MTP/Kies connection problem when phone is locked - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm having some problems with my Note connecting to my computer. My PC is running Windows Ultimate 64 bit and I'm running the latest version of Kies (and every other driver is up to date).
Apparently, my computer only "sees" my Note (in MTP mode) if I connect it when the screen is unlocked (I keep a screen / key guard on all the time on my Note). If I connect the Note when it is "sleeping", the computer "sees" it but I cannot access any of its drives (MTP here). Kies does not "see" it either if I connect it while it's "sleeping".
If I connect my Note when it's "awake" and unlocked, both Kies and Windows can access it perfectly. So then I schedule a back up through Kies and, while in progress, the Note goes to sleep / lock mode (my screen times out after 15 seconds). When that happens, Kies hangs doing the backup (and never finishes) and sometimes I cannot access it any more with Windows Explorer.
I've tried any trick in the book, including reinstalling Kies / drivers or troubleshooting the connection and I kind of am out of ideas here. What do you think?
Thank you!

ActiveSync: device not detected

I cannot get ActiveSync to detect my phone.
I get the XP message "USB Device Not Recognized" when I plug in the phone.
I have checked my USB drivers. They are more up to date (2004) than the ones listed on the Microsoft support page listed in the ActiveSync readme.doc
I am running ActiveSync 4.5 on a Windows XP laptop
Windows Mobile 6 CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
on an Orange Tytn II (ok, I will flash the rom once I have a working ActiveSync!)
I have tried switching off the firewall on the laptop - no luck.
Changing the in "Enable advanced network functionality" through the 'USB to PC' connections makes no difference.
In the Get Connected Window USB is listed as having status "USB is available" after clicking Next on Checking COM ports (it takes a while).
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 (obtained from both the CD and the Microsoft web site).
I have done the usual cycle of switching everything off and rebooting (several times).
I have tried all four of the USB ports on my ASUS A6000.
New suggestions for things to try most welcome.
I did have the same problem myself when I first got mine. I also tried turning firewalls off etc. The only method that seemed to regularly work was to reset the kaiser and ultimately a hard reset
i had a similar problem and i found it was because i still had the nokia phone sync software on my pc too .. removing it sorted the problem
Soft reset the device, reboot the pc.
If USB syncing doesnt work, try bluetooth.
Works for approx 30 secs after reboot
I think I have a faulty phone.
ActiveSync works for about 30 seconds after a reboot, as does gps tracking, and then the connection is lost (and gps fixes on the last tracked location). I have tried soft/hard resets, all to no avail.
Unfortunately I bought the phone in London and I will have to wait until I am next in London to take it back to the Orange shop for a replacement :-(
I am having the same issue but I cant get activesync to work at all
I could recognise the kaiser on one PC but not on another, messed around and go it working then it stoped , all along it was mt Firewall, disabled the fire wall never had any more problems with activesync. that was my issue might be something for you to look into

I think your phone is ok. ActiveSync always gives all kind of problems.
I sync my kaiser on my desktop, my laptop and at work. For some reason, my desktop had exactly the same problem than yours. I tried everything!
Finally I found something that made it work much better. Go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck the option 'Enable advanced network functionality'
After that, I still get some random disconnects, but only happens like every 3 or 4 days.
Hope it helps.
I had this same problem (device not being recognised) but fixed it by connecting the USB directly to the PC not via a USB hub. This makes me think that the TyTN II requires the maximum current from its USB connector to work; a hub reduces the available power; some PC connections may not have enough and this could account for the problems some users are experiencing perhaps??

