I should/can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that you may need to use the Froyo Odin (JI6).

please help, i have the same problem, was flashing back to stock from a serendipit 5.12 so that i could get the 6.0 version... all went as planned until odin said "reset" which was my cue to unplug and that the process was complete.... i unplugged the phone and tried to reboot and now it does exactly as the first post described, at&t logo then black screen, then back to the at&t logo then black screen again... my computer doesnt recognize my phone none of the methods of getting to download screen will work... no matter how many times i pull the sd, sim, and batt, no matter the button combination i use or which order i use them in.... same result... i cant afford a new phone i need help, i will donate also... i knew this stuff was over my head, but "curiosity killed the cat" i guess...
I had the exact same problem. Try this method, it's the one that worked for me when all others failed... But remember to follow it EXACTLY.
1. Pull out the battery.
2. Hold Volume UP+DOWN (Don't let go of them until you see the download screen).
3. Stick in the USB (which is connected to the computer).
4. Put the battery back in.
If not, you might need to get a USB Jig.
That Froyo Odin link worked!
Thanks guys I flashed to Froyo and it worked!
I've since flashed clockwork recovery and gotten Serendipity 6.1
As far as getting into download mode I had to use one of the USB jigs.
I ordered one from the guy who does the rom reviews but you could make one as well.
On another note the new ROM seems to be discharging my battery really fast
Before I start investigating it as a problem I am going to charge it completely then let it discharge completely to calibrate it.
Thanks again guys
Rob
I just fixed mine last night, I had the exact same problem because of the exact same upgrade. What you need to do is get or make a usb jig. There's a couple resources around here for how to do it.
Here's a video showing how to make one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Once I got my phone into download mode, I used Darky's ROM Resurrection Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 ) to restore my phone. Just scroll down to where it says "Files Needed" and download the Captivate version. Once you have that downloaded, use the jig to put your phone into download mode and follow the directions in the Darky's video (jump to about 2:30 into the video). Once I had my phone booting, I used clockwork to install Serendipity 6.
Hope that helps you as much as it helped me!!
went to radio shack, got all the stuff to make a jig and i was able to get my phone into download mode! now to try darko...... thanks everyone!
odin doesnt reconize phone
which odin3 are you using? 1.7? or the one click to stock?
you mentioned you had the bootloop problem before, so you should be using odin 1.7 with 2.2 stock.
open odin
get phone into download mode with your nice jig
unplug jig and plug in computer
box in odin should turn yellow.
And make sure you have the correct drivers installed. CRUCIAL.

Yep, tried the Odin one click - caught in a boot loop with the AT&T Logo. I have yet to try the Heimdall one.
UPDATE
Tried Odin and Heimdall One-Clicks - unsuccessful. I'm think I will need the stock Eclair firmware file with Odin and the pit file.

You ever get this to work? - I'm in a similar situation. all flashes 'work' but get stuck at ATT on boot. Not sure Eclair is an option or not since mine is a refurbished phone that started on 2.2

If one-clicks aren't working, you might need to grab the full version of Heimdall or Odin and flash a full package. Some of the newer phone builds don't like one-clicks.

I am interested in rooting too, and I have gingerbread. I have 2 problems though, first, I do not have the 3button combo working. I thought the gingerbread update would fix it, but no luck, and the method I found here did not work. I hear that you should not try to root without the 3 button combo working, but what choice do I have, samsung update did not fix this bootloader problem. I cannot put my phone in download mode without having it plugged in and recognized by adb.
My 2nd problem is that I have a I9000T and it seems nobody has this phone around here so I have no way of knowing if some of the rooting options even work for my phoen and firmeware.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I actually have a i9000t, ive soft bricked a few times as long as you could get into download mode you should be ok, allways keep a stock rom around just incase to flash back to through odin.
Ive flashed a few modem with no problems, few roms with minimal problems..
Cm7 lost radio and weird pixle screen boot.
Deoxidized roms work good.
I had flashed Darkys 9.5 and everything worked till i noticed the stock music player gave me reboots.
I had tried flashing MIUI but no luck at all, could of been my zip. File was messed up but i tried a diffrent and still nothing. Now im on Darky 10.1 final no problems.
This has to be the most stable/fastest rom ive ever flashed.

hi.. do you have official kies installed on your computer?
if so uninstall it first... and installed the unofficial samsung driver.. sorry i cant post link here as am junior member..
you can search in google "samsung usb.rar". Once you download it, then installed it on your computer. Open you odin, put your phone in download mode,
and plug in to computer, then odin should be able to recognize your phone.
Once I have the same problem and it works for me with above step. hope that help.

