Ok figured out how to root and unroot the droid 4, I have been doing a lot of ready and people waiting on programs, I hear in some threads to yes download the safetrap and some who say wait... Ok so I figure no harm in installing the root, so here is my question
after downloading root what is the next most important things to install after I root? is there a thread on step my step on this?
I know I need ROM but I am confused about the whole backup thing and safe mode thing, is there a how to for noobs aka root dummies?
I am sure as time goes and lots of reading I will figure out all the perks to rooting.
Thanks
Rooting and installing safestrap are different. Root allows you administrative access, while safestrap allows you to install different ROMs.
You need root for things like Wifi tether and Titanium Backup.
erm, silly question, what's the SAFEST way to root right now for Droid 4? I can't figure out which of the pages on Droid 4 Development forum is worth following. I miss one-click-root ... I don't see that here.
Can you link me to the best thread for following this subject? I really want to get Titanium running again on my new device.

Rooting the D4 is super easy using the Droid 4 Utility found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522911

So I have been lurking for a few weeks and I have a HTC Hero that I want to root. But my question is what is the difference between rooting with UnrEVOked and rooting the way that this thread says forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
IS the difference just the difficult of the root?
And is unrevoked really just one click I haven't found much good info about it.
Thank you so much!
The thread you posted uses the unrevoked method. essentially read a little and what ever you feel is the easiest to understand then do that one.
oh ok. It didnt seem like the thread was the unrevoked method becasue theres are so many steps and unrevoked says its one click. Thats why i was confused.

Thank you. I rooted the xda way with command prompt and all is wonderfull. Thank you for your clarification and help
I've fully rooted my own HTC evo and now I'm looking to root my mom's hero. My question though, is there any downside or limitations to rooting with these methods? Mainly, is this a full root or will that require additional steps?

No limitations, its more steps than the one click method but if you follow the directions it never fails, you run no risk of messing your phone up ( atleast I can't see how) ... any ways the unrevoked method has all the steps to get you rooted and will also help your understand the process and what root actually is.
But root is root doesn't matter how you do it they all lead to the same thing ... full control over your phone.
Ok, so with just one if those two methods the phone will be fully rooted to flash roms, kernels, custom recoveries, radios, and make nand backups? Can you remount and write to /system from within android? I fully understand rooting, just wasn't sure if any further steps were needed on the Hero. With the Evo it was a little more work to obtain full root.

Let me say I had an EVO and used Unrevoked to root it and all I did was use that for wifi.
So now I have an unrooted Nexus. I am in a position that I want some of the custom things but have not rooted and a lot of this technical stuff floors me at this point and I do not want to brick my phone.
Can anyone tell me what it means to install via recovery, how to do a backup and what deoxxed (I know it is spelled wrong) is?
I want to put a custom home screen, I like the blue market I see and I like the clear MMS that is posted, but the install instructions just confuses me.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I really am wanting to customize my Nexus 4G.

Check out the One Click Root thread in the Nexus S 4G Development section. See if that helps a little more. Your probably going to get flamed for posting this in this section, but oh well. Read that and try to get rooted first. Then if you need more help after that feel free to shoot me a PM and ill try to help you more. Read different threads as well, just search XDA for root NS4G. Hit me up if you need some help with anything.

I went through the exact same thing. If you start reading more threads it will start coming to you. When you root, you need the drivers (adb and fastboot) installed on your computer, they come with either pdanet or sdk which you can find the download links to with a quick search of the forums. Find the stickied section of NS4G dev section and those should have all the files you need. Cwm is Clockwork Mod Recovery. It is flashed after unlocking the bootloader using a command prompt. After rooting and flashing cwm, you boot into recovery(cwm) and follow the instructions from a root guide to flash your new rom. I think BuglessPete has a great tutorial on root and flashing a rom. Find that and you're good to go. Don't get discouraged. It is NOT as hard or complicated as it seems. You will be surprised at how simple these guys have made it for us newcomers. Make sure you give them a thanks.

So it was a day from you know what. I got rooted first this morning, I did the first update that I wanted which was the blue market, epic fail. I spent the whole day trying to get my market to work again, no go. I had not backed up (stupid me) and when put that new market in it was a FC galore. I tried downloading other market apk's including the market that is due to be released and none would install. I ended up flashing the phone with Oxygen ROM. Now I have to get the phone back to the way I like it, lots of apps to download (not sure why they did not restore since I am set to back up/restore from google servers) and go from there.
I will be doing more I am sure, lots of reading to do. Thanks to the two of you.

I had to unroot and restore system apps. I used psouza's tools, very easy...