Have you fixed the problem yet? I'm having the same problem and tried everything suggested here.
I tried it on 2 computers with Vista. First it worked, but since my laptop with XP isn't reacting on my Kaiser anymore, Vista can't find the Kaiser too. Only a friend of mine, who has a Trinity, can use activesync. Is flashing a good fix?
Found solution to my problem
I have finally found a solution that works for me (having tried everything that everybody has suggested, plus more).
I found that if you have a password enabled (ie, something that has to be typed when the phone is first switched on; available via Settings -> Personal -> Lock) and a firewall running, then an ActiveSync connection fails for no obvious reason.
Disable the firewall and your phone will prompt you for the password after which ActiveSync works.
Disable the password and there is no prompt with/without firewall and ActiveSync works.
In my case I also had to untick the 'enable advanced network functionality'.
i am starting to thing there maybe a big problems here , i have the same thing and nothing has helped,,diffant pc`s i have hard reset the phone, unticked Enable advanced network. and still nothing.
The problem that I found was the notifications queue for ActiveSync on my phone had been corrupted.
I downloaded memmaid and used the "recreate Activesync" under the database menu.
Unplug from the USB, run MemMaid and on the "JumpTo" softkey go to "Databases\Notification queue". Tap on the arrow to the right of "Add..." and tap "Recreate ActiveSync". Soft reset your phone wait 60 seconds after everything is loaded and plug the USB cable in. You should be good to go.
This is a known problem with ActiveSync and happens on a plethora of WMD's, not just the Kaiser or HTC. I used to have the same problem on an iPaq PPC. Microsoft's official answer to this was it was the OEM's fault for not following strict rules on implementing properly coded USB drivers.

New Xperia will not connect with Vista

Hi,
I am getting a bit frustrated over this.
When I connect my X1 to my Vista x86 nothing happens (well the USB task tray icon show for about a second and vanishes again).
When I disable the "advanced option" in the USB/PC connection settings in the X1 I at least get a USB connection with something identified as "PocketPC USB Sync".
Any idea why this is happening and how I can get a real connection with the win mobile device center?
Thanks for helping me out!
Cheers,
Tillman
maybe give this a try:
http://modernnomads.info/wiki/index.php?page=Windows+Mobile+Device+Center+Troubleshooting
I've once had the issues of not able to connect my Windows Mobile device with vista too, and it can get very annoying.. good luck with it.
You might want to try and disable the firewall and then connect the device. I had this problem with Sygate Personal Firewall (sygate was bought by symantec and personal firewall is now terminated and no longer available)
Thanks for the quick response guys!
I already tried disabling the firewall (nod32) but that did not help.
Also checked all services - everything is peachy in that department.
But still - no connection.
When I switch back to "legacy mode" (disabling the advanced option in usb/pc settings on the device) then the device will tell me that I need to install active sync 4.5 or higher and wmdc still does not connect.
This is really strange...and annoying and the same time.
Any more ideas or any way for me to debug what's going on?
Thanks for you help!
Have you intalled "Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1" on your Vista-PC?
The MobileDeviceCenter should be standard without the need to install...
At my Vista Home the X1 had no problems to connect.
Open the Mobile Device Center and delete all old connections of other PPC. Then start your PC again, Softreset your X1 and try again. This should help. I had the problems too, when first connecting, because he didn't liked my G900-connection which was first
After this I too could install my G900 again and no problems since yet (2 weeks).