Thanks for the reply! Ok, I finally manage to have the 3button combo work and get into download mode and recovery mode. I want to root, can you tell me if the odin method works on 2.3.3 stock, on I9000T . Also, How can I fully backup my phone. Which android version did you have when you rooted.
Also, I keep reading those very old threads and I was wondering what the latest Odin version is used for 2.3.3.

Turns out We/I have been using the wrong button combo for download. Download mode is: Vol DOWN+Home+Power On.!!! Recovery mode is Vol UP+Home+Power On. I used Fuguroot with my stock kernel from RAMAD (senior developer). Flashed with odin & it took LESS THAN 2 MIN! I don't have a galaxy tab, but it should be similliar to my galaxy s. I think your device is NOT bricked. As long as you can get to download mode, your device is NOT bricked. If you can get there, you should try to flash with odin/heimdall again. I think you must have done something wrong in the flashing process. AFAIK the logo is displayed by bootloader (primary), so if nothing went wrong with flashing the secondary one (download mode), you should be able to flash again.

Bricked Captivate - Random dots on the screen instead of Download mode

Hi there,
To brief the story:
Tried to upgrade my Rogers Captivate non-root Froyo to Gingerbread trough Kies the first attempt failed as after 30 min there was no progress on the installation bar, I disconnected the phone and restarted it, it booted up well and again I tried to upgrade. This time the bar filled up to 10% and then the screen on my phone went all Pink!! and the progress got stuck, then the phone was in semi-bricked state. I tried to flash back to 2.2 stock ROM on Odin 3 v1.82 the progress failed half way with a all purple screen (the green bar on Odin was almost at the beginning of the procedure). I thought to get it into DL mode once more to see if I could succeed but no DL mode anymore, all I get is random dots all over the screen!! and even when it gets connected on COM, ODIN cannot reach it anymore and it fails at Setup Connection. My belief is that my phone is bricked totally, but wanted to see if anybody on XDA has any thoughts for this.
Thanks for the help and time in advance.
Chrs.
Sounds to me like a faulty connection. Try another USB port or another cable?
Try heimdall..and another cable

your phone is not bricked. if it were bricked it would not turn on.
the pixilated screen means there is no params.lfs file on the phone anymore.
if you can get into download mode the phone can be saved.
try flashing the ATT one-click odin first... and rogers 2.2 after.
if still not working....
then i would try another USB cable, yours might have a bad connection.
next i would try another computer.
If anyone know trussello does.

Thank you guys for all the responses.
I guess I found the cure for it. I plugged the phone into the power and after a while (5 min or so) the screen turned all white (the same as all pink and all purple thing which if one notices can see the very blurry shade of the notification bar on top!). I turned it off and try the volume up and down DL mode method, it turned on in the same all white screen, I started the Odin and voila, it passed the setup connection step (cannot relate the connecting to the power with the resolution I got in any way!!!). I got the stock version back now wanna try to root and clean up the mess.
Chrs,
BTW I am trying to update it to the most recent gingerbread version Rogers provided:
- in Kies it shows I-896!! although I used the Froyo stock version posted in Xda by TRusselo
- Therefore it doesn't recognize my phone and therefore I cannot flash the recent update
- does anyone have a stock version of the most recent 2.3.3 update handy?
another problem I got into is that I cannot browse all my media file in storage mode, out of 2000+ pictures it only browses 900 and even I cannot copy those as it seems unreachable
any suggestions/clues?
the roger captivate IS the i896 the i897 is the att.
you may want to check out your csc version read here in this thread....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17835946#post17835946
trying the 2.1 (toronto) version couldnt hurt either

ATT is i897 Rogers is i896.
Yes, but as TRusselo pointed out the CSC is missing so that is why it just shows I896.
Before getting into fixing the CSC I need to copy all my gallery files. I can browse them on my cell and swipe through all in the gallery but cannot copy them through neither of the connection modes.
-For Kies Update and Media modes it takes ages to cache the images but it fails to get all of them and then even fails to copy
- mass storage only browse 900 out of 2000+ where I cannot copy them
any solution for this?
Thx for all the help.
Trussello, a few things...
1. The guy who released that has 22 posts, no track record
2. That's a heimdall pacakge, not Odin
3. My one-click is much easier.
4. The only reason my package is tagged beta is because Heimdall is not fully operative for flashing PIT files. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172

