[Q] Uncap 3G Speeds with build.prop modification? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

JamieD81 had a neat little hack for build.prop that he implemented in his Codename Android port that uncapped 3G speeds on the Note, but he never said exactly what it was. I was wondering if anyone knows how to reproduce this? Or is this the same as the "Enable HSDPA + HSUPA" option in AOKP ports?

HTC Kaiser. It is possible to work in HSUPA mode?

Hi All
Ukrainian operator U'tel upgrade his equipment. Now i can and possible to use HSUPA internet.
I know that in the chipset MSM HTC Kaiser's is present a possibility work in HSUPA. But, it is possible to work my HTC KAiser in HSUPA mode (up to 7.2 Mbit sec)?
Maybe need to change some values in the registry, or do something else??

I think tytn ii support this (not really sure), but thinking since it support HSDPA (HSUPA for up, HSDPA for down).
My take on the speed question

An interesting question and the answer, not beyond 3.6 Mbps. From the side of the box, the device specs specifically list:
HSDPA/UMTS: Tri-band 850, 1900, 2100 MHz
HSDPA: Up to 384kbps for upload and 3.6 Mbps for download.
As both HSDPA and HSUPA come in different speeds (even going beyond 7.2 Mbps with the latest and greatest revisions), it looks like 3.6 Mbps is a set limitation of the max upload speed imposed by HTC. Whether that limitation is set in physical hardware eg silicon, or firmware such as ROM or Radio code, I don't know but I suspect (just as with 'analog' modem chips) it's the former (forced obsolecence has got to be a good way of selling more chips down the line afterall ).
The relevant part of the Qualcomm Datasheet for the MSM 7200 chip reads:
Air interfaces supported:
- WCDMA (UMTS) R6
- High-Speed Downlink Packet Access
(HSDPA), up to 7.2 Mbps (Category 8)
- High-Speed Uplink Packet Access
(HSUPA), up to 5.76 Mbps (Category 6)
I'd imagine at least one of HTC or Qualcomm would have capitalised on any future upgradeability of the speed by mentioning it on advertising, spec sheets or packaging but nothing I've found (including in the xda-wiki) mentions anything about it being able to go any faster - just as well for me because my current network provider says their HSDPA network top speed limit is currently 3.6 Mbps.
Maybe someone with a deeper understanding of how these things actually work, can provide a more authoritive answer.

[Q] HSPDA Icon Question

Any one know how the i9000 roms show "H" for HSPDA but the captivate shows "3g"? I looked in the framework-res.apk but the connection images look the same. Will much appreciate an answer.
It is the modem that gives hsupa "H" support, not the ROM. Unless the ROM is packaged with the reoriented kernel and modem for the I9000 it does not support hsupa. Captivate does not support hsupa by default unless you are using a different modem than the stock modem. I could be wrong but after months of mods to my phone and experimenting with different ROM and kernel packages this is my understanding. Also be careful when flashing kernels and be sure to use only those made to use with Captivate or you will have auto rotation and button problems.

what he said ^
H on the I9000 stands for HSUPA... not HSPDA...
EDIT: Also.. this sort of question.. belongs in the general questions forum

Exactly the opposite, in fact. HSUPA is not indicated anywhere in the notification bar GUI.

id10terrordfw is right. For the poster above, I am working on a custom rom and trying to figure out how to display the correct icons. So does it belong to dev section or not?

This is +1. H is just the 3g icon on the i9000. It has nothing to do with HSUPA. Even when HSDPA is enabled, the H is still there on the i9000 roms (try the i9000 rom with a captivate kernel and see what happens).
I like the H better, but I have no clue where to find it. Someone like DG, or someone who's torn the entire rom apart to find stuff, would know where it is.

Oddly enough the connection icons are the same on both roms. It must be controlled by something else that displays those icons.
On the i9000 the H icon only comes up when there is (a lot of?) data being sent otherwise the logo always shows up as 3G

This is not entirely true. HSUPA is 3.5g, 3g is 3g, and my phone switches between 2g, H, and 3g depending on my location and which the tower is supporting. My area supports all three and each shows up in my notification bar depending on which is being used. This is because I am running both an I9000 ROM and kernel with the JPM modem. I have all bandwidths enabled. It shows "H" even when no data is being transmitted.