Well sometimes the Mobile Device center could stuff up or not work due to some issues such as installation of Mobile Device Center 6.1 went wrong. I have experienced that I think I didn't follow the procedures correctly and things just wouldn't work. Eventually I had to do some uninstall and reinstall many times to finally get it working.
When I first plugged mine it it installed some drivers but didn't show up in the Mobile Device Center; unplugging and replugging in caused it to work...did you change settings in between plugging in for the second time?
What I have tried so far (and nothing worked):
Uninstall / reinstall WMDC
Uninstall / reinstall Win Mobile Remote Adapter (yes, this does show up once I am connected with "advanced" USB mode)
Uninstall / reinstall "PocketPC USB Sync" (shows when X1 is set to legacy USB mode)
When in "advanced" mode I can also see a new LAN connection showing up in network overview.
The same X1 on a different Vista 32bit right next to this one will connect just fine. So it's definitely about a driver or config thing with this Vista.
This is driving me...well you know what.
btw, you did try restarting your comp when performing some of those steps, and you did try different USB ports right?
I know that you had to ask.
Yes I did. I have rebooted the system several times in between all those reinstallation tasks.
By the way. When I am in USB legacy mode and reconnect the USB cable then the X1 will show a messagebox telling me that it's connecting with the host and that the user credentials / user account (having to translate here) are correct.
But still NO connection visible in WMDC.
I had the same problem with my X1. I assumed that because my HTC Diamond worked the X1 would as well.
I finally installed WMDC from the SE install cd, and bingo!! al good. Hope it works for you...
Wow!
Even though it does not work (yet) it's showing some new signs.
Installing WMDC from SE disc fails at 99% progress and then rolls back.
There's gotta be some installation error log this, right?
Thanks for coming up with that suggestion. Really, I should try installing from vendor CDs more often instead of hunting down the latest version on the net.

maybe give event viewer a try and check under Windows Logs (not sure if it will be application or system tho)
just in case you aren't sure, in vista either type in "Event Viewer" in the start menu search bar, or type in "eventvwr"
Don't you just like vista?
That helped (to install SE's WMDC). The issue was that my HTC Universal was still connected to one USB port (for testing purposes since that device is not recognized either).
As soon as I unplugged the HTC I was able to complete the WMDC installation.
Unfortunately though it still won't connect to my X1.
Any more ideas?
what is your settings in Windows Mobile Device Center connection Settings?
Well here is my settings that is working with my x1:
Allow USB connections checked
Allow connections to "DMA"
This computer is connected to "Automatic" (this shouldn't matter)
Allow automatic device authentication checked
Allow data connection on device when connected to PC (this shouldn't matter either)
also, while this link was in the first link that I have posted for trouble shooting, just want to make sure you actually tried The offical Windows Mobile Device Center troubleshooting guide?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-troubleshooting.mspx
namely these steps:
Quote"
If Windows Live OneCare is installed on your machine, it may be blocking the device connectivity. Please click here for the steps to configure Windows Live OneCare to allow the device to connect.
My device wasn’t connected during this installation.
While it is not a strict requirement that you have a device connected during the installation process of Windows Mobile Device Center, we highly recommend that you do.
"
I didn't have the DMA set (changed that now). Everything else already was like you described and it does not work.
This really freaks me out. I always hated my iTunes/iPhone connectivity but that honestly works much smoother. Of course I do understand that this behavior is non standard as I have experienced myself that the phone works with my other Vista machine but that does not really help me here.
Any update on this? I am having the same problem.
I'm having the _exact_ same problem too, but in Vista x64. I don't know why WMDC can be such a c**t sometimes, as I have never been able to 'sync' with my Media Center PC.
My only saving grace is that my laptop has Bluetooth, and syncing works great on it. I have never had success connecting the USB cable (with many options changed around of course) to either of these computers. Only Bluetooth syncing works for me...
Hopefully we can find the answer!
What USB cable are you using??? the one that came with Xperia??? Cos the one that came with my Xperia never worked out of the box, it could only charge...
I also got another extra cord which came in another box, that worked fine for both syncing and transferring data until today, now it says USB device not recognized, maybe I was trying the flash X1 with new ROM through SEUS, did the whole lower volume key and power button to get the 3 strips.
Now I am using the USB cable that came with my external HDD, that's currently working, hopefully it won't fail me.
so any ideas??? I don't want to keep changing cables...

[Q] Kies... arghhhhhhh!!!!