[Q] I9000 Gingerbread 2.3.3 root gone south, plz help

Hi
I was trying to root my Galaxy with gingerbread 2.3.3.
I installed Odin3 and downloaded CF-Root-XW_NEE_JVH-v3.2-CWM3RFS put the tar in PDA on Odin, restarted my phone, put it into download mode, pluged in the USB, pressed start, and got a failure notice and that there was a Comm error.
I figured that there was not done anything to the phone since there was a comunitation error, so i unplugged the phone and tryed to start it up, but there was only a black screen with a picture of a phone...Triangle with !...and a PC sign.
I then tryed to look on the web for a clue, and someone was writing that Heimdall was so much better to use.
So i downloaded Heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32 and opend XXJVT_Heimdall.tar in Heimdall, Connected the Phone in download mode and started the prossess, after a few moments i got error in uploading PIT and the whole thing aborted.
When i try to turn off the phone now, notting happens, not even the black screen with the triangle. Its only download mode that works.
Can someone plz help me? im lost!
If download mode works, it's should let u use odin again or not?
Don't worry. Rule of thumb: if you can get into download mode, you're fine.
Download a firmware of your choice (JVS being the newest, I've literally just flashed it). Boot into download mode and flash the firmware. You'll be back to stock. From here, you can install a custom kernel with root.
same kind of issue with me..the only difference cant get into download mode..stuck on the at&t logo..the phone keeps on flashing a white n black screen..any help?

[Q] My Galaxy Note(SHV-E160L) is bricked...

before writing, I'm so sorry for my pooooor English.
I live in Toronto, Canada. I bought my Galaxy Note(SHV-E160L) from Korea, so change sim card from LG U+ to Rogers.
but when I sleep, Note encounter Unlimited Reboot.
so I try to repair in 3-way.
first, Factory reset. but I could make Download mode only, couldn't make Recovery mode.
so I try Samsung Kies Recovery mode, but Kies show me binery Error.
last, I want to use ODIN, but ODIN show me Error Message, too.
"Complete(write) operation failed"
What this means?
If it can't be repaired, I must send my cell phone to Korea.
I'm very embrassed...
please help me!!
and Merry Christmas for you
Is it sticking on factoryfs.img in ODIN ? this usually means its bricked which kernel where you on when you did the factory reset ?
I had a similar issue last week, stuck in odin, everything failing, I was convinced it was bricked, I manage to repair it by (no joking here) flashing a million wrong things in ODIN.... But DO NOT TRY THIS lol
try to flash a safe kernel through ODIN, and then see if it bring back recovery, then you can wipe and flash a new rom (hopefully)
otherwise there is the pit file method to revive from a brick, which works well, but loses around 3gb of internal sd space

try this method:
download a stock gingerbread rom then go into download recovery, flash it with odin, root your phone.
from here you can install any custom rom, this is how i do when i got bootloop.

Perhaps should follow closely the guide for using odin from Dr ketan should help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
1. Installation
- Download stock ROM (should start with a GB rom), and extract it to .tar file
- Download Odin, open it
- select PDA tab and point to ROM file. Leave Re-partition, pit, CSC, Phone tab unticked.
- Switch off device, Put in download mode (Vol down + Home + Power)
- completely close kies, Anti virus if running
- Connect device to PC
- ID com port shud turn yellow (not shown in image)
Now hit Start
----
see how it goes.
Same problem as OP
Hello guys,
unfortunately, I have the same problem with my 32GB SHV-E160L as OP. Little backstory:
I bought the GNote in Korea and brought it back to my country. I successfully rooted it with one of the guides here on XDA (Tegrak kernel, no OC whatsoever). No problems so far, the phone worked for weeks and I was able to do what you can do with rooted phones. One day while surfing the net it just crashed and was stuck in a boot loop. This is where I am now.
I tried:
Go into tegrak recovery. result: It gets stuck on samsung logo, funnily the phone would establish a usb connection if plugged in (as if in download mode)
Reset from Kies. result: After beeing told by Kies to go into download mode, instead of flashing the new software it gives an error message in Korean about missing binaries (see attachment)
Flash from odin. result: the dreaded red box with "fail" appears after the NAND write command
Now, after doing my research here on XDA I found out that my emmc might have damaged partitions and I need a PIT file. Here's where I'm stuck.... I can't find a PIT file for my 32GB note, only for the N7000 or the I717. And I don't want to mess things further up... so if anyone here could provide me with a PIT file, or tell me how to fix the phone through other means I would be really grateful
Thanks in advance....
You should ask hg42 if he can make one - in his thread I read that he did this before even for other devices.
So try a pm or post in his thread. Good luck