ok, I'm going to try and clarify this, but the poster directly above me had it mostly right.
The i9000 ROM's are capable of showing G (GPRS), E (EDGE), 3G (3G), H (HSPA)... the reason our device will only show the first three and not H is because AT&T (and most US GSM carriers) have decided to lump 3G and HSPA in the same category. So when 3G is shown, you are likely already connected to an HSPA network, AT&T just considers them "close enough" to not need a different icon. This behavior can be modified, and I think DesignGears said it is a simple boolean fix in one of the XML files to allow both HSPA and 3G to be shown (I have not personally looked into this, but I see no reason why this wouldn't be so).
The European firmwares make the distinction because there are some places that are exclusively 3G and some places that are exclusively HSPA, and they can't be 100% certain where the phones are going to be sold, so they differentiate between the two. It has nothing to do with the fact that the icons are there, those are just pictures (they have no code).
Also, yes, this doesn't belong in development, General would likely be a better place.
When I had the froyo i9000 rom 2.2, Mine switched between H, 3g, and E, There were very noticable differences in speed when I was on H, 3g or E for that matter. when the H was on speed test would go up to 7mb and 3g like 1.7. hsupa and hsdpa is the same thing, u stands for upload and d stands for download. when you are on that and H is displayed u can get up to 7.2 mb at cap speed, but prob more like 3 mb to 6 mb on average. Those that are saying other wise maybe your wireless network hasnt been totally upgraded yet, I dont know but there are differences. The reason stock doesnt get it is because its not rolled out yet. The first thing to get true 3.5g or hsdpa is the air cards for computers, this came directly from a att general manager, then when systems are upgraded enough they will roll out ota's to the phones to beable to jump on 3.5 g U dont have to wait for it though u can do as some have said and use the modem for it.
HSDPA -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
HSUPA -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Uplink_Packet_Access
HSPA (when you have both HSDPA and HSUPA) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Speed_Packet_Access
HSPA+ (like T-Mobile is rolling out) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolved_HSPA
W-CDMA/UMTS (what all of these are a part of) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA_(UMTS)
No need to argue further.
My fault on my first post.
However... if certain I9000 roms choose to display H even when connected to 3G... couldn't we just swap out .png files in framework-res??
Look inside with zip... and pull out the drawables folder. Inside are all the notification bar icons for data. Replace the H files with the files for 3G... and shouldn't that fix it?

no i9000 ROM displays H when connected to 3G. 3G and H are two different things.

VJRaider ROM for HTC Raider/Vivid/Holiday Issue

Hey guys I just got my new Raider LTE from bell yesterday, and decided to flash this rom "VJRaider ROM for HTC Raider/Vivid/Holiday"
I was just wondering if anyone else on the bell or any other network using this rom and the required kernel are having issues with connection speeds? I notice too that it jumps alot between 3g and hspa alot too, most I have gotten is 1.5 mbps on a speedtest.
Tested my Atrix and I got 14 mpbs same area and coverage.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
I guess the first question would be did you flash through fastboot on PC or using a different method?
Which of cache/dalvik/data did you wipe prior to installing the ROM?
Did you make sure the APN info in the Raider is consistent with the Atrix?

The 3G/H flicker thing is a know bug, even stock ROM has it, the difference is that stock ROM only shows 4G icon for every type of network, no matter if you are on a 3G, HSPA, HSPA+ or 4G network, it will always show the 4G icon.
For the speed you can check your APNs, it must be a different one from the one you are using on your Atrix. Try to delete every APN and create new ones based on the Atrix ones.
Awesome thanks guys, I had flashed back to stock to try and fix it, I also changed the apn settings and it seemed to make no difference, Bell uses some hybrid network so that could possibly have had am effect. Flashing back to custom Rom now that I know its a known issue.
Cheers
You could also try changing MTU through ifconfig, but this could cause reliability issues. So far, I've only changed MTU on the 802.11 radio for this phone.

[Q] 2G \ 3G toggle for saving battery

hi guys
lately i noticed a toggle for 2G and DATA on most of android v4 ROMS. wanted to know if the 2G toggle is for enabling Edge speed (and that way saving battery).
BTW
im using Anarkia 0.1.7 ROM. baseband is JVU, kernel is Devil2_0.72

[Q] CM10 (Unofficial) 3g issue

ok im not sure if i am the only one with this issue but i have installed the Jelly bean ROM and it is damned nice only major issue i have is i cant get any kind of connection to the HSDPA network (Optus (Virgin) Australia).
I am connecting with UMTS fine but in every other build CM7 CM9 it has auto switched over to HSDPA when im actually using the network ... cm10 it seems doesnt and i cant find any settings to change it as HSDPA is much faster.
Am i doing something wrong or is this a known issue your help will be greatly appreciated