Why is Kies so difficult? why is it so huge?
Downloaded the latest version a few days ago, couldn't for the life of me get it to connect to my phone. Downloaded the latest version today, still can't get it to connect.
Have formatted internal SD, set to KIES mode, started KIES first etc. etc. still just get the "Connecting the device..." on the screen with no sign of it doing anything.
Why is this so difficult?
what is wrong?
it works for me on Win7 x64
also on WinXP SP3 x86
Just can't get it to connect to the phone. Tried various options as per other threads but, as yet, no luck...
reboot the PC
remove all other USB devices
some PC have cheap USB ports, seriously.
just today i was fixing an IBM computer, and none of the back USB ports worked, only the 2 in the front, i was like WTH !!! ???
usually is the opposite, front USB no good, but back USB are good.
I had the same problem with Kies. It seems that if you are using an alternative home screen (ie: Launcher pro) the phone doesn't hit the idle screen and the mtp mode doesn't kick in. Use the stock home screen app and try again. (make sure debug mode is off too)
BTW I did not come up with this!! I found it via google. Credit to whoever came up with it first.
Had same issue.. now it works everytime i want connect..
What i did was just ..in Kies turn off both automatic starts in general settings!!then restart PC to apply it..
Now when i wanna conect my phone to Kies.. ill start Kies 1st and then connect phone.. with kies connection settings on the phone ofc
EDIT: when u connect your phone.. u must see that USB plug logo on your phone.
Thanks for the replies. Nothing wrong with the usb port I'm using, works fine in normal mass storage mode and does kick off the recognition when in kies mode - it just never gets past the connecting please wait etc message.
Will try it a few more times, take the ticks off the settings etc. and may install it on my other machine and give it a try under xp.
Cheers - any way to have a shorter space bar and have some punctuation characters, cursor control in landscape keyboard mode?

best way to get it to connect is to turnoff kies automatic detection and take it off teh system tray. Then connect your phone as usual and wait for windows to detect it as normal. Once this happens then startup kies manually works everytime.

Exactly the same problem. Just had it running for over half an hour and it didn't connect the device to Kies 1.5.1.10074_2. I have successfully installed all the drivers for my phone for 64-bit. There is nothing wrong with any USB ports on my PC. I don't have Kies setup to run automatic detection, or in the system tray. I have also restarted several times. I always start Kies before connecting the phone. I have done nothing to this phone except install a few apps from the market. My phone shows up as GT-I9000M (I have the phone from Bell) under My Computer. It lets me add files to it without problems. But the second I try and get it to run on Kies, no dice. I figured I would join this website because I am new to Android (and programming... lol) and I really want to get into this kind of stuff, but I can't get anywhere if I can't have the fundamentals laid out for me to use.
Another thing to add, if I enable mass storage, the internal and external storage becomes empty when i connect the phone (Insert disk into whatever) when I know they are both mounted and functioning properly...
I will provide more info if needed, but that's all I can think of to say at this time.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone will help.
Just talked to Bell Rep's at two stores, and I asked them about Kies, and they told me that Kies has not been updated to support the gti9000m from Bell as of yet... Don't know if this is true for everyone, but it would certainly explain why I can't connect to Kies...
Well, I've tried every step to try and get Kies to see the phone but it just doesn't want to work...

Got kies to work first time I tried it. That was a few weeks ago, havent got it working since.

Finally, success!
Decided to try again on my other machine (XP). Unmounted internal/external sd, remounted internal, unmounted external.
Connected kies mode before starting KIES, waited for device discovery, started KIES, voila!
Had done the same numerous times on the other machine (Vista) but with no luck...
Anyway, backup up my contact and tried the upgrade firmware but it says this device's version cannot be updated JF4/JF3.
I'm on a TMobile (UK) supplied device, unrooted, as supplied. Could I use the key combo to override and upgrade? Any potential issues if I did?
Thanks...