I used psouza's tool but when I click unroot it says it cant recognize my droid 3, which is weird because if i use the psouza tool to root it, it roots it perfectly.
the errors it gives me are:
ERROR: couldn't identify this model of phone as a Verizon DROID 3!
ERROR: you can't restore /system/app on this phone using this tool
search search search....download this and when you open it it will have a unroot option takes about 10min after you download it and works like a champ used it about 3 times already

HI hows do I haz unboot my Droyd?
Seriously, folks, if you do not understand what is needed to "unroot" your phone, then you probably shouldn't be rooting it in the first place. You are offering someone a perfect way to hiijack your device when you use an unroot/root script (NOT implying our guys aren't stand-up dudes, just saying). One of the reasons phones don't come with root access is that allowing root access to your phone essentially opens it up to hiijacking, exploits, and general complete un-privacy. You should at least be able to track and locate the files that are added and modified by rooting. Otherwise, it's like leaving the front door of your house wide open, your wallet on a busy sidewalk, and the keys in your car's ignition at the mall.
Users should know the risks of ignorance!

well said sir if 99.9% of people would read and understand root b4 they jumped into it there would probably be about 99.9% less threads on people jacking there phone up....im not saying nothing can go wrong iv had to ask a few questions myself but they were things that happened while helping dev. with roms on my D2 so PLEASE read and understand what your getting into b4 jumping into this unless you just got A LOT of money to go bye a new phone and in that case just send me a check and save both of us the trouble
Sorry guys, but there are a majority of users like me that simply root our phones to get rid of bloatware or exploit mobile hotspot, and many of us are learning through trial and error and general experience.
Its called learning. And this is also called a forum, which is specifically designed to be a gathering board of likeminded individuals that help troubleshoot and assist others. Its an awesome theory. In fact there's a great one that's made just for users that root/unroot android devices, its called xda.

OK, I'm confident I can root my bionic, but then what? The reason I want to root it is to have control of what's running. What is the interface like? How easy will it be to do that? Are there any tutorials, videos or links on that kind of thing? Thanks.

first, rooting does nothing to your phone . it just gains you root access to your phone. there is a lot of stuff you can do once you have root. install custom roms, different themes, run scrips , make nandroid backups, lots of diferent tweeks and hacks. i would recomend starting out small and working your way up. there are a few apps you will need from the market as well. bionic bootstap and root exsplorer just to name a few. go to droidmodderx/bionic he has alot of how to videos.
the reason i root is still install custom roms, and access to a lot of applications that you need root access for.
Basically, whenever your phone says NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT....rooting solves that.
I looked around there and there are good videos. But what about tools like 'titanium'? Does anyone have any experience with it? I want to be much more specific that waht I saw there. Thanks.
Wow. This is a pretty hard question to answer. I would say wikipedia and google are you friend. And I mean that in the most friendliest way possible.

Titanium allows you to backup and restore your apps. If you have the paid version you can backup and restore multiple apps at a time. You do have to be rooted to use it.
As far as videos on how to root, I've never needed any. I've just read the directions several times when I first got into rooting until I felt comfortable with the process. I do highly recommend trying a custom rom if you do root. These guys usually do a better job than the manufacturers at putting together the Android operating system. Much faster and more customizations.

If you have to ask "then what?" You should NOT be rooted.
Root access is VERY DANGEROUS for people who don't know what they're doing.
If you really want something done to your phone that requires root access, give your phone to someone who knows what theyre doing, have them do what needs to be done, then have them unroot your phone. (unless something they did requires root access at all times).
You need to look up how rooting works and what it can do to your phone.

Step 1: Backing up QPST
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
Step 2: Rooting
There are many methods like:
1. Using the Toolkit (Since you say you're new.. the easier, but longer route would be download a build from sammobile that is supported in Toolkit, and then just using it.
2, via Odin
3. Chainfire's app: Exynos Fix (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297)
Step 3: Installing CWM Recovery
Might get stuck with it not sticking, so using the toolkit as above is the easiest bet for all things required
Check the Android Development for 9305 Thread, you'll get all the "How-to"s . Good luck ;-D
I think you made a mistake.....
Step1. Use search function
Step2. Search again
Step3. Read
Step4. Read some more
Step5. Root
If you still don't know what you're doing, go back to iPhone.
How to root a device is mentioned in a million different posts!
Rule 1 of XDA : SEARCH BEFORE POSTING!

Welcome to the forum lol
I suggest this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979290
That's what I used to install root and CWM (A recovery which allows you to install roms)
Instructions on the program are fairly clear. Just two notes:
-Don't install kies
-Settings --> Developer Options --> under Debugging, tick USB debugging
Have fun! Once you've started rooting and customizing it via Roms, you'll never go back to the device of the sheep.
Being a long-time iphone and new android user, you probably shouldn't root unless really necessary.
Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should. If you don't have a specific reason to root (other than just for the sake of doing it), don't bother with it.
It won't make your phone better, it will only enable you to do more things with it, things you probably don't even know about (Just guessing here).
I suggest you take your time with the phone and when you feel the urge that you need to modify stuff on your phone that can only be done via root, go for it.
I know many iphone users who are at first overwhelmed by android's possibilities even without any rooting.