My GT-I9000M Won't Install on my Computer

When I plug my SGS Vibrant (I9000M) into my computer running Win7 Pro 64-bit the icon for drivers being installed pops up in the tray. However, all drivers for the phone fail to be installed. I have installed Kies, but it does not connect the phone, it does continuously try connecting to it though. I also notice the screen of the SGS is flashing. You can breifly see the USB sign on it, but then it just continuously alternates between that and the idle screen in rapid succession. On the idle screen I noticed the top had a bar mentioning mtp application. Any advice in solving this issue would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
you need try on a winXP computer
many people have reported problem on Vista / 7
you can try to do it again by "Run AS" administrator
I have the same effing problem man. Happened just now and was trying to find a solutions on the forums and your topic just popped up.
The very funny thing is that I am currently trying to connect the phone to my laptop ( WIN7 x64) and it doesn't work while at my office computer running also WIN7 X64 it works flawlessly.
Maybe somebody has an idea about this.
May I mention that I cannot see the phone in My computer and Kies just hangs at the loading forever
I also have the Connect/Homescreen screens dancing and changing back and forth in a rapid succession.
I've had some minor success. I've gotten 2/3 of the drivers installed, but the MTP usb device won't install. I've tried a couple of the ideas floating around when I googled the issue, but still no success with it.
More info in the issue in the FAQ
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
Hint: Search in page for "Wuala"
I'm downloading those drivers to try now. I'll get back with results if any.
I've gotten my computer to recognize the phone finally and the MTP USB device driver seems to be installed yet Kies still won't connect to the phone.
The steps I followed were:
1. Unmount Internal SD Card
2. Format Internal SD Card
3. Connect to computer
After those steps it connected fine except for Kies still messing around. The phone no longer does the connect/home dance, instead Kies is in a continuous loop of trying to connect while the phone says it is connected.
I'm thinking of trying the Windows XP Virtual Machine next.
I've tried for hours now with little success for my computer recognizing it, but the little success I had achieved with my previous post undid itself and now that fix no longer works. I've tried older versions of Kies, but the older versions of Kies don't support the SGS and the newer versions don't even recognize the phone. I've done almost everything I can possibly think of and find on google in getting my phone recognized by my comp. I'm so close to returning this phone to go back to my blackberry. If anyone can think of anything that may help, please advise. Thanks again.
Well, the problem has finally been solved. I had to completely reinstall windows to fix it. Hopefully this phone is wort the mad amounts of stress it has caused me so far.
wow, that was pretty insane, have to reinstall entire OS just to get KIES to work?

[Q] Update error 801812C

Hi
My beloved HTC HD7 on O2 (Unlocked now) advises me that their is an update.
I imagine this is the pre-update to the No-Do update
However everytime i try to install i get to stage 6 and then the error 801812C is reported.
I have searched this and found the same answer in every article regarding-
"During Step 6 (Rebooting your phone), your Windows OS detects your phone as a new device and starts searching for driver updates online. This can be seen when you click on the little indicator with a spinning green circle in the bottom-right corner of your desktop called the notification area (you might need to click on Show Hidden Icons if it's hidden)."
"You have to *immediately* click on "Skip Obtaining Device Software Online" or Zune will time-out and show error 801812C1"
However i see no option come up on XP to allow me to stop such device updates. And i definatly have no hidden icons!
Someone please help with a better solution...
Jayne (Yes i am a girl so be nice, so sartactic answers please, I am Tech savvy but this one eludes me)
From what you post, it sounds as if maybe you have to right-click the notification icon in the system tray for that option.
From what i understand from the OP's first post, she doesn't have the icon so can't right-click it.
I know it's not really a solution, but have you tried updating on a Windows 7 machine? I've always thought that windows 7 is more compatible with WP7. I know this isn't excplicitly mentioned anywhere, but why else would the Dev Tools only be available in Win7? strange....
Windows 7
Many thanks
Yes indeed no notification is showing and I have set the taskbar not to hide inactive icons so nothing can be lurking!
I will see if i can find someone with Windows 7 as i'm a XP user through and through lol
Many thanks for the ideas so far but if anyone has another brain wave please contribute, I don't want to miss out on the proper upgrade when it arrives..this week fingers crossed eh!
same error here
Hi Jayneh,
I too have an HD7 on o2 (Sim unlocked, but stock otherwise).
I am also an XP sp3 user, and I'm getting the same error as you, 801812c1.
The update fails at step six. The phone will reboot and then show a picture on the screen suggesting I connect my phone to the pc, despite the fact it is connected already. I've tried three times with no joy so far.
I've done some searching and as you say, the current theory is that after rebooting the phone, the pc doesn't recognise it as WP7, but Wm, and proceeds to hunt for the right drivers. This will of course fail, and the update times out.
Several users on different model of phone have reported the error and Microsoft are advising you hold off updating until the issue is investigated.
A number of users are saying they are using Windows 7, so it can't be an Xp specific problem.
Several fixes have been reported by some users which include unplugging and re connecting the phone quickly, or stopping the pc hunting for non existing drivers by clicking the update icon in the notification area. This does not seem to work for everyone.
I have tried unplugging which didn't work for me. I looked for the update icon but can't see one, but in anycase, my machine runs incredibly slowly during the whole process so doing anything at all is frustrating.
One thing I haven't seen anyone reporting is whether they use the same machine to sync a WM6.1/6.5 device or not. I do, but I'm just grasping at straws here.
I'm also slightly worried as I only have a little over 10GB left on the laptop.
Here's hoping NoDo isn't a NoGo for us.
Garrickus
Many thanks Garrickus, as long as i'm not alone with this and it is being looked at, hopefully if all else fails the fab developers on here will soon have us an update rom we can port straight to our HD7's. Fingers crossed and hope the sucking up to the developers speeds this along
One solution to the 801812C1 error code
jayneh & Garrickus,
Do you have windows automatic updates turned off?
I had automatic updates turned off (XP Home 2002) and I had the same problem when I first tried updating.
After reading something elsewhere, I turned automatic updates back on and tried updating again 24 hours later. It worked, with the update running smoothly through all 9 steps without a hitch.
I don't know if you have to wait after turning automatic updates on, I just thought it would be prudent.
I'm also using an HTC HD7 on the o2 network. I hope this information helps you like it helped me.
Ian.
Automatic updates
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your feedback regarding automatic updates.
Unfortunately, I have automatic updates turned on, and PC and Zune are fully up to date, so that's not an option for me.
Interestingly, Zune had a minor update after a couple of failed phone updates and now when the little bubble pops up it describes my device as 'Zune' not 'Windows Mobile', but still getting same error code and updates fails exactly the same.
I see their is no specific response to this error code from Microsoft as yet
Are you still experiencing problems Jayneh ?
Garrickus.
Update
I was still having problems and my PC was/is up to date and automatic updates is on.
I say was because i now have the NoDo update having followed the brilliant update method by Petbede for updating without a gold card.
It went smoothly and here i am with a speedy phone and cut and paste. My god bejewelled loads so much quicker
frustration
Im using Vista, have the same problem as Garrickus. HD7 on Vodafone network. After reboot the device pops up as Zune device and computer tries to look for Zune drivers, after some time it gives up. I have tried all ways of updating drivers, nothin works.
Hi everyone,
I experienced that problem today downgrading my HD7 with Zune installed on XP SP3, three times it didn't work...then i closed all running app like firefox & other utilities...and the downgrade process worked at least...
My advice : just be patient!
Update WP7 driver on PC before running the WP7 upgrade
The error '801812C1' appears when the phone is wrongly identified as a 'Zune' device (MS MP3 reader !) after the phone restarts at step 6 of the WP7 March 2011 upgrade.
In order to set the correct WP7 device on the PC:
1. Shut down the phone (press & hold the power button)
2. Restart the phone and press & hold the camera button
3. A black screen appears on the phone showing a device connected to a PC
4. Connect the phone to PC on USB port
5. Open Device Manager on PC and check the entry for Portable Device: 'Schubert' (= HD7) or other name (depends on your phone).
6. Shut down the phone (press & hold the power button) and restart it.
7. Connect the phone to PC and run the WP7 upgrade from Zune.
The error '801812C' no longer occurs at step 6.
